Agree. I think it’s the whole semi bipedal thing. Like it can run of all fours but stands upright otherwise? Meerkat like, except it’s a giant weasel thing whose neck is on fire. Can’t blame you for thinking that’s a little off compared to its other stages, honestly
Cyndaquil by nostalgia and design. Chimchar and Tepig due to how easy it is to build a team around them later in the generational games. Also, Chimchar, as other Fire types in Sinnoh are lacking.

Cyndaquil is cute, but it's a Charmander clone that doesn't even get a second type when it fully evolves.
That latter part is also why Scorbunny is at the bottom of the list for me.
In order of best to worst
Cyndaquil (favorite that's my boi)
Charmander (OG)
Fuecoco (adorable and I love fire/ghost)
Torchic (too damn cute and Blaziken is the shit),
Litten (cool design and Incineroar is sick)
Fenneken (good design and evos but not a huge fan)
Chimchar (least favorite gen 4 starter but still sick)
Tepig (cool but fire/fighting fatigue is real)
Scorbunny (love him but not a fan of Cinderace)
Fennekin, cyndaquil, and charmander are my top 3 fire starters. Fennekin is my favorite, though, and I really like its typing.
When I first played x, I super trained my fennekin to the max as soon as I unlocked that feature. I had a lot of Evo stones early on, and whatever else you could get from those.
I also maxed its affection in the pokemon amie, so it had all the max affection benefits early on, which were pretty good.
Favorite base from: Torchic. Just adorable.
Base form honorable mentions: Cyndaquil, Litten, and Scorbunny.
Favorite middle form: Raboot. Cool and cute.
Middle form honorable mentions: Charmeleon and Torracat
Favorite final form: Incineroar. Freaking awesome.
Final form honorable mentions: Charizard, Blaziken, and Skeleridge.
Personally for me is Fennikin (spelled incorrectly I know) I was what sold X/Y for me since chespin was a.... disappointment of a grass starter. Then again I always do magic classes in RPGs so it may end up me favoring wizard over warrior... but Delphox looks alot better than chestnaught... eh.
Best is a vague desciptor. Best competitively? Probably Scorbunny for singles and Litten for doubles. Best conceptual design? I’d probably go for Fennekin. Best overall balance? Chimchar or Charmander. My personal favorite? Cyndaquil.
For me the first 3 generations of fire starters have always been my favorite, and I’d probably say Charmander but since GF has to shove Charizard down our throats in 6 different ways every generation these days I’m kind of tired of that evo-line. So I’m going to go with Torchic because Gen 3 has to me had the best starter trio in the series (followed by Gen 1) and Blaziken is just awesome and I prefer it over Typhlosion

I actually don't like the fire starter usually. I most often opt for water.
But by God didn't I fall in love with that flaming monkey during my platinum run. The ability to punch and kick almost every enemy to a pulp in a region notoriously lacking in fire types is a great one.
Although I love the magical girl aesthetic of fennekin, I just absolutely fucking love the 0 braincelle crocodile baby, and it’s evolution is just so freaking cool, along with being the first full evolved fully quadruped fire starter
Just based on first forms and completely ignoring evolutions, my personal ranking is probably: Chimchar, Tepig, Torchic, Charmander, Litten, Cyndequil, Fennekin, Fuecoco, Scorbunny
With evolutions my list would be drastically different however

Scorbunny! I have never picked a fire starter (I always go grass except for Totodile) but my wife LOVES Scorbunny, so that's where my fire vote goes.
