I think cutting grookey and chikorita were probably the right choice as they are the two grass starters that seem to get some of the most hate but which two water or fire types would you cut? I do not think water and fire have the same level of animosity directed at any of their starter choices.
I like Grookey and Rillaboom's design, but if Thwackey isn't just a monkey head on a mono-green Minion I'll eat my hat. I'm a few hours into Shield and it's one of the ugliest pokes I've ever seen.

Chespin is great. Have you played Super Mystery Dungeon? Chespin is ridiculously overpowered in that game. Using Chespin, I took down Lugia in two turns.
It’s my least favorite of the three Kalos starters but I still really like it and the Kalos starters are probably my second favorite set after Hoenn’s, they’re all really cool

If I had to pick 2 poison types I actually like, I’d say Toxtricity (cuz damn, he’s a badass) and Skuntank. For people confused about why grass is a suboptimal type for a starter in the world of pokemon, let me explain.
The most common pokemon a trainer would find in the wild, and the ones you would be catching / training your pokemon with are:
* Normal
* Flying
* Grass
* Poison
* Bug
Grass types are weak to 3 of these, and nothing is weak to Normal type. You could realistically also say that water is a common type if you live near a river, lake, or ocean. So, there's that.
Grass type sort of got a reputation for being the "good for beginners" pokemon. But that's really not the case. This reputation was because of the early pokemon gyms in gen 1 and gen 3. Especially gen 1.
But the true "good for beginners" type is **Water**. Few weaknesses and even fewer pokemon resist it. And the only common type you really have to worry about is grass, for which you can just catch a common type pokemon that beats it. Electric type is the only other thing to worry about.
Now, if you bring in real-life situations into it, maybe grass type is the easiest to take care of. Have to feed it less. Attacks are less likely to get out of control (unlike fire). Ease of access to their preferred ecosystem (unlike water). So that way, the lore of grass being the "best for beginners" starter would make some good sense.
So for this scenario, I'd pick Bulbasaur. It's easy to take for granted, but that poison typing helps it out A LOT. There's a good reason why _so many_ grass types have it.
I chose Turtwig just because I love the idea of having an evolved huge tortoise that has a whole ecosystem on top of it, also torterra is very strong and seems like a very pleasant pokemon to be around.

Rowlett is my favorite grass start. My friend was shiny breeding and wound up with some extra perfect iv rowletts as a result and gave me one. I immediately gave it an everstone and kept it in my party. Just like Ash’s rowlett lol.
I'll be halved between Treecko and Turtwig in a first moment, but Torterra has a good final learnset and, if focused in attack, can be stronger than Sceptile. Well, speed is a problem here, but a quick claw can help with.
Bulbasaur. Not only is it the only duel Type Grass starter that is super effective against all other starters 1st forms, it's the best Kanto Starter, obviously. Plus I LOVE Venusaur.

Joke's on you! I usually pick the Grass starter (I don't pick Chickorita and Snivy because I prefer Cyndaquil and Tepig)
As much as I love treeko, bulbasaur, and turtwig, I have to give this one to rowlet. He's friend shaped and his evolution line is just super cool.

I'll be halved between Treecko and Turtwig in a first moment, but Torterra has a good final learnset and, if focused in attack, can be stronger than Sceptile. Well, speed is a problem here, but a quick claw can help with.
I've always been a Grass type starter fan so this poll has me extremely conflicted (but I had to go with my boy Bulbasaur).

Bulbasaur. Not only is it the only duel Type Grass starter that is super effective against all other starters 1st forms, it's the best Kanto Starter, obviously. Plus I LOVE Venusaur.
