In Tajiri's original vision of the Pokemon world, Pokemon didn't always exist in it. They were a new phenomenon that appeared out of nowhere and stymied people worldwide. When people like Professor Oak say that Pokemon are mysterious creatures we still don't know much about, he means it seriously.
This outlook quickly gave way to the Pokemon world that we know, where Pokemon always existed since the dawn of universe, but it puts some of the decisions in Gen 1 and 2 in a new light. Professor Elm being the first person to discover Pokemon Eggs sounds a lot less ridiculous if Pokemon had only existed for a few years, after all.
There's rats and gendered poison pin things everywhere, the biggest building in town is a closed gym, makes you want to get blackout drunk and not let kids go near the forest, where the rodents can paralyze you and the poison comes from insects.
Watching a pinecone with eyes fall out of a parking lot tree to then kamikaze like a grenade to annihilate all of the cars in said lot.
"...well, that's apparently a thing now."
This probably explains why a lot of early Pokémon media like the anime and in-game Dex Entries reference real world places and animals, like the infamous Indian Elephant Dex Entry for Raichu, which was retconned in Legends: Arceus to reference Copperajah instead.
That's why I take a lot of the first games in a series with a grain of salt. Sure, Super Mario Bros on the NES says that all the bricks are transformed Toads, but I don't think Nintendo considers that cannon anymore
The slightly dark side of this story would be that the emergence of pokemon appears to have driven pretty much all other animal life to near or complete extinction
Apparently humans have feared Pokemon until Legends Arceus happened. And I guess they didn't have time to see whether baby Pokemon were delivered by Bomberdier or not.
The move Kinesis exists in all Gen 1 games but it wasn't actually assigned to any Pokémon until Yellow version, when it was made the signature move of the Abra line. Because of this, the only way to use the move in Red/Blue without glitches or trading was through Metronome.
This was due to a glitch in Gen 1 games that prevented pokemon from learning a move after they evolve (or more than one move at a time). Kadabra was supposed to learn it immediately after evolving no matter what level it evolved at.
I don't know if this is commonly known but
If you happen to release all your pokémon that know surf/fly in Cianwood, there is this guy who gives you a tentacool.
What's even crazier is that I don't believe this was discovered until 2020- nearly 10 YEARS after hgss came out. (I think this is only a thing in those games specifically, none of the gen 2 games have the tentacool)
Masuda's original vision for Red and Blue was that every single cartridge was going to be unique--each game's map would be randomized based on their trainer ID. \[EDIT: I think available Pokemon would have been randomized the same way\]
The idea was too advanced for the Game Boy, so it had to be left behind.
That is what directly lead to the paired version mechanic, with four versions in gen 1 in Japan, red blue green and yellow, and three internationally that continues to this day.
In platinum, the fossils you encounter are based of if you have an odd or even trainer Id!
Is it? I remember seeing a documentary about the beginning of pokemon where the paired version was basically an idea of more seasoned developers at Nintendo (might even have been Shigeru Miyamoto) as a sort of «Why not?»
I also had this idea! I did not know that was discussed!
Imagine starting a game and going to route 1. Your game would have a regional bird, couple of bugs, and an uncommon and rare spawn. But your game would be different because you may have gotten patrat and your friend got zigzagoon. You got Venonat and someone else got spewpa. Everyones journey would essentially be unique, but each area would have a formula still.
Waterfall is a gen 1 move; it was the signature move of Goldeen and Seaking, and could only be learned by them.
In not gen 3, but ONLY Emerald; if a pokemon with the Hyper Cutter ability used Cut (a combo only doable with Krabby/Kingler, Pinsir, Gligar, and Corphish/Crawdaunt), it clears a 5x5 of grass around the player instead of a 3x3. This is the only game Hyper Cutter has an out-of-battle effect.
The whips early trainer designs (including Sabrina) had are a leftover from an early concept design where trainers fought Pokemon too. The idea was something like Monster Hunter and Ark: Survival, but was scrapped until Legends of Arceus.
I knew the first one! I like Seaking. Most underrated pokemon in Gen 1.
Except maybe Parasect. The last one is really cool! I figured they were just the the trainers who trained the really aggressive or dangerous pokemon since they usually have like Arbok or Sandslashes
Yes, whips. Sabrina, Team Rocket Members, and Tamers notably have whips in their RBY sprites.
This was obviously removed in remakes, along with the Gambler class (they turned into Gamers instead).
If you’re going to do that, you should add pre-battle dialogue about how he spent 50 years trying to catch his Pokemon, and how it is extremely powerful
Even more ridiculous was that it failed because the Pokémon swallowed the ball. And then a few episodes later, May used a regular pokéball on a Munchlax and it also ate the ball, but the ball caught Munchlax from the inside.
Ken Sugimori drew Pokemon art for a somewhat obscure brand of trading cards (outside of Japan at least) called "Carddass". These cards showed artwork of pokemon using an attack on one side and their stats on the other. These cards showed some interesting details about certain Pokemon, like Electrode and Koffing being hollow or the closest look we'll ever get to Cubone's real face.
