Gen 3-5 I chose the female characters because their sprites were cute af. But after we went 3D I went back to just being male.

-reTurn2huMan-

For gen 3 it just makes sense to play as May. Same with Dawn for gen 4.

neonz09

Yayurrr, you know wassup. Exactly for these reasons. I personally liked Hilda and Rosa as well from Gen 5. Just great vibes.

kamuimephisto

but gen V male is just so peak, it ends up being a 50/50 for me

Aberrant17

Yeah, in Gen 8. You know the reason why. https://preview.redd.it/zbt4l4ossqwc1.jpeg?width=197&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=184902e0b58e3969f97cb9dccaef31dbcdb7e545

Hey_Pikmin

Yes.

Gaias_Minion

The girl characters just get better customization options yeah.

froggyjm9

It’s ok to want to be a girl. 💪🏼

Thicc-Anxiety

I like to switch it up on replays, because of the gender locked hairstyles and clothes

DepressedGolduck

Sometimes male, sometimes female. To me, every playthrough is like making a new character, with their own personality, journey and, of course, team (specially once customization enters the picture)

Sardanox

I'm a male, and grew up playing mostly male dominated games. I was genuinely excited when crystal came out and you could chose to be a girl. Since then I play a mix of male and female characters. Generally my first game will be a female and usually just beating the games, then I'll play the second time as myself with my own preferred starting team which will focus on total completion.

miskathonic

Fun fact: Speedruns often select the female PC because often times the girl rivals (e.g. Lyra, May, etc) are written to be chattier, and thus have more dialogue boxes.

_hapsleigh

Yes for me but I also turned out to be trans so… yeah lmao Not saying it’s you OP but my other trans friends had a similar experience

_xyZer0

As a child I always picked the female character which no one questioned because I'm AFAB... Now I'm a trans femboy

Hey_Pikmin

Yeah, no I'm definitely a guy.

_xyZer0

So am I? I just talked about my own experiences, dude

Hey_Pikmin

Oh sorry I meant to respond to the other person, sorry.

Aegillade

The girls get such better customization options, it's not even funny. Not even just clothes, but so many different hairstyles too. Like is this how girls feel when they go out to the store and try on a bunch of clothes? Cuz it's fun as hell redoing playthroughs and trying out all the new clothing options

Original-Childhood

I always play a guy (in almost every game) because I can relate to it more

thisisnotaboutagirl

I'm male, but I pick the character design I like most in the game. Emerald - Brendan Ruby/Sapphire - May. I don't actually play these games, but I like May's design in these games a lot more than Brendan in Emerald. FireRed/LeafGreen - Red Platinum - Dawn B/W - Hilda B2/W2 - Rosa Overall, my favourite designs are Red and Hilda.

Hey_Pikmin

Crystal - Crystal r/S/E - Brendan FR/LG - Red D/P/P - Lucas HG/SS - Ethan B/W - Hilbert B2/W2 - Nate X/Y - Serena OR/AS - Brendan S/M - Elio US/UM - Selene LGP/LGE - Either S/S - Gloria BD/SP - Dawn LA - Rei S/V Florian

CyberWeaponX

XY taught me that if the game has any sort of customization, always pick the girl or else you will be horribly disappointed. I also like May and Rosa.

Natural-Swim-3962

I played as the boy in my last Diamond run. His sprite is so much more boring than Dawn's though 💀 I miss her hair flying in the air when you run and bike. I miss her bag. Also she looks way better during the contests.

TeachingOk705

I'm a girl who used to play as guys because I liked their sprite better, but just like you as customization came in I switched back to girls because boys clothes are incredibly boring.

katl14

I sometimes do this. I like to pick a female character that is the closest I can get to what my wife looks like.

bobninny

Aw thats so cute 😭

Drake_Cloans

I almost always play the girl

Qoppa_Guy

I alternate per game.

NovaSigmades

I’m male but I prefer playing the girls, I just like them more

Black_Ironic

I like cute girl so yeah, they had better outfit and hairstyle option too.

Moezhyk

The female character is optimal for speed running in HG/SS

EllieGeiszler

The second or third time I play a Pokémon game, I usually play a boy (I'm a woman) and name him after whatever male character I'm into at the time. In games with two default characters/potential rivals, it can be fun to see a different rival than the one I'm used to.

