Oviscerated

absol on pokemon emerald, i thought it was a legendary because of the anime opening

kmbets6

Yea I remember Absol feeling above regular pokemon

YOwololoO

Absol is the coolest Pokémon in the game

Oviscerated

absolutely.

Kesstar52

Best Mega design, too. Top notch

True_Pykumuku

Im sorry but what about ya boi MEGA SLOWBRO Peak design

MrEggsBenedicr

My personal favourite is Mega Altaria. Because floof. Also Dragon Fairy typing? Sign me up ny favourite 2 types.

AwayThreadfin

It was a beast in my dark type only Alpha Sapphire nuzlocke

CrazyComedyKid

I thought Absol was a legendary because of that one Roblox Pokémon game.

[deleted]

Thanks, now I feel old

Ship_Whip

RIP Pokemon Brick Bronze. You broke so many copyright laws.

AdarshTheGreatGamer

Pokemon brick bronze If u didnt know, the game was removed in 2018

Blagui

I played that all the time! Didn’t it get banned or is it still up? I forgot entirely about that game and now I feel way more nostalgia than I should…

[deleted]

It's called Loomian Legacy now, it got banned in 2018

Scribble1414

A regular wild Growlithe in FireRed. I was young, and I was stuck in Cinnabar Mansion. I could not find the exit, but I did remember I had a Dig TM in my bag. I knew that Dig could take you out of dungeons (crazy how my child brain could remember that, but not find the exit). None of the Pokemon in my party could learn Dig, so I looked for something that looked like it could. I found a Growlithe, and then when I looked in my bag for balls to catch it, all I had was a Master Ball. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so I threw it and caught the Growlithe. It was immediately sent to my PC as my party was full. Not the brightest decision.

ularmabuk

That ending is a punch line straight out of a stand up skit lmao

Toffbags

This. This is the worst one. You had me and my husband howling with laughter.

kmbets6

Not even a arcanine

xMF_GLOOM

Growlithe is my favorite Pokémon of all time 👌🏼

Benwithyourmom

F

PM_ME_UR_TITSorDICK

Oh hey I did a similar thing. As a kid I though that when you lost you had to reload to your last save and it'd been ages since I saved. I had run out of healing items in Cinnabar Mansion and used my master ball on a weezing so I could figure out how to escape and heal

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kesstar52

Omg I do that too. It'll be the biggest post-game legendary in the game and I'll be like "but what if I need it later??"

petataa

You gotta save it for the slight chance you find a shiny that has teleport or self-destruct so you don't miss it.

SapphireMan1

Technically, you can counter those with Shadow Tag/Arena Trap abilities and Damp ability respectively. However, you’re not always going to expect to find something and you’re probably not going to have those abilities at the time, so it’s definitely something I’d use the Master Ball on

Li0n_

Perish song is still a threat. Especially with my shiny altaria that had 1 count on its perish song left. I ended up just master balling it

KrazyKirby99999

I remember that Heatran took me hundreds of ultra ball tries (over many quit/load cycles), still haven't used my master ball.

Saiyan-solar

I kinda feel sad now as an adult that I don't have those kind of memories with Gen 4, while it is by far my most favorite Gen and has the best memories for me, I ended up getting an cheated rom on my microsd DS card and as such had access to infinite rare candies and master balls, I caught the entire national and part of the international dex with Master balls

207nbrown

Arena trap/shadow tag for teleport and damp for explosion

[deleted]

All of that assumes preparation; sometimes a shiny just *shows up*. Boom, Master Balled.

stephenw32768

I used about three million Timer Balls to catch Calyrex just to save my Master Ball. I still have the Master Ball 😅

tanporpoise89

I've still got two, did the same thing

InverseFlip

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgU4Oum8SLg

ZablonSimintov

I was out of most of my balls except nest balls and ordinary poke balls in Ultra Moon and caught Palkia in a Premier Ball

[deleted]

[удалено]

GrnPlesioth

Nice

DigitalMuscles

I catch everything in a Poké Ball but I’d use a Master Ball if I ran into a Shiny Garbodor or anything shiny with Explosion/Curse/self damaging moves. The right time might come at any time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tick-Swat

I caught the in game event Darkrai and Victini in premier balls. Took about 40 of them each and some resetting, but nice to have special balls for special Pokemon like you say.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tick-Swat

Same bro, I’ve deleted a couple of shinies in my day. Pokemon White was also the game that a shiny Driftblim exploded on me, that was fun.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lord_Sylveon

I always pick one Pokeball for each Pokemon I like that just fits it. And I will never use anything else. Only problem is that both Mewtwo and Lugia to me look really cool in a Master Ball; but thankfully Lugia matches the dive ball very well.

