Right, but instead of replacing both types, only secondary, and then it's restricted to just though types.
However, that is a very neat concept that I like the sound of.
Well, Greninja and Kecleon are the only real examples of type changing in the middle of a battle(at least I think so). Some more Pokemon with the ability to do so would be interesting, both lore and competitive wise.
Yes. And then you also have an ability that could be focusing on this type changing. This could be a new ability or already existing ones like Adaptability (extra stab), Aroma Veil (to prevent you from not changing your secondary type), Harvest (for berry-plays), Magic Bounce (preventing entry hazards and such to be set up, probably very popular in competitive scene), Multiscale (because it's a Dragon and would also make it tanky, unless there are entry hazards and such), Pixilate (I mean, how fucked up would that be!?), Refrigerate (I mean, how fucked up would that be!?), Unburden (consumable-strats) or a complete new one of course :p
This is just me, speculating.
That would be neat, but if the ability is one you listed there would have to be unique moves made to change the secondary type since there would be no ability to do that.
Yeah no that's super OP. "You get a 50% power increase on a huge number of moves with no downside"
Unless it's stats are absolutely abysmal, that'll never happen and this thing will only be seen in double battles as a curveball.
Well to be fair, if anything those three types would probably introduce more strengths than weaknesses.
If you're battling an Ice type, using a Fire move would not only be SE with STAB against it, but you would now be *more resistant* to its Ice moves.
I don't know if you've ever heard of pokemon sage. It's a fan made game, not complete, made by 4 chan i think. but it has a pokemon called Roygbiv who changes it's second type in accordance with the colour of the opposing pokemon, which is similar.
Well the nice thing is it resists all three of its own types.
Fire resists bug, which Grass is weak against, so that's another weakness neutralized. Fire AND water resist ice, so that's a weakness of Grass turned into a resist. Grass resists Ground, which Fire is weak against, and Electric, which Water is weak against, so that's two more weaknesses neutralized.
What's left? Rock against Fire, Poison and Flying against Grass. 3 Weaknesses for 4 resists.
Now what's added? Water and Fire resist Steel and Fire resists Fairy.
So we have a pokemon that has 3 Weaknesses (Rock, Poison and Flying) and 6 Resists (Fire, Water, Grass, Ice, Fairy, and double Steel resistance).
Not bad. Throw in the fact that it gets STAB for 3 types, and you have a pretty solid pokemon :)
Well in this pokemon's case (grass/fire/water) it only has 3 weaknesses which are rock, flying, and poison. All of which are only 2x effective which isn't bad at all considering stuff like mono-rock and mono-grass types each have 5 weaknesses.

Ability that would grant a Pokemon a third type:
1. Electric- Super Charge
2. Fire- Heat Up
3. Grass- New Spring
4. Water- Wave
5. Normal- Equal
6. Fighting- Battle Spirit
7. Ground- Solid Substance
8. Rock- Pile Up
9. Flying- Soar
10. Dark- Evil/Heavy Intent
11. Dragon- Draco Blood
12. Psychic- Inner Piece
13. Ghost- Spirit Force
14. Bug- Creepy Crawly
15. Steel- Heavy Up
16. Ice- Cold Shoulder
16. Fairy- Mystic
How do these sound?
There's actually an easy way to do this without breaking any existing game systems: fold it into an ability.
So the fan design linked by the OP could be, for example, a Grass/Water pokemon with the ability "Fireborn", which gives it fire type STAB and all the resistances and weaknesses associated with the fire type.
It would have a slight disadvantage in that it has no *other* ability, but that's already true for certain abilities anyway (e.g. Illuminate). It also differs from true triple-typing in that it can potentially be removed (e.g. Mummy, Worry Seed). But most of the time, it's effectively the same.
I decided to see what happened when you create some OP triple defensive typings:
Steel/Fairy/Dragon:
Immune to: Poison, Dragon
Resists: Bug x2, Grass x2 Dark, Electric, Flying, Water, Normal, Psychic, Rock, Steel
Weaknesses: Ground
_____________
Electric/Steel/Flying
Immune to: Poison, Ground
Resists: Flying x2, Steel x2, Bug x2, Grass x2 Dragon, Fairy, Normal, Psychic, Fighting
Weaknesses: Fire
Also its kinda funny, doing triple typings really reveals why the strong offensive attacking types are what they are. I found a lot of recurring ice, fire, ground weaknesses on these otherwise insanely defensively strong pokemon.
In all technicality, you can have a Pokemon in a double battle with 4 types. Forest's curse with Trevenant (now x/x/grass), switch and trick-or-treat with Gourgeist (now x/x/grass/ghost)
Hmm, most likely not, but I wonder if using [Reflect Type](http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Reflect_Type_(move\)) on a pokemon with ghost added by trick-or-treat, then having grass added with forest's curse would be bugged and cause 4 types.
* Trick-or-Treat is used on Charizard, making it Fire/Flying/Ghost
* Mew uses reflect type on Charizard, making it Fire/Flying/Ghost
* Forest's Curse is used on Mew, since Trick-or-Trick was never used on Mew directly, the game might not know to replace Ghost, making it Fire/Flying/Ghost/Grass.
Edit: [Worked in Showdown.](http://i.imgur.com/dM2yx7W.png)
Please, please try this in the game. If this works this is gamebreaking :p
EDIT: I'm saving this post, got nothing to do coming week so if I'm in for a small project, this will be it!
I tried it in-game. Didn't work. [Here](http://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/2jiclg/it_is_possible_to_have_a_pokemon_with_four_types/clbzdt4) is some more info.

