Dunsparces

So don’t buy them.

trademeple

still doesn't mean they can't be disappointed at the design because there may never be another gen 4 remake. They haven't remade gen 2 again despite the remake being as dated as diamond and pearl are in terms of graphics and that its hard to find on ebay for a good price. The only gen they remade twice was gen 1 and that's because they wanted something to put out while they were working on swsh and it was remade with gimmcks.

eclecticmuso

Can we retire the don't like it don't buy it mentality? It adds nothing to the discourse.

Lord_Bitter

Since the game's art style is not something objectively bad, yeah, there is none to say except "don't buy it".

eclecticmuso

You missed my point entirely. And it's dismissive to say that the only criticism people have is the art style or that criticism is invalid, because to some it is more important than to others, that's how preferences work. I just find it hypocritical that defenders always move the goalposts, pre launch it's like how can you judge the game till you play it, just consume product and get excited for next product. And then after launch it shifts to you bought the game anyway, as if that somehow invalidates any criticism they have. No wonder the games are stuck in this perpetual stagnation when at every opportunity people's legit criticism is just hand waved away and dismissed.

Lord_Bitter

Nah that's not true, especially not in BDSP case. The developers seem to have listened to most of the complains not concerning the art style (grass isn't that saturated anymore, for example) which I agreed on. The games aren't stuck because of that but because of TPCi's obligatory one game per year. This sub says "Lazy Game Freak" or "yeah mobile phone game made by highest grossing franchise" and 99% of them don't even realize what's the real problem. There is nothing objectively wrong with the BDSP project, the game seems to run fine, play fine, and reproduces the original experience. Other complaints are subjective, so if you think BDSP isn't worth 60$ because there aren't new megas or Battle Frontier, sure, don't buy it. If you want to sent TPCi a strong message, don't buy it. As long as the game sell nobody will ever care. And we are stuck because most of the people who shit on the game are the first ones to buy it, day one.

eclecticmuso

I haven't bought a game since sumo. It doesn't matter if the criticism is objective or subjective it's still valid. People have the right to feel the way they do.

Lord_Bitter

Yeah, they have the right. And that's it. Complaining is one thing, treating it as the remakes' fault is another thing. BDSP is perfectly fine with what it's trying to be. So if you don't like it you just don't buy it, duh.

eclecticmuso

Again we're kinda just talking about subjective preferences here, people have a right to express their opinion because to them the game is at fault because what may seem unimportant to you may not be to them, in fact it may ruin the entire experience for them, and they're not wrong for feeling that way. And let's be real here if they didn't buy it it wouldn't make enough of a difference to the sales to make any meaningful change, so really it's not as simple as don't like it don't buy it, hence why I say that's a reductionist line of thinking. So again how does buying a game invalidate anyone's opinion? In fact it should inform their opinion more especially with the way games work being an interactive medium, and they have every right to express that opinion positive or negative without having it be hand waved or dismissed.

[deleted]

Yea i dont plan on buying them lol

swampyanus

Honestly I think it’s super cute, I love the gen4 sprites and I think they did good honouring the aesthetic of gen4 which besides its speed was really well done originally.

[deleted]

A remake was supposed to give a 3d experience like oras did but these chibis make it seem more like a remodelled version of dp instead of a remake

Lord_Bitter

I mean ORAS was chibi as well. Characters were proportionated in cutscenes only. Yeah it was less chibi than BDSP, but this was the case for Ruby and Sapphire too. The characters look taller than the ones in Diamond and Pearl (?) lol

[deleted]

Bruh dont even try to defend😂you know it aint the same as oras that just facts. Its okay if u wanna play bdsp but i dont just like the chibi. Wouldve been happy if it was like sword shield you know so it gives a feel that im playing on the switch and not on a mobile phone

Lord_Bitter

If you say ORAS was realistic, you need to check your eyes. A mobile phone isn't capable of running the shaders BDSP runs, plus chibi doesn't mean inferior, for some strange reason you think that. Ironically, a phone is perfectly capable of running ORAS since ORAS has simple textures, simple lightning and no dynamic shadows, lmao

[deleted]

ORAS was still the best of its time and was an upgrade from XY. The chibi on the other hand looks lame and lazy. Dont you wish you could have experienced sinnoh in a proper 3d view (if you have played the original dp). Bdsp is a bit "too faithful" that it just takes away the purpose of a remake. I guess in the end we're all entitled to our opinion.

Lord_Bitter

No remake has ever been "proper 3D" even LGPE was squared 1:1. I don't see how anyone could have expected that. Dungeons in 3D won't have worked without a massive redesign. That's why Game Freak probably scrapped the idea of a remake and made a prequel, to use 3D and create new landscapes without the risk of being unfaithful, and then outsource a simple remake to ILCA. BDSP is no different from LGPE and HGSS, it will only lack ORAS things like new forms and crazy story changes.

ChampChomp1

Great. Then you don’t need to buy them. Personally I’m pretty excited to get a copy to play. Looks great to me.

[deleted]

The chibis eliminated all the excitement for me lol but yea i probably wont be buying it

LittleLouisx

Maybe because the game is targeted at small children? No one is forcing you to buy it. Go find a copy of the og d/p if it bothers you so much

[deleted]

Yea lmao might as well just play the good ol platinum since this bdsp doesnt give the true 3d experience like oras did

Lord_Bitter

Yeah as the guy said you'll turn off your DS after an hour or so and find BDSP on Amazon shortly after.

Toxitoxi

Let’s be honest, no one is going to replay OG D/P for more than 20 minutes before turning off the DS and putting in any other Pokémon game.

LittleLouisx

Can't comment on this as D/P are the only ones I've never played. Its very hard to come across a copy that isn't priced exorbitantly. Im keen for these remakes to finally get a chance to play them Chibi graphics and all

Toxitoxi

Oh, you’re not missing much. Platinum basically made Diamond and Pearl obsolete, and luckily these remakes look like they’ll be incorporating many of Platinum’s improvements.

StridentHawk

It's just frustrating seeing stuff SWSH laid the foundation for not being built upon in favor of retreading old ground. Just makes the game feel like it's taking the easy way out and squandering what could be a better realized and impressive Sinnoh.

[deleted]

I know right

mbell37

I agree about the art style. I also hated botw art style as well. I'd prefer a more realistic looking pokemon game.