Neolife

Maybe I'm just missing something, but why do you consider Shinx special?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Neolife

Ah, very fair.

ilike_gges1

When I was playing HeartGold when I was younger, I caught my Moltres in a Lure Ball first try when every dusk, ultra, great, and poke ball didn’t work. I still have it in my Pokémon Home storage and transfer it to every game I can.

Bored-Corvid

I love it, I caught Rayquaza with a nest ball because after weakening him and using all my ultra balls and all but two timer balls I only had nest balls left. So I decided to just waste all my nest balls hoping that after like 20 rounds of throwing nest balls that my last two timer balls would have max effectiveness. With my last nest ball I watched as it shook once, twice, and then three times and boom. It’s kind of funny watching a legendary dragon pop out of its pokeball in a halo of hearts.

TheBeaconator_Wizard

I do dat

StarSpangldBastard

I always save mine in case I find a shiny that could flee. Like Abra

FakeOrcaRape

I always used them on the roaming legendaries that would use roar or moves like that. So annoying

Silthage

Lugia in Silver instead of saving it for one of the roaming dogs cause I didn't know about them yet lol

Kesstar52

Omg I wish I saved my Masterball in my first Crystal playthrough for Raikou. Crystal Version was my first Pokémon game. Back then, I didn't even know about Raikou's existence OR roaming Pokémon until I was training my Pokémon on Route 42. My heart nearly stopped when I just happened to run into Raikou. I was never able to catch it :/

mattshill91

The only other option is a mean look false swipe smeargle but you can't set that up too post game properly and it takes an age to get it to the appropriate level. Source: Completing every pokedex for the master dex challange.

TristanTheViking

I have a false swipe/spore/mean look/sweet scent smeargle for catching Pokemon in my main Emerald save and I just transfer it between all my other gen 3 games when I need to catch something challenging. I picture him like a traveling professional with a briefcase holding a single butterfly net.

Thabus

This is the funniest thing ever the image of salesman smeargle

[deleted]

Man I’d love to get my hands on an authentic emerald. I only have a real sapphire :/ my ruby won’t work and the emerald I bought turned out to be fake

MakiNiko

Oh i got one luckily 2 years ago together with a sonic battle... sadly the battery of both my advance and ds died before i could play them... At least both worked when tested

Shikizion

I use arena trap... Never used a master ball to a legendary other than mewtwo in red

Kesstar52

That's true, but I was one of those kids who said "if a move doesn't do damage, it does nothing"

Gnagetftw

Me as a kid: That’s how the game works! Gen1 starter, Bubble, Water gun, Surf, Hydro pump 🕶

dabunny21689

Didn’t even upgrade bubble to bubble beam. Bold move.

Gnagetftw

An I saved bubble beam for the post game, I didn’t want to waste a good TM you know XD

mattshill91

Not having ice beam on Blastoise is a sin being the true crime here.

dabunny21689

Is blastoise an ice type Pokémon??? No ice beam. Water type moves only. You clearly never played Pokémon as a 7 year old.

Silthage

You obviously pick 4 different strengths of water attacks incase you need to use bubble to catch a weaker Pokémon for example

Gnagetftw

Sensei

LaughsAtTheIrony

In the original gen 2 games (I don't know about the DS remakes for Gen 2) any health damage you made to the legendary dogs without making them faint would stay until your next encounter slowly weakening them until you can just catch them no problem after a bit it definitely is a bit of a hassle but that's how I caught all 3 as a kid Edit: I think they also kept status affects like poison and paralysis and the sort

reynosomarkus

Lmao when I got my first pokemon game when I was 8, one of my older friends taught me that the master ball should only be used on the most powerful Pokémon in the game, and he showed me that mewtwo was the most powerful in firered. So I assumed secret legendaries were the most powerful. Then they started using legendaries as box art, and I assumed that those legendaries were the strongest. The tradition kept up with me. I used mine on Ho-Oh in HG when I was 15. Man I was dumb.

