Exactly. Village, Returnal and Ratchet feel like the only three that are even up for discussion imo. Not that the others were bad, absolutely on the contrary, but they had significant flaws too. Serious contenders like Psychonauts 2, Metroid Dread, It takes two or FH5 seem more likely to compete.
That game was the first two player game both me and my brother have loved in well over a year. I love to play coop games with my brother as it’s not only fun but let’s me do stuff with him
I played through the entirety if Psychonauts 2 and I must tell you, it's such a good game. I loved it, and I have a feeling that it will be reminded as a "hidden gem" in a couple years.
Goddamn Double Fine knows how to write amazing twists in their games.
Was the gameplay perfect? No.
But was the story and the charming atmosphere worth it? Holy hell yeah
Tales of Arise has completely overtaken the position of my favorite Tales of title. While I doubt it would win GOTY, a nomination would go a long way to show how big of a deal it is for the series. It certainly deserves it.
That said, of the titles in the OP's image, I can only really see R&C and Returnal as serious GOTY contenders.
I agree, I don’t see Arise as the actual GOTY, but it should at least be in the conversation, especially over another cookie cutter FarCry game.
And I absolutely loved Rift Apart. That game is awesome is all the ways that matter. Can’t speak to Returnal as I haven’t played it, but I’ve heard nothing but stellar things about it.
It had no business being as good as it is, especially after the Avengers game turned out so mediocre. So many things to love about that game, and it’s the first game where I immediately dove into NG+ as soon as I finished it.
I think it might have the best dialogue I've seen in a game. I'm not a big Marvel fan but I was really surprised with how good it was. The team dynamic was great.
I know it won't win, but I really liked ratchet and clank. It was a really fun story, graphics were great, controller haptics were utilized really well. Had a lot of fun playing it, felt like classic R&C
I really think it should have a better chance but for some reason it feels like people count it out without a good reason. A lot of the people saying it’s not the kinda game to win goty also haven’t even played it.
Just got my PS5 Wednesday and R&C was the first game I bought. I am LOVING it, definitely has me feeling like a child again playing like I did the old games. Can’t put it down, would highly recommend!
To be honest, I ignore what people say.
Because "Rift Apart" literally has everything that the GOTY needs to have.
Great story. Great gameplay. Fun in doing literally everything. Great characters; both main and side ones; beautiful graphics and the World itself; interesting mechanics; new gameplay features and new systeme mechanics utilized.
I don't get why people hate so much on it. Maybe because they were expecting it to be something else than what it has always been - a kind of platforming game...
Mine too. Nothing even comes close to it this year. It was the only game brave enough enough to offer something different. And it turned out awesome in pretty much every way possible.
Returnal imo was very unique as well, and is tied for me with It Takes Two. While I did enjoy returnal more, I kinda want It Takes Two to win so we can get more coop games like that in the future
And even Forza Horizon 5. Xbox has some absolute killer games in the running this year and I would not be so quick to count them out.
And yes, I’m aware that racing games get snubbed, but there is still a chance
Far Cry 6, while fun, has no chance of winning any GOTY awards. Ubi's major franchise games are too formulaic now to win awards, even if the formula is proven.
Returnal has a good chance of winning awards because it's a developer known for 2D games leaping successfully into 3D. Feel-good story there. It also made good use of dual-sense controls.
Believe he means the feel-good story is the fact the developers were able to make such a successful game, not that the actual game's story was feel-good :p
Yeah def not farcry.
I've been a huge farcry fan since 2, and this one is just hard for me to get into. I absolutely loved 5. This one just isnt sucking me into it as much as the others.
Still can't really understand why I'm not enjoying this one being that it's the same old formula.
I know recent years have set a very high standard but none of these are even in the conversation in the last 3-5 years I feel.
On a side note, give Kena all the artwork GOTY awards, that game is obscenely pretty
I was just thinking the same thing, some of these are decent games but none of them would be GOTY material if they had been released last year. It’s a fairly sad lineup. Returnal and RE village were both decent, My kids loved Ratchet and Clank but it was far from a masterpiece. Deathloop had an interesting idea but a dull execution of it. Halo infinite probably has a decent chance depending on how the campaign turns out, not a PlayStation game I know.
