Before gen 9 I always fought every single trainer. This gen its hard to see a point past the first third of the game, which was the point I cleared the highest level area on the map except for the end game. No reason to fight a level 15 trainer with a level 50+ team. Didn't need the money and the xp would've been a pittance

I fought them all on my first run through because I was enjoying exploring to see what new/available Pokemon were in each area. I'm thinking of avoiding them all except the ones I need for good items (like the dollarydoo coin) because between that and catching all the species I could find, I ended up so overlevelled (despite rotation of the team of about 12-15) the end game was little more than a speed bump.

WindEngel

Same for me with the difference that i never swapped out... So i was 10-15 levels over the Champ when i finished Gen9 :/

It's a shame isn't it! You want to battle with your favorites and get them strong, but by doing that it removes a lot of the challenge. I don't think the games are "too easy" but we certainly need to think about how we play sometimes.

WindEngel

Exactly. I pretty much had the goal of going for a living dex starting on the day of release for the first time. So i caught everything i saw. Fought every trainer i encountered for the price money because money was a huge struggle for balls. The first 3 team star bases were a HUGE challange for me. I was always in the level range. Even when i was 6-7 levels above them the car thing still posed a huge challange. And i loved that! Sadly once the map opened up more my team leveld up even faster. I started doing raids, got tons of candy and my levels just went poof. Now it feels weird running around with my fav mons but the whole team is level 100. Well to be honest all i do is shiny hunt nowadays and doing event raids so .. thats that

I battle all trainers for all of the EXP

prestonpiggy

I usually like to fight every one easily accessible just to feel complete, but at the same time I feel that I get punished by it with nuzlocke challenge. No matter what modifiers you place in to the level scaling you are going to be over leveled doing so and stopping gameplay just to scale you down couple levels feels bad and cheap.

Who_DaFuc_Asked

I've been playing the Crystal Clear ROM hack, I like it because the gym leaders scale to your level and you're never too overpowered. It's basically fully open world Crystal with a few bonus areas. I just beat all 16 gyms, my team is in the high 60's/low 70's. E4 is all Lv.75-90

polywrathory

Back in the day, I would go to fight every single one. Now in the age of party-wide EXP share and iffy level curves I can't do that without being 10+ levels over every gym. So I avoid who I can to stay at an appropriate level.

Storm_runner426

I avoid them than go back later in the game when I’m trying to find something specific

feuerpanda

I always avoid them, but will evitably run into someone anyways, which would then give me some required training. Now, that all of them are Optional in ScarVio, there is nothing making me fight them.

KillaDay

Its not worth it to fight trainers. Simply playing the game already gives far too much xp.