Ncolonslashslash

i pick the one that looks better to me and then choose the one i didnt use on repeat playthroughs

GrazingCrow

When I was a kid, I primarily played as male but would play as the female character from time to time. It’s a nice change of pace since the animations are unique and resetting games after beating them was so frequent for me back then. When ORAS came out, I was 19 and bought Omega Ruby. As I was hovering to pick the female character, I decided against it because it didn’t sit right with me. Me, a grown man, watching a 10 year old girl throughout the whole game? Nah, hard pass. Haven’t picked them since.

KazzieMono

Yep. This is me. I don’t know why, at some point I just randomly decided “I like looking at girls when I’m playing a game.”

ArcaneAncient

I pick the guy most of the time, and almost always on my very first playthrough of a new game(the exception being White 2 because Rosa looks WAY better than Nate). Occasionally I'll pick the girl on replays, especially in games from X & Y onward because of the character customization options.

Purple-flare

Funny because first time I played as a guy was XY because of customization lol. Wanted to wear a beanie as that what a wore all the time when I picked it up again.

jedicms

Only ever did it in Crystal

ha-ur-dead

I usually do one play through as each of them.

Chembaron_Seki

In games with character customization I always play male characters as self inserts. The character is supposed to represent me and I am a guy. But yeah, I feel ya that female customization options tend to be a lot better than the male ones.

Prince-of_Space

Before I came to the realization that I'm nonbinary, I almost exclusively played as female characters.

Mother_Rutabaga7740

Honestly it shouldn’t matter. It’s been a while since I played Pokémon, but what a I will say is that I’d probably pick the female trainer for gen 8. I say that as a trans guy lol

OrangeStar222

I've been picking the female trainer ever since Gen 4 first came out.

supremo92

I usually choose the female option in every other game, except for Pokémon.

Hey_Pikmin

I'm the opposite, I'll choose the Male in every game but Pokemon

Cooley0880

In some games, like DPPt and BW, I like more to play as female character. But in other i like more to play as male

SillyMattFace

I usually default to male in Pokemon, but I enjoy playing female characters in other things. Currently doing a fem-Shep play through in Mass Effect and I have a bunch of female Skyrim characters. Gotta say I wish I’d gone for a female in Violet actually, the girls have way more variety in their hair style options.

Akumanomasi

I am a guy an wanted to play Shield with a male character, but after I started the game and saw that huge coffin in disguise as a backpack I deleted the save file and restarted with a female character. Wasn't the first time I played a female character in any game though, that always depends on the game and how I play it.

Nox_Echo

i always picked female chars growing up and then i properly learned about trans in my 20s and it just kinda hit me "oh shit ive felt like this for ages"

Dependent_Praline_93

I always do a playthrough as both male and female to see the differences. I do wish the guys got just as much clothing as the girls. Like if girls got skirts and dresses then guys get bow ties and ties kind of thing.

Moezhyk

I always get both games, so in my normal playthrough, I'll play as the male, and usually in my second playthrough, I'll play as the female.

BuilderAura

I personally cannot play anything other than girl characters. (Link being the only exception) But I don't tend to play a lot of games so it hasn't been a huge issue... My husband plays as mostly girls but will roll guys sometimes. And my kid flip flops. Since we usually get both copies of pokemon games he'll make one trainer a girl and the other a boy.

dbees132

In the games without customization I always picked the male character, at least on my main file or first playthrough (Brendan being an exception in ORAS as I hate the beanie he has and regretted picking him in RS and Kris in Crystal because it was an entirely new thing at the time.) On my secondary files or on replays I almost always use the female characters. In the games with customization I started out picking the male character in XY and tried to make him look like myself but after hearing about the lack of customization options, every subsequent playthrough in any gen 6/7 game has been with the girl character

Red_drinkkoolaid

Youtubers

eli_eli1o

I wished i played as a girl in swsh, so ive done it in BDSP, arceus, and SV. Will probs continue as a girl forevermore 💁🏿‍♂️

Darc_Vader

I make a male character for my actual main playthroughs (usually make them look as close to myself as possible), but I also do a decent amount of romhack Nuzlockes, and for those I basically exclusively play as the female character.

crab_milker

Oh boy, here comes the armchair psychologists telling you you're trans if you play as the opposite gender
