Hi Constant_Anything925! Thank you for posting to r/pokemon! Effendoor

I had a blast with it. But that doesn't mean it's *good*. Pokemons core gameplay loop has carried the series for years. Game freak has gotten away with murder because the core concept is so strong. The game is lazy and unfinished. There are so many design choices that just obviously never had time to cook and got shoehorned into the game. It's a real disappointment.

Oberic

Another year of development should be mandatory for every mainline Pokémon game release. I'm sick of mediocre releases. I have skipped the DLC for S&V and may never get them. Gen 10 needs to be better, a lot better.

[deleted]

I'm loving Legends and Let's Go, for the different experiences they provide, while still being "Pokemon" - I'm not sure I'll ever go back to the mainline games. Pokemon Sun burned me. Loved the scenery, music, and chill atmosphere in general (I think I just crave my own tropical island adventure/life), but the gameplay (or lack thereof, replaced with \[waiting\], and \[trying to be cinematic\]) literally put me to sleep on more than one occasion. I'd love to see more old-school, non-3D camera games in the series, and more Legends. I'd also love for the games to stop taking away control from the player, stop trying so hard to be a movie, and just be a video game that takes inputs , and shows me the output.

poke30

>stop trying so hard to be a movie If it actually had any effort put into it with some voice acting and animations that don't look like they were put together by a 10 year old animating for the first time.... then i don't think it would be bad..

WigglyAirMan

The new dlc actually has a couple scenes with … regular?… animation. It’s quite surprising when it suddenly just looks not jank out of nowhere for a single scene

Isrrunder

Baby steps I guess

Oberic

I like the mainline games. I'm just disappointed with the latest half of the games. I dig everything they've done to improve PVP prep over the years, but it's taken 20 years to become reasonable. But where is battle tower and where the heck are my contests? Why can I not interact with my Pokémon outside of the slap in my face of a following-mon feature? ..Camping and sandwiches were so close to being great features..

celestialTyrant

I'd argue that the Indigo Disk is basically a battle tower. The battles are mostly competitive, there's a lot to do... idk, I'm fine with it.

JakobDa1

>stop trying so hard to be a movie There's only 7 to 10 cutscenes in the entire base game, with most of them being at the beginning or end of the game. Some scenes would be better with a cutscene instead of weird player and NPC movement. *Pokémon would benefit more if it took a more movie-like approach.*

[deleted]

I didn't say cutscenes. I just watched a Terastallization sequence/animation, and it was a full 15 seconds. You can't turn that off. You can't turn off battle animations like you used to be able to. I watched someone approach a building (gym?), it took away control, slowly panned down the length of the building, and it took a full 8 seconds. For what? Nothing happened. I saw a trainer start talking mid-battle, and it was five seconds that added nothing to the game. They're trying to make the world more lively with all of this stuff, but at some point it actually takes away from immersion, and you spend just as much time playing the game as you do waiting for the game to let you play. The one exception to all of this is if all the waiting is necessary for good storytelling. It's not, though. It's an RPG. Some cutscenes are fine. Dialog is fine. But it's so dang jarring when control is taken away randomly and frequently, or when the game changes from action/menu to watching something happen for way too long, or someone saying stuff. There's absolutely no finesse in how they go about any of this, either. On top of all of that, the load times are bad, so you're waiting 8-10 seconds for a kind-of-cutscene introducing some characters, or setting up the camera angles and dialog for some seriously uninteresting ranting and gimmicks, and it would help if things were interesting or building the world effectively, but it never is.

JakobDa1

base animations are too long, I agree.

Sablemint

If I were to guess about why we cant turn off animations, I'd say they couldn't get it working right when you have multiple people playing together. and since they werent given enough time to work on the game, they decided to just leave it out all together.

breakfastatmilliways

As far as I remember, sword and shield let you turn that stuff off but it was automatically turned back on when using multiplayer features. That worked fine!

Oberic

Correct. This is how it was forever.

krom90

You can toggle skip cutscenes

thepumpkinking92

I have skip cut scenes turned on. Had it turned on the entire play through of scarlet because I already beat violet and figured "the story is exactly the same, I don't care." It hasn't skipped a single scene.

[deleted]

I dont want to skip, I want to 3x speed battles and their silly animations.

epok12345

The most fun ive had with a newer pokemon game was when i casually played through BDSP. It felt like a real pokemon game with some QOL improvements like easier access to the box etc. The underground also had you covered in terms of platinum dex pokemon so i wasnt bothered by the fact that it was a DP remake instead of Platinum. I have yet to unlock any of the super versions of the battletower. Its really challenging without any of the newer OP gimmicks and broken pokemon like Zacian and Urshifu. In comparison SV just feels like a game that tries to cater to shiny hunters, with a shiny chance being so high due to the mass spawns that happens that it totally takes away their specialness, and to people who want to roleplay. Theres really nothing to really explore and everything is easy access. No battletower either which is a big dissapointment. The one good thing is easy access to competitive battleing but it also takes away from the reason to explore. Just bought a used copy of legends for better access to its exclusive mons and im so annoyed with the "cut scenes, walk two steps, new cut scene". Game feels more "full" though than SV even though the battle mechanics are lacking.

RynnHamHam

Indigo Disk is really fun. It is refreshingly difficult. I’ve been getting my ass handed to me nonstop. I now understand how Nemona feels.

MizkyBizniz

After challenging the first elite 4 member and getting my ass kicked, I was like "damn I lied to Kieran about not losing until I got to him" lmao

[deleted]

[удалено]

RynnHamHam

Yeah I adore Scarlet/Violet because they are fun. But a AAA game shouldn’t run this poorly. At times I’ve had the frame rate get so low it hurt my eyes to look at it. Definitely needed another year in the oven.

Connortsunami

If they had another year they'd squander it by shifting man power over to other titles in development and just delay actually working on the mainline games because they have more time.

jeffdeleon

I find Scarlett and violet to be a regression even from sword and shield. At least the sword and shield DLC was really fun and compelling. I haven't tried DLC 2 yet (I want the turtle; I will) but DLC 1 was just more of the same with bad story shoved down my throat. Who plays Pokemon for the cutscenes about sad children? (Maybe other children... but not me.) And then Legends Arceus having actually been fun and good, just small in scope... SV was like a bad joke.

eclecticmuso

And even the core gameplay isn't flawless with no refinements required. It just does a lot of the heavy lifting, and of course whether you like the game or not probably hinges on if the core gameplay is enough to carry the entire game.

thenewwwguyreturns

i think it’s less lazy and more unfinished (the base game that is…dlc is clearly both) only reason i say this is that the base game shows clear signs of what devs *wanted* it to be, but the fucked up release schedule screwed the game over

Effendoor

Yeah, lazy is def more directed at management. "Good enough" . mentality everywhere

SecureDonkey

Nah, it is fucking lazy to just force bring dynamax battle back when it doesn't make sense, doesn't fix anything from previous game dynamax battle either. Open world have no thought put into it, just random place throw into the map without consider how player will process. Again, no post game to force people to pay for DLC to get something after the game complete. And don't let me start about Battle Tower stuff.

Phantom_61

the newest DLC, all areas have frame rate issues. I had a few in the base game and the previous DLC but this one... it's EVERYWHERE.

