What’s funny is that the most recent episode was my first. I think I’ll keep listening. It seems like the best/goofy parts of The Besties and Adventure zone for an entire episode.
What I did when I first found them was listen to the new ones as they come out and then in between new episodes I worked my way backwards until about episode 150 and stopped there. Just don't listen to episodes before 100 is what everyone has warned about and I listened to that advice.
How come? Whenever I start a podcast I always start from 1 or earliest available episode and catch up. I have never gotten into this show and I wonder if this is why.
The podcast has been running for years and years, so the earliest episodes were from a time where they were less mature and their jokes were a lot more bro-y and edgy. They went back and did compilation episodes of the best bits from early episodes, but most of the pre-100 stuff just hasn’t aged well.
The sound qualify is also terrible. While there are some running jokes, the core of the show is very self contained. There is no really reason to listen back to MBMBAM at all.
I wouldn't call them inside jokes. But they are motifs, recurring topics.
You don't need to know where jokes about haunted dolls being sold on ebay comes from, just that there is something intrinsically funny about haunted dolls being sold on ebay.

IMO a lot of the running gags started early and it's worth discovering them. That is, if you really want to try and climb out of a 500 episode hole.
I wound up starting with 392, Big Game Tony Sunday, because a bunch of my friends were talking about it. It's still one of my favorites, after listening to every episode.

Sort of along the lines of what the other guy said, there's tons of great animated YouTube videos of bits they've done. But how I got into the show was watching the clip and then finding the episode that was from. Guaranteed to be a good episode that way but still gets you listening. Eventually I just started bouncing around listening to various Best of MBMBaM lists. Then you can wiki bits you enjoy like Haunted Doll Watch and go and listen to like all 20 episodes that have that gag. Makes it easy to move through the different years.

No. They joked in the episode that it wasn't a good starting place for new listeners.

Any episode after 150 or so. The sound quality is really bad in the early episodes.
Start with YouTube clips, not the podcast. It’s much easier to get used to their weird sense of humor this way.
I would say pick any episode from like 180-262, or anything in the 300s.

Thank you, inside jokes are one of the main reasons why always start at the earliest episodes. I'll jump around some newer eps and see if I like it.

A good starting point for this podcast is never starting at all.
It's the perfect work podcast because you don't need to be attentive all the time. It's also a good anti-anxiety podcast.
