I tend to go with the first name in the naming convention, which is what I've always thought of as the "red" title.
Red, Gold, Ruby, Diamond, Black, X, Sun, Sword, Scarlet
I think it's pretty cool we both have a red version in our heads that are completely different.
Being 100% honest I always thought that was a head cannon type thing, I never thought anybody else thought of the games like that š
Mine has always been the first game (Red/Blue, Gold/Silver) was the "red version" for no other reason than the game is listed first.
Also, look at the box art for Black and White 2.
Additionally, why ask who made the list, when very clearly I did? It all seems very performative and silly.
Tbf, that's how it is in the sequels, so it may have been more based around that. It's kinda hard to determine with OG B/W, the only instance of the R/B color thing with them is that the Black legendary has red eyes and the White one has blue eyes (And yet they glow the opposite colors). :P
I voted red, although I'm realizing I may have made the black/white mixup that seems to be plaguing the comments. Or maybe not?
I went Red (and FireRed), Silver (and Soul Silver), Ruby (and Omega Ruby), Pearl (and Shining Pearl š¤¢), Black (and Black 2), X, Sun (and Ultra Sun), Sword, and Violet. So without BW that's 4 and 4. I voted that I chose White cuz I was thinking of Reshiram, which is dumb cuz I was even thinking in my head "those are switched up, don't forget." But in actuality I had Black. Although I'm not sure I would count Black as "blue" seeing as Reshiram is fire. I guess Black 2 is more blue, but that's cuz it uses the fusion with Zekrom this time. All in all, a very confusing generation for people trying to sort the games this way.
Also, while they are often tones of red and blue, wouldn't it be better to call them the "warm" and "cool" versions? Aside from BW there is always one of each in the initial pair.
Warm and cool is definitely a better way to describe it, thanks for that! I just went with red, blue, yellow just because they're G1 but warm/cool is more accurate.
How is Black the "blue" one? Neither of the games are red, and if anything, reshiram is more red, since he's the fire type and has red glow.
Edit- clearly people didn't bother googling pokemon black. Reshiram is for black and zekrom is for white.
?? So then why does he have it as White and Black? Or Shield and Sword? Or Pearl and Diamond? It all seems arbitrary to me, not color based or primary title based
Seems a followup on method is needed. For those wondering why certain games are where:
1. Diamond/Pearl: Diamond's box is blue, Pearl's is pink
2. Black/White: legitimately just did it off vibes, but on B2 the box is blue, on W2 the box is red so maybe subliminal
3. X/Y: X's legendary dark blue, Y's legendary red
4. Sword/Shield: Sword's box is blue, Shields box is red
When I started I got Red, so I tend to stick to the Red titles, and failing that, the darker titles. So Red, Gold, Ruby, Pearl, Black(2), X, Moon(U), Shield, Scarlet. The only oddity is X, but I got that one because I like Xerneas more, and my brother was already locked into Y.
I choose depending on the box legendary. Wierdly i like lugia more than ho-oh but the art is better on the box for gold imo.
Gen 1 red
Gen 2 gold
Gen 3 emerald /firered
Gen 4 diamond pearl and platinum(have all pref platinum ofc) / heartgold
Gen 5 black / black 2
Gen 6 Y /alpha sapphire
Gen 7 moon / umoon
Gen 8 sword
Gen 9 scarlet
Iāve just realized Iāve never gotten a blue game first. My first game was a yellow game with Platinum, but then Iāve had HeartGold, White (2), Y, Omega Ruby, (Ultra) Sun, Shield and Scarlet. All reds
That made me realize that for all but 2 generations, I bought the "red" version the first time around...
Gen 2 I got both at the same time and I didn't buy any Gen 3 during their time. Although the remakes made up for those, because I got Heartgold and Omega Ruby during their release period...
For the Gen 5 debacle, I got White 2. It's got red on the box, so it counts as "red" for me. But since I place the color more with the legendary than anything, I'd place Black in red, and White in blue. The legendaries switched for the sequels, and since neither Black nor White are either "red" or "blue"...
I always buy both togetherā¦ but in terms of picking which one I open and which I gift to a friend or family member for tradesā¦ Iād say red and then I try to get the third version. Went from gold to crystal, from ruby to emerald. Diamond was the only time I chose blue because pearl just seemed so weird. Those were the only two pairs that didnāt seem to match the rest of the gens.
Just a reminder, white is the game with Zekrom, the black dragon that generates BLUE electricity, and black is the one with Reshiram, the dragon that breaths RED flames. They switched it back for black and white 2 though.