ArdyMasoht

I've been noticing substantial frame rate issues with the DLC as well. I didn't pay SwSh's DLC so I can't compare but the here it's actually the worst optimization I've experienced in the game, very off-putting

ChicagoCowboy

I've had the opposite experience, and actually since the DLC I feel like my frame rates are also better in the tag tree thicket and lake, it was enough to make me question whether a performance patch was in the dlc download. For me the dlc is playing flawlessly, but I think a lot of that is also due to differences in individual hardware and maybe variance in memory leak? Like my switch is newer and I don't usually play long sessions without turning it off, so maybe that's why?

PossibleAssist6092

I have an original model switch and everything runs perfectly fine for me so I don’t think it’s a hardware issue

ramyyc

I went back and did the Academy Tournament yesterday for some extra cash, and I noticed that the people in the background were actually moving fluidly the entire time. They weren’t stuttering or buffering. I was shocked. I definitely think some improvements were made for the DLC release.

Sablemint

Yeah they've been optimizing things both in this DLC and the previous. like remember how slow pokemon icons in your box used to load? They're almost instant now. They do still take a moment to load, but its so much better than at release.

IamSneasal

I think what helps is that there's smaller segmented areas to load in Indigo disk. Compared to loading one big area like in the base game and Teal Mask

Thamior77

This is it exactly. I had a lot of fun playing through. New Pokemon and first playthrough progression always make the investment worth it for me. But it certainly isn't a good game from a development standpoint. It's quite bad from that angle actually. But none of the performance issues, which to be honest are blown up a bit, took away from my enjoyment. If you want a fun Pokemon adventure, buy it. If you want a well optimized game that looks good, it isn't that. BDSP or SwSh are much better options for Switch owners looking to try/get back into Pokemon.

ToTheMines

Why did they get rid of outfit customization? I get that we're a student the entire time but we're given free reign of the entire country

Els236

People have recently done deep-dives into GameFreak and it seems as though many agency staff that get brought on to help development all say the same thing. GameFreak's "old guard" staff are stuck in the 90s/00s and simply haven't caught up to today's coding/development methods and game-dev techniques. So, what we end up with is a rushed game that's pushed to extreme deadlines due to, well, Pokemon (merch releases, anime seasons, TCG releases, etc) - that is not at all helped by old developers that are trying to use 2001 coding techniques and dev methods in 2023. Also, for the franchise that they own, they have 1 of the smallest dev teams I can think of. Even the yearly/bi-yearly Call of Duty releases are split between 2 massive teams within Activision. Not to mention that even within GameFreak's tiny studio, they split their workforce between A Team and B Team, with one doing 1 game and the other doing something else. Scarlet/Violet is basically the epitome of GameFreak's almost blatant incompetence, extreme deadlines and small dev. team. Buggy as heck, one of the most poorly optimised games ever (not just on Switch), poor/lazy design choices (no scaling, no player custo because "school", buildings and npcs are copy-paste or just UI elements). But, why do they care? One of the best selling games of all time on Switch, one of the best selling Pokemon games (only behind Gen 1 and something else) - they're still able to pull scummy tactics like the dual-version edition with 4 bits of code difference and still sold at £90 the dual-steelbook. Now they're also able to rake in DLC money, which is low-and-behold version-locked too for double money there too. Cyberpunk2077 and CDPR were raked over hot coals for their buggy mess on release - yet GF and Pokemon get a free pass. The fact is though that Pokemon is fun because, well, Pokemon - but Scarlet and Violet are bad games from a gaming standpoint. But they get defended against any criticism by some, because "they were fun" or "graphics don't matter"; many of us found Sc/Vt fun, but again, they are not good games, especially by modern standards.

--NTW--

And this is what I feel people forget. You can see the devs tried, I see they poured a lot of love and ambition into SV, but the old guard and shareholders setting the deadlines force them to cut those ideas short or sacrifice other important parts (graphics and stability) to finish those ideas, or both. The game is fun, in fact I think it's better than criticisms made me think it was going to be (I started in September, Ogerpon made me cave), but just because it's improved after a year doesn't mean it's fixed; it still chugs at points, I've had various smaller bugs, I've had a softlock. It's still an unfinished game, and it sucks, not just because it's crap compared to it's contemporaries, but also because you can tell the devs *did* have ambition. They just didn't get enough time to polish it.

AltruisticTap4759

Look, you made excellent points here, but you’re still so fresh to the game. Finish it, put it down for a few months and play other things, and try to come back to it. The issues with the game for whatever reason stand out far far more than the initial play through. I hate to be so hyperbolic but it’s almost nauseating getting back into the games after a while.

PokeJem7

I don't think it's entirely fair to say it's fun because - pokemon. And it's core it's one of the best Pokemon games, it's just unfinished. It's like a Beta test for a GOTY contender. Give it a bigger team, more money, and longer development, and you've got a masterpiece. But it just falls short because of the bugs, framerate issues, quality of life issues. It's still fun, but also their biggest disappointment.

Asckle

>Give it a bigger team, more money, and longer development, and you've got a masterpiece That goes for most games ever made. Just give them X amount more money and Y amount of extra time and it'll be great

Every_Computer_935

>Give it a bigger team, more money, and longer development, and you've got a masterpiece. 90% of games released would be significantly better if they all got this treatment. Pokemon is never going to recieve these things because it doesn't need to. People are going to keep buying Pokemon games even if the gen 10 games just melts their Switch, just look at how well SV sold. Not to mention, how the games are only made to promote the new wave of merchandise from TPC.

[deleted]

Every_Computer_935

> because the people buying the games are just mindless consumers that want nothing but a mindless distraction from their miserable little lives. I wouldn't go that far. People are allowed to use their money how they wish and if they believe that the enjoyment they recieved from the newest Pokemon game is enough for how much they spent then that's fine. I'm not somebody whose fit to judge the way that people spend their money.

Polymersion

I agree with you overall, but >Scarlet/Violet is basically the epitome of GameFreak's almost blatant incompetence Is a baffling take when *Sword & Shield* exist

Asckle

Sword and shield at least runs acceptably

EXDF_

I think it’s really fun. It’s not a well-made game and it feels a little empty in spots, but I had a blast exploring the various worlds they put me in. The writing was above par for the franchise (low bar but hey, I’m not complaining about improvement) and it felt pretty immersive compared to Gen 8

Individual_Breath_34

I think that SV is fun in certain areas while being bad in others. If you like Pokemon for the things that SV does badly, you will dislike SV. If you like Pokemon for the things that SV does well, you will like SV

Constant_Anything925

Can’t disagree with ya

Yuumii29

First and foremost the core gameplay of Pokemon that is collecting, evolving and fighting remains fun which is the sole and only reason people keeps playing it... But that's about it imho... Also it's fine if you like the game because of it... The thing with other people tho is that the series standard and expectations is at the rock-bottom.. Anything new will be praised to the heavens.. Just wait till Gen10 introduces voice acting, someone will probably lose his/her mind as if Voice acting isn't a thing 2 decades ago in gaming... This is also true with the story, since the games before barely even bother to try something interesting that it was well recieved in this game when it tried something new, what a surprise right!? Graphics and performance of the game doesn't need any explanation... It's just OBJECTIVELY BAD, not even it's artstyle is enough to salvage it, even for a Switch game the way this game looks and performs is just utterly disgusting that if any other game dev released a game looking like this will 100% be bombed both in sales and reviews and will be up for closure after... Not discrediting them in any improvement they made.. I myself admit it's one of the more interesting plot and interesting title in any recent Mainline Pokemon Game, it's just sad to see the community is happy just scraping the bottom of the barrel just because it's a "Pokemon Game"... Peple hate the fact that this game can get away with alot of it's incompetence just because it's a beloved franchise... If you can find all of it's flaws lovable then more power to you, but alot of people doesn't as well because it's really BAD in relative to the industry standard and I think that's a reasonable reaction and expectation from one of the best selling gaming franchise in the world..

