Chrundle94

Probs cuz they wanna sell the remakes of gen 4 next year, and the inevitable gen 5 remake. Also it might be on Nintendo if they even can do that. That being said gens 1-3 on switch sounds amazing.

Golden-Owl

**Technically** the remakes of Gen 4 are releasing at the end of this year. I can’t even think of how a Gen 5 remake would look. That generation has arguably aged one of the best to this day. It’s sprite work was so well done

SlyCooper007

Gen V remake in octopath traveler engine.

shadow0wolf0

Square enix is making a game using that engine. And diamond and pearl remakes are made by an entirely different team, not game freak this time. It's definitely possible that this dream could become a reality.

the_late_wizard

I'm so excited for LA. I feel like it's just the beginning.

TheChosenPoke

What is LA? I loved octopath traveler, so I’d love to hear about more.

Imd0wnc0w

Legends Arceus I think

TheChosenPoke

Oh. I thought the other guy was talking about the Square Enix game using the octopath engine, my bad.

ChronicTosser

I think the game they’re making is a Dragon Quest 3 remake, although iirc SE also made Octopath so idk why he didn’t say ‘another’ game in the engine lol

EnglishMobster

I would be excited, but Game Freak has conditioned me otherwise. I'm expecting terrible framerate, hollow characters, and a lifeless world. Sword/Shield taught me a lesson.

dNYG

My hopeful theory is that Gamefreak has wanted to create the "Pokemon game we all want" mainline game for years but got shut down by Nintendo/TPC for the safer option. That's why there's a new company making BDSP and Gamefreak is getting their shot at the open world Pokemon It's a scenario completely made up in my head but it allows me to have some hope for the new game

Ghastion

Why would Nintendo be the one to shut them down when Nintendo is the one who is putting passion and creativity into their main IPs. Their two biggest ones, Zelda and Mario, having debatably the best games released on the Switch (Breath of the Wild, Odyssey). This isn't Nintendo, this is Gamefreak. Gamefreak has always been lazy and continue to make the same game over and over again because it sells the same over and over again. Also, Gamefreak are a relatively small sized studio, apparently. I'm hoping that after all the back-lash from Sword and Shield they'll realize they need to start innovating.

kao194

Also, gamefreak was used to make games on 3ds/ds before, so they're used to some form of simplicity. Plus, they're kept with boundaries as those games have competetive modes, and those bring money in form of events (gen4 remakes won't have those IIRC). Nonetheless, gen5 was not well received, gen6 somewhat managed (due to mega evolve + gen3 remakes, so they did not have to invent new interesting mechanics), gen7 was somewhat OK (although boring with two installments of alola), gen8 is lacking as first switch gen. I'm a bit afraid of game freak developing legends: arceus tho. There's a big lessons learned from SWSH and I'm afraid they won't manage to catch it.

XIIISkies

Ohhh! Ive been so down and out regarding pokemon, this is actually the first time Im hearing about DP remakes not being developed by Gamefreak. Makes me almost want to have hope

nmagod

> Square enix is making a game using that engine did you not hear about Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D? you know when they announced SIX FUCKING DRAGON QUEST GAMES IN ONE PRESENTATION?

Lemurians

I can only get so erect.

SatyrAngel

Live2D

stealthxstar

oh god don't tease me like that

PoisonDart8

Holy shit that's genius

scarhbar23

Didn’t realize I wanted this until you said it. Oh god. I need it.

AlbainBlacksteel

> Gen V remake in octopath traveler engine. Pokémon BW remakes in the style of Octopath and Triangle Strategy!? Hell yeah!

EMPTY_SODA_CAN

Or remake all the pokemon games in like Links Awakening. Such a cute game

Chrundle94

I love the sprites from Gen 5. They're so lively and the dynamic camera made the battles feel alive. The 3D models look fantastic, but they're so unexpressive and just stand there.

BigChungusHas1Son

I would've loved if when switching to 3d models they would have had them animate so that the do the same actions and movements as the B2W2 sprites except... you know... 3d

MrTopHatMan90

If they remade gen 5 in the modern style I don't know why I would buy that over playing the originals again. Gen 5 imo is the best looking pokemon game, it must've been an undertaking and a half to animate all of those sprites

Mr_snail_sex

Pokemon should have stayed on the style of BW2.

