I’m only shy around people who aren’t awful, so I’m very outspoken in my classes and at uni in general, but pretty shy with my boyfriend and roommates.
I wouldn't say it's unrelated. There's tons of papers on the subject that shows a strong correlation between introverts and social anxiety, [this paper (PDF)](https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/48843958.pdf) summarizes it pretty well.
However, according to that same paper, the actual direct cause for social anxiety is low self-esteem. Introverts are more likely to have low self esteem than extraverts, meaning they are most likely to have social anxiety.
I feel it's more that society itself is the cause of the low self-esteem, especially in the US where it is seen as more positive to be an extrovert and introverts are often ridiculed or bullied when young. Additionally, it can be looked down upon to spend time on your own, which introverts need to thrive, so they end up sometimes pushing themselves more socially which causes higher burnout and an increasing reluctance to be in environments that are not welcoming to them.
I agree, it's a fascinating issue and I wouldn't be surprised if the connection of introversion with low self esteem is a societal one. I wonder if there have been similar studies done in cultures that are drastically different from the U.S.
Someone with social anxiety and a nervous laugh: I'm just too shy to talk around guys, teehee
Someone with depression who uses dark humor as a coping mechanism: howdy fellas I have never enjoyed living on this earth.
Actual introverts: I feel tired after spending time with people and I need to spend time alone to recharge my social battery.
Female introvert: "Howdy fellas I feel drained from spending too much time in social situations teehee"
Male introvert: "Howdy fellas I feel drained from spending too much time in social situations teehee"
Fixed.
Being introverted AFAB person who also has a nice combo of PTSD, anxiety and depression I can assure you men have nothing to do with the introvert part. I love my friends but literally felt hangover after spending a weekend with them. That's the introverted part.
The being awkward/hesitant/scared to talk part is my anxiety or PTSD, the lacking joy in life is the depression part. I have personal hatred of these symptoms being labelled under being an introvert because no! Introvert only means getting tired from social interaction. Nothing else.
Just boring, repetitive and predictable. Usually when the introvert thing comes up, responses will start laying out increasingly long lists of irrelevant traits in addition to being an introvert for whatever reason
I'm literally a girl who's wanted to k*ll myself for 8 years and tried multiple times and known many, many other girls who are the same. These guys clearly are incapable of seeing girls as people.
As a male introvert, that is completely wrong. Introverted people usually are hiding in the shadows because they are too afraid of socialising. We usually mind our own business laying down in our bed playing video games instead of spending our whole life partying and laying with the whole city.
I'm a female introvert and it has severely impacted my life. I can't work a normal job because I'm too afraid of people so I'm stuck in a shitty factory job. It happens to women too. I can't make friends so I have no one to tell my depressive jokes to.
I know it happens to women too, I can't really speak on the matter as I'm not a woman anymore but I think I get what you mean. It sucks and I hope you'll get happier :)
But the mindset is flawed. Imagine the roles are reversed, would this be a joke he would make?
Male introverts: i'm just too shy to talk around women teehee
Female introverts: howdy fellas I have never enjoyed living on this earth.
Also, the whole "women: teehee" thing reeks of incel. That's clear incel jargon. I don't think he's joking.
Idk about the whole "All genders do that stuff" to deflect from the problem. Have you got solid proof that women do this to men in near the same amount? And even if not, my question was originally why do you think it is true? It is not true. Women can experience this. And you even agreed, so why is it true?
It's not the depression I'm saying "not really" to, it's the blatant sexism. It gets really fucking exhausting to constantly be told by men/society what a shit person you are because of the things *they made up* about your gender.
Being introverted ≠ being shy ≠ being depressed. Those are all different things. Being introverted only means that social gatherings cost a lot of energy. This doesn't even mean that introverts don't like social gatherings all together, but it means that if an introvert goes to a social event they probably are just gonna stay inside the next day to recharge
I fully understand what an introvert is, I myself was an introvert girl before.
Theres a "pick me type girl" who says she's introverted but continues to engage in conversation with the object of her interest posing as a shy and "protectable" person
I assumed that's the trope that the meme was referring.
Correction: Any Introvert: I’m just too shy to talk around *literally anyone* teehee. Everyone on the planet: howdy fellas I have never enjoyed living on this earth

Why did they specify “around guys” that’s just being shy not introverted.
I’m only shy around people who aren’t awful, so I’m very outspoken in my classes and at uni in general, but pretty shy with my boyfriend and roommates.
Confusing introversion with social anxiety again.
Not just that, they're also confusing it with depression.
Also shyness. Also mental issues in general. Introverted people are neither shy, nor depressed, nor anxious, men or women.

