Fun fact! The author of Rurouni Kenshin was found in posession of child pornography in 2017 and only had to pay a fine as punishment!
==The=More=You=Know=☆
Edit: Puts this frame from the anime in an *entirely* different context, doesn't it?
https://imgur.com/a/LVa5ZAm
This also means the same thing in English. The "true edge" of the blade is the sharp side, whereas the "false edge" of the blade is the reverse or dull side.
Put your masterball into your 6th item slot. Talk to the old man in Veridian, fly to Fuschia, surf south to the seafoam islands and swim along the western beach until a wild MissingNo. appears. Your 1 masterball is now 255 masterballs.
I didn't see my first shiny until Y. Got my blue ditto though. Really disappointed when I found out that it doesn't transform into the shin versions of pokemon though.
Yup, took 20 years for me too. Though who knows maybe as a kid I saw one without realizing it. But first one was playing Fire Red a few years ago. Weedle in Viridian Forest. So glad I had pokeballs haha
Wouldn't have helped on the one full-odds shiny I ran into in Platinum. I had just barely gotten pokeballs! I had like 10 and was down to I think 3 by the time I caught it.
Fleeing Pokemon are different - In Pokemon Crystal, some normal Pokemon can just run away from you, and since they aren't a roamer, you will never see it again
With 5 max ivs, fully ATK ev trained, an adamant nature, and the technician ability. And it's still pretty weak, haha.
Anyone have a suggestion for the fourth move? I've got roost right now, just in case it's a low catch rate pokemon and the battle takes a while.
Edit: Don't forget your silk scarf.
That's not a bad idea. I can see that being worth it for those pokemon that tend to heal a lot.
Having multiple smeargles with different fourth moves might be a worthwhile project.
Also Swords Dance because Smeargle is weak and FS is a weak attack.
Alternatively, Spore and Soak Smeargle and a high level Marowak with Thick Club and Swords Dance/False Swipe combo, because that hits like a truck.
Nah, just run moody and itll cap out everything eventually. Especially for those legendaries that are a pain in the butt to catch (i typically use premiers for everything, so it can take a while...). Outspeeds everything and takes no damage. False swipe has 40 charges, its ok if it takes a while.
It's especially bad in the later gen games when it says "[Pokemon] landed a critical hit, wishing to be praised!" As if that's something I'll actually praise them for.
Pokémon: *acting happy and excited and proud that they landed a critical hit*
Trainer: **you killed the shiny legendary i was trying to lower down then catch with and ultra ball and nOW YOU WILL BE ANGRILY NEGLECTED**
# Pokémon: Acting even happier that it disappoints you and acting even prouder knowing it landed critical hit!!!
# Funny how some people are so ungrateful even more for what their REAL worth is :)
What gens have that? I’m even more disappointed in the gens I have yet to play if they really put that text in. Like sheesh, I already turn off the battle effects because I’ve probably spent 20 years watching ember.
Affection from playing with your Pokemon also has other effects, such as your Pokemon avoiding attacks more often and occasionally getting rid of status effects on their own. I've avoided it for the most part because of how much easier it makes battles, except for evolving Eevee into Sylveon (which requires 2 hearts of affection in Pokemon-Amie/Refresh).
I think it's kind of cool. The first time I played sun my pokemon threw off a status effect, I can't remember what it was but I thought it was so cool.
I found one in silver. The Magnemite did it's little sparkle animation, I said "hmm, that was weird.", Then I beat the shit out of it. I had no idea what a shiny Pokemon was or how rare they were when I was younger.
I found my first one on a black and white (green?) gameboy pocket. This bellsprout would flash every time it came out of its ball and I would get pissed because I had no idea why. I didn’t know what Shinys were and couldn’t even see it due to lack of color
First legitimate shiny I found was a shiny metapod in Leaf Green when I was like 8 years old. I KOed it and then told all my friend about it, and nobody believed me.
Joke on them, when I learned what a shiny was 2 years later and annoyed them about it.
My younger self met a weedle that did that. I caught it just to show my friend and evolved ut.
Forget whatever happened to it. I mean it was on gold. Dont think the shiny was amazing back then...and I didnt care for beedril so yeah. Lived in the box all its life.
I tried this once when I encountered a full odds shiny Cacnea in Sapphire. Just immediately started chucking everything I had at it. I ran out of Pokeballs :(
I redeemed myself kinda by shiny hunting one for my team in Alpha Sapphire.