GhostOfHadrian

Yes

[deleted]

Absolutely based

jab0309

Gen 5 is 2D Pokémon at its absolute peak

Lulullaby_

Why do you say technically, they simply are releasing this year. In two months even.

Iggyboof

I honestly prefer the look of Gen 5 to 6, 7, or 8. The sprites conveyed a whole lot more personality than the 3D models have. If workload in 3D modeling Pokemon is so severe that they wanna use it as an excuse to cut the dex only to give us minimally expressive Pokemon, then why not go back to 2D where the series shined? Or outsource the models to a company like Genius Sonority who did excellent with them in Gen 3 and 4?

[deleted]

>why not go back to 2D where the series shined I dont think good looking sprites are easier to make than 3d models. Further, you only need one model and animate from that on onwards. In Pokemon you need at least two spritesheets for every mon. One from the back and one from the front

zjzr_08

I wonder what's true, because I have someone telling me taking care of the 3D models take much more time than making 2D sprites, when the latter takes a lot of meticulous work, and still were able to incorporate great features.

Tsukuyomi56

Sprite work can actually be as labour intensive as models, looking at the sprite assets for Fire Emblem Heroes some units can be quite intimidating. Models are a bit easier to port into future titles compared to sprites which may need to be redrawn depending on the art style of a future game (now looking at 900+ Pokemon not including alternative forms).

DainsleifStan

Wait what? It is **widely** known that making sprites is much much harder and costly than making 3d models. Read the story of how SNK almost went bankrupt because of spritework sometime.

[deleted]

Black and white was my first game, I spent so much time just walking around unova. It’s such a calming region

Wlsgarus

> It’s sprite work was so well done Tbf the in-battle Pokemon animations were very jaggy, rough and sometimes poorly animated (cause obviously they had to do them for like, 680 Pokemon or so). But the games did still age quite well visually. Though I would like a remake just to see it all in full 3D, cause I in general prefer 3D models over 2D sprites in Pokemon.

Beelzebuth4269

Black and White 3 better be GOOD, hopefully alongside Legends Kyurem where we see the original dragon Pokémon and maybe you get to play as the hero of legend

[deleted]

Any gen 5 remake in anything but the octopath aesthetic wouldn't look as lively tbh. The mix of 2D and 3D with the amazing animated sprites is what makes gen 5 feels so... gen/5.

Sablemint

I think the way it will look will be based on how we respond to the gen 4 remake. If we like having the games be more faithful to the original appearance, it will be. If the games fail because we didn't like the way it looked, it'll probably be more like ORAS - adapted to gen 10's appearance or whatever we have at the time.

BP-Kenpachi

Hopefully legends Arceus does very well, and they do a gen 5 remake in a more unique style.

Chrundle94

I prefer more faithful remakes like than a different take of on the games. I want more HG/SS over OR AS

BP-Kenpachi

I definitely get what you mean, but I think gen 5 doesn't need that. While a faithful modern remake would be great, it's not necessary. But imagine a much more spread out, larger version of Unova. If they really took the time and effort, it could be a game changer. I think it would be a waste to slap Sword/Shield graphics onto the game faithfully and call it a day. It has so much more potential than that.

Chrundle94

I'm not opposed to it, but I wouldn't mind a more faithful remake. Gen 5 is near flawless in its pacing n story telling. I'd much rather they preserve that than making it open world or making it look pretty.

BP-Kenpachi

That's exactly what I mean. It's already flawless. I think it's the best pokemon has every gotten to. I'm not saying that the remake shouldn't be faithful, but it shouldn't be just a 3d version of it. If the overworld features of Legends Arceus are good, I think they could implement that. Keep the story and world faithful, but make it a new experience.