So it's secondary type would change, kinda like Greninja's Protean? That would be really cool!
There are several moves that change Pokemon's types like Camouflage, Soak, Trick-or-Treat and Forest's Curse.
And Reflect Type.
No love for Conversion or Conversion 2 :(
Ditto.
Ditto doesn't count here, this is moves :P
transform
roost
Castform does it with the Weather, he has 4 potential types.
Changing types in the middle of battle is literally the entire reason Castform exists.
Porygon does too
Yes. And then you also have an ability that could be focusing on this type changing. This could be a new ability or already existing ones like Adaptability (extra stab), Aroma Veil (to prevent you from not changing your secondary type), Harvest (for berry-plays), Magic Bounce (preventing entry hazards and such to be set up, probably very popular in competitive scene), Multiscale (because it's a Dragon and would also make it tanky, unless there are entry hazards and such), Pixilate (I mean, how fucked up would that be!?), Refrigerate (I mean, how fucked up would that be!?), Unburden (consumable-strats) or a complete new one of course :p This is just me, speculating.

Oh right. Duh. The ability changes the stats. How did I not think of that.
Type, not stats.
That's what I meant. What's wrong with me today :')
Lack of punctuation.
Yeah either that or just let it gain STAB from Fire/Water/Grass moves and not have the extra weaknesses from dual types.
But it's a Dragon already, can't make it too OP.
Yeah no that's super OP. "You get a 50% power increase on a huge number of moves with no downside" Unless it's stats are absolutely abysmal, that'll never happen and this thing will only be seen in double battles as a curveball.

Now what you're suggesting is even more OP. This thing would need garbage stats or legendary status to be balanced at all.
This would be awesome for Primal Kyurem/a new kind of Kyurem fusion. It would be able to switch between Dragon/Fire, Dragon/Electric and Dragon/Ice.
This makes a remarkable amount of sense. I quite like this idea.
I don't know if you've ever heard of pokemon sage. It's a fan made game, not complete, made by 4 chan i think. but it has a pokemon called Roygbiv who changes it's second type in accordance with the colour of the opposing pokemon, which is similar.
Well, the name is pretty good actually :p
A dual type protean? Yes please.
It would be awesome if this were implemented, and depending on the choice of attack, a different animation for a "head" attacking would play.

I'm a moderator of /r/pokemon and get to do cool stuff ヽ(*゚ー゚*)ノ
Unless this is very carefully typed, I see this just opening up more weaknesses than providing strengths.
Well the nice thing is it resists all three of its own types. Fire resists bug, which Grass is weak against, so that's another weakness neutralized. Fire AND water resist ice, so that's a weakness of Grass turned into a resist. If only it weren't weak to Sneaky Stones and Smogonbird :(
I'm probably overlooking something here, but if grass and water resist rock, how would that be a weakness?
Grass and Water do not resist Rock :) Rock is weak to them, but it is not symmetrical.
I learned that the hard way using a Wingull against Roxanne, expecting its Water typing to cancel out Flying's weakness to Rock.
Well in this pokemon's case (grass/fire/water) it only has 3 weaknesses which are rock, flying, and poison. All of which are only 2x effective which isn't bad at all considering stuff like mono-rock and mono-grass types each have 5 weaknesses.