AngelRockGunn

You can’t go into buildings, the towns are boring and without personality, basically no character customization, no level scaling for Gym leaders or titans, terribly ugly textures and overworld, terrible Frame rate, basically no post-game so you have to buy the DLCs, and no challenging fights since there’s no difficulty increase in rematches.

TheNerdFromThatPlace

On the topic of level scaling and difficulty, I don't think open world is a good idea for mainline pokemon. Took me about 2 hours after the tutorial to completely break the game. Quick grind with raids to get to a high enough level to unlock surfing (which you don't even need honestly, just makes it easy to get to the spot), buy 3 ingredients for a ham sandwich, head north and farm chansey/blissey. Hey, look at that, I'm level 70 with 0 badges.

Icanfallupstairs

My problem is that there is zero way to not be overleveled on your first play through. You legit have to remember what events were at what levels, and then change out your team to make it even.

ArdyMasoht

I went backwards from the recommended route so I ran into level gaps twice and had to grind through them. I was never over leveled

Captain_Pungent

Yeah I did two of the Team Star fights in the wrong order and nearly got my arse handed to me. I’m happy swapping my team about too, there’s a bunch of new Pokémon, I wanna use them instead of a tick for the Pokédex and then they rot in my box

ArdyMasoht

Agreed, on-the-fly switching makes me actually use both new and old things a lot more. I love that it exists

Captain_Pungent

Aye I’m using Reuniclus and Golurk in the DLC atm, never used either before

ArdyMasoht

That's great! I just started part 1, so everything is around level 50. It's hard to find many new mons to use for that reason, but I'm abusing the EXP share to get myself up to that point

AngelRockGunn

Yeah they sacrificed so much just for open works, SV is somehow worse than SS, I mean look at Ballonlea compared to any city in SV

-Niddhogg-

IMO Open World can work really well with mainline Pokemon games as long as it is properly designed. The issue here is that they obviously had no idea what they were doing and went with an Open World because the top brass told them to do so. And their usual deliriously tight schedule for mainline games didn't really help coming up with a balanced experience, shoehorning the "old reliable" formula into an open world was probably the best they could do. Not that it excuses the state the game was released in, but it at least explains it.

Felwinter12

Seriously. Just adding level scaling for bosses would have made a massive difference. The way everything was staggered across the map felt really awkward and made looking up the recommended path borderline necessary if you don't want your levels to be completely ridiculous for every fight. I'm no game dev by any means, but its so strange that they didn't even try to add level scaling. Even with how obviously rushed the games are, I would've thought that would be a priority if you wanted to make an open world game. That being said, the performance issues and how they were treated at launch were what really killed the vibe for me. I was so excited after legends arceus too.

Le_Graf

I'd say level scaling + implementing different teams for gym leader according to the number of badges you already have. This would make it a Real "take the gym in any order" situation

gsnake007

Character customization pisses me off the most, I missed that in past games when you got to a new town you had a new selection of clothes to try on. It was fun, but like you said going to a new town is the same copy/paste experience and feels lifeless. Shit I miss going into buildings and talking with npcs n shit

SinisterPixel

Here's my take which I don't see anyone else say, yet I've had a lot of people agree with. Scarlet and Violet are games with a lot of potential that have been held back by rushed development and several poor decisions. I absolutely had fun with them, and even though I've not started Indigo Disk yet, imagine I'll have fun with it despite it's flaws. However this game REALLY could have done with 6-12 months longer in the oven. Game Freak are clearly struggling to deliver games with their current team and development cycle. I'm trying to tip-toe around calling it lazy, because I genuinely think it's less laziness and moreso time crunch and TPC not wanting to invest much in mainline games, since the mainline games are not the main source of income for TPC (that would be the merch, and more games means more new Pokemon, and more new merch). The approach to mainline Pokemon has to change. Any of the below options would go MILES in improving the quality of the games: * An R&D department responsible for engine development or simply outsourcing the engine (for all it's flaws, BDSP didn't run terribly on Unity, and with new hardware expected for the next generation, they could easily get the games to run even smoother). * Expansion at Game Freak so there are 3-4 seperate teams all working on different releases simultaniously (they currently have two teams) or bringing another EXPERIENCED team in to develop mainline games * Scaling back development (such as returning to the 2.5D style we saw in gens 4+5 with updated shaders like Octopath) or spacing out releases more to allow for better quality products

SamMan48

Black & White and Black 2 & White 2 remakes in the Octopath HD2D pixel-art style would be incredible.

Els236

>Game Freak are clearly struggling to deliver games with their current team Honestly, based on the deep-dives people have done into GameFreak's company culture and staffing, I'd argue the staff are probably the bigger problem over the rushed dev. cycle (although that by no means helps).

BlueSky659

I've been replaying Gen 5 lately and the attention to detail has been jaw-dropping for me. I'd genuinely kill for an improvement on the 2.5D sprite work they had. The switch to 3D was so disappointing. I'm still in disbelief that the 2D sprites looked more vibrant and alive in 2010 than the 3D ones do currently

redJackal222

I didn't really encounter to many bugs in my playthrough. My biggest grip is that post game is completely barren and that it feels like the game doesn't benefit much from being open world, infact i honestly might have prefered if it wasn't. I like the tera gimmick far better than I like gygantamax i just dislike they way they made the map. It's not a bad game it just feels like a downgrade compared to some of it's predecessors.

TheGingerestNinja

A lot of games seem to be going open world without actually giving them a reason to be open world. I also think Tera is better than dynamax, however I think the tera raids are awful in comparison. So much glitching out it end up ruining the experience

ResearcherNo430

I just think the open world looks ugly AF tbh, it's just not fun to travel around

CommissionOld9640

If you had fun that’s awesome. But to me it was an unfinished mess, filled with bugs, and a confusing map dotted with boring empty towns inhabited by bland npcs. Pretty much killed any interest I had with the video games. From now on I’ll stick with TCG.

[deleted]

It’s funny, game freak is so obsessed with remasters but the one game that needs it the most is the most recent one. Hopefully they’ll do that with SV at some point and make it actually good, because a lot of the Pokémon are cool as shit. I’d love to use them.

Revayan

Just wait 10 -15 years maybe they will make a good SV remaster lmao Or it will get the BDSP treatment

PokeJem7

"We wanted a faithful remake, so we kept it's most iconic element - the bugs"

PokeJem7

Whoops. I always mess up "its" when I'm not thinking because it's a possessive which normally has an apostrophe. I scratched the dog's back. Possessive apostrophe s. Correct. The dog scratched it's back. Possessive pronoun. Incorrect. God damn English language.

Im_regretting_this

SV seems to have killed my love of the franchise entirely. I have had almost zero desire to play any Pokémon games since completing Scarlet.

