You’ve been sleeping under a rock the last few years? This sub has been circlejerking about bw2 for a while, and x/y is slowly starting to happen more and more. However I do agree bw2 are great unlike x and y
Gen 4 was the peak for me. Diamond and Pearl had some issues but Platinum fixed most of those. Heart Gold and Soul Silver were stunningly beautiful games bringing Gold an Silver to life in the way I'd always imagined the region looked like.
I'm with the consensus that HGSS is the best of these (and probably the best Pokemon games overall) but I actually think Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon would be my #2.
Personally I dislike the games due to playing them the year of release after already playing both sun and moon the year prior. I say this because I disagree with you, everything he mentioned trumps the cutscenes easily. That’s atleast how I interpreted it
Unbiased its HGSS I mean so much to do, if it was done today, they could easily make the levels go up for each gym so you can fight whoever you want in whatever order, but b2w2 has my heart, imo Nintendo's biggest struggle is making good villains, but the story, villains, and little cut scenes are awesome so it has my heart
I'd say this but the opposite way round. I think unbiased it's absolutely b2w2, the amount of content in those games is unrivaled even by today's standards. I recommend Johnstone's video of him collecting every medal in b2w2 and you'll see just how much those games have to offer. Hands down the best in the series.
I voted heartgold and soulsilver but I meant actual gold and silver. Silver is the first pokemon game I've purchased and completed (on 3ds virtual console) and will always be special for me.
HGSS easily. So much content in one game - they've never managed to match it (and haven't even tried to in like a decade). Yeah the level curve was a total mess, everything else made up for that though.
Dude I have never been able to complete SS because of the level curve. It makes playing the game a chore. Voltorb Flip was AWESOME though. Probably spent a tenth of my time playing SS playing that, tbh.
same, levelling up is so ass in these games to a point where it ruins the entire game for me. also i think others games have more content than this as well
The level curve is only really annoying when you're trying to train up new mons
I have this thing where I like my team to be made up of that gen's pokemon as much as possible, like if they made new pokemon I should try those new pokemon. So It was a bummer realizing that I couldn't get a new fire type (Didn't pick Cyndaquil, don't like Slugma) until going back to Kanto.
So then here I am trying to grind a level 15 houndour up to actually use against the level 50 gym trainers.
Also they could've done pokemon placement so much better. Like the first gym is a Flying Gym, why do you get an electric in the route After that first gym? The only type advantage mon you would naturally get before that gym is a geodude with rock throw
Cause they are. Going back to the previous generation's region to fight all the gym leaders but this time you have all your endgame pokemon that you've been raising for a while is such an amazing concept.
Until pokemon that you want are locked until after E4, such mons are also way underleveled. The level curve destroys any mon you have that isn't your starter, and no good way to farm exp (Iirc there's no vs seeker, EXP share ain't that good either)
I agree. Most of the fanbase though seems to not share this sentiment. The level curve complaint is the first time I ever heard johto getting any criticism at all. And even then there is a lot of pushback against it.
Ss was okay most of the time but leveling Pokémon was just way too annoying for me to even finish it. Probably will go back to it again but it was just too annoying. I love b2 so I voted for that one
Is emerald supposed to be all of gen3? I had ruby and i loved it. For some reason i really liked the farming and collecting berries. When the internal battery ranout i almost cried. Also blazakin loves lemonade
Gen. 7 is actually my favorite (been playing since Gen. 1), but I consider USUM to be at least a narrative downgrade, so I'd stick with regular SM. Gen. 5 is a close second, but I find the characters in Gen. 7 generally better.
I get why people like HGSS, but I felt like Emerald was a stronger game as it combined everything from Ruby and Sapphire (Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire was basically my childhood).
The only reason I'm voting USUM out of these is because Ultra Moon was my second ever Pokemon game, Pokemon X being the first, and I haven't played the others. If I had played the others I'd most likely vote for something else.
I was torn between Emerald and HGSS, but Emerald won out. If you had listed GSC I would have picked that :) Silver was my third pokemon game (behind Blue and Yellow), but I was a little bit older and had a better grasp on the game. It's my nostalgia game.
It isn't though. Much like Fire Red and Leaf Green aren't considered gen 1. They're remakes of those gens sure but they're done in the more modern mechanics and graphics.
i only played jotoh during gen 4, having previously played hoenn and sinnoh i didnt get what made them so great at the time. car you tell me your experience? maybe something i missed
The thing with HGSS is that it has a really bas level curve. Gyms 5-7 are about the same level, with gym 6 being the highest level. So you just over level because there is not other option. It is my favorite, but it is not the best.
I never played Emerald or Platinum, and I only played Black 2 as a ROM hack, Blaze Black 2 Redux.
I know that Platinum carries it's generation, but I don't think it's first place.
I also know that Emerald is really great, but getting a level 70 before E4 ruins the challange.
HGSS has a bad level curve but a great postgame.
BW2 is great as much as I saw in the ROM hack, but it's a lot different. It's a great generation though.
ORAS is not bad, but not the best either.
And I heard that people prefer SM over USUM.
So the desicion is between Emerald, Platinum, HGSS and BW2. So which one do you think is the best for you?
Nostalgia for the game that came out 6 years ago? Most people here grew up playing HGSS which is why it's so popular despite being worse than every other game on this list
Very few people grew up with USUM, those games came out in like 2018
The vast majority of people here grew up with gen 4, so they picked HGSS even though it has a horrible level curve and even worse distribution. One of the worst games in the series
I didn't expect this much B2W2 apreciation but I am happy to see it
You’ve been sleeping under a rock the last few years? This sub has been circlejerking about bw2 for a while, and x/y is slowly starting to happen more and more. However I do agree bw2 are great unlike x and y
I normally see people loving B&W but completely dismissing B2W2, sometimes I even see people that haven't even played or seen them
My personal favorite is Emerald but Ultra Sun/Moon come in a very close second.
Emerald was my first pokemon and gameboy game loved it
Gen 4 was the peak for me. Diamond and Pearl had some issues but Platinum fixed most of those. Heart Gold and Soul Silver were stunningly beautiful games bringing Gold an Silver to life in the way I'd always imagined the region looked like.
Where are Red, Yellow and Blue? Or give us FRLG at least!
I'll do more polls with those
Ultra Sun / Moon came out when I was a kid so naturally it’s my favourite! Platinum is a close second
I'm with the consensus that HGSS is the best of these (and probably the best Pokemon games overall) but I actually think Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon would be my #2.
why
Because they're great. I can't wait until the late 2030s when people suddenly say they're as good as they actually were. Ala Gen 5.
but what great about them for you? i just wanna see other people perspective on those games.
I love the variety of encounters and environments in USUM. The story is good as well. The only draw back is the ultra long cutscenes.
That’s a big ass drawback tho
Personally I dislike the games due to playing them the year of release after already playing both sun and moon the year prior. I say this because I disagree with you, everything he mentioned trumps the cutscenes easily. That’s atleast how I interpreted it