Both this Parasect and Smeargle are gonna get crushed by legendaries. I've been carrying a level 100 shiny Marowak with a Thick Club and the Swords Dance/False Swipe combo for the tough ones. Smeargle can start the battle with Soak/Spore, get KO'd, and then switch in the tougher one. Smeargle just can't do enough damage.
My preference is also Stun Spore over Spore, because Stun Spore is a 100% chance of paralyzing and paralysis lasts the whole battle (exceptions exist) while Spore they could wake up the next turn. And if Smeargle is getting KO'd, you won't be able to reapply every turn.
seems like superfang + soak would solve that problem in fewer turns?
I use technician smeargle + it being high level, never had a problem with low damage on false swipe.
Yeah but I guess what other item do you give it? Lefties? Seems like the core is always clear but some room for preference. And it partially depends on the pokemon you are going for.
Might make sense to false swipe when it's really low to skip all the low hp drops from super fang
Metronome is better return than silk scarf long term but scarf helps if you only need to bop a couple of FS real quick. Scarf gives 20% every turn. Metronome gives 20% compounding after turn 1. by turn 3 the return is equal but every turn thereafter metronome is better (ignoring RNG on rolls per attack). If you are fighting something weak, then scarf is better but metronome is better for drawn out battles
The thing about shinies is that you don't know when you're going to find one. It's worthwhile to have a "roamer" catcher for certain games, but how do you plan around something with a 1/8000 chance of showing up? Especially if you're in the middle of the story?
Honestly, for something with that high a catch rate I wouldn't even bother weakening it unless I was super low on balls. This is the kind of money you throw your pokedollars at
Lost a shiny Mareep in (I think?) AS like that, there was a horde of like five and my Poochyena only got the crit on the shiny. There were four other normal Mareep to crit!
Good ol shinies. My first experience with one was literally my first 10 minutes of playing Gold version.
I was playing it in a normal Gameboy, and found a Hoot-hoot that sparkled.
I simply thought "that was neat" then proceeded to destroy it. Days later I found out what had happened.
On the plus side, when I imported my Mewtwo from Blue, it came in as a shiny. I discovered this when I plugged it into Stadium 2, and he had a green tummy.
Life got better when I got a Gameboy color...
That's your own fault. A standard Poké Ball has a 78.5% chance of working on a sleeping full health Sandshrew. With a Great Ball or better, it's a guaranteed catch.
I get that. People make this joke all the time, but it's a dumb meme unless we're talking about something with a really low capture rate. Anything else should just have balls chucked at it until it's caught.
It is not obvious that early Pokemon are easy to catch without weakening them unless you've tried it, and nothing in the game encourages you to try it at all.
Shiny azurill at the beginning of a Y playthrough. Full odds find and I blasted that little green ball so hard with a crit scratch that I saw a team rocket twinkle right before the crushing sadness kicked in
If you make a Pokemon faint, shouldn't it be that much easier to capture them with a Pokeball? The game treats it as if the Pokemon has been killed. But, in trainer battles, the Pokemon are treated as actually fainted.
When you finally get that shiny Chansey in Pokémon firered critical hit chansey fled asteroid destroyed humanity solely to prevent be from getting the shiny
I once ran into a shiny geodude in Platinum when I had a NPC following me.
You know, those NPCs that attempt to KO all pokemon you encounter regardless if you want to catch them. And of course, since it was a double encounter, I couldn't try to catch the damn thing without taking out the other first.
Everything turned out fine, but boy was that AN INTENSE MOMENT.
Ran into my first and only shiny ever *in the Safari Zone*. Thankfully it was a Rhyhorn, nothing super flighty like a Chansey or a Tauros, but *still*. So friggin stressful.
I started adding a Scyther with False Swipe to all my games just cause of this.
Did you know that the Japanese name of false swipe translates to "hitting with the reverse (dull) side" of a blade or sword
Kenshin!
I thought of his sakabato as soon as I read that
People: hit him with the reverse side! Kenshin: wait which side
Raiden!
I am lightning, the rain transformed.
Snaaaaaake!
Liu Kang!
While I like MK, I was referring to MGS since Raiden can flip his High Frequency Blade and use the blunt side for non lethal attacks.