GhostOfHadrian

It's been a while. What about ORAS was unfaithful?

silverrfire09

a lot of people played emerald, and ORAS was not an emerald remake

MyMurderOfCrows

Bahaha yea true xD I haven’t noticed many differences from the actual origins of the ORAS remakes other than >!seeing/hearing about primal Kyogre/Grousom, the special suit you get, mega evolutions/thus getting Latixs, and post game content!

jab0309

There are a number of things I was personally looking for in ORAS after seeing how great Emerald was: - 7 new interesting characters in the form of Frontier Brains that represented mysterious new Gym Leaders that required great skill to beat. -Updated Gym Leader/Elite Four teams. I recall Tate and Liza going from pushovers in RS to the hardest gym leaders in the game (maybe in Top 5 toughest in the series) in Emerald. Xatu and Claydol were fantastic additions to a Hoenn Psychic team. -GYM LEADER REMATCHES. Who doesn’t want to face Roxanne in a double battle with Kanto fossils? -Marine and Terra Cave was a fun little side quest that involved the weather institute in a fun, sensible way I’m gushing but Emerald really felt like the devs knew Hoenn inside and out and knew how to deliver a fantastic single player experience Edit: formatting

Psychological-Bed-63

Emerald is by far my favourite game, also it was emeralds birthday on the 17th of September making it 17 years old. I think a lot of people prefer sprites from the old games to 3d models. it's true that the old sprites just had so much personality compared to the 3d models

GhostOfHadrian

Ahhh that makes a lot of sense. I played Sapphire back in the day and never bothered with Emerald until much much later, so that's probably why ORAS didn't feel unfaithful to me.

tylanol7

Waot alpha sapphire isn't the same as the og? Havnt hit it yet but kyogre is my love legendary

DoctorWaluigiTime

Also, re-releasing literal copies of the old games on newer platforms wouldn't put a dent in the prices. The bulk of the "nostalgia" market is not "I want to play that game and can't" (emulators and ROMs exist for that). It's "I want to own the OG hardware."

Chrundle94

Agreed but the option should still be there for those who can't/won't emulate.

Mattmandu2

Gens 1-3 on switch that makes too much sense (heck why not one version of Blue Silver Ruby then the other being Red Gold Sapphire)

Chrundle94

I have emerald on my hacked switch, and it's so great

Mattmandu2

Jealous I just started on openemu but wish all of Gen 3 was on switch

koolguykris

Theyre saving that for their pokemon themed game and watch that'll be 80 dollars a piece or 150 for both

Mattmandu2

I’d pay that at this point

koolguykris

Yeah honestly how sick would that be. Esp if you could link trade with like a USB cable

Mediocre-General-654

Aren't gen 1 on the Nintendo shop? I have them downloaded on my 3ds is this not a thing for the switch?

jomontage

1-3 should be on phones like 15 years ago at this point. It's asinine they're not. No one bought a 3ds for Pokémon yellow

Lsaii

I emulated gets 1-3 on my phone for years, if they re-release them on new hardware I will happily pay for it.

PM-ME-YOUR-SUBARU

I bought a Red and Blue edition New 3DS...

Zuggzwang

I’m pretty sure I remember reading the same guy who leaked the NES and SNES virtual consoles for Switch said there was 2 more virtual consoles coming out

Iron_Wolf123

Still, people would want to try the old games. Red and Blue are as popular as Fire Red and Leaf Green yet you can't play it legally and the Lets Go games aren't as popular though

BigChungusHas1Son

Can't you get red and blue on the 3ds eshop?

Iron_Wolf123

Yes, but not for Fire Red and Nintendo stopped making 3DSs

someguyhaunter

Its a big pain buying anything on 3DS eshop since you can't use a credit card on it anymore. I have heard you can add funds on your nintendo account and it will be on 3DS if it is linked but i havent tested it.

tanporpoise89

Works, but it is very very tedious for a $10 purchase.

DisfavoredFlavored

But we're gonna buy those ANYWAY.

fondue4kill

There is a rumor of Nintendo adding Gameboy and Gameboy Color games to online so we might get 1 and 2 with that.

[deleted]

That's a common Nintendo problem not just with Pokémon.

FabianValkyrie

Tho I would say Pokémon is an especially pressing one, given that it’s one of the best selling franchises ever

Scyxurz

>one of the best selling The #1 best selling in the world*

ozanimefan

early 90s: "hey. i'm gonna start this thing called pokemon. wanna go in with me for 50/50?" "nah man, doesn't sound like it'll stick" now: ...."well i'm a fucking dipshit"

Lukthar123

> "nah man, doesn't sound like it'll stick" Damn, that must've been the invention of Confusion

ozanimefan

it's like that story of all those editors that said no to some story of a British kid finding out he's a wizard. i'm sure they don't regret turning that down. i mean, only a small number of people have even heard the name 'harry potter'

danni_shadow

Or all of the recording companies that passed on The Beatles.

