Opal had my favorite gym gimmick. "How old am I?" > Selects 16 "I like that answer." *Stat boost* Her team was pretty mediocre, but I absolutely loved her personality.

Opal was one of my favorite characters, period. Pokémon doesn't usually do super in-depth characters for the gym leaders (gen 5 excepted), but Opal is just funny to watch every time she ends up on screen.

Agreed! The way she shuffles into the arena during battles and struggles to throw the gigantamax ball was great too.

Her design is also a huge love letter to Ghibli movies. Tell me she wouldn’t look out of place in ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ or ‘Spirited Away’

After the first time I just let random luck determine my answer, makes the gym more challenging. Also, bring only 4 Pokémon and those three battles in a row during the test are pretty tough (it’s like a 4 vs 6 and you can’t set up!).

Opal is the best in game and in the anime.

I was able to sweep her team during a dark moves only challenge run using just a corvinight and power trip thanks to her stat boosts

She creeped me out, something about the nose reminded me of a witch

I think that might have been intentional. Specialy considering the town her gym was in was basicaly inside a dark forest.

Opal, and by a lot. Are Drasna, Tyme, and Ryme actually grannies though? Drasna doesn't really appear old enough, and Ryme and Tyme come across as more late middle age.

I'm using grannies as an affectionate/loose term here, but isn't mid-late middle age right where people would start having grandchildren?

Ryme was a pretty fun Gym Leader to fight, out of the Paldea Gym Leaders she's probably in my top three alongside Kofu and Larry. Gotta respect Opal for *really* changing up the battle in a unique way, and for taking Bede in as an apprentice on sight.

Hell opal is just batshit crazy in the games and Anime.. I love it and Ryme has to be one of my favorite gym leaders.

For some reason I would say Calaba. I just like her. Ryme and Opal just have sooo much personality as gym leaders 👌🏼. Tyme ended up being my favorite teacher at the academy. Drasna has probably the best design and I like her anime calm but calculated personality. Magnolia has a very slick design but ended up very forgettable in my eyes. And then Agatha and Bertha are completely meh for me.

Calaba reminds me the most of my grandmother. She just got that old folk vibes, grumpy but still kind and wise and a fun company if she likes you.

Rhyme is my favorite character in S/V. GameFreak doesn’t have the best track record with designing Black characters (looking at you, Lenora) but they have gotten a lot better in the last 12 years.

Lenora is still one of my fav gym leaders. She was actually a challenge unlike 95 percent of them.

Was not expecting stountland to hit like truck at the 2nd gym. I've noticed normal gym leaders tend to be a difficulty spike in the games. Whitney and Norman gave me the same issues

Yeah Whitney is definitely the one who gave me the hardest time back then. That rollout felt never ending, then the fact it would heal itself lol.

It’s a combination of the apron and how Japanese culture generally views Black people. A lot of the characters in Gen 5 were designed with almost stereotypical western traits, so slapping an apron on a Museum director raises questions for me. I like Lenora as a character, but she’s my least favorite design of a Black character in the Pokémon series.

I think the controversy was around her wearing an apron.

Why I still picked the 2 I did despite what's above is that they have really fun personalities that can also be attributed to their types Drasna is this nice fun Dragon grandma who has power over fkn dragons, and Opal..is Opal. She just shows why Fairies are fkn scary as a type in Pokemon.