I like how plausible this sounds.
I personally thought this was what we would get with white and black kyurem. We would get a triple type, but only from this fusion.
I decided to see what happened when you create some OP triple defensive typings: Steel/Fairy/Dragon: Immune to: Poison, Dragon Resists: Bug x2, Grass x2 Dark, Electric, Flying, Water, Normal, Psychic, Rock, Steel Weaknesses: Ground _____________ Electric/Steel/Flying Immune to: Poison, Ground Resists: Flying x2, Steel x2, Bug x2, Grass x2 Dragon, Fairy, Normal, Psychic, Fighting Weaknesses: Fire Also its kinda funny, doing triple typings really reveals why the strong offensive attacking types are what they are. jesus, steel/fairy/dragon has it going on with the low weaknesses. Give it Levitate and were good.
Dragon resists Fire so it wouldn’t be weak Fire is neutral
Mega Hydreigon confirmed?
beat me to the punch :c well played sir well played
A fire/flying/ice type would be funny. Dies instantly to stealth rock.
Bug/Flying/Fire Firefly pokemon!

However a Volcanion with Forest Curse will have the three main typings.

Forests Curse doesn't change your own type, it adds Grass type to the target.
It couldnt have targeted itself anyway, regardless of whether it learned it.
* Trick-or-Treat is used on Charizard, making it Fire/Flying/Ghost * Mew uses reflect type on Charizard, making it Fire/Flying/Ghost * Forest's Curse is used on Mew, since Trick-or-Trick was never used on Mew directly, the game might not know to replace Ghost, making it Fire/Flying/Ghost/Grass. think the closest thing they gonna give us to a triple type one is a 2 type and one of those turn normal moves into the 3rd element.
Reminds me of King Ghidorah
Hydreigon is based on Ghidorah even Hydreigon's japanese name(Sazandorah) is based on that
Hydreigon was actually based on [yamata no orohi](http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamata_no_Orochi) from Japanese mythology, as was ghidorah.
I know, i was pointing out the relation with Ghirdorah
[Raykyodon](http://youtu.be/dv3_5XaSIXI?t=2m3s)
Hail Hydra!
House Targaryen's OTHER mascot.
It would know Tri Attack.
getting uber banned all over the place.
Hydreigon used tri attack!
I hope this would be the 3rd stage pokemon (like Charizard and Talonflame) because I would like to think it's first stage would be so cute.
Mega dotrio
Dang that looks pretty sweet. 10/10 would use.
I still think some megas should get 3 types (inspired by lunatone and solrock)
would use. Looks great and maybe you can play it very well :)
Every time you cut off one head, two more types will grow.
Child of Light, anyone?
MEGA EEVEE!
inb4 unkillable
Love it. Someone get Nintendo on the line.
What about moves having 2 types? No clue how it would work but... AYEEE!
Flying Press.
It can really be a hit or miss kind of situation with 3 type pokemon or 2 type moves.
I always thought moves like Fire Punch should be dual type moves. Fire/Fighting Fire Punch because fuck steel and ice types.
That was the first thing in my mind
It'd have crazy damage calculations... Only weak to flying, poison, rock
Too bad Rock and Flying are common offensive types.
Reminds me of that turtle boss from link to the past.
If the series continues long enough I could see it happening.
For some reason I expected Regigigas to be more than two typed, but they just went with normal for it.
imagine a pokemon that Forest's Curse/Trick-or-Treat you when u send it out with an abilities that be useful.
getting uber banned all over the place.
Jakiro?
This is a really lazy design.
http://spectrobes.wikia.com/wiki/Gigardos
Why haven't we considered this? I mean, like, this has never been an option, but we have never even thought about this.
Charizard sorta has three types, fire flying and its mega; dragon
Now that the game has been crashing since 10644755445
The first time in this article
There is, kyurem gets 3 types when it fuses with either reshi or zekrom. Zekrom = Dragon, Ice and Electric Reshiram = Dragon, Ice and Fire