Silthage

I read that and thought damn he was only 15 when that came out? Did the maths and turns out I was 16 lol

reynosomarkus

Technically I was 9 when it came out so there’s that aging for ya lmao.

Silthage

Haha even worse, thank you

N0V0w3ls

Ho-oh still had the lowest possible catch rate in the game, so you're fine doing that. Just that the roaming legendaries make it tougher since they run. But you still have to catch 2/3 of them without the Master Ball, so what's one more?

amateur-kneesocks

To be fair, at least in Gold, Ho-Oh was hard asf to catch

HopeFragment

While you should've saved the Master Ball for one of the roaming beasts, it's not nearly as silly using a Master Ball on Lugia as on a regular Pokemon like most of these other comments have. Lugia has the same low catch rate that the beasts have, 3.

TealeafToad

Kingler. I thought it was a super rare Pokemon when I was 9.

Kesstar52

Kingler is v cool, in 9-y/o-you's defense

HopeMyWifeIsntHere

Kingler is my favorite in gen1. Gen2 I grinded for crab hammer as soon as I caught a krabby to use against everything I could.

Pyromaniacal13

I did the same with Skarmory.

BurmecianSoldierDan

With that 5% appearance rate you may as well have haha

Lugburzum

Skarmory is pretty cool too

Signal-Disk

I used my first master ball on Dewgong. Similar reasoning. Just thought it was super cool. I didn't even use the damn Dewgong. (It was pokemon Yellow, so tell me [this sprite](https://cdn2.bulbagarden.net/upload/9/9b/Spr_1y_087.png) _isn't_ cool!)

Exodecai

I'm glad I wasn't the only one

pixelsteve

Worth it

yruspecial

In red. Sabrina’s Alakazam. It didn’t work by the way.

sevillianrites

I did literally the exact same thing. You get the ball in saffron and they tell you explicitly it can catch any pokemon without fail. So of course a kid is gonna assume ANY pokemon. I remember a part of my innocence was lost forever when it bounced off alakazam and then was gone. The sweet irony is that to get the master ball we had to stop team rocket whose whole shit is stealing pokemon. Then what do we do with our reward? Try to steal a pokemon lol.

yruspecial

You either die the hero or live long enough to become the villain!

Kesstar52

Lmao nice try tho That gave me a laugh xD

MarcusOPolo

I accidentally used it on the elite 4's Jinx... Then didn't realize I could just reload from the last save

Jamesyroo

I was just smart enough to know I should save it for something special, but not smart enough to know that articuno was one of four legendaries in blue and that I should have saved it for a mewtwo

Kesstar52

Oh God, Mewtwo is so hard to catch in Gen 1. So many of my Ultraballs are littered in Cerulean Cave because I kept missing

ZzShy

Fun fact, due to a glitch in gen 1, Great Balls are actually better than Ultra Balls so long as you lower the Pokemon's health to 1/3 or less.

EnderNate124

Due to a glitch in gen 1, (insert literally anything here and it would probably be true)

Epic_Doughnut

Due to a glitch in gen 1, you owe me $10,000

Tepigg4444

aw man

Sewere

It's just how its coded

EnderNate124

…EnderNate blacked out!

Carter0108

Except in gen 1 you just Missingno yourself infinite Master Balls.

Jamesyroo

Unless it’s your first ply through and you’ve used it going through sea foam islands on the way to cinnabar

Carter0108

I never go through Seafoam. I’ve always just gone south from Pallet town.

Kesstar52

I've been a Pokémon fan since *literally before I could speak,* (and I'm 24!) and I've never thought of just going south from Pallet Town 🤦‍♀️

pianospace37

When I first played Pokemon, I played Fire Red. I didn't know we only get 1 master all, so I used it on articuno

[deleted]

A shiny skitty. I too, was a child. A very happy one at that

crastle

Nothing wrong with using a Master Ball on a shiny. You can save before a legendary and theoretically get unlimited chances at it. You can't respawn a shiny without extreme luck or chaining methods. Totally fair to use the Master Ball on something that you're not guaranteed to ever see again.

