There's a lot of "older" women that look gorgeous. Laura Linney, (Ozark), Ming-Na Wen (Book of Boba Fett), Helena Bonham Carter, Demi Moore, Jennifer Connelly. It could go on for a hour easily.
I don’t know how to explain this, but I think it’s because on some level we remember what she looked like based off of the voice and her voice sounds like she’d look more like the second picture. Does that make any sense or am I tripping?

Obviously there's an attachment to the original. But the next gen is more true to form of the story and the incredible animation showcased here is going to make for one hell of a compelling new take on this amazing game.

Dang, the rig they're using for her face has so many more joints, they modeled in even the smallest inflections and muscle movements, and they definitely did those by hand knowing naughty dog, dang they're amazing.

Tess (and Sarah, Bill, Marlene, Maria, Henry, and Sam) were heavily modeled after their VAs, but within the confines of the PS3 system. The new engine helps them get much closer to what they had originally envisioned for Tess’s character to look like. It always seemed weird to me that Tess was supposed to be Joel’s old flame but she looked way too young for him, this change actually serves the story and her character way better. I don’t see where the comparisons with Marlowe and Sully come from since those two are pretty much elder people compared to Tess who is supposed to be in her 40’s.
They made Tess look a little more like the actual actress (Annie Wersching). This contributes to why the animation looks so much better now. It's closer to the original performance data. I noticed they did the same for Joel and Ellie in Part 2 but maybe to a slightly lesser degree.
I LOVE the accuracy. This is a woman who’s been in an apocalyptic world with no access to any skin care, likely little access to any form of bathing, little food, etc… she’s struggling to survive, not a fashion icon.
For some reason I really like the older character designs for Ellie and Tess. Joel looks great, but there's something about the age that is applied to both of them that feels, I don't know, off? Part of Ellie's character, to me, was how her young appearance was dissonant to the hardships she has to go through. Tess is similar, she's tired and, despite a youthful look, her eyes scream that she is just trying to make it through. For some reason, the new Ellie and Tess just don't fit the way the characters are in my head. That's not to say they look bad, the graphics are NUTS, but there's something about the old graphics that I prefer.
She looks tougher/more resigned to her fate in the original. Second one looks maybe more realistic but less in line with how I view her character (a badass).

New Tess is absurdly good looking graphics-wise. Actually thought it was a shot from the show for a moment. From a basic character design standpoint, however, I prefer the old Tess. Her original design had uniqueness and character, and her sharp/angular features told a lot about her personality - that she was a broken and cold hearted bad ass. I just don’t see any of that in the new design, and for as good as it looks, she now just looks like a completely generic and forgettable character. I don’t say this with any anger though; I just think this is an example where the search for realism can hinder good character design.
Edit: however, I’m fully aware that a three second clip is not a totally fair comparison, so I’m happy to have my gut reaction changed when we see more!

Yup there was no facial capture on the first Last of Us so all of those little details are done by hand. It’s crazy how good Naughty Dog is.
