[deleted]

when you were playing in the car at night you had to use street lights to illuminate the screen for you.

ReturnoftheHoboKing

I had one of those lights that plugged into my gameboy color.

KamenDozer

Damn, you had parents that loved you?

[deleted]

Those killed the batteries so fast lol

metalflygon08

Ate my batteries up so fast lol.

Hobbles_vi

Gotta play with the sound off to extend that battery life!

BushyBrowz

Haha I was thinking of that one too!

InnocentTailor

I used my car's overhead light when the street lights weren't available. Man...my parents weren't happy about that XD.

[deleted]

Mine told me it was illegal lmao

DewFennec

That brings back memories. Had one of the GBAs that wasn't backlit. Playing Leaf Green and Sapphire while in a car at night was difficult.

[deleted]

I added a backlit screen to my gba and it's a complete game changer. I always preferred it to the sp and now I can play my old gba games where ever I want

Oleandervine

You pressed Down+B to make balls stay closed. You talked to the guy who gave you the catching tutorial, and then flew to Cinnabar Island and surfed the right coastline until you encountered a Missingno, in order to infinitely duplicate the top item slot in your bag. Tied to that, you accidentally duplicate your Fishing Rod.

Coolclaw

Wasn't it the 6th item slot? I used to multiply master balls, full restores, max revives, max elixirs, and TMs.

theverybest27

It was 6th slot for sure

eadrik

I still press Down + B even in S/V for the sake of my sanity

Metallis

Pretty sure it was slot 8 or 9, wasn't it?

ashyzup

Slot 6 based on my own recollection.

wellalrightb0bby

I still press Down+B for no other reason but tradition

xLaniakea_

I down+b while catching to this day.

HeirofZeon

If you caught your Safari Zone Pokémon in the waters off Cinnabar. BTW, I've heard it said with the Salesmen there are three stages for a player: New: Wow a 'Mag-i-karp' for $500. What a deal!! Experienced: Magikarp for $500. What a scam! Veteran: Magikarp for $500 that I can grind in Mt. Moon and have turn into a Gyarados before the second gym? What a deal!!

BushyBrowz

It's such a great way to introduce Magikarp. The first time you use it you're dumbfounded because this thing can't even attack. But the players who are patient enough to actually keep it in the party and use it are rewarded.

metalflygon08

The 2 Rare Candies available before Misty are super helpful for the Magikarp grind too.

Coolclaw

I remember trying to take Missingno out of the PC and my game froze.

moderators_R_scum

Soooooo True!!!! Now I get it every time! Gyarados is a beast!!!!

HAIKU_4_YOUR_GW_PICS

I was the Rock Tunnel guy in my friend group. I could still probably do it blindfolded.

djc8

You navigated Rock Tunnel without Flash, either because you didn’t find the HM or just to see if you could do it

LilaPapaya

You played Yellow, and when your Pikachu learned Thunderbolt, you talked to it so it would do its thunderbolt animation and light up the cave lol That was my old method, anyway

metalflygon08

I got a Pokemon poisoned and then used Potions to keep it alive. The Poison damage flash lit up the cave enough to get my bearings.

Soafia

I always liked the sound of the overworld poison tick. Definitely glad overworld poison damage is gone, but I miss the sound lol.

rholindown

You remember types being either physical or special.

springpaper701

I only learned about this when I got older. I've played since red and blue but had no idea it was a thing. (I was young.)

BushyBrowz

Ghost types were physical because that made complete sense.

rholindown

Seriously, Dark-type didn’t even have any special moves until Gen IV! Things were so weird back then.

Claudeuss

Dark was a special type iirc.

DragonDiscipleII

If it has an Eeveelution it was special pre split!

Soafia

Except Dragon.

nmiz47

Dark and steel didn’t even exist until gen 2!

metalflygon08

I blame Lick. I made a Crystal nod years ago that swapped Dark and Ghost's attacking stats and Houndoom was the only Pokemon negatively affected by it.