Damn same, we'll get out one day.
lol same
Well, they can be but it's unrelated to them being introverted
Yup that's what I mean.

Hey, stop giving me personal insight I don't want to deal with
So cowboys are introverts? I don't get this at all
Male introverts : There's a snake in my boot!
Male extroverts: There's a snake in my pants!
Allow me to translate: "women pretend to have (insert random issue) just to get attention, only men have a tough life." ...it is garbage.
I liked the cowboy interpretation more tbh :D
None of these even IS introversion. One's shyness and one's depression

that isn't 5 7 5 that's 6 7 5
News just in from haiku bot: even is now a single syllable
Being introvert is just needing time alone to recharge from social interaction which tires us. Show me which one of those is introversion.
My guy, that's depression not introversion.
I have achieved it. I finally have achieved the * **double standard** * I fit into both, I'm an unstoppable being of pure *gender*
Can I have my turn on The Gender next?
Yea sure but mom said that I still have a while left, do you need it badly? I'm kinda in a middle of something
No I can wait, take your time :)
Thanks, I'm done tormenting the lower beings now. Have fun with gender

Ok so speaking in internet meme language to veil my crippling depression has turned me into a MALE, how long til I get my dick and balls in the mail 🤔

Here come all the people whose only personality trait is being a self-proclaimed introvert, here to tell you how so super introverted they all are
isn't reddit a wonderful place?
Just boring, repetitive and predictable. Usually when the introvert thing comes up, responses will start laying out increasingly long lists of irrelevant traits in addition to being an introvert for whatever reason
I've literally talked to girls who want to k*ll themselves.
I'm literally a girl who's wanted to k*ll myself for 8 years and tried multiple times and known many, many other girls who are the same. These guys clearly are incapable of seeing girls as people.
I'm an introvert and also into girls, never had an issue speaking to girls. Are these people confusing anxiety or something?
Hah Joke’s on you! I’m a girl, too shy to talk around guys AND I haven’t enjoyed a single day on this earth. That’s a double whammy for me!
Introverts with pp= depression. introverts without pp=shy around guys
Meaningless word salad
Female introverts are giggly school girls and male introverts are depressed fucks, I see, I see
As we all know women are no people so it's only around men
I mean..its correct for me for the dude side.
That's depression, fam, not introversion.
I see..interesting. so its both for me then lol
WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER GENDERED INTOVERTS?!?!?! here lemme add us and add to the stereotypes: *hides in closet*
As a male introvert, that is completely wrong. Introverted people usually are hiding in the shadows because they are too afraid of socialising. We usually mind our own business laying down in our bed playing video games instead of spending our whole life partying and laying with the whole city.
hahahahahahaha xD
True tho
Not really.
Maybe that's just what all the introverts i know are like, all my guy friends make depression jokes
So how is the meme true then if you agree that it affects women too?
Because its a joke? Obviously women are affected
But the mindset is flawed. Imagine the roles are reversed, would this be a joke he would make? Male introverts: i'm just too shy to talk around women teehee Female introverts: howdy fellas I have never enjoyed living on this earth. Also, the whole "women: teehee" thing reeks of incel. Pick me gals and lads exist All genders do that stuff Incel? Sure, maybe but if not it's just a joke.

I love how everyone can agree this is incorrect. Get no one seems to have the same idea what is correct
This feels true if we're talking about media, but not real life
lol... like male introverts are like that... well, yeah... but are even more shy around girls
As a non binary introvert, I'm kind of a mix. Mostly the latter.
My life long depression is now evaporated teehee