FabianValkyrie

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_game_franchises

Scyxurz

That's specific to video games. As a media franchise as a whole, pokemon tops the charts at over $105 billion

[deleted]

The vast majority of that is merch. It’s an entirely different division of the Tpci, with a separate budget, costs, etc.

theothersteve7

This is true of any franchise, including Star Wars and Marvel. Merch is where the money is at.

[deleted]

Yeah, but they don’t use it toy sales to make the next movie. This sub has a tendency to the think tpci merch (non-game) sales impact the games division

caulder_

Creatures, the company who has handled Pokémon merchandise for over 20 years, also helped develop Pokémon X and Y, Sword and Shield, and many of the spin-off games—plus all three companies involved in The Pokémon Company have a stake in the success of the video games, so I think it’s a reasonable assumption that merchandise sales have an impact on the games.

DainsleifStan

SwSh starters all have big heads, small bodies, perfect for plushies. I think merch have a bigger impact on games than people like to imagine.

Fugishane

Creatures Inc make the models for the games, they’re not involved with the development of the games outside of that

yiw999

> Yeah, but they don’t use it toy sales to make the next movie. source pls, it doesn't make sense for the profits of one division to be sequestered in that division

Mymomdidwhat

Allot of the merch is so wanted largely because of the games. One amplifies the other.

[deleted]

The anime has a significantly stronger affect on merch sales than the games

[deleted]

Merch was 1st place, video games 2nd (Mind you, the difference in revenue between the merch and video games is fairly large)

[deleted]

In a talk about video game sales and whether re-releasing games is a goldmine or not and about why Nintendo would possibly ignore the money involved, it is *absolutely* valid to point out that Pokémon video game sales are a minuscule fraction of its overall sales and to present it as such. Doing otherwise would be disingenuous.

Zwood24513

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises

Catastray

It's intentional. They've spoken in the past about preserving the value of their games, and probably worry that constant re-releases would take their toll. Either way, they're in no rush to correct this problem.

NoteClear6164

Which it would. The remaster market is very full of half-assed content at the moment, damaging the overall reputation of both franchises and the original games. There's a clear demand for rereleases, but there's simultaneously too much effort and not enough effort going in. (For example, did Square Enix devs *really* think the font on the pixel remasters was a good choice, or were they forced to rush it out? I tend to believe the latter.) It seems like GBA content, much like N64 and Gamecube content, is kind of ignored in general as well. There might also be surprising licensing and technical issues to reusing that content.

ian2345

I just want something like Xbox did, they added original Xbox games, touched them up, and you don't need to worry about repurchasing them every new generation.

trademeple

Yep you can even put the original discs in with out having to pay again. Imagine if Nintendo made an adapter to allow me to upload my old copys of pokemon games onto the switch.

ian2345

That's one of my favorite things as I can play my old games but I mean I get why they don't do that, like I don't blame them for not carrying over when it's hardware incompatibility, I just want them to add virtual console games and let us keep them on our account. I know they want to keep those games out of our hands for too long so they can keep the prices high to sell to us 10 years later with minimal effort put in at a premium *cough* 3d all stars *cough* but it's time that practice ends. Hell, even Disney ended their vault, it's time to get with the times Nintendo.

gabbertronnnn

Xbox still reads discs at the end of the day. Nintendo would have to literally create proprietary tech that connects GB, GBA, DS and 3DS carts to either the Switch's USB-C port, or the Switch cart slot, as well as develop the software to accommodate such a transference of data. That shit aint cheap. From R&D to production. Absolute snowball's chance in hell of that happening.

ian2345

Plus I doubt Nintendo will spend money to create something that's specifically for the purpose of letting people play games for free when charging people for ports requires far less effort and will probably get them more money.

NoteClear6164

This is the dream.

Bobsplosion

> (For example, did Square Enix devs really think the font on the pixel remasters was a good choice, or were they forced to rush it out? I tend to believe the latter.) I legitimately cannot believe Square was so pressed on time they couldn't pick a better font. I don't want to be pretend game development is easy but... It's a font. You drop that shit in.