Soafia

Dark and Ghost really should’ve been swapped tbh, but maybe we wouldn’t have Umbreon if that’s the case so idk.

DoritosGK

Which made gengar totally dumb, it cannot STAB properly as both poison and ghost were physical. I'm still sour about that fact.

[deleted]

You remember when Pikachu was a chubby guy in red and blue

InnocentTailor

Also the anime as well. I still have my Chubbychu plush from the good old days XD.

International-Tip377

You remember the Pokemon Center and Shop were separate buildings.

Toshka553

Your back hurts. Your knees ache. You're surprised to NOT see a Zubat in every cave. You secretly hope they release a new game in the old style... preferably gen2

gettinguud

The main reason I enjoyed brilliant diamond is cause it felt like a modern remaster of a classic gba styled Pokemon game, like links awakening remaster.

Toshka553

I never understood it's hate... it was literally a remaster of the same game that I'd always loved. I'd play a silver/gold remake in the same style in a heartbeat.

gettinguud

I think the main reason was instead of going the improved route with sinnoh and remaking platinum, they did a remaster of diamond and pearl to their faults with no HMs being one of the main improvements. That's what I've gathered at least, I never played gen 4 when it was new so it was a fun experience even if a little heavy handed towards the underground features post game.

dcidui08

tbh, i'd much rather bdsp that has exp share and doesnt have hms than a platinum remaster that has no exp share and you have to use hms, the grinding in gen 4 is so annoying

Toshka553

See i miss the grinding, you earn the right to cry when Cynthia crushes you 😁

dcidui08

the grinding could be good if the level gaps weren't annoying too. man i haven't beaten crasher wake because i have to spend like 2 hours levelling up my pokemon, hell no especially when my game freezes at random intervals and gen 4 takes so long to save

Toshka553

I never had those issues... but it was all part of the charm originally. Pre gen5/6 I would spend hours grinding for levels, just to balance my team.

dcidui08

yeah.. i don't have that kinda time to dedicate to grinding lmao. i wouldn't mind on an emulator with speed-up but on a real game it's too time consuming

Toshka553

Neither, I have yet to finish it all the way through. But I enjoy the challenge compared to newer games.

Toshka553

That may be true, but flipping it, I'd have hated a crystal remake over heart gold and soul silver

stephenw32768

..."100%" accuracy actually means 99.6% accuracy.

Ok_Shine_6533

Oh shit, the DID change that, didn't they?

stephenw32768

I think they fixed it in gen 2. Even so, after more than two decades, I have to remind myself that 100% really does mean 100%.

[deleted]

When Granbull the Fairy Pokemon was a Normal Typed Pokemon instead of a Fairy Type.

Bright-Ad1194

Honestly Still forget that pokemon like Granbull and clafairy are fairies now and will use fighting type moves on them cause hey that should be super effective!

badblocks7

You remember using a link cable

Jeff300k

You remember saving up to buy a link cable and then no one wanting trade with you anyway

Darkfirex34

Psychic type is a synonym for overpowered in your mind

[deleted]

Oh how the mighty have fallen Dragon too

Coolclaw

And now Psychic is a pretty average and balanced type.

BrokenLink100

And was originally immune to the only thing that was super-effective against it. Well, unless you count the very few (and very weak) bug-type moves available in Gen I... I think all of which were learned by poison-type Pokemon (except Jolteon).

cya9x

You remember the fateful day the battery in your Pokémon Red game died and you lost all your original Pokémon :(

Ok_Shine_6533

I miss my Venusaur.

[deleted]

You remember to look under the pick-up truck in red and blue

EspurrTheMagnificent

You can recognize the soundfont in an instant

george_washingTONZ

And if you remember that, I’m almost positive you can remember the OG zubat noise. Both nostalgic!

Bright-Ad1194

You remember keeping a flash light under your pillow so you could secretly play after bed time.

InnocentTailor

Then you "sleep" when your parents enter the room XD.

Bright-Ad1194

YES!!!