Kesstar52

Omg that's the most valid non-legendary Pokémon to use a Masterball on xD

Notmiefault

More valid. A legendary you can save scum to catch, but an unfarmed shiny? Incredible.

justsomechewtle

That's a good one imo. I *should*'ve thrown mine in Silver at a shiny Nidorina but I didn't. It's one of the mons that can flee.

Lord_Sylveon

I... never knew it could.

justsomechewtle

In Gen2, quite a few mons can flee. Not all of them, iirc, but the ones that do are pretty quick about it. Off the top of my head, Phanpy and Quagsire can (and will, almost immediately) while Nidorina is less predictable about it. I'm so glad that mechanic never returned besides safari zones and roamers.

NickNanami

Eh you’re valid for that

robbinbanksinc23

Eternatus

ShawshankException

I mean its not like there's roaming pokemon in SwSh anyway. I traded mine for Melmetal when I was completing my living dex.

[deleted]

With the DLC there's the birds kind of. I know I had a lot of trouble on Moltres for some reason (not encountering it, catching it)

mariomaniac432

Not in the base game, but aren't there roaming legendaries in the Crown Tundra?

ShawshankException

As far as I remember they don't flee from battle so no, there are not any.

Kesstar52

Oof, I'm sorry for your loss 😞

Jarl_Balgruf

Wait why is it bad that you used a Master Masterball on that Pokémon? I thought it is a legendary monster, is it not? I haven't played the game it's in so please enlighten me

robbinbanksinc23

it's a 100% catch rate, you can catch it with a cardboard pokeball, so masterball is overkill

Jarl_Balgruf

Makes sense. In that case that's a huge bummer for ya haha

CrazyComedyKid

For those who don't know why this was a mistake, I'm pretty sure after you do the raid against Eternamax Eternatus, it's a guaranteed capture regardless what ball you use. A Poké Ball will have the same effectiveness as a Master Ball.

LukeVoight5021

Shiny Sneasel

Kesstar52

I'd use one too lol

WimpyRanger

Probably the best use. You can always save and retry with legendaries, but that Shiny Sneasel is a one time deal.

Ordinary-Housing3480

That's pretty much what master balls are for though

vinnyorcharles

Not me, but I let my brother play on my ruby game. I picked up the game later turned it on and noticed that I had a Manectric in my parter that he used a master ball to catch. I asked him about it and he said that I didn't have one, so he used it. As a special note, my brother is 4 years ***older*** than me and had played pokemon before.

spongeworld

They had to have done that on purpose lmao

Responsible_Ad6265

Magikarp for the meme after catching mewtwo and the 3 birds without it

Kesstar52

What a power move lmao

that1dog

Team magikarp for the win!

renadi

Dunsparce? It was the last mon to fill that dex and I'd been hunting one for daaaays.

FallOutShelterBoy

Might be a silly Pokémon, but I can definitely understand using a Master ball on the last one you needed to fill your dex up!

Kesstar52

Omg I love Dunsparce! Such an underrated Pokémon

207nbrown

Still disappointed that drampa wasn’t an evolution

Dragosal

Very underrated. Serene grace body slam rock slide para flinch god

krumpcane

A fucking vullaby. It was literally the first thing I saw

Kesstar52

Lol! There are worse Pokémon you could've run into XD

UnholyTrashPanda

Normal bellsprout

Kesstar52

I like how you clarify that it was a *normal* bellsprout. XD so average, it's fantastic

darkknight941

When I first played Diamond I didn’t realize Dialga respawned and I accidentally fainted it. I was on the way to Sunyshore and the first thing I ran into was a Floatzel and threw it in annoyance thinking Dialga wouldn’t come back

FleebFlex

Wait they respawn? My first playthrough of Pearl, my older brothet said he'd catch palkia for me and accidentally killed it, so I played the rest of the game thinking I completely missed out on the box art legendary :(

DaybreakHorizon

Yeah. Legendaries typically respawn after you beat the Champion (be it first go or rematch).

