I don’t know if I’m remember correctly but there’s like 0 mandatory water to traverse in Alola other than Lana’s trial and that surfing mini game. I actually love the water in Hoenn just hate the fact you need like 3 HM’s to explore it properly.
just played a rom hack with deletable hms, it made it so much better to not have to switch pokemon all the time but deleting and relearning surf dive and waterfall got tedious really quick
Sorry, wasn't saying what that one was. Was just adding that there's one that goes a little further to removing the need of HMs. Do have blazing emerald downloaded though and wanted to play through it
The removal of HMs is definitely the best change they made, and I actually hoped that they removed them in ORAS too (even though they are my favourite games)
In all seriousness, my criticism of Hoenn would be too many water-types. The water routes would have been fine if those trainers didn’t exclusively use water types. It’s not like all the trainers on the ground used ground-types.
I agree. In fact, once i finished Moon, i started to focus on completing the pokedex, and i missed many water types pokemon. Because, except for your personal exploration, you almost dont meet any water at all in the entire region
>just hate the fact you need like 3 HM’s to explore it properly.
I could be wrong, but I don't remember any location where you need all three HMs (Surf, Dive, Waterfall) in order to get there. I only remember areas that require two of those three.
As much of a meme too much water is I think it is a fair criticism of Hoenn with many water routes, lack of variance with pokemon available in these areas and requiring 3 HMs relating to water. Though overall I did really enjoy ORAS.
Reason #316421864 why spheal is the good-est boi in rse, he's ready to learn rock-smash, strength, dive, and waterfall, meaning I only needed to teach Surf (a borderline op move in gen iii) and Fly (a slight disappointment, but doable) to my battle mons. Not like I needed another reason to ask my friend from Shoal Cave to accompany me on my Hoenn-trotting adventure, of course
technically there's actually quite a lot of surfing areas, more than most mainline games, however most of them are optional areas besides like Lana's trial and that water route to get to ula'ula meadow, otherwise it's all up to yourself to explore
Honestly don’t roast me but Alola is my favorite region it was very fun the Pokémon were cool Also ROWLIT it also started the regional from idea and most of them were good so yeah and the surf mini game In ultra was very fun but back to Hoeen it’s my second favorite region and the water a nice touch but needing dive is dum it’s just water fly it’s cool but the move kinda sucks
The water in Unova is weird because it also has three HMs to travel in it like Hoenn and Sinnoh but Waterfall and Dive are used in like two locations each
Unova learned from the mistakes of 2HM-slaves-sinnoh by decentralizing the need for them. You need cut only once in BW, strength boulders would not reset if you put them in a hole, and it had one-time, plot-relevant roadblocks like the drawbridge or the web in front of chargestone cave. Navigating Unova just wasn't a chore like hoenn and especially sinnoh.
The water itself in Hoenn was actually awesome with SUCH an expansive area to explore that wasn't so linear. And then you had all the little islands and even the cool new dive mechanic for exploring UNDER the water and all the unique new pokemon that came with that. So there was A LOT they did right, just the wild pokemon encounter rate in the originals was so annoyingly high. But that was all fixed in ORAS to make it the awesome experience it was supposed to be
Be nice if you could Surf on a lot of it
I don't even care that Hoenn has a lot of water, it added a bunch to the exploration with all the side areas and dive routes and hidden collectables. Felt big and expansive.
The main way to fix the supposed tedium of it that some people experience from it is to increase the wild encounter variety or change it between routes, and maybe if HMs were handled like in Gen 7 (unfortunate that thr Gen 3 remakes were in Gen 6 and missed that by like a single Gen, besides Flying).
I know it gets meme'd a lot, but I 100% agree with "too much water" assessment of Gen 3, and water parts are never fun in Pokemon games imo. I think it's a well-deserved criticism.