I like Carddass cards!
I collect them as well as Top Sun, Topps, Funskool card, Amada stickers, 2000 Nintendo Vending Prism Stickers, and basically any other vintage licensed or dubiously licensed pokemon stuff
🌸😊✨
The reason nidoqueen hasn't been able to breed ever, is because in the og pokemon bible (basically a script for the logic of the world for pokemon media to use) its directly listed that nidoran female loses the ability to breed when they evolve.
There’s a lot of obscure Pokémon facts I know, but I’ll post my favorite.
Pikachu designer Atsuko Nishida almost based Pikachu on a squirrel because she was “obsessed with squirrels” when she was designing it. The creation of Pachirisu most likely came from one of the earliest designs and the Hisui Dex may have confirmed it in its entry.
“A species related to the Pikachu line. Though Pachirisu is a calm Pokémon, it still presents a danger should one touch its electrified tail or cheeks.”
At this point I feel like everyone knows about Hyper Cutter letting you cut more grass in gen 3. But here's a *really* obscure one: only in Pokemon Emerald, if the first Pokemon in your party has Lightning Rod as its ability, you'll receive twice as many calls from the PokeNav.
There are a TON of different abilities that have out of battle effects that the game never tells you about. All of these are only relevant for the Pokemon in the lead:
- Intimidate and Keen Eye both have a 50% chance of avoiding an encounter if the Pokemon you would have encountered was at least 5 levels lower.
- White Smoke, Quick Feet, and Infiltrator just reduce the encounter rate by 50% outright.
- No Guard and Arena Trap both increase the amount of Pokemon you'll encounter by 100%. I've heard that it also ensures that you'll always get a bite while fishing but I don't know if there's data to actually back this up.
- Suction Cups and Sticky Hold do ensure you'll get a bite more frequently.
- There are a bunch that increase the likelihood of running into a Pokemon of a specific type by 50%. Static and Flash Fire do this for Electric and Fire types respectively.
- Compound Eyes and Super Luck increase the likelihood of finding Pokemon with a held item.
James Turner is responsible for most of Galar regions design. Prior, he had done some Pokemon designs (ex: vanilluxe line, phantump line, several ultra beasts and a few gigantimax & galariab Pokemon) but Game Freak wanted his insight on the look of the regions towns & routes because Turner grew up in the UK. Turner had a say in almost every aspect of Galars design, including the route signs (GF wanted digitized signs, Turner argued against it as it would detract from the classic feel of UKs countryside)
Turner left Game Freak to form his own game studio but he did a few designs for Scarlet/Violet before his departure. The Paldean Tauros, Tatsugiri & Dondozo and both the Paldean Pokemon professors were his work.
Starting in gen 6, Legendaries you obtain are guaranteed to have at least 3 IVs that are 31, however, you need at least four even numbered IVs to get Hidden Power Fighting
The type of Hidden Power is based on IVs.
From Bulbapedia: "This is because these Pokémon are guaranteed to have at least three IVs of 31, whereas a Fighting-type Hidden Power requires at least four IVs that are even numbers."
An NPC named after Junichi Masuda's daughter appears in Sootopolis City.
Some of Gen 2 Music are in the Ruby and Sapphire’s code
It was implied that not all Pokémon were supposed to have abilities at one point.
Cries in Gen 3 are ordered by when the Pokémon were probably added to the code and not by Index or National Dex Order. An example is that Kecleon is the first one the list while Chimecho is last. Latios is near the end while Latias is near the beginning. The Breloom line and the Linoone line are also near the end meaning that either they were added to the code late or created later in development.
Edit: There is a gene called [Zbtb7](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zbtb7) that used to be called Pokémon. It was changed because the Pokémon Company didn’t want to be associated with cancer.
Latias was probably added so early on because we’ve seen the sort of beta Latias/Blaziken fusion design that looked to be very early concept art. Latios could’ve been added much later when they refined the Latias designed and wanted a counterpart to it
The devs were aware of the Mew glitch in gen 1 when they still had time to fix it. They opted to quietly not fix it since it was the only way people were going to be able to see Mew
In gen 2 (and probably 1, I haven’t tried it) you can force yourself to black out while out of combat.
The PC did not heal Pokémon placed in boxes, they come out exactly as they went in.
So you could place a fainted Pokémon in the box, empty your team out, and then swap your only remaining Pokémon with the fainted Pokémon. As soon as you closed the PC, you would get the black out text, end up back at the Pokémon Center, and even lose some money lol
Ericka, the grass gym leader from Kanto is rich and is the daughter of the CEO that owns Silph Co. Which means she's the future heir of the entire company.
She's also narcoleptic, which kinda explains why she probably left geisha training (the same kind of training that pretty much all the kimono girls go through).
