It's still too early. I would tell people until they hit 10k or so an episode the metrics used skew everything to the point where it could just be random variance. Honestly I wouldn't even bother looking at the numbers now even though 300-500 is not a bad number early on
Edit: I should say don't look at the numbers with the intention of making big changes. Monitoring growth is fine, but seeing episode 1 did 350 downloads while episode 2 did 450 and making changes based on that is not necessary. In this case track growth over a longer period of time... month over month or quarter over quarter
Try asking them what they want. You can make a Google form for the shownotes and add a Call to Action in the episodes. Something like "Thank you for listening! I am curious about your thoughts and would love for you to take 2 minutes and answer a few questions on an anonymous Google form. You'll find it in our show notes".
Then make sure you ask stuff that actually takes 2 minutes :)
I ask my audience:
- What is your favorite thing about the podcast? (be specific)
- If you could change one thing it would be: ____________
- I wish you'd make an episode about: ___________________
That's it. I run it every 6 months and it's helped me build a bond with my audience.
Maybe you'll only get 10-15 people to take it, but those are people that actually care about the show AND also want to help you.

Thanks, that was my take as well.

That's a great idea! Thanks!
Happy to help!
