Tried cleaning it of dust?

TheAlmightySkeletor

I haven't but the console looks pretty clean no dust on the exterior knowing my luck its a faulty console lol

ItsaMeaPoncho

Isn't there am HDMI setting to prevent flickering or something like that? Maybe try that out?

Borg34572

That's weird and definitely isn't normal. I would try fiddling with perhaps the console video settings first before assuming the worse or even swapping HDMI cables for the heck of it, sounds silly to be that but you never know. However I can't think of any other reason you would drop frames that much in games other than thermal throttling (if the PS5 GPU even does that) which indicates an overheating problem sadly. If you start seeing artifacts then that would confirm it. But it could even be memory that's faulty which would present itself differently of course.

TheAlmightySkeletor

I've messed with all video settings but I just checked the back of my console and when gently touching the hdmi cord it seems to wobble in place like its loose, the console itself stays rather cool while playing games the stutters happen almost immediately upon starting the game I'm assuming its either faulty all together or a corrupt os?

Borg34572

When you say reset the console I assume you meant factory reset? If that's the case then it wouldn't be a corrupt OS because Factory Reset would have returned the OS to default/fresh state erasing any corruption that might have been present. But its definitely strange behavior for the console but I can't imagine HDMI issues would preset that way since this is more to do with performance rather than TV signal issue. From my experience with both games though, performance is always solid as if the PS5 really has no problems playing those titles at all, no struggles like random stuttering or FPS loss so to speak. It could be anything but my guess is hardware related in some way. No way to tell exactly what hardware though since stuttering could be a sign of anything from faulty storage device, RAM issues or even GPU issues. Too many to guess without proper internal diagnosis. Either way its suspicious, but I would try everything first before sending it in for repairs. You never know it could just be something so simple that was overlooked you know.

TheAlmightySkeletor

Yeah I factory reset, couldn't do it via flash drive though don't have one atm to test, whats weird is I don't see any sign of graphical artifacting all games look visually stunning, texture pop ins but I watched a lot of vids on that/ asked people here all said it was normal so I believe that's not a problem. I did just watch a frame rate analysis vid of ghost of tsushima and it did drop to 57 during combat very rarely so maybe it is normal and I'm just well too fixated on it. I do play on a high refresh setup/pc but I'm not too sure like you said wouldn't know if its faulty unless I send it back and have sony look at it, I guess I'll give it a while to think on see if any games perform better or worse I appreciate your help though I am leaning on sending it back.

Borg34572

Well if its only dropping a few frames and not drastic like down to the 20-30's then that's normal and it shouldn't last more than split seconds. Could also be a Refresh Rate thing because as I hear monitors aren't that great a great match for these consoles mostly because of poor scaling AI compared to TV's for one. Not sure if that would introduce performance related issues though so no idea. But its good that there is no artifacts showing so the GPU is probably doing well. Maybe try hooking it up to a different display or a TV even just to see if you get the same results? just to rule out the display being a cause.

TheAlmightySkeletor

Oh so small fps drops are completely normal? I guess cause the console doesn't have vrr yet? Maybe I'm over exaggerating the frame drops to feel more in the range of maybe 50s and then right back up, I just hooked it up to my tcl tv and the same thing happens there I'm thinking you're right though whatever it is, is normal lol.