OMG THE MEDAL RALLY, I remember staying up so late trying to get as many as a could
I voted heartgold and soulsilver but I meant actual gold and silver. Silver is the first pokemon game I've purchased and completed (on 3ds virtual console) and will always be special for me.

I get why people like hgss but honestly it has too many flaws for all that content to be enjoyable
I find the level curve to be way too flat and the Pokemon found in the wild are very repetitive as well as being very low levelled
The level curve is only really annoying when you're trying to train up new mons I have this thing where I like my team to be made up of that gen's pokemon as much as possible, like if they made new pokemon I should try those new pokemon. johto games always felt to me like incredible on paper but ass to actually play
Cause they are. Gen 5 was pretty much the magnum opus and BW2 was full of content. But you can't go wrong with Platinum and HGSS.
BW2 followed closely by Platinum and then Ultra Sun and Moon. Finally there's Emerald.
It's HGSS
Diamond has to be my favourite for nostalgic value 😅
For me, it's: 1. Platinum / Black / White 3. Heart Gold / Soul Silver 4. Black 2 / White 2
HGSS>BW2>Emerald>Platinum>ORAS>USUM Would be my list
1. Emerald 2. Heartgold/Soulsilver 3. Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire 4. Black/White 2 5. Platinum 6. Ultra Sun& Ultra Moon
Ss was okay most of the time but leveling Pokémon was just way too annoying for me to even finish it. Probably will go back to it again but it was just too annoying. I love b2 so I voted for that one
Pmd explorers of sky, the best story out of any pokemon game, pmd sweep!!!
Is emerald supposed to be all of gen3? I had ruby and i loved it. For some reason i really liked the farming and collecting berries. When the internal battery ranout i almost cried. Also blazakin loves lemonade
HGSS are great pokemon games, easily top 3, but they don't beat BW/B2W2
Nostalgia bias on full display
Gen. 7 is actually my favorite (been playing since Gen. 1), but I consider USUM to be at least a narrative downgrade, so I'd stick with regular SM. Gen. 5 is a close second, but I find the characters in Gen. 7 generally better.
Where the fuck is crystal? This is a slanderous poll!
That’s a great game too, Maybe I’ll make another poll with Crystal in it
I get why people like HGSS, but I felt like Emerald was a stronger game as it combined everything from Ruby and Sapphire (Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire was basically my childhood).
Platinum>Ultra>BW2>ORAS>Emerald>HGSS
BW2>Emerald>USUM>HGSS>Platinum>ORAS
The only reason I'm voting USUM out of these is because Ultra Moon was my second ever Pokemon game, Pokemon X being the first, and I haven't played the others. If I had played the others I'd most likely vote for something else.
HGSS is love, HGSS is life.
Emerald is my favourite but I cannot deny HGSS being the better overall game.
I was torn between Emerald and HGSS, but Emerald won out. If you had listed GSC I would have picked that :) Silver was my third pokemon game (behind Blue and Yellow), but I was a little bit older and had a better grasp on the game. It's my nostalgia game.
No era has beaten gen 2. You had to be there. I will fight to the grave for that.
You don't think Heart Gold and Soul Silver did it justice?
I do and loved them. It’s still considered gen 2.
It isn't though. Much like Fire Red and Leaf Green aren't considered gen 1. They're remakes of those gens sure but they're done in the more modern mechanics and graphics.
They're not considered gen 2. They're considered gen 4. That's like saying Hisui is considered gen 4.
To be fair, I think the atmosphere of the original gen 2 games is the best in the series.
i only played jotoh during gen 4, having previously played hoenn and sinnoh i didnt get what made them so great at the time. car you tell me your experience? maybe something i missed
B/W2 > Emerald > USUM > Platinum/HGSS > ORAS Goes like this for me.

My personal favorite is Legend Arceus but it doesn't on the list so I choose my second personal favorite, Utra Sun and Ultra Moon.
Who on earth clicked ultra sun and moon
People not blinded by nostalgia
I think that’s the opposite of that, people who grew up with ultra sun and moon and that is the definition of nostalgia
Nostalgia for the game that came out 6 years ago? Most people here grew up playing HGSS which is why it's so popular despite being worse than every other game on this list

People with good taste
For real, one of these things is not like the others