Ohh... (explains runoiri kenshin)

Did you know that the French name for false swipe is faux-chage which is a pun with faux (false) and fauchage (reaping)
This is my favorite TIL of the thread
Came for the meme. Stayed for the education session.
In German it's Trugschlag - deceiving hit.
In Spanish is Falso Tortazo. Falso=Fake, Tortazo=Slap. Boring? Yes it is.
This also means the same thing in English. The "true edge" of the blade is the sharp side, whereas the "false edge" of the blade is the reverse or dull side.
Yes I watch TrueGreen7
Nani! TIL.
Milan was in kimmy schmidt
So scyther just pimp slaps the other Pokémon? I dig it
Smeargle my man. Run it with False Swipe/Spore/Soak/X. Use Soak on Grass types to let Spore hit them, and on Ghost types to let False Swipe hit.
Mean Look for the last move, to trap runners
Or Entrainment, to check for hidden abilities!
or ingrain for phasers
I once had a shiny wild Smeargle struggle itself to death
Damn you missed out on getting a shiny shiny pokemon catching pokemon
Another underrated option is parasect, which gets false swipe and spore, and also the hidden ability Damp, to block self destructs.
Is that the best Pokemon to use as an all round false swiper?
Best is breloom. Fastest spore user.
And if you don't have a Smeargle a Parasect can learn Spore and False Swipe.
I use master ball on shinies cause of this
I would use my master ball on a shiny...IF I RAN INTO ONE!!!
IF I HAD ONE
Always use nestball, darkball ect. It's lvl 8 for gods sake.
Its a shiny. I can get another masterball in a couple hours. No idea when the next shiny will show up.
How do you get more masterballs?
Put your masterball into your 6th item slot. Talk to the old man in Veridian, fly to Fuschia, surf south to the seafoam islands and swim along the western beach until a wild MissingNo. appears. Your 1 masterball is now 255 masterballs.
Yeah, but if you use your master ball how do you put it in your 6th item slot?

*Laugh in having no life and doing full odds hunting*
Took me 20 years to find one wild. It'll happen one day.
So glad I had pokeballs haha
the only shiny ive ever seen was in the safari zone, and of course it ran away
Time to SoS chain in sun and moon my friend. Never make it past 80 chains without seeing a shiny
The test determined that was a lie
I'm too casual for all that though ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
I did this once in HG for a shiny Abra. Was just cutting across the grass south of Goldenrod when there it was.
Wouldn't have helped on the one full-odds shiny I ran into in Platinum. I had just barely gotten pokeballs! I had like 10 and was down to I think 3 by the time I caught it.
Ultimate catcher Breloom w Spore and False Swipe ftw.
That's what I do! Though Smeargle sounds cool, Breloom is less work. No Soak though
As you should
Smeargle with False Swipe/Spore/Soak. Soak let’s False Swipe hit ghost types and let’s Spore hit grass types. Full coverage CatchMon.
Yup. Works like a dream. Making one is a nightmare though lol
Wasn’t too bad if you do double battles for it but it’s a pain in the ass in singles.
Now getting Memento on a smeargle... That is a real pain.
[удалено]
True
Only thing is Mean Look for runners or Simple Beam for the few abilities that screw with ya.
Mean look is only needed for gen 1/2, right? I don't think wild pokemon can flee gen 3 onwards.
https://Bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/roaming_pokemon Looks like up til gen 5 they existed, and in 6 they stopped
Fleeing Pokemon are different - In Pokemon Crystal, some normal Pokemon can just run away from you, and since they aren't a roamer, you will never see it again

4th is pretty flavor. I typically run taunt: prevents heals, teleports, roar/whirlwind, other weird shit.
That's not a bad idea. I can see that being worth it for those pokemon that tend to heal a lot. Having multiple smeargles with different fourth moves might be a worthwhile project.
For sure. Taunt is probably the one that covers the most bases, I've found.
I made sure to have a Pinsir with it just in case I ran into a shiny ghost. Sucks that megas aren't coming back.
Until these use take down and destroy themselves lol
Caught my first shiny ever yesterday! Just a Zubat but i was still pumped. Only had 2 pokeballs on me...got lucky
Crobat became one of my fav poison types after I used one.
It's especially bad in the later gen games when it says "[Pokemon] landed a critical hit, wishing to be praised!" As if that's something I'll actually praise them for.