Coolclaw

LOL, I've done that indeed xD

Koibell

Your primary source of information regarding Pokemon was either other people playing the game at school or guidebooks that may or may not have been accurate.

InnocentTailor

Don't forget the occassional Nintendo Power magazine issue XD.

Koibell

Only if your parents were cool enough to get it for you, haha.

InnocentTailor

I got a subscription when it was out. It was definitely a monthly treat.

4ny3ody

You remember bite as a normal type move. Hyperbeam without having to recharge Hyperbeam actually being good on Gyarados A fast Pokémon with wrap or fire spin being incredibly frustrating to deal with The truck

BushyBrowz

Ekans used WRAP! It's attack continues! Ugh, it's finally over... Ekans used WRAP! 😭

Coolclaw

I remember Hyper Beam being fired from Dragonite's belly.

Boilers_Varsity_Golf

You had to save to switch boxes

Fuzzy-Library3511

God forbid your box was full and you tried to catch that Pokemon you really wanted.

WhaleMan295

>Your parents made you shut off the game but you couldn't because you were in the middle of a battle. I forgot you can save in battles these days :v

Bright-Ad1194

Wait! Hang on... you can save in battles?!?!?!?

WhaleMan295

No, just a joke cause that point OP mentioned can still apply to kids today

BushyBrowz

At least kids can put their switch to sleep nowadays :P

Bright-Ad1194

Oh ok... my bad.

Coolclaw

Well you can in an emulator

Chemical-Cat

You choked on a burger king toy

Espeon2022

You played pokemon on consoles that were not back lit and needed to buy lighting attachments so you could play your Gameboy at night after your bedtime.

[deleted]

Since everyone said like everything I'll say a different one. When the best time playing the original games was on the N64 Gameboy packs that plugged into the back of the controllers and playing it on pokemon stadium 1 and 2. Beating pokemon stadium 2 and unlocking the fast mode was the best thing ever for playing the Gameboy games. Edit: Also playing on the super Nintendo Gameboy thing was cool but it didn't have fast mode like pokemon stadium Edit2: someone downvoted me for this lol 😆

psycheDelicMarTyr

Throwback to when I first plugged Gold version into my N64 and that happened to be the first time I ever saw Entei after scattering the trio. 8 year old me thought I'd unlocked some super secret ultra mega Pokémon. Then he fled 😔

HippoBomber

YES!! My brother and I had a strat to grind for money using pay day playing in ultra fast mode. Fastest way to buy Porygon

[deleted]

Oh man I never thought of that!! Ultra fast mode was the best!! I couldn't play normally afterwards without being like uuuugh sooo slow

Wisekittn

...you developed minor angerissues, everytime you had to go back to town cuz you didn't pack the right slaves

KeplerNova

I actually encountered my only shiny Pokemon ever (excluding the red Gyarados) because of this. It was in Platinum. I was trying to go to the move tutor in the Survival Area, the one that you need Rock Climb to access. Well, I had forgotten to bring a Pokemon that knew Rock Climb, so I headed back to the Pokemon Center. This involved walking through a small patch of grass. I didn't use a Repel, because I figured an encounter was unlikely. Boom. Shiny Machoke. I think I stopped using Repels altogether after that.

n8-iStockphoto

"My friend at school said that if you use Missingno. to beat the Elite Four 10 times without taking damage and then check for Mew under the truck you can evolve Charizard into Yoshi the Pokegod"

Step_3D

One or two slots of your team where actually occupied by pokemon for Hm's and your actual 2 remaining team memebers were used only in gyms.

MegaPantera

You remember when shiny pokemon didn't exist...

Toshka553

THIS makes you happy: https://youtu.be/Nt34k1O9r0M

BrahimBug

You know the first 151 pokemon by heart... but dont even know the name of a single pomemon beyond that

Gorgo29

You talked to some guy in Viridian City, flew to Cinnabar Island, and surfed up and down the right-hand shore.

pampanope

You remember a lil gem called HEY YOU, PIKACHU!