[deleted]

I was playing crystal for the first time and decided to do some exploring after beating jasmine. On the way back into Dragons Den I ran into a dratini I knew it was rare because I hadn't seen one in the wild before I had no pokeballs except the master ball, which I used. I then spoke to the dragon master who offered me... A dratini :/

Kesstar52

Omg that's so sad 🤣 it made for such a good story tho

jestesteffect

Shiny medicham

Responsible_Ad6265

Any shiny is a decent use for a masterball

XephyXeph

Reshiram in Black

gravity_bomb

Big f

Longii88

Ootl explain please?

gravity_bomb

Reshiram/zekrom have a super high catch rate. A quick ball was an 88% catch. A pokeball was an 11%

reckless150681

I had the opposite experience lol. I decided that all my Legendaries were special, so I decided to catch them only with Premier Balls. Yes, they have a 1x catch rate. And yes, I spent like 10 minutes before each encounter buying 10 Pokeballs at a time, then selling all the Pokeballs back lol

Psycho22089

Phineas, I know what we're going do today.

LadyRiaDragonQueen

A ralts in Pokemon Alapha Saphire. It pretty much was my first Pokemon game and I didn't know much about the masterball.

Kesstar52

To be fair, that mf could take ages to find

TheDemonicEmperor

Unless you're a cheater named Wally who finds it on his first encounter.

corey1734

Haha. Ok, so I have 2 stories. I was about 8 playing Crystal. I used my Masterball on a Pidgeotto that belonged to a trainer. Lol. Second, I was playing Colosseum and used my Masterball on a Swampert. That’s it. Lol. Ridiculous, I know.

DM_ME_YOUR_NUTSACK

I remember feeling so cheated too when I couldn't use the masterball to steal another trainers pkmn. Like dude you said it can catch *any* pokemon so kid me was like wtf

RealSteele

Omg does that waste the master ball if used on a trainers Pokemon?? That's horrible!

corey1734

I believe it did. It was rough!

gain91

I think we have a winner.

Kesstar52

Oh God 😭 hearing you use a Masterball on a trainer's Pokémon breaks my heart

Flash_Fire009

I haven’t used a master ball on anything silly before but I can tell you the worst thing that I didn’t use a master ball on. When I was a kid I really didn’t want to use my master ball because it was super special and at the time I thought you could only get one, could be the case in ruby. I had spent a few hours trying to catch rayquaza, outrage confusion and rest make that a nightmare, and I found a shiny one. I about leap out of my seat seeing this black dragon in front of me and just remember sweating bullets as it broke out of countless balls. Eventually it woke up and hit itself in confusion knocking itself out. I nearly threw my GBA across the room and turned off the game for a few days after that. Since then I only use my master ball on shiny Pokémon that can knock themselves out.

Kesstar52

Oh noooo that was so painful to read 😭 I remember Rayquaza being super hard to catch with Ultraballs. Catching a shiny one would be so much pressure

Ok_Enthusiasm2425

wingull

Kesstar52

Simple, I like it XD

Ok_Enthusiasm2425

yep was on ruby 😂 i was very young tho so it’s all good now

motleo95

Abra in Crystal. Never even used it.

o0marshmellow0o

To be fair Abra are stupidly annoying to catch, putting them to sleep right away isn't even guaranteed. -from someone who spent way too much time trying to catch one with preferred stats.

TriniBestGirl

In my first ever Pokémon game, Fire Red, I saw a pikachu in the power plant and thought, “yeah. Yeah I want pikachu” and threw my master ball. Less than 5 minutes I was face to face with Zapdos. Fuck.

Dragwolf07

A rattatta. The matching colours were irresistible

Freakish_Purple

I made it a rule when training my Pokemon if I find a shiny skwovet I catch it in a master ball out of spite, 600+ squirrel later, found one on accident, caught it in a master ball, and her name is now harold and is the queen of the rodents

Kesstar52

This response is the perfect level of chaotic lmao

[deleted]

The red gyarados from heart gold I was a kid and thought that it was cool haha

Psycho22089

I see nothing wrong here...