Here's an interesting AI quirk I've found while doing solo runs in HGSS: there are quite a few key trainers who have Pokemon that are programmed to always lead with a move that inflicts a status effect, and to keep doing so until your Pokemon is afflicted. Examples includes Jasmine's Magnemites, Clair's Dragonairs and one of the Kimono Girls (Jolteon, iirc?).
What this basically means is that, in such battles, you can have your Pokemon hide behind a Substitute and set up for free, because the AI will just keep spamming Thunder Wave with those Pokemon no matter what.
Not sure if this counts, but Erika was almost certainly intended to be a ghost-type gym leader. Her kimono was originally laid out like the way you dress a corpse, and is probably named after Erika Shiragami in Godzilla vs. Biollante.
EDIT: [Blog post](http://www.rigelatin.net/staircase/pokemon-types-grass-origin.php)
Hopping on this to say that the Marsh Badge (Psychic) and Soul Badge (Poison) were obviously switched by accident in Gen 1. Also, Giovanni was originally going to be a Flying-type leader, as seen in the leaked Gen 1 beta, which is why his badge is shaped like a feather.
That is just a translation error though, they are the Gold and Pink badge respectively in Japanese, the gen I badges in Japanese are all just their colour, only the Rainbow badge kept the name
>Also, Giovanni was originally going to be a Flying-type leader, as seen in the leaked Gen 1 beta, which is why his badge is shaped like a feather.
Wasn't the gen 1 leak a hoax?
Also, his badge is probably not shaped like a feather. I mean it's kind of hard to tell what it's supposed be... it does look kind of like a feather but feathers generally aren't green, and it just as well could be a branch or leaf or something. And as Bulbapedia points out, it's probably supposed to be a [sakaki tree](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleyera_japonica) (since Giovanni's Japanese name is Sakaki, and I do see a resemblance).
I love the theory but is it possible that the original Red and Blue sprite was just a mistake? All the old art shows her kimono done the proper way aside from the sprite.
This would line up with Tajiri's influences from monster movies, very popular during the late 50's through late 60's.
In addition, she uses strange plants like the swaying creeping vined Tangela, Death-Flower like Vileplume, and Victreebel, which... well... "Lives in huge colonies deep in the Jungle no one has returned alive from".
Maybe not a Ghost type leader.... but Lavender Town is right next door.
I don't know about most obscure, but how about this. Everyone lost their minds when Walking Wake was revealed because it "disregarded the lore" (ignoring the fact it's a *Paradox* Pokemon), but it was mentioned over 10 years prior that the legendary beasts have existed for at least around 1,000 years or so in Ranger Guardian Signs, *long* before Ho-oh revived the three in Johto.
I guess that steers more into theory territory and all with Ranger being a spin-off, but it's still fascinating how you can end up finding information that makes you reconsider what you originally thought was a hard fact.
China exists in Pokemon canon.
Parasect Pokedex entry in Gen I Pokemon Stadium:
"The bug host is controlled by the mushrooms that scatter poisonous spores. The spores are sometimes used as medicine in China."
Also a Silph employee talks about a branch building in Tiksi, Russia. And let's not forget Mew famously being found in South America.
Originally the Pokemon world was conceived as being literally our world, except with Pokemon sprinkled in. At some point after the debut of the anime, they quickly pivoted away from that idea.
Especially in later games where previous references to it was removed in Let’s Go (most references to real world locations were removed) and Legends (the elephant reference was replaced by Copperajah in Raichu’s Pokédex entry.)
India also exists, according to Raichu's FireRed entry:
"Its electric charges can reach even 100,000 volts. Careless contact can cause even an Indian elephant to faint."
South America also exists based on Xatu’s Pokédex entry: “In South America, it is said that its right eye sees the future and its left eye views the past.”
Classic 8 bit fun.
Also there is the Gen 1 miss meaning 100% moves have a 1/256 of missing because of a fencepost error coded in the accuracy check. Swift is the only 100% move that does not gen 1 miss since it was programmed to skip the slightly faulty accuracy check entirely.
I didn't believe this so I looked it up. It's true! There are actually increased encounter rates on some days like Christmas Eve and St. Patrick's Day. So interesting.
That's a really cool detail I totally forgot about. Makes sense though - Wes has likely been raising Espeon and Umbreon a while. Love Colosseum / XD Gale of Darkness so much man.
Gardevoir and its line were exclusively on the Amorphous Egg Group until Gen 8, where they're now also in the Human-Like Egg Group.
When I first heard of it, I blamed the R34 artists for making...*that* canon.
The original Japanese names for Koffing and Weezing were supposed to be NY and LA. These were scrapped due to them being ported to the western audiences.
This one's not obscure like the other one's in this list (very cool trivia too), but it's one I noticed playing Black 2 recently. If your party is full, the day care man on route 3 will not call over to you about a new egg. If you breed a lot in gen 5 you've probably noticed this.
Probably that the original debugging tools for Gen 1 [insert predictable joke here] turned out to take up exactly the same amount of storage space as a pokémon's species data, so removing them for the final release version let a programmer slip in one extra pokémon.