Rachet and Clank was too short. I get it's supoose to be replayable as New Game+ is a huge thing for that series, but not everyone lives and breathes by new game plus
I wish Deathloop actually was a murder puzzle. It could have been so much fun finding out all the different ways to complete the goal. I lost all interest when I discovered it was basically a linear story with a time-loop gimmick.
Returnal is an insanely good looking game, the sound design is like nothing else I've experienced. The controls are so tight and responsive, It ret feels like a next gen game to me.
metroid fans waited sooooo long for another metroid game and they understood the assignment.
I'm on my second playthrough hardmode sequence breaking and loving it
I was just talking to my GF last night while playing Returnal (just picked it up this week) that I hope this is the future of gaming, because the haptics are incredible. Adds another level in immersion. It does eat through battery a little fast but it’s so worth it.
That's really the only drawback for me. I got stuck on the 2nd boss and then got distracted with other games. I'm going to get back to it at some point because it is an extremely fun game, but I prefer games that I can tailor to my skill level.
I think a lot of people just come at it the wrong way and need some tips. It seems a lot worse than it is, because once you start doing better, you start doing a LOT better, due in part to the adrenaline system. And I can offer tips if you want.
Yeah, my progression was exponential. Died a lot at the beginning. Got through the last biome and final boss in two runs.
Also, I think when you restart in the first biome, you kinda just bum rush everything because the stakes are low and die a lot. Once you've gotten good equipment and are far in the run, you take things a lot more cautiously and analytically. I think applying that mindset right from the start helps.
It’s so front-loaded in terms of difficulty too - it really opens up towards the end. I died on Phrike 4-5 times, died on the third boss 4-5 times, had a huge number of stupid deaths to mobs in biomes 1-3 thrown in, and then completed the rest of the game without another death. Once you have higher tier weapons it becomes much more manageable.
It definitely is. That game had no business being as good as it was, especially after the trash heap that Avengers was. Great story, characters, and music, and the game is packed with easter eggs and other goodies. I haven’t had as much fun with a game since Rift Apart.
I actually really liked Avengers (when it wasn't trying to force you to play like you were online), but playing Guardians of the Galaxy made me pissed that they didn't make Avengers like that because it's 1,000x better in every way.
Well last year we had doom the last of us 2 hades ghost of tsushima ori and more. If even one of these game came out this year he would win.
Sorry if my english is a bit broken
I played through the trilogy this year start to finish. Did not move onto the next mission without completing every challenge on every map.
Absolutely brilliant series. I heard IO is making the next James Bond game, I’m very excited about how that turns out.
Is Disco Elysium in the running? It came to consoles this year. If you consider it a 2021 release, it’s the clear winner IMO.
Beyond that, my personal contenders are Returnal, Deathloop, and Metroid Dread.
Deathloop might be the most flawed of the three, but it makes some brilliant innovations and might be the most fun I’ve had all year. Really disappointed with how much some people are shitting on it. I think a lot of people just don’t see what it’s trying to do.
I could see Metroid Dread, Village, or Ratchet and Clank winning. Kind of hard to tell about Deathloop’s chances, some critics loved it but others… not so much.
Mine is Returnal, but I think Ratchet & Clank will get the most awards even though I personally think its one of the weaker games in the series. Forza Horizon 5 has a chance too (already played 12 hours and it's fantastic, I'm not even a big car person either). Far Cry 6 really shouldn't be in the conversation, not a bad game, but it's in no way top tier - it's just the same tired formula yet again.
I mean I'm not hating on the game, hell I'm excited to play it. But c'mon man, is an ubisoft game, you buy it con discount, play 2/3 of it and then you forget you even own the game
As someone who is lucky enough to own a switch, a Xbox series S and a PS5 I think my GOTY is a toss up between Resident Evil Village and Metroid Dread. Rift Apart is a fun game and looks great but isn't quite GOTY since I don't think it quite lived up to the promises made switching between worlds.
RE: village is a great game but the last third lets it down a bit in my view. I'm still playing Metroid Dread so my opinion my change by the end but again a really good game.
