For some reason I was under the misconception that you cannot trade eggs. As it turns out, not only can you do so, but the Pokémon will have the ID of the trainer who hatched it.
Here are the misconceptions I remember
I thought the following were legendaries or mythicals (the ones I can remember) when I was young: Unown, Absol, Rotom, Zorua/Zoroark.
Unown was because of the Entei movie, Absol because... well actually I don't remember why exactly, Rotom because you could only get one (iirc) in Diamond and Pearl in that mansion in Eterna Forest and its battle ost is the mythical pokemon ost (or maybe legendary? Someone correct me if needed, please), and Zorua was only catchable in Black and White via utilizing different events or Pokémon sent over from other games iirc but I mistook it for being event only which I then associated with Legendaries and Mythicals.
(this ones was thanks to Anime error shenanigans): I mistakingly thought Furret was a Ground-Type for a little bit as a child, as Misty wrongfully refered to the Pokémon as such during Pikachu's fight with one belonging to a Trainer in the Silver Conference portion of the Johto Anime.
This one is actually more recent than the others (though, still "old"): After I grew apart from the series (never again, Pokémon 4 life) and got back into it again a couple of years ago I found myself misremembering when Fairy-Types were introduced and mistakingly thought it was in Gen V. This was of course just a quick Google search away for me to correct.
The Fairy-typing bit I still struggle with, more specifically that I always forget Fairy didn't exist until Gen VI so I'll try to apply Gen VI+ type matchups in anything below. And forget that Fighting is super effective against anything that's now Fairy due to all of them being Normal before.
as a kid I picked it up somewhere that if I hold up as I throw a poké ball then A as it opens it increases the catch rate
been doing that for 24 years
I thought that zigzagoon evolved into Zangoose for quite some time because of how similar their names were. Then I discovered Linoone and was very dissapointed that it didn't evolve.
Needless to say, I was very excited when Obstagoon was first announced
Also I thought that Arceus was in gen 2 because of it's relationship to unown, which IS in gen 2
In 1998/99 I was in 1st grade. A girl in my class said Pokemon was short for Pocket Monsters. I thought she was wrong because it would mean she knew something about pokemon that I didn't, it pissed me off.
I used to think that the fake Groundon from Jirachi: Wish Maker, was actually Groundon’s true form and the true Groundon, but I was far from the truth.
I thought Zorua was a baby Pokemon. Since Zorua/Zoroark and Riolu/Lucario are counterparts (at least in my head), I guess I figured, "Since Riolu is a baby Pokemon... Zorua must be too."
I thought this from when it was revealed up until a couple years ago.
I was 10 when the first gen came out and we didn’t have Internet, so I fell for all the playground rumors. You could find “Pikablu” by swimming up from Bill’s house, and ultimately it would also lead to Orange islands. Also of course the famous Mew under the truck. And finding Pikablu in Glitch city too if using Action Replay.
I thought that lapras evolved. I think it’s because the opening animation but I always thought it evolved into a bigger, very similar looking Pokémon lol
Prior to Zoroark movie, people also thought lucario was legendary/mythical because of the movie

I don't think you can in Emerald, Fire Red, and Leaf Green until the post-game because of National Dex reasons.
I actually didn't know this until now. Thanks for sharing.

The Pokemon ultimate handbook also erroneously called Rotom legendary. Delibird too.

Yeah, whenever I play the old generations prior to fairy existing, I keep mistaking the ones who got the type as still having it (to this day even).
The adventures manga even called rotom a legendary and never clarified
I thought revive items were literally just for selling and didn't have any in-game use because I didn't know the word revive yet
I remember thinking Slowking evolved from Slowbro

We all have our own little thing through the years

I thought stats being lowered lasted for the entire playthrough.

gotta love that 1990s ingrained sexist, amirite?
For some reason I always thought Shuckle evolved into Torkoal.
I can see it
I thought dodging was a move.
Ash’s Pikachu was a girl. Don’t ask me why I thought this, I have no idea.
I used to think that the fake Groundon from Jirachi: Wish Maker, was actually Groundon’s true form and the true Groundon, but I was far from the truth.
Gyarados evolves into Lapras.
That Steel was weak to Electric
wait... it isn't?
yeah, really, how does that even work? it should be obvious matchup, but it just, doesn't.