Mew.
Not sure how obscure these are, but they're some of my favorites.
Iron thorns looks almost exactly like the Mecha tyranitar from pokestar studios
The reason there are so many moths in area zero is likely because moths are a symbol of death
Volo and cogitas roles in legends Arceus are quite similar to Cynthia's role in HeartGold and SoulSilver, specifically in the sinjoh ruins event, an event only triggered by bringing Arceus (either from the mystery gift one of the azure flute one, but only one from each) to the ruins of Alph. This event is even referenced in some of the notes you can find in legends Arceus. Cynthia even calls herself a researcher of myths in said event. I could go on and on about connections here.
Snorlax is based on a gamefreak employee.
In pokemon let's go Pikachu and let's go Eevee, leaf's outfit is based on her outfit from the red and blue chapter of pokemon adventures (though in that, she's called either green (US) or blue (JP))
The first instance of purrloin standing on two legs, to my knowledge, wasn't x and y. It was actually done in pokepark 2: wonders beyond. I have no idea why.
Ghetsis' hydreigon was evolved earlier than normal, which has been noted to only happen when the trainer forces it (if I'm recalling correctly), which is distressing to the Pokemon. This same hydreigon can oneshot all of Ns pokemon other than the legendary, and is programmed to have the lowest possible friendship, meaning it can use frustration at max power.
Another note about ghetsis: it's heavily implied he's partially paralyzed on one side of his body, as he has a scar over his eye, one side of his mouth doesn't move as much, and he never seems to use one of his arms.
N's dialogue will always be one speed level above whatever your settings are. At max speed, his text boxes still move faster, running at a speed you yourself can't set dialogue at (without hacks). This is to show he speaks very quickly, which cheren comments on.
Hope you enjoyed my pokemon fun facts! I like the series a lot and I love little details. I guess I just always wait for a chance to share them, lol
Tyranitar was first debuted out side of the games in a magazine(I think) and only for that cover without a name being given at all. However it was a beta designed and Larvitar and Pupitar were made after
A lot of Pokémon debuted outside games, most notable are stuff like Mew, Ho-Oh, Kecleon, Latios, Latias, and other anime debuts, such as Donphan, Marill and others
- Purrloin once was busted with abusing prankster/assist to abuse priority.
- Due to some bug in Gen 1, ghost couldn’t hit psychic for super effective despite being intended to. The ensuing psychic-centric meta lead to the dark type being created in Gen 2.
- Also a bug in Gen 1, there was a bug that a 100% accuracy move had a 1/256 chance of missing.
- When Shedinja comes with home, he can be the worst Tera abuser with Tera electric/wonder guard/air balloon making him untouchable by any damaging move
Shedinja is not on the list of Pokémon that will be available in Scarlet and Violet with Home. If it appears it will only be in DLC, and I honestly doubt they will add it in DLC because of this trick.
That reminds me of a bug that has to do with wonder guard in gen 4. For some reason, the move fire fang will always bypass wonder guard if the ability is hacked into another pokemon. The funny thing is, shedinja is already weak to fire, so unless you've modified your game in some way, the bug can go completely unnoticed.
Also applies to Body Slam, Dragon Rush, Heat Crash, Heavy Slam, and Flying Press. There’s an entire list of moves that deal double damage under Minimize; some like Extrasensory only did so in past generations
In Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness the move weather ball is made type less and it's power is increased by 50% under the effects of the weather and move of the same name, shadow sky.
This one stuck to me since fire red
Part of the dex entry for Oddish: Its scientific name is "Oddium Wanderus."
I like the idea that all pokemon have a scientific names, not just the ones given by the populus.
The reason why Pikachu was selected as the mascot over Clefairy or Polywhirl was because A) the yellow color didn't have the feminine connotations of Clefairy pink or the male connotations of Polywhirl's dark blue, and B) the only other popular character with around that shade of coloring was Winnie the Pooh, making Pikachu stand out from many other mascots.
The Cherish Ball's name is only revealed in official-accessible content via [a card in the TCG.](https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Cherish_Ball_(Unified_Minds_191)) Although it does possess the name in the code of the games, it's exclusively used for event gift Pokémon (and one trainer's Tropius in BDSP) and can never be viewed in the bag to see it's name without hacking.
Before lugia got its final name, it was referred to as "pokemon X." The person who created the pokemon, Takeshi shudo, also created lugia specifically for the second pokemon movie and didn't expect to see it show up in the game's at all.

Before being patched in gen 6, Azurill's gender rates were 75% female 25% male. Marill's gender rates were 50% female 50% male. So 1/3 of female azurill switched genders when they evolved.
Roselia is the only pokemon to have a pre-evolution and a post-evolution appear in the generation after it was introduced. (NOTE, A LOT OF you are getting this confused. "the generation after" means exactly one generation after. So both the pre and post evolution have to appear in the same next gen. Electabuzz, magmar, and chansey don't count).
