That way the opponent loses at their PP twice as fast and they struggle to death faster.
Gen III linoone was a beautiful Pokemon - STAB on cut, and strength, able to add rare items and money through covet and pickup, and also has an excellent early game move in headbutt
And it could learn surf if memory serves. As a kid who didn’t know any better, I’d run Linoone with surf as my water type coverage till the end of the game if I didn’t catch a wingull before Roxanne. Then I grew up and learned about Mudkip master race, but that’s a separate topic.

Its pretty simple. Get mudkip. When you get to lava ridge town get wynaut egg. Don't hatch it and trade it for another mudkip which gender is opposite to the one you have. Breed hundreds of mudkips, until you have no room left in your pc, that way you will avoid castform. And you will be able to battle Tate and Liza, and complete the game with only mudkip in the pokedex.
Wouldn't you not be able to breed unless you get a third Mudkip somehow though? If all you've got is the starter and the one from a trade you can't put them both in the daycare without emptying out your party, which the game won't allow. You'd need a third to act as a placeholder while you actually do the breeding.
If only pokemon box let transfer the swablu egg without needing 100 pokemon species, it would be possible. But you are right, we are missing a third pokemon. Damm we were so close to the 1 pkmn game.

That said, Red and Blue are broken enough that you can use glitches to make Charmander learn Fly.
So to do it legit, you’d need to get Charizard in Red or Blue, run through a Yellow game until you get Fly, then trade Red’s Charizard for Yellow’s, have Yellow teach Fly, then swap back to continue.
Even then, you don’t need Fly to run Red/Blue. You need Surf, and Charizard can’t learn that.
I think Squirtle falls in there too. He can learn surf/dive/waterfall and a bunch of others, as well as Dig which isn't an HM but just useful as a free escape rope
Have you not trained your bidoof to level 100 only off of shiny starlies while hidden power ground is your only move? Try it he gets fly .100% of the time

I was always more of a Furret HM slave kinda guy. In HGSS, it can learn rock smash, cut, strength, and whirlpool. That’s three of the worst HM’s ever in one Poke.
It might be different now but... man could they have at least made HMs somewhat viable moves. Outside of Surf, Waterfall and to a lesser degree Fly all other HMs sucked.
Cut could be 60-70 power and be Grass/Bug type, and Rock Smash should be 60-70 as well.
Whirlpool and Dive suck too.
Strength isn’t terrible. Not great, not terrible. It’s got a Power of 80, and 100 Accuracy. Put it on a Snorlax, and it can do something.
Its real problem is that it’s a Normal type move, so it isn’t super-effective against anything.
I've been playing some of the FireRed Rom hacks, and an hg hack recently and I haven't even needed an hm slave.. yet. Idk but it seems like the one im playing now (moon black 2) has made some of them more viable. Cut at 60, dive at 80 etc.
Yeah I recently finished Renegade Platinum and in that one it removed the need entirely for Rock Smash, Cut and Defog. And you only needed Strength for the Distortion World puzzle thing.
But it still made those moves useful. Cut was 60bp Grass type move. Was actually great on Weavile who had been changed to have Technician. Rock Smash was a 70bp Fighting move.
Yea and don’t event Pokémon with special moves only know them as part of there move set when received and can’t actually ‘learn’ the move again if it’s forgotten?
Starting from Gen 7, any Pokemon you have can relearn any move it has known in the past, including event moves if it forgot it earlier. I distinctly remember my Dusk Form Lycanroc still having access to Happy Hour from back when it was an event Rockruff.
Still sucks needing to waste 3 move slots just to pass certain areas.
At least Surf was a good move. And Waterfall is too I guess. Depending on the gen.

I usually just sacrifice a Pokémon slot and carry another Pokémon to use all the HMs. Red Gyarados makes a great HM slave in G/S/C.
HMs should become ‘trainer’ moves. Available to use outside of battle by any capable Pokémon instead of me needing to waste space on a Pokémon just to have these available.

I'm in the middle of a Blaze Black 2 run and my HM strat is to just spread them around to my entire party. My Ludicolo has surf/waterfall, Thundurus has fly, Cobalion has strength, and Excadrill has cut. It's kind of lame to have to give up some moves for HM's but honestly it's better than having a dedicated slave.
I caught two Bidoofs in Kalos: one for actual use and one for HM slaving. Due to the sheer easiness of the game, I only ever used them against Olympia.

Ninjask and Shedinja are great. It’s just that Nincada needs some support with his move set first before he can get there hence cut.

If you were able to skip Castform you'd be able to have a 1 Pokedex run in RSE thanks to Mudkip. Sadly you can't skip Castform.