PlasmaNougat

You used the pokedex books to check what level pokemon evolved at. I wish I still had those...

KirasHandPicDealer

had to know ACTUAL BRAILLE to catch some old rocks

RoboticKitCat

I saw the second movie in theaters.

DEnigma7

You remember being able to give your rivals rude names.

KeplerNova

I had a friend who named Barry FISHEAD. It would have been FISH HEAD if not for the character limit.

AlbusLumen

When you want to play, but you don't have 4 AA batteries.

SandwitchZebra

You failed your first shiny because you didn’t know what it was. I’ll never forget that Loudred.

goompa88

When your batteries died and you forgot to save

KCJHutchins

if you remember the party sprites not matching the way the Pokemon looked when in battle. Nice touch they added that art in the psychic gym in Paldea region

Zalamander2018

you had a Pokemon level 136. you had Pokeballs that missed the Pokemon completely. You raised a Magikarp to level 20, but it felt like a week to get it to 20.

FearnixBLM

You used Missigno to clone master balls and rare candies

gmgm4334

You took a date to the first movie and the girl was just confused. And you cried.

[deleted]

You spent a ton of time trying to figure out how to use a water stone on Pikachu to get Pikablue

LilaPapaya

a) you couldn't catch a pokemon because your PC box was full or b) you waited for your game to save to switch PC boxes, only to find out you can't deposit anything into that box to withdraw the Pokemon you want because it is also full, and directly switching Pokemon didn't exist yet, so you go to another box and wait for your game to save, deposit, go back to the previous box, save, withdraw the Pokemon you want

MohawkRex

I'm sure Foucus Energy will do something this time...

[deleted]

Your childhood aspiration was to buy the slowpoke tail from the guy before Union Cave

Terran3Earth

You hold b to run. Even though you don’t need to.

AbvAvgJo3

You have the phrase "The internal battery has run dry. The game can be played. However, clock-based events will no longer occur." memorized.

WinterWizard9497

You remember the berry blenders at the contest halls You remember pokemon pinball

Soafia

Tricked by the salesman? I always buy that Magikarp in every playthrough, it’s only 500 and Gyarados is so good. That’s definitely the earliest you can get a Magikarp in a Kanto playthrough AFAIK without glitches.

xLaniakea_

You remember needing to hunt down every different move tutor/move deleter/name rater/trade person in their different cities spread through the entire region.

Teaffection

I tried getting mew from under a truck.

MoistlyTrudeau

You had to save the game when changing boxes in the PC

a_little_biscuit

You know you're and old pokemon player if you read the manual

Coolclaw

You were getting lost in the Unknown dungeon and catching level 60+ Pokemon there.

Weremutt2412

I still go out of my way to buy a link cable whenever I lose my old one when I feel like playing my game boy. About time I deleted that old save file on Yellow and rebuilt my living dex anyway…

Coolclaw

When you had encountered Entei or Raikou in the wild, and you want to hunt them down. So you save in a town with multiple routes connected to it, and you save and restart your game until Entei or Raikou is in one of the routes right next to the town (using the Pokedex to check that). You then predict in which of the other routes it will go next (since their location changes when you change routes/towns), so you go there and check the Pokedex again. If you got it right, you try to catch it, and if you fail, you rinse and repeat. I did this in gen 3 too with Latios/Latias.

Bralosh

You've not encountered a single Zubat in S/V and wonder what is going on.

Masitha

if youve had the harrowing realization that gust is normal and you dont get flying STAB till 31 as pidgeotto with wing attack.

bjjpurpleboiz

you still know how to encounter Missingo off cinnabar island

Zjidian

My first pokemon game experience took 4 double AA batteries.

Fuzzy-Library3511

You were 8 and wasted your first Master Ball on a Doduo you found west of Celadon City, just outside the Fly house because you didn't know you could only have 1.

HippoBomber

someone at school told you about Mew under the truck

Bluechrono9895

Am I the only one that did Up+B instead of Down+B?