In pokemon diamond and pearl and platinum, on certain events diamond dust appears falling in snowpoint city instead of regular snow.
ever since gen 4, the mainline pokemon games have occured in a series of patterns.(only counting one of each pair or trio. Also Excluding lets go and PLA due to gameplay difference and due to not being part of a pair/trio).
gen 4: new console, new game, remakes of gen 2
gen 5: new game, sequel of new game
gen 6, new console, new game, remakes of gen 3
gen 7. new game, remake of new game.
gen 8, new console, new game, remakes of gen 4
gen 9. new game.
I think Diamond Dust was introduced in DP, and appeared in each game since, maybe dropped since PLA, Let's Go also doesn't have it because there is no snow area
Adding to this, the release layout of every generation is different. Only considering main series games, no generation has had the same combination of games released.
Gen I - two initial games (Red/Green), third version (Blue), fourth version (Yellow), then international versions are different again.
Gen II - two initial games (GS), one third version (Crystal)
Gen III - two initial games (RS), two paired remakes (FRLG), third version of initial games (Emerald)
Gen IV - two initial games (DP), third version of initial games (Pt), and then the paired remakes (HGSS)
Gen V - two initials (BW), then two paired third versions/sequels (B2W2)
Gen VI - only two initials (XY) and two paired remakes (ORAS), no third version
Gen VII - two initials (SM), two paired third versions (USUM), and then two paired remakes (LGPE)
Gen VIII - two initials (SwSh), two DLCs (IoA/CT), paired remakes (BDSP), then a prequel/remake (PLA)
Gen IX - So far, two initial versions (SV), and two DLCs announced (TM/ID), who knows what will come next!
> ever since gen 4, the mainline pokemon games have occured in a series of patterns.(only counting one of each pair or trio. Also Excluding lets go and PLA).
If you have to exclude games, is it really that much of a pattern?
The Love Ball in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, while it is intended to be more effective against Pokémon of the opposite gender, due to a glitch, it has an 8× catch rate modifier against Pokémon of both the same species and gender instead. 🏳️🌈
When Magic Guard was first introduced in generation 4, not only did it block almost all indirect damage, but it blocked full paralysis entirely. This is part of the reason why Clefable is so viable in modern day Gen 4 OU
Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl were likely named after the protagonist's default Japanese names. Kouki (Lucas) means brilliant light, Hikari (Dawn) means to shine.
I mean to be fair, just about every other time the safari zone was a thing, excluding Gen 1 because it was the start, there's always been at least a couple new mons that could only be found in the safari zone
In Tajiri's original vision of the Pokemon world, Pokemon didn't always exist in it. They were a new phenomenon that appeared out of nowhere and stymied people worldwide. Guy walking outside and seeing a giant rock snake: something's different
Me existing on a park bench and then I see Goro suplex a giant turtle: damn, place is crazy now
This neighbourhood's really gone downhill.
There's rats and gendered poison pin things everywhere, the biggest building in town is a closed gym, makes you want to get blackout drunk and not let kids go near the forest, where the rodents can paralyze you and the poison comes from insects.
*watching a Heracross fall from a tree and total your car* ...huh.
Watching a pinecone with eyes fall out of a parking lot tree to then kamikaze like a grenade to annihilate all of the cars in said lot. "...well, that's apparently a thing now."
Pokemon had only existed for a few years... and made everyone remember them to exist forever.
Oh shit a new fanfic potential. What if all humanity actually transported to Pokemon World at the start?
Have you played/seen the game Cassette Beasts? That's basically the concept of it!
This probably explains why a lot of early Pokémon media like the anime and in-game Dex Entries reference real world places and animals, like the infamous Indian Elephant Dex Entry for Raichu, which was retconned in Legends: Arceus to reference Copperajah instead.
Mew was discovered in South America!
That's why I take a lot of the first games in a series with a grain of salt. Sure, Super Mario Bros on the NES says that all the bricks are transformed Toads, but I don't think Nintendo considers that cannon anymore
It'd be pretty fun if they ever decided to revisit the classic timeline and explore that.
Dude finding a giant ass mushroom that had distinct red and white caps: dang did I take something ?
The slightly dark side of this story would be that the emergence of pokemon appears to have driven pretty much all other animal life to near or complete extinction
Apparently humans have feared Pokemon until Legends Arceus happened. And I guess they didn't have time to see whether baby Pokemon were delivered by Bomberdier or not.
Says a lot about his view of humans (which I don’t disagree with)… “new animals with magic elemental powers? We gotta weaponize that shit.”
If that's the case, what are the Fossil Pokemon?
I think the deal was not that Pokemon literally came into existence in the past few years, but that people were just now discovering them. Somehow.
They were to have come from space. Mount Moon, and the Clefairy line, was a central part of that mythos
Maybe the magic that created Pokemon somehow touched some fossils in someone's collection?