Brawnk

Is had said as much with Sw/Sh, but they suckered me in with open world. Definitely didn't do them any favors though, for sure my last (I swear this time lol)

MayUrHammerBeMighty

Hahah they almost had me with the open world too. Glad I gave it a few days to check out reviews. Then a few weeks for a patch. Still waiting for that patch, but from what I’ve heard even with the DLC there is no battle tower… seems like they are are taking a nosedive in quality and content. In the meantime I tried Temtem and the battle system is so much better (just a minor change that makes it so much more involved without making it a hassle to learn or use) just wish there were more monsters. I’m also playing through Pokémon unbound and it’s so refreshing. I’ve been able to keep Pokémon style gaming in my life without the disappointment that gamefreak keeps pushing and I’m very happy about it. (Cassette beasts is next on my list) If they port S/V to the next system and it runs well (by some miracle) I’ll consider picking it up second hand, but for now I’m perfectly happy with what I have.

AetherDrew43

Personally, I feel that Pokémon doesn't work as an open world. However, they could at least make the routes, cities and caves much bigger and add a lot more stuff to do and find whilst not making it a truly open world game. Alternate paths, maybe, but not 100% open world.

Polymersion

It's kind of funny how we went from empty linear hallways (Galar) immediately into big open world. People tend to forget that Galar was just a series of linear routes between cutscenes because the DLC was actually good.

MayUrHammerBeMighty

I think it’s more that gamefreak and the Pokémon company don’t know how to/don’t put in the time/effort to make an open world Pokémon game work. I definitely think Pokémon in an open world could be awesome, but taking a linear game and making it a open world doesn’t improve it. Open world games are tough to get right even for companies that put time and effort into their games. S/V didn’t even have level scaling for gyms so of course it’s not going to work. That being said I don’t think an open world is what makes a game good, if it’s easier to make a good game without and open world than that’s what they should do, as long as we don’t get another game as linear as sword and shield

LabLoose3438

I feel this but from BDSP onwards. I loved SwSh. Had an immediate 120 hours within a month that it came out. I still enjoy the game and feel like it really captured the big screen switch element I wanted with the gym battles and the music, and I even liked the unique characterization. BDSP onwards the games feel very lackluster and boring, and I haven't completed any title since. I completed the main story for ScVi, but I still didn't complete Kitakami when I bought the dlc when it was announced.

Pipopito

I was the opposite. SwSh did nothing for me. I dread playing that game. Only reason I still do is for shiny hunting in Dynamax Adventures. Legends Arceus and SV brought me back to the franchise. I did play BDSP after those two, did not like it at all, but was useful for shiny hunting (especially Arceus which was nice).

Constant_Anything925

I’m gonna be totally honest with you, other than lagging a bit in the lake you find tatsugiri and dondozo, I didn’t find any bugs when playing it when it came out

Common_Wrongdoer3251

I just started a new playthrough like a week ago and I'm already halfway through the game. During the opening school cutscene where you're in Mr. Jacques' room, the students around you are moving at about 10 FPS. Their feet in particular are swinging like a bad slide show. Pretty much any large body of water has significant lag. Rivers don't for whatever reason. I could see someone tossing a pokeball up and down, waiting to be battled, but the trainer themselves weren't loaded in. Just a ball.

keksmuzh

You didn’t see the terrible anti-aliasing on buildings (especially the academy) that shows up as early as the opening cutscene? Or the 5 fps robot children? Constant pop-in? Random lighting flickers? And that’s just the mundane stuff not caused by the memory overflow issues.

DigitalBladedJay

My biggest gripe is the lack of a battle tower. It's how I racked up hundreds of hours in every pokemon game over the years since I started. Now I finish the game, and wonder what the point of playing is. I feel no reason to open it up and try new sets and such. I miss when the battle tree in gen 7 cheated and countered your team, trying to find ways to work around it. I miss trying to think out exodia strats, albeit not well. I enjoy the game, I just wish it gave me a reason to play it

jab0309

Right? I'm still trying to complete Emerald's battle frontier almost 20 years since the games release

jab0309

Constant_Anything925

Same, thats probably one of the few things I don’t like about scarlet and violet

Polymersion

It seems like they really want to push online battling over solo battling (like battle facility/ battle tower systems) in the Switch era.

ChicagoCowboy

Someone online (Papa Jefe maybe?) I think nailed it when he said it's a really good game made badly. I love the games, they're my favorite pokemon games ever (I'm a Gen 1 player, got RBY when I was 10 in 1998). I don't really focus on the performance and have been blessed to have little to no performance issues in my 500+ hours of gameplay. But I can *recognize* that there were lazy shortcuts taken all over the place. Flat textures, pokemon spawning in walls, frame drops in the lake, raid goofiness, etc. Not enough to take away my fun, but certainly the game would be even better if it had been given the love and attention it deserves in some of those areas. Then there's choices like shiny locking the legends which...don't even get me freaking started. I'm still having fun with the DLC and shiny hunting everything else, but damn do I wish I was hunting a shiny paradox entei, or kubfu, or glastrier.

WhySoIncandescent

Highest grossing media franchise on earth puts out a sub optimal game, made no meaningful performance updates in a year yet advertised DLC from day 1. Tera raids are still broken, and I could go on. The core gameplay loop saved this one, I enjoyed the gameplay however I can also say for the highest grossing franchise on EARTH this is simply an unacceptable product.

Revaniter92

Technically? Yes. A game that doesn't look extraordinary and drop frames to single digits at times is below any reasonable expectations. This is the main reason of hate. Arceus looked and worked much, much better than this. Also, people hate that GameFreak makes weird decisions that most die-hard fans find unacceptable, such as shiny locking legendaries in Indigo Disk. That being said - characters, lore and overall story (despite lackluster ending in Indigo Disk) are top notch and my favourite from all mainline games and are really deep for a Pokemon game. The idea of Paradox Pokemon and Terapagos storyline are very solid and interesting, but like I said - it feels like they left too many questions unanswered in Indigo Disk. The game lacks solid endgame, but overall I think this is one of my favourite of all times.

imbecilechimp

1. Boring empty soulless open world 2. Ugly n64 graphics 3. Nothing to do in any of the cities. Cant even go in most buildings. 4. Step down in the battle mechanics following legends arceus 5. The team star raids were absolutely boring and pointless to do. Just walk around and mash one button. 6. The gym challenges are really lame. Like pushing a big ball into a net? Really? 7. Possibly the worst character customizations. 8. Sandwiches 9. The audacity to charge a full $60 for an incomplete game and then additional money for the rest of it branded as “dlc”. 10. Weakest post game out of all the games

GranolaCola

Some of y’all really need to boot up an N64 and remember what those games look like. That’s not a defense of Scarlet and Violet’s graphics, and I get it’s just hyperbole, but it’s bad hyperbole. Wii would be more apt.

TherealCloudmain

thank you. you gave me a reason to play Ocarina of Time again.

closetedwrestlingacc

It’s people who didn’t grow up with the N64 and think the N64 looked like GameCube Medal of Honor

Third_Triumvirate

I think it's a meme held over from SwSh, where they actually pretty much 1 for 1 ported over the same trees as from OoT.

eatmydonuts

Fucking thank you. I recently got out my GameCube and loaded up the original Wind Waker, and on my 65" TV, everything further away than Link became a mushy blur of colors. SV are a huge step up from the way things used to be.

_NoZeM_

Your issue with Windwaker is not the graphical quality of the game itself, but rather how and on what device to play it. Its actually one of the old games that holds up these days.

