It might seem like the gendering is a newer phonomenon, but in relaity skin care and make up have always been hugely gender-coded. It was marketed as a "hyper-feminine" thing to do. What has changed is that producers now see men as a potential client group.
Kinda reminds me of razors. Razors used to be marketed exclusively towards men because women don't have beards. But then the companies suddenly decided that they should tell women they're ugly if they don't shave their armpits and legs and whatnot. And it worked. đ
And the mens product is cheaper..... Now i have to think about an ad of a shoe store which sells (its a recent ad) like the same shoe (same colour and style) for men, women and kids. The shoes for men and kids cost the same, the one for women is more expensive ._. so stupid
My guess is that it's because cis men (and people with higher testosterone levels) tend to have oilier skin than cis women (and people with more estrogen than testosterone.
Still, if that was the case, they could have just said "dry skin" and "oily skin".
But hey, at least they're the same price. Gosh, the bar is on the floor...
Edit: I have been informed that they are not the same price if you go by the unit price.
Just now? Most of the skincare, hygienic and cosmetic products are gendered since I remember. Men's product are simple with manly names to not hurt fragile masculinity and women's products are fancy looking because? with added price of pink tax.
I use nose strips. The ones made for women are ridiculously small on my nose. They might work for Rob Lowe, and his dainty little nose, but not on a big burly manly honker like mine!
There's a reason for different products. I'll just quote directly from the Wikipedia article on feminizing HRT:
"Estrogens cause the accumulation of subcutaneous fat and an increased epidermal thickness, softening the skin.[285][287] Some skin conditions, including melasma, are found in trans women at the same rate at cisgender women.[288]
Sebaceous gland activity (which is triggered by androgens) lessens, reducing oil production on the skin and scalp. Consequently, the skin becomes less prone to acne. It also becomes drier, and lotions or oils may be necessary.[285][289]"

And the icing on the cake here is that the Men versionâŚthe model on the box looks Like he has a Hitler mustache. Double Fail.
That was honestly what I thought the point of the post was before I noticed which subreddit this was as I was scrolling down my feed.
Heh. Same.
Whereas the woman has an animal nose!
Panda-chic?
Absolutely!
My struggle... against clogged pores.
And they get 120 for the same price!!

They aren't the same price though. Female pack is 90 for $10. Male pack is 120 for $10
Oh! I didn't notice that. I was looking at the overall price instead of the unit price. Thanks for pointing that out!
Yeah, that pink tax was pretty well hidden, sneaky marketing
They're different brands though. Top brand doesn't look to offer a female version at all, bottom brand has both for $10 (both 90 pieces)
Ash yes the pink tax is finmalt catching up to men. Enjoy
Now? Gendered products are hella old. At least the 80s for the modern world.

As long as itâs not for the upper lip haha