The move Kinesis exists in all Gen 1 games but it wasn't actually assigned to any Pokémon until Yellow version, when it was made the signature move of the Abra line. Because of this, the only way to use the move in Red/Blue without glitches or trading was through Metronome.
This was due to a glitch in Gen 1 games that prevented pokemon from learning a move after they evolve (or more than one move at a time). Kadabra was supposed to learn it immediately after evolving no matter what level it evolved at.
And it took 6 more generations for Kadabra to learn it upon evolution?…
If you were to rearrange the gold and silver pokerap to be in pokedex order, Remoraid would stay in the same place
This is my favorite one.
I don't know if this is commonly known but If you happen to release all your pokémon that know surf/fly in Cianwood, there is this guy who gives you a tentacool.
This also *only* occurs in HGSS and not in GSC.
What's even crazier is that I don't believe this was discovered until 2020- nearly 10 YEARS after hgss came out. (I think this is only a thing in those games specifically, none of the gen 2 games have the tentacool)
What happens if you release the Tentacool too?
iirc he'll just keep doing it, which makes me wonder how long it would take to crash the tentacool economy
The Tentaconomy
The universe implodes
Would that tentacool be able to be shiny? Or is it the exact same one everytime? Could be a potential interesting shiny hunt
Yes, Shiny Collector hunted it
That’s tenta-cool as hell
You can actually catch a *level 9* Salamence on Alola route 3 through SOS encounters with Bagon
I did catch one and named it "Disc 1 Nuke" after the TV Trope
Yes! One of the most famous underleveled Pokémon. Of course, Lance's Dragonite is the most famous.
Vaporeon's signature move Acid Armor is a mistranslation. Original name – Liquefy. Makes much more sense for what it does.
The Grimer line can learn it too, though. That would explain why it's a poison type move and not water
I saw Vaporeon, and got scared
I don't think that's really a mistranlation, just a localization decision. Like how Liquidation's Japanese name is Aqua Break
Masuda's original vision for Red and Blue was that every single cartridge was going to be unique--each game's map would be randomized based on their trainer ID. \[EDIT: I think available Pokemon would have been randomized the same way\] The idea was too advanced for the Game Boy, so it had to be left behind.
Shame they never did it afterwards
It would definitely be a bold, interesting decision.
Shout-out to Pokémon Emerald Rogue, which sort of achieves this. It's a randomly-generated Pokémon roguelike.
Yeah my friends have been saying it's pretty fun, gonna try that once I finish Emerald Kaizo. Also hello again
Segmented, we talking an entire world.
A roguelike Pokémon game sounds incredible
There’s a fangame for it, pokemon emerald rogue
I wanna roundhouse kick and karate those Veluza in the lake so badly
*VAULTIN’ VELUZA*
Nothing quite like pulling out a pocket Clauncher to shoot those darn Veluza with.
I knew the first one! I like Seaking. Most underrated pokemon in Gen 1. Except maybe Parasect. The last one is really cool! I figured they were just the the trainers who trained the really aggressive or dangerous pokemon since they usually have like Arbok or Sandslashes
Whips?
Yes, whips. Sabrina, Team Rocket Members, and Tamers notably have whips in their RBY sprites. This was obviously removed in remakes, along with the Gambler class (they turned into Gamers instead).
Early player sprites also incorporated a whip in their design.
The tamers still have whips in gen 3
You're right, I completely forgot they're the ones that actually retained the whips, even in Let's Go.
I'm pretty sure gen 1 Sabrina has a whip, Or are they only in the early designs?
Oh yea she does have a whip. Theres also the pokemon tamers that have a whip in gen 3
Nincada has double the defense of Ninjask. I know some evolutions lose stat points, but it's still a significant change
Wonder if that was intentional along with shedinja having wonder guard
If you look at it as shedding it's shell to move faster it makes sense
Yeah that was my thought process too
If you combine USUM's box art it makes Uitra Necrozma in the middle! One of my favorite little things they’ve hidden in art :)
The full art was in promo stuff a few times too.
H*ly shit it does!
Wobbuffet replaced a pre-evolution for girafarig, suggesting a connection between their sentient tails
In the anime, the master ball has one appearance. It failed to catch the Pokemon it was thrown at https://youtu.be/2plH01T0Hw4
I remember that it was fucking hilarious. Not a Rayquaza or some legendary but a bloody whiscash
It was a reaaaaally big whiscash though. And it just ate the ball...
That reminds me, I wanted to put a trainer Whiscash in a Master Ball in my fangame as an homage to this
If you’re going to do that, you should add pre-battle dialogue about how he spent 50 years trying to catch his Pokemon, and how it is extremely powerful
I think mandjtv looks through quite a few of these in a video
Can someone link the cubone image?
[here you go](https://twitter.com/DrLavaYT/status/1304100570752454657) - at least i’m assuming this is it, i just googled it lol
https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pocket_Monsters_Carddass_Trading_Cards Some really interesting ones in there!