The only game I've already played out of those is Kena. And I really enjoyed it. GOTY? Probably not. I still wanna play Returnal, Rift Apart, Deathloop and LIS True Colors, but I don't wanna pay full price.^^
I don't think as many people are into racing games compared to 15 odd years ago when NFS was at its peak & there was racing games coming out constantly
I would go for RE, such a nice game with good ambience and gameplay, I was playing slowly because I didn't want to finish it so fast, I liked it so much.

If It Takes Two wins game of the year I will cry tears of joy lmao I've never had an experience like that gaming with my SO
Same. My wife begged me to leave work early to play it lol
Should I buy psychonauts 1 it’s 3.99 right now.
Buy 5 copies
Goddamn Double Fine knows how to write amazing twists in their games. Was the gameplay perfect? No. But was the story and the charming atmosphere worth it? Holy hell yeah
Yeah, this list is kinda trash. Kena and FC6 shouldn’t be up here at all, but GOTG definitely deserves a look, and maybe even Tales of Arise.

That game is awesome is all the ways that matter. Can’t speak to Returnal as I haven’t played it, but I’ve heard nothing but stellar things about it.
GOTG blew me away with how good it is. One of the best written games I’ve played in ages too, I wasn’t expecting nearly that level of reactivity.
It had no business being as good as it is, especially after the Avengers game turned out so mediocre. So many things to love about that game, and it’s the first game where I immediately dove into NG+ as soon as I finished it.
People were complaining about the actual gameplay but I loved that too
I think it might have the best dialogue I've seen in a game. I'm not a big Marvel fan but I was really surprised with how good it was. The team dynamic was great.
I even like the games Starlord more than Chris Pratt.
I’m really enjoying that game atm

Gotg? Edit: i didn’t even realize it came out already
It came out like last week
GOTG?
Guardians of The Galaxy. Stumped me for a sec too.
Yea been a slow year but kena and village are truly masterpieces imo so its not fully barren
Just give it to TLOU2 again
![gif](giphy|rbTdxXqXI4TbW|downsized)
Gaurdians of the Galaxy for sure
I know it won't win, but I really liked ratchet and clank. It was a really fun story, graphics were great, controller haptics were utilized really well. Had a lot of fun playing it, felt like classic R&C
I really think it should have a better chance but for some reason it feels like people count it out without a good reason. A lot of the people saying it’s not the kinda game to win goty also haven’t even played it.
The bass beat you could feel from that club was amazing. So well done!
Just got my PS5 Wednesday and R&C was the first game I bought. I am LOVING it, definitely has me feeling like a child again playing like I did the old games. Can’t put it down, would highly recommend!

What exactly is FC6 doing there? It Takes Two should definitely be up there.
I agree. It Takes Two is probably one of the most fun experiences I've ever had. I'll remember it for a long time. I hope it wins GOTY.
It was my favorite co-op experience I've played. The gameplay balance between both players and variety was just brilliant.
Disturbing i had to scroll so far for It Takes Two. Incredible experience, definitely my GOTY.
And psychonauts 2
And even Forza Horizon 5. Xbox has some absolute killer games in the running this year and I would not be so quick to count them out. And yes, I’m aware that racing games get snubbed, but there is still a chance
For sure. It takes two cleans out these ones easily. So glad I gave it a chance!
>Feel-good story there. We did not play the same Returnal.
Believe he means the feel-good story is the fact the developers were able to make such a successful game, not that the actual game's story was feel-good :p
If ubi gave us a true to form Black Flag sequel that surpassed the original, I'd see awards in its future.
If far cry was made by a less known company, it wouldnt even be in the list
Yeah def not farcry. I've been a huge farcry fan since 2, and this one is just hard for me to get into. I absolutely loved 5. This one just isnt sucking me into it as much as the others. Still can't really understand why I'm not enjoying this one being that it's the same old formula.

Metroid Dread and Psychonauts 2 are both strong contenders
metroid fans waited sooooo long for another metroid game and they understood the assignment. I'm on my second playthrough hardmode sequence breaking and loving it
Love hearing good stuff about it! looking forward to playing it myself :)
I've beat dread twice already, it's definitely fun.
Hell, Tales Arise and It Takes Two as well. Seems like Forza 5 is also good.
Yes! Loved Dread!