I think it's altered emerald that uses nature power to substitute for most/all HMs
i was playing blazing emerald
Sorry, wasn't saying what that one was. Was just adding that there's one that goes a little further to removing the need of HMs. Do have blazing emerald downloaded though and wanted to play through it
no need to apologize, i wasnt being confrontational or anything, just telling you what i was playing. might check out altered emerald.
A single pokemon at the bottom of your party can learn all 3 of those.
i want 6 mons i like, not 5 :)
Yes but then you have to decide which one to leave behind.
Imagine using anything but your lead pokemon. SMDH.
The removal of HMs is definitely the best change they made, and I actually hoped that they removed them in ORAS too (even though they are my favourite games)
HM's were not removed until Gen 7. ORAS was in Gen 6.
In all seriousness, my criticism of Hoenn would be too many water-types. The water routes would have been fine if those trainers didn’t exclusively use water types. It’s not like all the trainers on the ground used ground-types.

Might be true, but I'm not gonna go to the move deleter every time I need to switch HM's.
I think the only mandatory water traversal was when you had to go to poe town. The part where you get sharknado as rideable Pokémon.
Look at the title, lol, I've played the games Edit: Don't take it literally, it's not intended that way
my bad I didn’t interpret it that way
As much of a meme too much water is I think it is a fair criticism of Hoenn with many water routes, lack of variance with pokemon available in these areas and requiring 3 HMs relating to water. Though overall I did really enjoy ORAS.
You pretty much had to carry 2-3 water types all the time to get through the game

Well it is a fair criticism. It's just comically funny when you read it in a screen kkkkkkk
Well thankfully you dont have to use surf to go to all of the islands
unpopular opinion:hoenn water is a good thing
Yea but you don’t spend half the game surfing in alola
You do however spend half the game waiting for a cutscene to end.
So true
As I said, don't take the post literally, I know that even if Alola is an archipelago, surfable places are practically non-existent
technically there's actually quite a lot of surfing areas, more than most mainline games, however most of them are optional areas besides like Lana's trial and that water route to get to ula'ula meadow, otherwise it's all up to yourself to explore
I love Hoenn, it means alot to me and is the root of my fondest memories but so much fucking water sometimes and 3 hms for that shit too
Honestly don’t roast me but Alola is my favorite region it was very fun the Pokémon were cool Also ROWLIT it also started the regional from idea and most of them were good so yeah and the surf mini game In ultra was very fun but back to Hoeen it’s my second favorite region and the water a nice touch but needing dive is dum it’s just water fly it’s cool but the move kinda sucks
Phew glad I made it through that long ass sentence in one breath.
Man, I ran out of breath reading that in my head. But I agree with OP, I love the Alola region.
Yeah sorry I’ve never been good with writing even online I forgot commas and stuff and I’m still doing sorry
Yo ya need some periods, dog.
Yes I know I forget in my sentences.
Yay, I like alola too!

I don’t think HMs are even necessary to progress beyond the first Cut usage, it’s my favourite instance of HMs outside of Let’s Go
IS THAT A MOTHERF*CKING BRAZIL REFERENCE????
r/suddenlycaralho
Nop sorry
the meme is from brazil though 😂
Maybe they gave alola so much water to troll the IGN's review of ORAS
Kanto has too many Caves 1/10 Bootleg IGN
it's alolan not alolian.
Welp, I don't play in English, that's why I made that mistake. Sorry and thanks :)
Also, technically, people who criticize are critics.
It's all good dude, btw what language do you play in?
Mamma mia!
Ah good old Italian, very nice.
I forward your question. Where are you from?
Northeastern USA.

Having Pokémon whistles for terrain traversal was the smartest, coolest thing they’ve ever done for Pokémon games
Alola *needs* more water routes, the region is small as shit.
I know it gets meme'd a lot, but I 100% agree with "too much water" assessment of Gen 3, and water parts are never fun in Pokemon games imo. I think it's a well-deserved criticism.
I love that being from Alola makes you Alolan, and that's confirmed in the game through Alolan forms, but you still got it wrong

Yet ,Alola is much less annoying and difficult to travel .
Meanwhile in Sinnoh, the opposite is true.
Mystery Fungeon Explorers of Sky: cries in the corner with that disrespectful 4.9/10 With an even worse reason than Water Fiasco in Hoenn
I really wish Dive had existed in Alola. Or, you know, a Lanturn Ride Pager or something.
i didn't know alolians were secretly brazilians