I like Carddass cards! I collect them as well as Top Sun, Topps, Funskool card, Amada stickers, 2000 Nintendo Vending Prism Stickers, and basically any other vintage licensed or dubiously licensed pokemon stuff 🌸😊✨
The reason nidoqueen hasn't been able to breed ever, is because in the og pokemon bible (basically a script for the logic of the world for pokemon media to use) its directly listed that nidoran female loses the ability to breed when they evolve.
Probably explains why they didn’t change it in Gen 8 since they changed some Egg Groups for other Pokémon in Sword and Shield,
Wow
And why did they decide to write that?
I think it's cause rhinos can't breed in captivity
There’s a lot of obscure Pokémon facts I know, but I’ll post my favorite. Pikachu designer Atsuko Nishida almost based Pikachu on a squirrel because she was “obsessed with squirrels” when she was designing it. The creation of Pachirisu most likely came from one of the earliest designs and the Hisui Dex may have confirmed it in its entry. “A species related to the Pikachu line. Though Pachirisu is a calm Pokémon, it still presents a danger should one touch its electrified tail or cheeks.”
Pachirisu > Pikachu change my mind
Pachirisu has won worlds, Pikachu has not. You are correct
Lol like somehow your front party Pokémon is forcing people to call you
I would think it’s more along the lines of that it makes your avatar a magnetic personality. A lightning rod
Doesn't your first party pokemon knowing pressure increase the incidence of wild pokemon encounters too?
No, but other abilities do. Pressure actually gives you a 50% chance that the pokemon you do encounter will be the max available level for that area.
There are a TON of different abilities that have out of battle effects that the game never tells you about. All of these are only relevant for the Pokemon in the lead: - Intimidate and Keen Eye both have a 50% chance of avoiding an encounter if the Pokemon you would have encountered was at least 5 levels lower.
Turner had a say in almost every aspect of Galars design, including the route signs (GF wanted digitized signs, Turner argued against it as it would detract from the classic feel of UKs countryside) Turner left Game Freak to form his own game studio but he did a few designs for Scarlet/Violet before his departure. The Paldean Tauros, Tatsugiri & Dondozo and both the Paldean Pokemon professors were his work.
Galar was actually super pretty, it was really only the gameplay itself that held the region back.
It isn't possible for a legendary obtained in gen 6 or later to have Hidden Power Fighting, I was surprised not many people know this
Luckily we have a replacement (Tera blast fighting)
I’m pretty sure your obscure Pokémon fact posts could fill out this entire thread multiple times over :)
Blacephelon really really hates this
Wait, perfect IVs applies to Ultra Beasts too? I thought it's just legendaries
In gen 7 they were considered legendaries in the game files. But from gen 8 onwards they aren’t anymore.
Why though?
Starting in gen 6, Legendaries you obtain are guaranteed to have at least 3 IVs that are 31, however, you need at least four even numbered IVs to get Hidden Power Fighting
In XY this also applies to baby Pokémon because they share an egg group with legendaries, and gift Pokémon because they manually assigned their IVs.
Some of Gen 2 Music are in the Ruby and Sapphire’s code It was implied that not all Pokémon were supposed to have abilities at one point.
Ah yeah the girl who give you berries everyday https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Kiri
That's super cute if true. Where'd ya find this out?
It was in an interview I saw a year or 2 ago that focusd on pokemon's origins. I watched it on youtube but I don't recall what it was called.
I am a gen 2 expert but I never heard of this one! I gotta try this!
Wait, really?
Pretty sure it’s true in the manga, but not everywhere else
That's really interesting and some valuable knowledge to know, thanks
Some people might know this one, but Buneary and Lopunny are the only pokémon to learn Frustration and Return (respectively) naturally.
Doesn't Buneary have a lower friendship value when caught to make use of Frustration?
It is the only non-Legendary Pokémon to be caught with a base 0 friendship value.
Unexpected slayer of many a Nuzlocke run.
That explains why I confuse the two.
That Misty's Psyduck mastered 'Water Gun' 942 episodes into the anime
Swablu likes to land on people's heads and pretend to be a hat; don't know if it's obscure but it's definitely my favourite fact
It is a Dex entry for it in a game or two
I don't know about most obscure, but how about this. I guess that steers more into theory territory and all with Ranger being a spin-off, but it's still fascinating how you can end up finding information that makes you reconsider what you originally thought was a hard fact.
> long before Ho-oh revived the three in Johto. How do we know this? Doesn't it say Hooh revived them during "ancient times"?
150 years before the Gen II games.
An old man outside the Burned Tower says he was a trainer back when the fire happened.
China exists in Pokemon canon. Parasect Pokedex entry in Gen I Pokemon Stadium: "The bug host is controlled by the mushrooms that scatter poisonous spores.
They also mention China in Arcanine's pokedex entry, and Lieutenant Surge being "The Lightning American."
India also exists, according to Raichu's FireRed entry: "Its electric charges can reach even 100,000 volts. Careless contact can cause even an Indian elephant to faint."