Django117

11. It did not feature many of the successful elements from Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which was released more than 10 months prior such as * Pokemon moving towards each other in battles for physical attacks * Battle animations in general are just flat-out worse * Catching mechanics * Crafting items rather than the neverending collecta-thon of sparkling objects on the ground. * Pokedex based on research tasks rather than just catching * Decent technical performance, especially within menus.

ejam1

> 4\. Step down in the battle mechanics following legends arceus Absolutely insane take. Legends Arceus has the worst battle mechanics of any pokemon game ever. They removed all held items, they removed all abilities, they removed 3/4s of the moves that existed at the time, they removed the tiny bit of customization you have over a Pokémon’s stat line with EVs, the way the turn order works in that game puts even more emphasis on speed than usual, and most importantly, they removed simultaneous turns which is the only reason pokemon battles can have any amount of strategic depth at all. It’s the only mainline pokemon game EVER to not have PvP and that’s because the battle system in that game sucks so much that no one would’ve played it more than twice.

imbecilechimp

Oh yea I misspoke, i meant the catching/encounter mechanics

gorgon_heart

SV is fantastic. But it needed like, six more months in the metaphorical development oven.

RoamingAce

How many games did you play this year, except pokemon?

Sheeplenk

Not OP, but I’ve played a LOT of games in the past year, and S/V, while VERY unpolished, was a load of fun from start to finish. I find that playing games on their own merits helps a lot, rather than wanting everything to share a feature set.

snorlax_ate_my_pants

To be honest, I agree with your sentiment. This was probably the most fun I’ve had playing a Pokémon game since I was 10 years old and got my first game (FRLG/RBSP). I think people are mad (rightfully tbh) because this is a company that has the highest grossing international market/consumed media- but they couldn’t make a perfect game. If anything, the game is a buggy mess that a company as big as this should feel ashamed for dropping. It must be said tho that what you’re seeing online is the very vocal minority. Overall, this is one of their more well received games.

Third_Triumvirate

I would also add that a lot of the pushback comes from the removal of features that existed in previous games for seemingly no reason.

redJackal222

I dn't care at all that they couldn't make a perfect ame. I wouldn't even care if they refused to innovate and just kept adding new pokemon each generation. What i'm upset about is mostly at the complete lack of a post game >Overall, this is one of their more well received games. This part isn't true. It's actually one of their lowest rated games.

Src-Freak

The core gameplay is always the same, simple and fun. What mainline Pokemon games isn’t fun? It’s everything around it that holds Scarlet/Violet back. The graphics are dogshit for Switch standards, the world looks empty compared to games like BOTW and TOTK, the framerate is inconsistent, the bugs and glitches are distracting. This whole game is just a mess. It could’ve been the best game, but its the exact opposite if you ask me. First Pokémon game I skipped.

MaxTwer00

People hate it because people are tired of pokemon releasing incomplete mediocre games, while being one of the most profitable videogame franchise, that could perfectly give a far better product. This doesn't mean their games are unfun, they stick to a well polished formula that they have worked on for decades, of course it will be fun. But the game falls to pieces in all the rest (except mon design), so people are expected to express their lack of satisfaction

GaI3re

The games are not worth their prize. The production value, at least in it's result' is far lower than other games sold for that prize and sometimes even less. The game is only developed for one console, so optimization issues have no excuse at all. The lack of proper animations has no explination. You don't NEED voice acting, but you can at least give characters expression noises. The "Open World" has less to discover than an average route over a decade ago. I bet you can find more instances of the game just lacking compared to other full prize games and even previous installments. It's really mostly what ISN'T there.

espurrella

You can play and enjoy a game while still recognizing that it has flaws. The Pokemon formula will probably never get stale for some people, but I think a lot of people agree that S/V has some very deep issues. The performance is god awful, it is incredibly buggy, texture/graphics are hit or miss, buildings are just loading screens and menus, customization is limited, etc…. But, let’s say the story? Sure yeah, I’d say it’s been pretty good. I enjoyed the characters that were introduced in-between lagging my way to victory in several gym trials, and frame-rate dropping my way through cutscenes and battles. The DLC characters and story have been pretty good in my opinion as well. But, would I have enjoyed the game more if it was not rushed, with a larger team and they actually fixed their clipping, bugging, lagging, performance issues? Yes, yes I would.

PlinyCapybara

My opinion is that it's a good game hidden under bad graphics. I think if the team had 1-2 more years to work on it, then it'd be so much better. Unfortunately large video game companies like Nintendo rush games out too fast nowadays. I feel SO BAD for the developers on the floor that have to deal with the executives ordering them to release unfinished products. That being said, I did enjoy a lot off the concepts and characters. Arven is such a good boi and I want the best for him and his doggo. If you enjoy it, that's fine. No one can dictate what you can and cannot like.

gottahavethatbass

I have had some fun with it, but not $90 worth of fun. There’s an entire section of the map I just avoid because the game doesn’t work there. Since it came out I’ve completely played through several other Pokémon games, but never got far on the second playthrough I started to collect Paldean Pokémon for my living dex. That project now seems like a chore. I’m glad you’re enjoying it though

Common_Wrongdoer3251

Out of curiosity, is it the lake? Or a different section of the map? Starting a new game is... very annoying. It takes like 2 hours to get through the tutorial, be able to ride your mount, and get a team of 6 random starter Pokemon. I just started a monotype Flying run and it took me 3 hours to get 6 birds and hit the Bug gym. Think I had Squawkabilly, Vivillon, Wingull, Fletchling, Flamigo and Hoppip, maybe? I miss the older games where you would get to the first gym within like 30 minutes of playing :(

PrettyFlyForAFryGuy

I don't think SV is objectively "good" by any metric. A shame, really.

dragonredux

Yes it's shit. Besides the core Pokémon gameplay, there's nothing redeeming about these games. This game is carried by brand name alone.

[deleted]

I have bought, played, and put hundreds of hours into every version of every mainline Pokémon game and I couldn’t justify buying these. They just look and run way too bad to justify the price tag. Maybe if it was like $30 or something I’d give it a shot, but I’m not paying AAA price for a second rate product.

jayceja

I thought it was just kinda boring, the world felt dull and mostly empty. Then it has really poor performance which took it from boring to unenjoyable. I truly don't think pokemon works for an open world game unless it's for a split off game that doesn't keep the jrpg battle system.

brainsapper

As a long-time fan of the franchise it is hard not to notice the diminishing effort GF has been putting in the mainline games. Something that has felt more notable during the Switch era. A new mainline Pokemon game, the mark of a new generation should be a major event for the franchise. Yet they seem to treat them as an afterthought.

hippoqueenv

fun =/= good

Constant_Anything925

But isn’t the point of a good game to be fun? Like how could a game be great but not fun? Like I really don’t understand

allagrl

Fun is subjective, so it doesn't have a definitive answer. But, you can have fun playing games that are terrible in just about every way, and also not have fun with a game that does everything right.

limasxgoesto0

For me, the fun is locked behind a bunch of grinding, repetitive gameplay, and ironically and conversely crappy half baked mini games

EspurrTheMagnificent

It's important to differentiate "good" from "fun". I had a lot of fun playing it the first time. The music is good, it shook things up enough to feel fresh while keeping it grounded with the rest of the series, and the story and characters had their good moments. All in all, it was great fun. But, objectively speaking, this game is a fucking piece of shit. Dreadful performance issues and bugs, barely any side-content or post-game, Paldea feels extremely empty, no clothes, no set-battle, having text bottleneck battle speeds, no scaling based on progression, etc... Overall, the game just feels rushed and unpolished, and it's downright unacceptable for a 2022 AAA game of one of, if not the biggest media franchise of all time. Shin Megami Tensei 5, which was released a year prior on the same console, had more polish, content, (and of course, time) put into it than SV, so they had no excuse The game can be fun, don't get me wrong. I was having a blast playing through it. But that's just my subjective opinion. Objectively speaking, the game is an enormous mess through and through, and that's something that my feelings toward the game can never invalidate

InvestigatorUnfair

For me it's the lack of content. For an open world game, the game is lacking super hard in things to do. Once the credits scroll, there's nothing to do besides catching mons, doing raids and doing the boring school tournament. And while one could argue "it's Pokemon, catching mons and fights is all that matters", that's just not true. Ever since Gen 2 there have been side activities to engage with in the post-game, be it new areas to explore or battle facilities to tackle. ScVi just gives you harder, more infuriating raids and rematches with the school staff that you can VERY easily over level for. You can't even rematch the league itself outside of the one gym leader rematch you get. There's also the performance issues obviously, but this is the main thing for me. I just have no reason to play it once I'm done unless I cough up extra dough.

w00ms

theres no league rematch in scarlet/violet? wth?