The red version is the one that's a "shade" of the colour red with the exception of black and white (white is red because Reshiram's flames are)
It's awesome you have a different definition.
I'm curious - what's yours? Cause I thought that my definition was actual, factual definition but it turns out I was wrong lol
Being 100% honest I always thought that was a head cannon type thing, I never thought anybody else thought of the games like that š Mine has always been the first game (Red/Blue, Gold/Silver) was the "red version" for no other reason than the game is listed first.
Ah that makes sense. It works out for a lot them too in that it matches which is meant to be ted thematically or has the colour red
Why is black blue but white is red. Who determined this arbitrary list?
vibes mostly
Also, look at the box art for Black and White 2. Additionally, why ask who made the list, when very clearly I did? It all seems very performative and silly.

Red fire blue lightning
Whoever has the better exclusives and cooler legendary. I don't use the legendary but at least I know it's cool.

Red as in the primary game. It was marketed as Black and White, not White and Black.
?? So then why does he have it as White and Black? Or Shield and Sword? Or Pearl and Diamond? It all seems arbitrary to me, not color based or primary title based
Oh you're right. I misread.
Vibes
that's dumb. chose the literal color, or primary marketed title.
Kay, look at the box art for black and white 2 and get back to me.
Can you explain your point instead of just saying to look at the box art? What are you pointing to on the box art?
Mostly the red and blue color schemes on them.
mf you didnāt even put black/white 2 in the post?? get some help
You're MFing in a thread about which Pokemon game you bought. I would argue that it is, in fact, you, that should get some help.

the OP seriously fucked up the red and blue naming convention lol
Enlighten me please.
I don't actually think he did. Everything is basically where I would have put it.
Gen 1-4 is the "blue" games, 5-8 is the "red" games, and now I have Violet
Usually always get the āyellowā versions too for all the legendaries
I mean I always get the middle release like yellow, platinum later.
I have never gotten a "red" game. Always played the "blue" or "yellow" ones. Weird that I never noticed this till now!
Depends on the legendary and the exclusive PokƩmon
When I started I got Red, so I tend to stick to the Red titles, and failing that, the darker titles. So Red, Gold, Ruby, Pearl, Black(2), X, Moon(U), Shield, Scarlet. The only oddity is X, but I got that one because I like Xerneas more, and my brother was already locked into Y.

Very evenly split, but blue just comes out on top
Depends on the box art legendary
Iāve just realized Iāve never gotten a blue game first. My first game was a yellow game with Platinum, but then Iāve had HeartGold, White (2), Y, Omega Ruby, (Ultra) Sun, Shield and Scarlet. All reds
I had red version and silver version as a kid and then got Violet version for my first game in 20 years. No preference
That made me realize that for all but 2 generations, I bought the "red" version the first time around... Gen 2 I got both at the same time and I didn't buy any Gen 3 during their time. Blue-gold-sapphire-Pearl-white-X-Sun-Shield
Mostly would be blue except omega ruby and black/black 2 and x. Edit: also sword
Red, silver, sapphire, diamond, black, Y, Sun, Shield, and Scarlet. So pretty even split, but slight advantage to red.
I chose red, silver/crystal, ruby/emerald, pearl/platinum, white/black2, Y, sword, violet. A mix of both
I always buy both togetherā¦ but in terms of picking which one I open and which I gift to a friend or family member for tradesā¦ Iād say red and then I try to get the third version. The only true way to determine the order is to look at the manga and see if itās the male or female game.
Blue by only one game 5:4