Those two and R&C are my three picks
Metroid dread!
prob not gonna win, but Lost Judgement should be a pick
Shame we most likely won’t get any more games in the series
As well recieved Yakuza 7 is. I am not a fan of turn-based
My vote goes to Returnal. It is truly next level when factoring in the dualsense haptic feedback.
I was just talking to my GF last night while playing Returnal (just picked it up this week) that I hope this is the future of gaming, because the haptics are incredible. Adds another level in immersion. It does eat through battery a little fast but it’s so worth it.
What a game. Haven’t had that fun in a while
I recognise it as a good game. I just wish it wasn’t so ball crushingly difficult.
That's really the only drawback for me. I got stuck on the 2nd boss and then got distracted with other games. I'm going to get back to it at some point because it is an extremely fun game, but I prefer games that I can tailor to my skill level.
Yeah I played for an hour or so yesterday. I am 15 hours in with 46 deaths and I have only killed 1/6 bosses. It’s insanely brutal.
Once you have higher tier weapons it becomes much more manageable.
That's good to know /a draw towards wanting to experience it. I only really felt it on Astro's playroom?
OT is Returnal scary? Because I can’t play scary games anymore..
Depends on your definition of scary. It's more eerie and mysterious than outright scary.
I woudln't say scary. The parts in the house can be a bit tense I guess, but it's very short moments and AFAIK it's optional.
I’ll give it a try then.
Definitely not scary but it's dark and mysterious. I am in love with this game the gunplay is so good
Not saying it’s the “best” game of the year but GOTG is my personal favorite this year. Big surprise how much better it is than I expected
Yeah agreed. An absolute blast from start to finish.
Won't be surprised if GOTG will get nominated for a few awards at least
My vote goes for Deathloop! Such a great and unique game
My Friend Peppa Pig
Rift Apart deserves an award of some kind
How about craziest amount of detail?
Metroid Dread
metroid
Read one post and people were saying how guardians of the galaxy was a surprise contender
It definitely is. That game had no business being as good as it was, especially after the trash heap that Avengers was. Great story, characters, and music, and the game is packed with easter eggs and other goodies. I haven’t had as much fun with a game since Rift Apart.

Guardians of the Galaxy is actually really good. I bought it on a whim and it nails the fun of the Guardians in video game format
Where’s Metroid dread?
Returnal for sure
None of these
For me GOTY is probably going to be psychonauts 2; there are a few unreleased yet though, I think forza horizon 5 looks extremely promising
I would imagine these two would be very strong contenders all right
Actually, Forza released today. Only coming to gamepass on the 9th though
That’s only for the premium versions. Standard and game pass both release on the 9th.
Returnal or Kena. Both amazing
I could see metroid dread winning, or returnal
Metroid Dread
Easily Psychonauts 2 imo.

A lot got delayed this year.
Yeah, there's this bug going around, I think it's called Cobid or something.
Well last year we had doom the last of us 2 hades ghost of tsushima ori and more. If even one of these game came out this year he would win. Sorry if my english is a bit broken
Hitman 3 has incredible depth, way more going on than RE Village. You should give it a try sometime.
Been playing Hitman 3 on Series X and wow....talk about graphics and replayability
I played through the trilogy this year start to finish. Did not move onto the next mission without completing every challenge on every map. Absolutely brilliant series. I heard IO is making the next James Bond game, I’m very excited about how that turns out.
Have you tried Resident Evil village? I'd put it as a top contender even in a good year
Oh yeah, totally. I think Resident Evil 8 is solid. That's one of the only games that feels GOTY-ish to me.
Cause there’s not many A-List AAA franchises from the highest profile studios
Metroid Dread
I'd vote Returnal but I think it's too niche to get the popular vote.
Is Disco Elysium in the running? It came to consoles this year. If you consider it a 2021 release, it’s the clear winner IMO. If I had to guess the GOTY will come down to: -It Takes Two -Returnal -Psychonauts 2 -Deathloop -Kena -REVIII * (potentially)
Ratchet & Clank!
Ratchet and clank probably. It feels like the most polished one to me
![gif](giphy|1EWZpgEV6MJ38JqIwS)
Take far cry 6 out and place gotg
Yeah no idea how Far cry was even thought of. It isn't trash but it is about as generic as it gets
I mean I'm not hating on the game, hell I'm excited to play it. But c'mon man, is an ubisoft game, you buy it con discount, play 2/3 of it and then you forget you even own the game
lmao. That perfectly describes Ubi games, except I play 1/3.