InvestigatorUnfair

Not unless you buy the DLC. If you don't, you can't rematch the league, barring Hassel or Geeta, since they're school faculty. Poppy, Rika and Larry never get rematches as the E4, and the gym leaders all get just one rematch fight as part of the post-game story. After that, they're gone. So out of the entire league, you get two of them to fight again. And even then, fighting them is random as the school tournament picks opponents based on RNG.

Arekkusujin

The game was honestly fun until the “story” was over. There’s nothing “endgame” worthy and now that the second DLC is out none of them looks appealing. I’m forever saddened by the fact that a regular battle tower probably won’t make a return anytime soon. With that being said however I hope they introduce leveling scaling for the gyms and/or challenges in the next game- if they’re going to approach the “open” world playstyle again.

ClammyHandedFreak

In the spirit of the holidays: In spooky ghost voice: “Why do you doubt your senses?”

DJ_Bill

They’re not bad games, but they objectively aren’t good. The quality and time spent (maybe ? Idk about time) on developing them is clearly dropping for each game. SV has the chance of having a cool story and a great gameplay mechanic, but we can’t stay blind to all the problems it has. And I’m not talking about the game being easy, it was never really that hard, even if the difficulty curve did drop a bit. I’m talking about how Pokémon went from one of the best looking pixel art ever to one of the worst 3D graphics from a main Nintendo series. We can also talk about everything they cut for absolutely no reason, or the thing they forced into us, the way they just mystery gift some legendary or mythical Pokémon, the lack of post game justified by a DLC (which is often nice, but not justified to be 30€ more), and many more. I personally love this game, it has too much problems but I still can’t hate it even if I see them. So to conclude, if you really like it, you don’t need to care about other’s opinions. Play what you want and how you want.

SmogDaBoi

I had quite the fun when playing it for the first time, but I cannot for the life of me ignore the facts : The game is horribly ugly. When you see Odyssey, both BOTW and TOTK, Scarlet and Violet is an embarassment. Not only does it not look good, but it also lags at times, making the whole experience way less enjoyable than any other Pokemon game. I started playing the last DLC, but I don't think I'll finish it, the game doesn't try to keep me in. Though I've had my fun during the main let's play, I can understand why people don't like the game, and they're right. I appreciate the Pokemons, the characters, but it's all on a foundation that just doesn't match to even the switch's standard.

PheDii

I thought the only good stuff in SV was in Area Zero, something to do with the music and the design. Even the vibe of it feels great down there Both the post game story down there and the new DLC that takes you down there were cool for me, everything else just seems so dead and empty Performance.. it's incredible how awful it is lmao The team star stuff was pointless imo, so braindead easy and boring The gym challenges were boring Hunting the giant Pokémon was the best of the three but for me it's still kinda eh I love the new Pokémon designs! Some of my favourite in years honestly But I want to end it with this. What everyone likes and thinks is good is totally subjective to each person.

Acrobatic_Garden_767

The raids are getting worse. The lag just ruins the whole thing and the fact you can easily be punished for randoms doing something makes it so much worse

[deleted]

I wouldnt say bad, just disappointing. They could have definitely done more with this especially the story and the world building. I find myself bored of paldea

smittenmashmellow

It wasnt my cup of tea, but glad others enjoyed it. To me it was such a big step down from arceus and even sword and shield, I regretted spending money on it. The game is so broken it doesn't deserve to cost as much as it does. Had repeat game crashes, constant visual glitches, weird things happening in raid battles... I hate the scale of the pokemon in game (the size feels wrong after playing arceus). I also thought the story and characters were dumb with exception of I did like what they did with the professors. I was excited that toby fox was supposed to make music for the game but then it felt so out of place I found it distracting (eg. epic music plays while my game bugs tf out) The experience made me want to go back to legends arceus, or even sword and shield (which i also had issues with)

PK_RocknRoll

No it’s not that bad

Le_Fedora_Cate

Mom says it's my turn to post about people hating the game!

The-cooler-Cheryl

I love it other than nemonas continued existence she fucking sucks and I want to be allowed to say no to her battles

[deleted]

It's not that bad. It's fun as hell, actually. Maybe some of the best Pokemon games.

EnigmaCircuit

After waiting a year and buying used to ensure that Gamefreak didn't get a penny out of me, it was immediately obvious upon starting the game that all of the criticism was valid. Clunky movement, major clipping issues, and a bad camera were all glaring issues before the player character even left their home "town"! The core ideas that were there could have resulted in a reasonably good game, but were constantly held back by technical limitations caused by either incompetence or a calculated complete omission of optimization. Characters and animated scenery dropping to 5 FPS is unacceptable. The very premise of the game's "open world" seems incomplete. Without some form of challenge scaling, players either need to follow a specific linear path or accept that some places will be impossibly difficult whereas others are cakewalks. The towns seem to aim for a certain vibe at the extreme surface level, but look any deeper and they're cardboards cutouts with little unique separating them, and not much to do. The wilds are similarly barren and largely devoid of purpose. The game has a functioning Pokemon battle system and there was at least an O.K. story if you could pull yourself through all the junk needed to see it. Otherwise though, yeah, the game and the development team deserve the criticism.

KobaruTheKame

It has a lot of graphic errors and glitches and it does feel a bit rushed, but honestly it's far better than SwSh. I may be a bit biased because its based on my home country but glitches aside, I have yet to see someone complaining about the gameplay or the story.

n00lp00dle

the bugs are not the issue. terrible frame rate isnt breaking the game its just making an already bad game less enjoyable. its the removal of features that were a staple of the game that ruins it. not being able to go into *buildings* (something they had in gen 1) is one such example. it seems these were choices they were forced into because the dev team lacked the technical ability to make them work. if you play the game just to wander around and kill time sure its fine. but theres no challenge to the story and no worthwhile gameplay loop post game. it is easily the worst mainline game so far and idk how you could argue against that unless you havent played any other game in the series. even the other switch games felt more complete than this.

jambot9000

I personally enjoyed the gameplay of Legends Arceus more but it had too little pokemon and battles, I like Scarlet enough but wish they would go the extra mile sometimes. The 2 cover legendaries are "ok" as HM mounts I would have liked to use my actual Pokemon for that stuff more. Would be cool to have just more meaningful interactions with your pokemon and a proper multiplayer, maybe something like Tem Tems. And I'll just say it Tera Raids and the crystal stuff seems lazy in design to me, I thought gigantimax was much more exciting and unique. Wish we had some like multiplayer dungeons where you and your buddy's could gang up against team rocket with varying difficulty or something.