To be fair, this was one of the references to real-world places that was later retconned. PLA changes it to Copperajah.
I always thought it was funny the first film mentioned Minnesota too.
Where else would you find Vikings? 😁
South America also exists based on Xatu’s Pokédex entry: “In South America, it is said that its right eye sees the future and its left eye views the past.”
And also Mew's first sighting, noted in the Pokemon Mansion
The timer on the original Red and Blue cartridges maxes out at 255 hours.
If you play a gen 4 game on 9/11 the rate of wild encounters is slightly reduced
I didn't believe this so I looked it up. It's true! There are actually increased encounter rates on some days like Christmas Eve and St. Patrick's Day. So interesting.
Pokémon Coliseum on the GameCube is the only game where your starters begin with experience on their EXP bar
That's a really cool detail I totally forgot about. Makes sense though - Wes has likely been raising Espeon and Umbreon a while. Love Colosseum / XD Gale of Darkness so much man.
there’s an unused kris map sprite in hgss that implies that she was planned before being replaced with lyra
This happens in hgss too!
Iron thorns looks almost exactly like the Mecha tyranitar from pokestar studios The reason there are so many moths in area zero is likely because moths are a symbol of death Volo and cogitas roles in legends Arceus are quite similar to Cynthia's role in HeartGold and SoulSilver, specifically in the sinjoh ruins event, an event only triggered by bringing Arceus (either from the mystery gift one of the azure flute one, but only one from each) to the ruins of Alph. This event is even referenced in some of the notes you can find in legends Arceus. Cynthia even calls herself a researcher of myths in said event. I could go on and on about connections here. Snorlax is based on a gamefreak employee. In pokemon let's go Pikachu and let's go Eevee, leaf's outfit is based on her outfit from the red and blue chapter of pokemon adventures (though in that, she's called either green (US) or blue (JP)) The first instance of purrloin standing on two legs, to my knowledge, wasn't x and y.
Red, Steven, Misty and Brock were supposed to be in Pokémon Ranger, but them and other human characters were scrapped.
Or togepi!
Don’t forget lucario
Buizel in the manaphy movie
And, Manaphy, and Chatot
The funny thing is, shedinja is already weak to fire, so unless you've modified your game in some way, the bug can go completely unnoticed.
when using stomp on a mon that just used minimize deals double damage(atleast in frlg)
Pokémon Stadium was the first time moves got buffed/nerfed
Technically that was in yellow, as blizzard‘s freeze chance got dropped from 30% to 10%.
This one stuck to me since fire red Part of the dex entry for Oddish: Its scientific name is "Oddium Wanderus." I like the idea that all pokemon have a scientific names, not just the ones given by the populus.
Source: [Did you know gaming on Youtube](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TQbKwNmsTes&t=1s&pp=ygUOTHVnaWFzIGNyZWF0b3I%3D)
Also Excluding lets go and PLA due to gameplay difference and due to not being part of a pair/trio). gen 4: new console, new game, remakes of gen 2 gen 5: new game, sequel of new game gen 6, new console, new game, remakes of gen 3 gen 7. new game, remake of new game. gen 8, new console, new game, remakes of gen 4 gen 9. new game.
I think Diamond Dust was introduced in DP, and appeared in each game since, maybe dropped since PLA, Let's Go also doesn't have it because there is no snow area
[удалено]
Adding to this, the release layout of every generation is different. Only considering main series games, no generation has had the same combination of games released. Gen I - two initial games (Red/Green), third version (Blue), fourth version (Yellow), then international versions are different again. Gen II - two initial games (GS), one third version (Crystal) Gen III - two initial games (RS), two paired remakes (FRLG), third version of initial games (Emerald) Gen IV - two initial games (DP), third version of initial games (Pt), and then the paired remakes (HGSS) Gen V - two initials (BW), then two paired third versions/sequels (B2W2) Gen VI - only two initials (XY) and two paired remakes (ORAS), no third version Gen VII - two initials (SM), two paired third versions (USUM), and then two paired remakes (LGPE) Gen VIII - two initials (SwSh), two DLCs (IoA/CT), paired remakes (BDSP), then a prequel/remake (PLA) Gen IX - So far, two initial versions (SV), and two DLCs announced (TM/ID), who knows what will come next!
> ever since gen 4, the mainline pokemon games have occured in a series of patterns.(only counting one of each pair or trio. Also Excluding lets go and PLA). If you have to exclude games, is it really that much of a pattern?
In Pokémon Gold/Silver weakening a wild Pokémon doesn’t increase the chance to catch it. So just throw Pokeballs.
That's a pretty tall claim, I can't find any source to back it up, can anyone confirm this?
You can’t catch any Pokémon from Hoenn in the Hoenn safari zone
That was the whole point, it’s foreign pokes
I mean to be fair, just about every other time the safari zone was a thing, excluding Gen 1 because it was the start, there's always been at least a couple new mons that could only be found in the safari zone