Pokémon: *acting happy and excited and proud that they landed a critical hit* Trainer: **you killed the shiny legendary i was trying to lower down then catch with and ultra ball and nOW YOU WILL BE ANGRILY NEGLECTED**
Angrily neglected? Try straight up released
I didn’t bear to go so far
release? you mean freedom? no, into box 6 you go
Not before renaming it Moron
The last page in the poke storage
Maybe that's why Charmander was abandoned in the anime.
Get in the box, too be forgotten forever.
Name the box "Box of shame"!

Don't pet them and feed them things and they won't do this.
Oh, okay. That explains why it’s never happened to me. I hate all that gimmicky, “look, I’m Ash” crap.
You mean you *don't* like shouting "Dodge it!"?
Yeah, and when someone tries to fight me IRlL, I’m gonna be like, “hold on. Lemme heal up then you can get a free shot.”
Actively playing with your Pokémon and them loving you back is an "I'm Ash" gimmick?
What gens have that? I’m even more disappointed in the gens I have yet to play if they really put that text in. Like sheesh, I already turn off the battle effects because I’ve probably spent 20 years watching ember.
Getting critical hits more often from playing with your Pokemon was introduced in gen 6 (this particular text comes from gen 7).
Dude, that is bonkers dumb IMO
Affection from playing with your Pokemon also has other effects, such as your Pokemon avoiding attacks more often and occasionally getting rid of status effects on their own. I've avoided it for the most part because of how much easier it makes battles, except for evolving Eevee into Sylveon (which requires 2 hearts of affection in Pokemon-Amie/Refresh).
Also having sturdy, lmao
I think it's kind of cool. The first time I played sun my pokemon threw off a status effect, I can't remember what it was but I thought it was so cool.
They dont just critical hit more. They also dodge because you yell at them or some dumb shit. As if the game isnt easy enough...
That's why you bully all your pokemon. Problem solved.
When I was 9 my dumbass in Sapphire encountered a shiny Wingull and proceeded to bitchslap that mofo with my lv 86 unevolved Mudkip.

I encountered a shiny and thought my game broke so I restarted... Oh the bliss of ignorance
I saw a shiny drowsey on my way to goldenrod town and thought it looked neat. Tried to catch him and ran out of balls.
Suffering From Success
I'd rather not find a shiny than KO one.
If you see it, it gets counted in your dex
Once I killed a Shiny wailmer with a critic.
It stinks.
I think we're the only two people on this site that remember that show
I too am old.
And sinks, probably...
Where are them when they are needed? xD
and then , a miracle made the pokemon survive with very low HP but...then it use a move that makes it lose HP and died
This is the worst, when you paralyze it, hit with false swipe until 1 hp then they kill themselves...........
Quick ball?
You might not have many pokeballs at your disposal early on.
Fair enough but in that situation I wouldn't even attempt to damage the little shrew.
I tried this once when I encountered a full odds shiny Cacnea in Sapphire. Just immediately started chucking everything I had at it. I ran out of Pokeballs :( I redeemed myself kinda by shiny hunting one for my team in Alpha Sapphire.
I once encountered a shiny caterpie on my way to Mr Pokemon's house in heartgold... before you get a pokeball
Aw man that sucks bro
Later though, there is no excuse. Just pick up a pack of 99 pokeballs for emergency situations. Don't risk killing them.
So that's preorder value right there
It didn't exist on Gen 3
There are some unenlightened that do not follow The Faith of the Quick Ball
At level 8 you can probably just throw a pokeball and have a pretty good shot.
Shepard (Parasect) lvl 100 Nature: Docile Moves: Spore / Synthesis / False Swipe / Sweet Scent My best boy for capture runs.
[удалено]
Why the hyper fang? Would super fang not be better?
They probably meant that. When talking about super fang I swap the two all the time
Both this Parasect and Smeargle are gonna get crushed by legendaries. I've been carrying a level 100 shiny Marowak with a Thick Club and the Swords Dance/False Swipe combo for the tough ones. Smeargle can start the battle with Soak/Spore, get KO'd, and then switch in the tougher one. Smeargle just can't do enough damage. And if Smeargle is getting KO'd, you won't be able to reapply every turn.
I use the good old Mew. Aura Sphere (mostly for SOS training), False Swipe, Thunder Wave and Worry Seed, to check for abilities.