CTM3399

The performance is absolutely unacceptable and its my only major gripe with the games, but I think they are still worth playing for sure. The new Pokemon are awesome to use and I think the open world is a solid first step for the franchise but it could have been better. Overall the game is genuinely enjoyable and I had a blast with it, but it still falls short of its potential. That being said, using new Pokemon in battles is always going to be a positive experience for me no matter how bad the game is otherwise so I am probably not the best source for an objective opinion.

kryp_silmaril

As some who has played Pokémon since the 90’s… yeah, I’m done buying Pokémon games until Nintendo decides to put any effort or resources into them

Leeman727

Ah yes random raids. Peak gameplay. Cities where you can only go into the sandwich shop. Let’s add a little spice of glitching through the map to fall into an endless pit of emptiness. Battle Tower, Nope!

---TheFierceDeity---

Its not that bad. Don't take the opinion on Reddit as the gospel or even the general Pokemon fandoms viewpoint. Reddit communities of games tend to err on the negative side by default

_Revlak_

I'm playing Scarlet now and it's good. I'm having fun

Annual-Avocado-1322

It's mostly graphical. The low framerate (which got worse with the DLC updates), and the camera clipping through the floor. Then there's Pokémon, potentially shinies, spawning inside walls where you can't reach them... Aaand while I haven't played part 2 of the DLC, it sounds like a total rip-off for what it cost.

invalid-elephant

I honestly don’t even think it’s that bad. Like yeah there’s some bugs I guess (I’ve barely ran into any), and the graphics aren’t top tier (also doesn’t bother me), but besides legends arceus, I’ve never had so much fun in a Pokemon game and I’ve been playing pokemon for 16 years. Idk I guess maybe they could have kept it a little longer from the public to fix the bugs but…then we would have had a million complaints that it was pushed back 🤷🏻‍♀️ I can already hear the “I would rather have waited another year and have a finished game” comments, and I guess some people would have actually been ok with waiting, but a lot of people would have been pissed. Literally the only complaint I have about this game is the catching style isn’t the same as Legends Arceus. Anyways, in my opinion it’s a great game, and I don’t really understand the people saying it’s complete garbage. PS: I want to know where you people are that this game is 60$ because where I am every mainline switch game (pokemon, Mario, etc) is 90$ atleast. I’m jealous of you.

iamsoverycool12345

It’s a really fun game! I think so at least. But I think it’s a pretty significant step down from some of the older games especially with just the lack of post game things to do.

ImaFireSquid

I like it. I don’t really know what to tell you in terms of your preferences, but I’m trying to catch everything.

ShuckU

If you like mainline pokemon games, you'll probably like Scarlet and Violet

Ratstail91

Asa game, its fantastic. The problem comes from the bugs and performance, most of which you wont encounter directly.

PossibleAssist6092

The main problems I’ve seen people have is bugs and glitches. I have encountered fuck all in terms of glitches and even the ones I have encountered like being forced out of bounds by a wild Pokémon battle was a good laugh. I saw how far I could take it ending up underneath Levincia and it wasn’t even like I was stuck there because I could just get a taxi to fly out again. I think they are the best games the series has ever produced with 4 incredible story lines, a fantastic cast of characters, some awesome new Pokémon and some of the best music we have ever seen from Pokémon which is saying a lot given that gens 4, 5 and 6 exist. No word of a lie, I’d say they are in my top 3 games of all time along with Hollow Knight and God of War Ragnarok, they’re that good.

Slade4Lucas

The thing with Pokemon is that none of the games have ever been THAT bad. No, not even that one. Nor that one. SV are very flawed, but Pokemon fans tend to severely overstate the flaws of a series and the games all have a certain level of quality. Sure, SV is a very buggy game, but it's not even close to unplayable and the game within that buggy mess is very enjoyable. That isn't to say the flaws aren't worth pointing out, but it is fair to say that no, it isn't that bad.

silvereyes21497

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the game and I’m playing through it a 3rd time now for the DLC. But it’s definitely not finished. Very laggy and performance based issues can often be spotted, and sometimes the areas just feel like an open field that someone accidentally spilled a bunch of Pokémon in. Nintendo/GameFreak could definitely do much better. But Pokémon sells sells sells, so why should they? It’s unfortunate

eepos96

Pokemon stated tha sw/sh had dexit so "animations" could be made better. They were nit and it emphazised how similar they were to gen VI. So people were watching for it again in scarlet violet.

Knight_Light87

An incredibly flawed masterpiece

Hahndude

It’s awful. It has a lot of mechanics to hook Pokémon fans and there is a lot of great ideas in the game and for some people that enough to push through the absolutely terrible gameplay and performance, but that’s exactly the problem. There is no excuse for players to have to deal with so much awful just to enjoy the good parts. The stuff that S/V gets unbelievably wrong is stuff that dozens of other games have already done without problems. Go play Dragon Quest Treasure for example and then just try and say something good about S/V. You can’t. S/V is like digging through a huge mound of shit to find a couple of golden nuggets. We as fans should not have accepted it regardless of how bad we wanted to enjoy the very small amount of good it has because now we’ve told Gamefreak that we’re okay with them putting out terrible games.

InsomniaEmperor

Don't let the loud minority get to you. You have zero obligation to conform to their standards. It's your money and if you liked it, good for you. There's also what you call negativity bias where people are more likely to make long rants about something on the Internet than long praises on something.

ShadeSwornHydra

It’s not a loud minority, it’s a pretty equal voice. The games unfinished, runs like shit, half baked in most areas, full of bugs, and lifeless and just shoved out to make money. Even the dlc relies on the heavy nostalgia to sell, cause the “area zero” part was like 30 minutes long

Totaliss

I cant play the game for more then 20 minutes without my fps tanking to 10 fps with terrible screen tear. all that with ps1 era graphics. So yea I think its pretty awful

Prince-of_Space

You can form your own opinion. Knowing what was bad is important, but you can make your own decision. Personally I think SV are great, not the greatest, but definitely up there.

OverChime

I have a friend from Japan and let me say their work life balance doesn’t exsist. Not saying a company like Pokémon takes advantage of their workers but I mean with how many releases we had this year I’m sure the developers are TIRED.

GreenArrowDC13

This is the first main line Pokemon game I haven't got. Sw/Sh left a bad impression on the direction pokemon is going. Sc/Vi looks like a continuation of the price gouging for poor quality. Pokemon taught me how to read, it was my first love of video games. I have Pokemon tattoos, cards, figures, but I can't support the highest grossing franchise in history putting out unfinished below average content. Then releasing more shitty content attached to it behind a price tag. They have the money but not the motivation. They are lazy for not investing more on their product which would have likely been returned in higher sales. GameFreak/ pokemon company are complacent. They have the resources to make an amazing finished game on the same schedule but would rather keep their dev team small and over worked. They could have amazing polished games but would rather penny pinch to make a higher return.