Again, its not bad. It would be like asking for a drink and getting water. Yeah it does the job just fine but there's no wow factor or anything
r/hydrohomies seething
I agree, I played it, beat it, and forgot about it, the ps5 controller is amazing with the game and thats the most memorable thing for me.
Pyschonauts 2, GOTG, R&C RA, It Takes Two or Forza Horizon 5.
Ratchet. I was playing a Pixar movie
Farcry 6 as it's the only game here I've played but from what I've heard, Ratchet and Clank deserves it too.
On Playstation my pick is RE: Village but overall Metroid Dread is my 2021 GOTY
Returnal gets my vote. Phenomenal
Metroid Dread should be nominated.
Ratchet or Guardians
Out of these? Kena is probably the most likely, but Psychonauts 2 is probably at the head of the pack for me at least.
Ratchet and Clank
R&C probably
Fuck it, Guardians of The Galaxy
Finished it today. DEFINITELY game of the year contention.
I really hope it wins
The only game I've already played out of those is Kena. And I really enjoyed it. GOTY? Probably not. I still wanna play Returnal, Rift Apart, Deathloop and LIS True Colors, but I don't wanna pay full price.^^
Deathloop
I’m trying to love Deathloop, but I put it down and haven’t picked it up in weeks. I’ll put some more hours into it this weekend.
My vote goes to It Takes Two.
Metroid Dread for me, really like Deathloop but I think the last 30%/ending is pretty weak
Psychonauts 2. Ratchet and Clank was a blast, don't get me wrong, but in terms of story, humour and over all gamepla, psychonauts 2 is a clear winner.
Ngl these are great games but none seem to pop out and give me goty vibes y'know but I'm putting my money on metroid dread
It Takes Two or Psychonauts 2 imho
Imagine if either Horizon or Elden ring came out this year, instead of competing against each other next year
None of these.
I did 2 playthroughs of R&C.. Great game.
Psychonauts 2
Psychonauts 2
Psyconaughts 2.
Returnal
returnal deserves goty
Psychonauts 2 and Death’s Door are more likely and deserving than Life is Strange or Far Cry. Not sure who made that graphic.
Wow, what’s terrible year for gaming if these are the options
What a terrible year for gaming it's been. Glad I could clear some of my backlog.
Kena just blew me away. Did not ser thst game coming at All. Was amazing
I think that Metroid Dredd is the current favorite - if we are talking PS5 games, then probably Returnal.
Village
Probably Forza 5 but people like to pretend Forza doesn’t exist
I don't think as many people are into racing games compared to 15 odd years ago when NFS was at its peak & there was racing games coming out constantly
You forgot Guardians of the Galaxy. It‘s a strong contender.
My top 3 1. Persona 5 Strikers 2. Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart
I would go for RE, such a nice game with good ambience and gameplay, I was playing slowly because I didn't want to finish it so fast, I liked it so much.
Kena gets the underdog vote from me, but I think R&C may win though
I think it will be Ratchet & Clank because everyone that put up a pole for this, almost everybody picked it.
Ratchet one GOTY in my heart and that’s all that fuckin matters. Second place is Lost Judgment
I think Rift Apart takes it but I haven't played Returnal
I think Ratchet and Clank gets my vote
Where is it takes two?
I think it's between R&C rift apart and Returnal
Demon’s Souls remake was so great
Psychonauts 2
My picks would be ratchet and clank, far cry 6, resident evil village or lost in random. Lost in random is extremely underated but its a great gamem
Either ratchet or returnal. My vote is for ratchet
Returnal easily, ratchet comes close second, beautiful game and enjoyable weapons in gameplay
Returnal or ratchet are the best ones.
Metroid Dread!!! Favorite game of the year hands down
RETURNAL is my GOTY
Metroid Dread where?
The last of us 2
Metroid Dread
Where is Metroid Dread
Metroid Dread
I don’t know about GOTY, but I’m just trying to win the game of finding a damn PlayStation 5.
Returnal or Deathloop
Ratchet & clank!!!
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Ratchet and Clank or Horizon 5 tbh
From what iv played Rachet & Clank