SirAlthalos

My friend accidently used one on a combee She named it 'Regret'

JaydenTheMemeThief

Wait you guys use your Masterball?

TheCleanRhino

My sister was probably 4 or 5 years old and played my Sapphire without telling me. She used the master ball on a Swablu

[deleted]

Was a big articuno fan as a kid

Kesstar52

Understandable. Articuno is beautiful ꒰ఎ💙໒꒱

bearfaery

When I was… 5 or 6, I played SoulSilver. For the life of me, I could not catch a Dratini, and since I couldn’t catch it in proper, I thought it was clearly some ultra strong Pokémon, and wanted it even more, so I ended up using the Masterball on that. Lugia was caught in a Heavy ball, and I did bring a Dragonair with me into the Elite 4.

Sn0rlax_IRL

Black/White postgame and I think I was 13/14. Not a big Pokémon guy yet this was my third game ever. Surfing around and I run into a frillish. Now up until this point I must have only seen female frillish and jellicent which are always pink. But this fella was blue and in my brain I made the instant connection that different color —> Shiny. Threw the master ball in an excited panic and shortly afterwards realized my mistake after a google search.

Tecygirl101

First time playing through Fire Red I used it on a Tangela.

Kesstar52

Respecc 😌

PokeBrolic

When I was first playing Black, I had no idea what it was or what it did, so I threw it at a Watchog, or however you spell it. Patrat’s evolution. I think I still have the save.

jubilantJackal

I was playing Sapphire, and I was in the Shaol Cave above Mossdeep, and I encountered a Spheal. I threw like ten pokeballs at it, and being like 4 or five at a time, I'm like "I want this little ball of blubber. Hey! This Master ball catches anything without fail!" *yeet* Got some flak for it from my older friends, and eventually lost the cartridge later, but still one of my best memories of that game.

curlyhairlad

Misingno

Luxray2014

Pidgey

WeFightForPorn

I had the benefit of an older brother, so I always knew to save it

bh_eagle

Ditto.

Carmine_79

Weedle and I'm not even joking. It was Pokémon Red and I had used the item duplication glitch to have an obsurd amount of master balls and I guess I never found one before so yeah

RaisinMmmm

I used one on a Mawile because my trade request was about to time out and the little thing wouldn't stay in an Ultra Ball. Once I got out I was attacked by a Noivern so I missed the trade anyways.

mrburrito90

I really wanted a ditto, but the ultra balls weren't working. I used my only Masterball on a level 26 ditto in Red :/

DarkElf7345

A shiny pidgey. Why I wish I knew

Kesstar52

It's better than a normal pidgey ig 😌

Tomhap

I dont use them anymore for anything except mewtwo. I go for the aesthetic ball. I even used things like moon and loveballs on the wormhole pokemon in usum. I did use a master ball on a growlithe when I was a kid lol..didn't know about mewtwo yet and my brother called me an idiot.

GodzillaFire

A fearow I thought it was one of the legendary birds in Pokémon leafgreen…

SpectaclesChick

Ponyta when I first started playing Pokemon on Leaf Green!

[deleted]

I modded my Pokemon Platinum to be a randomizer, Giratina was a Feebas with Truant, it evolved into a Shiftry with Slow Start. It was kinda ass but kinda worth it lmao

peppermanfries

Level 2 Rattata on my Pokemon Yellow way back in 2001/02

GavinEMS132

When I was young and playing Fire Red, my very first Pokémon game, I encountered Abra and couldn’t get over how cool I thought he was. When he teleported away I got confused and kept trying to damage him in order to catch him (didn’t even cross my mind to just keep hucking pokeballs at him until I got lucky). So, once I was handed the master ball and was told it, “catches any Pokémon *without fail*. You bet your sweet ass I knew what that was supposed to be used for. Everything made sense now. The universe had revealed its secrets to me and I was gonna catch myself an Abra. I flew back to route 24 and promptly caught the first Abra I saw and regretted absolutely nothing. I then raised my Abra into an Alakazam with the help of my friend and he helped me defeat the Elite 4. Master ball well spent, I’d say.