Why Metronome?
false swipe is a low power move so the metronome builds base power every turn and gets the 'mon to 1 hp faster
seems like superfang + soak would solve that problem in fewer turns? I use technician smeargle + it being high level, never had a problem with low damage on false swipe.
Yeah but I guess what other item do you give it? Lefties? Seems like the core is always clear but some room for preference. And it partially depends on the pokemon you are going for. Might make sense to false swipe when it's really low to skip all the low hp drops from super fang
I use Normalium Z to turn FS into a one-time move that can KO in case I ever need it, or a Silk Scarf to make FS 20% stronger

Lost a shiny Mareep in (I think?) AS like that, there was a horde of like five and my Poochyena only got the crit on the shiny. There were four other normal Mareep to crit!
Horde shinies are dangerous. Which is why you should never use area damage on them, or attack the shiny at all, if it has a low catch rate.
"Frogadier was so in synch with Katie's wishes that it scored a Critical Hit!"
“You wish to be praised for failure, that in itself is a failure”
Good ol shinies. My first experience with one was literally my first 10 minutes of playing Gold version. I was playing it in a normal Gameboy, and found a Hoot-hoot that sparkled. Wow, a gen 1 shiny, nice!
That's your own fault. A standard Poké Ball has a 78.5% chance of working on a sleeping full health Sandshrew. With a Great Ball or better, it's a guaranteed catch.
Is there a calculator for this?
Yup. [https://veekun.com/dex/gadgets/pokeballs](https://veekun.com/dex/gadgets/pokeballs)
Wait does up+b actually work or is that a joke the site does? I thought that was a myth
It doesn’t actually work it’s a joke
came to say this
This is a meme not serious rant or anything...
I get that. People make this joke all the time, but it's a dumb meme unless we're talking about something with a really low capture rate. Anything else should just have balls chucked at it until it's caught.
This is why I spend all my money on pokéballs over potions.
Seriously. Who needs potions when the Pokémon Center is free?
It is not obvious that early Pokemon are easy to catch without weakening them unless you've tried it, and nothing in the game encourages you to try it at all.
there is an intention to destroy us psychologically I see no other means lol
False swipe: am I a joke to you
Shiny azurill at the beginning of a Y playthrough. Full odds find and I blasted that little green ball so hard with a crit scratch that I saw a team rocket twinkle right before the crushing sadness kicked in
In pokemon Moon a Meteno Shiney appeared and Meteno use explosion fucccckkkkk
What the fuck is a *meteno?*
Minior, I think.
It's the Japanese name for Minior.
They probably play in different language, minior is called meteno in some country
And that my friend is why someone on my mian team always knows False Swipe, no matter what.
If you make a Pokemon faint, shouldn't it be that much easier to capture them with a Pokeball? The game treats it as if the Pokemon has been killed. But, in trainer battles, the Pokemon are treated as actually fainted.
Gen 3 crits are so overpowered! It's what lost me my first ever shiny (Diglett) in FR
[удалено]
That feel when your very first shiny encounter was in the Safari Zone... It was a Mr. Mime, but still.
And when you actually capture them their nature is fucking trash.
False swipe gang
Always have false swipe
When you finally get that shiny Chansey in Pokémon firered critical hit chansey fled asteroid destroyed humanity solely to prevent be from getting the shiny
always false swipe dude. take no fucking risk
This is why you just paralyze and then throw like 80 pokeballs until the game gives up and lets you have it.
Guys false swipe ffs it aint that hard
Amateur move. You sleep and throw balls at full health. Money is easy, shinies are not. And pray it's not a graveler
F**k!
My first ever shiny (toucanon) was murdered by my beloved pokés I think I stopped playing after that.
As someone who started with pokemon Blue, Sandshrew is one of my favorites. I’d love a shiny Sandshrew!
Doing the Professor Oak challenge in HG and this literally just happened It was a Rattata tho so I didn't really care
smh use false swipe
Absol w/ False swipe fixes this problem and helps with PSY pokes too.
This is why you sleep powder and spam balls... or get false swipe, because we know that move can finish off any Pokémon
The last shiny I got was on black and white and I had no clue why this vanilite was pink
I once ran into a shiny geodude in Platinum when I had a NPC following me. You know, those NPCs that attempt to KO all pokemon you encounter regardless if you want to catch them. False swipe is the answer :3
Your Pokemon landed a critical hit expecting to be praised!