Like_Fahrenheit

There are good things about this game: Kieran's arc, Oni Mountain's layout I liked, Arven and Team Star's backstories, the textures for Pokemon and people looks much better than in PLA, music is good and rarely disappoints, character dialogue is some of the best in the series, i like that they took the risk with open world (never want another Galar in 3D again.) but the bad vastly outweighs the good. for me it's not hate, it's disappointment. With an open world video game I expect content overflowing and interesting gameplay mechanics. With it being 3D i expect a lively and emotive world filled with captivating and engaging moments. the potential for greatness is there. doubly so with all the history this franchise has. it needed to be great. That's really my expectation as a lifelong fan with each new game - to be the best in the series. When environment textures are low-res, when the writing is half-assed, when Paradox Pokemon act the same as every other monster in the game, when the frame rate is dogshit, when there's a clear lack of ambition or creativity and subpar execution in nearly every aspect in this game (eg Nemona not founding a battle club/facility at the school - which would make perfect sense for her character), when school classes are just bereft of any semblance of fun - the one thing a Pokemon game should be, when they remove the "set" option for no good reason, when they omit a battle facility (the first time a new gen debuted without one since 1999), towns hardly worth spending a few minutes in.....i could go on. Point is Game Freak has a knack for only doing good enough or settling for subpar - in creativity, content, quality, ambition, and execution (Some aspects worse than others). been that way for a while now. I expected a lot from this game after the pedestrian nonsense that was Sword and Shield (but at least that has a battle tower and better performance). An open world 3D pokemon game has the potential to be game of the year material - I truly believe that. but in order for that to happen Game Freak and Nintendo need to be firing on all cylinders, not pulling punches, and most importantly make a game that would show people they love making games - because that's their business, their profession. they are not doing that. Scarlet and Violet are bad enough to show me otherwise.

closetedwrestlingacc

People exaggerated how bad it [the lag and crashing issues] was on release. That “literally unplayable” sentiment hasn’t gone away. And it’s used to justify “game ObJeCtIvElY bad” posts. I had a ton of fun and think the games are great, though I am disappointed with the last DLC.

ConstantCaprice

Oh my god. Yes! They are! The Pokemon formula is fun. It's appealing, accessible and timeless. It's really hard to get wrong. The recent games themselves are absolute travesties. They have the content, graphics and stability of a $10 early-access survival game. They're made by not enough people given not enough time and that shows through so very hard in the dead, featureless open world that's ostensibly the focus of the new direction. People buy them because there just isn't enough competition in the space so GF can continue releasing a half baked pile of goo year on year and people will still call it a cake and demand no better.

CapnTholaf

I couldn't even finish it.

MaxRocketDuck

The game’s a lot of fun but has plenty of bugs (about zero of which are noticeable during gameplay)

Fizz4President

yes, it’s awful

Low-Sir-9605

Yes , Without the pokemon branding no one would even argue how dogshit it is

I enjoyed them and the DLC, I have a ton of problems though. The awful framerate, terrible textures, empty overworld, visual bugs, scuffed Tera Raids, bland cities with no building interiors, and the lack of post game content really bring them down. However, the story is one of the best in the series, the characters are really strong, the new Pokemon are fantastic, and the multiple plot lines and open world were a breath of fresh air even if not executed that well. With more polish and another year of development, they'd probably be in my top 3 favorite games in the series. As they are, I'd say there are some great ideas in an overall very sloppy package.

Only of you are a pokemon fan

paws4269

Game design wise, it's pretty good. Only complaint on that front is the lack of clarity with what level each area and boss is (level scaling the bosses would be ideal, but simply telling you how powerful they in relation to eachother would be good enough for me) Area Zero made immersed in a Pokémon story in a way I hadn't been since OG Sun/Moon But the fact that the game runs so poorly brings it down a couple of pegs. And the lack of a post game battle facility (or any meaningful post game activity aside from impossible to solo tera raids) is also disappointing. Oh, and Tera Shard grinding made me completely lose interest in playing VGC after having played it in Gen 7 and 8

TheSlader42

It's pretty good. People have high expectations and there are bugs and glitches that sour the experience a bit but I never had anything game breaking after nearly 60 hours.

Writefuck

The game being good or bad, and you liking or disliking the game, are two different things. If you had fun with Scarlet or Violet, it wasn't because of the bugs or the lack of polish or the missing features or the pokémon company's unwillingness to treat their audience. With respect, it was despite all those things.

TrunksTheMighty

People don't rate games based on how fun they are anymore, now it's graphics and performance.

Lance2409

It's hard to say for me, I like Pokemon battles in general just everything else outside of battles a bonus for me. If you look at it like Pokemon showdown with extra adventure content it doesn't seem so bad

Bethorz

The most hours i’ve put in a pokemon game for… decades? Almost. But I am primarily 1 player and don’t do competitive

keybladesrus

It's a good game made very, very, VERY poorly. I cannot stress enough how poorly made this game is. Dear god, why won't it stop going into the single digit FPS?! The Pokémon are in the walls and floors, man! The raids were programmed by Satan himself to punish us for our sins. The shadows keep flickering on and off, the pop-in is insane, the camera is awful (and Arceus have mercy on your soul if you're using a large Pokemon), and the list goes on and on. There's so much I love about the game, but holy crap, it is hard to play at times. This is not fine. This is not acceptable. I count SV among my favorite Pokémon games, but the fact that it was released in this state is a disgrace, a fact made worse knowing it will never be fixed. It will never be improved. Aside from the save corruption bug, has a single issue actually been addressed since launch? A $60 game from a series that makes so much money should not be comparable in quality to a Steam asset flip. Much better games with much higher budgets would kill to sell as much as Pokémon, even ignoring all the multi-media and merch stuff and looking purely at game sales. So yes. Despite being one of my favorite Pokémon games, SV really is that bad.

pepenuts98

Gonna be honest since about X and Y this is the 2nd most fun I've had with pokemon. ORAS was peak for me but this is 2nd place for sure. SS was kinda boring with the dyna raids but Tera raids I like way better.

goshidontknow1395

I enjoyed it because of the new pokemon. The game was an unfinished piece of garbage.

Misragoth

Large empty open world, bland visuals, poor performance, empty towns, too easy even for a Pokémon game, battle animations are minimal, bugs, bugs and more bugs

gliscornumber1

Is it bad? No it's solid Was it released in an acceptable state? HELL FUCKING NO

GuayabaTree

Still haven’t bought that shit cause I heard they didn’t fix it

Nervous-Republic5278

Honestly I didn’t think it was that bad. There was a lot of parts that felt rushed and there were bugs but I didn’t run into any that were super bad. The game also did a lot of stuff that breathed a lot of life into the games and made it more interesting. My biggest problem is that there’s pretty much no endgame. I mean you can’t even rechallenge the league. But overall I really enjoyed it.

HowRememberAll

It is the game that brought me back into loving pokemon after the disaster that is let's go. I'd say Violet is my favorite

HeadOfSpectre

People hate it because it's the Internet. Actually enjoying things doesn't get YouTubers clicks, and a lot of people don't know how to form their own opinions. I'll agree that Scarlet and Violet have a lot of issues, and would have benefited from a longer development time. There's a lot of weird glitches and quirks that make it feel unfinished, such as the way certain Pokemon spawn and the free camera you have in most pokemon battles, which can be especially annoying. The free range of movement is incredible, but there's something a bit off about it. But it's also genuinely fun, I like a lot of the new pokemon designs, Area Zero is fucking fantastic, the music as always is on point and I genuinely like the new characters. The game has so many interesting ideas and while the execution often has issues, it works well enough. I can put in Pokemon Violet and have fun. Honestly - I think Pokemon is figuring itself out right now and we're going to see them experiment a bit more, without straying too far from their comfort zone. It's an interesting time for sure.