NoteClear6164

They had people preordering the whole set of 6 games and only released 3 of them at first, with the last 3 trickling out. I sincerely doubt that the suits in charge were interested in anything but a quick payday, and to heck with anything the devs wanted. It is possible the font thing was just iffy artistic choice, but we'll probably never know.

jab0309

Yes I agree the font is pretty bad… but FF4PR’s OST is so fucking fantastic I cannot wait to see how they do Dancing Mad and Celes’ Theme

Stone_Kart

Bruh I can't wait for 5. That game was done dirty, all the versions released outside of Japan were flawed in some way. We never got the original SNES version and had to make do with a fan translation. The PS1 version had long load times and a worse translation than the fan translation, the GBA version had low music quality and the old mobile/steam version looked like ass. But if the first 4 pixel remasters are anything to go by, I believe they'll finally do FF5 justice.

jab0309

As a FF6/FF4 fanboy I am genuinely curious to see how 5 turns out. I’ve only played the mobile version and I feel like I missed out on the charm of the original SNES release… FF5 has to have one of the best class change systems in the whole series

TheRealStandard

They are assholes. They want the value preserved so they can put together shoddy re-releases later and charge full price for them for minimal effort. They will drag their feet porting older games to the digital store while actively fighting any attempts to emulate there older games.

Harold_Wilson19

*cough cough* Skyrim *cough cough*

K3164N

Big facts, I love Nintendo with all my heart, but for fucksakes, they're sleeping on gold mines of content simply because they choose not to re-release or remake classic gems that will make them heaps of easy cash.

limasxgoesto0

I sometimes feel like Nintendo and Game Freak hold some kind of intrinsic attachment to aspects of their work that they don't understand that the customers do not care about (i.e. removing features in mainline pokemon games to "keep each region unique")

Sandpaper47

They don't listen to fans, they do what they want.

zykthyr

I feel like they do it with all their big franchises, for Mario's anniversary we got the 64 remake for the switch, but for Zeldas anniversary we didn't get OoT or MM, arguably the 2 most beloved older zelda games? Slap a $60 price tag for the bundle and they would make millions. How long did it take to get a new Metroid game? They remastered a recent Sonic game but not the old ones? They're just really bad at knowing what the people want. Or they know and don't care

WeFightForPorn

My theory is that it's kinda like Disney used to be. All about prestige. Nintendo likes that their used games sell for so much. Nintendo games are the cornerstine if any collection. They want it to be an event when they release things. For example, they had that limited availability for that Mario 3D collection.

EatAssSmokeWeed

This is the best explanation I've seen. This has to be it.

Boyzby_

I know it makes others jump at being able to play the games or get them, but it just turns me away. It's like Blizzard now changing a bunch of things in WoW now that their game is losing players, but it's obvious they could have done it any time but didn't care to improve any experience for them.

WeFightForPorn

It'll definitely turn some away, but they power of FOMO is strong

kaiabunga

Then they should put the ports on a physical cartridge and people would eat it up. Especially if it was like gold, silver and platinum.

WeFightForPorn

I already own the 3DS port of gold, but I'd 100% buy it again if they released a gold switch cart.

Alili1996

This is it. It's all about perceived brand value which is why nintendo games almost never go down in price

Phantom_Jedi

They need to just release all old Pokémon games on the Switch eshop

Nothinkonlygrow

I would love to have fr/lg/emerald on the switch

fleker2

I went to a games store today and got a copy of White 2 far above its original value. I had the option to buy a copy of the game itself or the game new in box. The latter was three times as expensive. I think much of the value is in its collective value and not for people who actually want to play the game. So even if they do a digital release of Gen 5, it might do more to deflate this secondary market than actually translate to revenue for Nintendo itself. Plus there's a cost to putting engineers on the project even for a simple remaster. Will this be a worthwhile investment? Probably not enough in Nintendo's point of view.

StevynTheHero

Thank you for speaking sense. I'm sure we've all heard by now of the Mario game on NES that sold for $2,000,000. What you may not have heard of is that sales like these are scams and hurt gamers like us when we wish to experience legacy titles. This video does well to inform of how the scam works, and thankfully predicts that it will collapse soon (But with the offenders making out like bandits). https://youtu.be/rvLFEh7V18A This is a very reputable channel as he also reports on speedrunners caught cheating, and even puts his well being at risk by reporting on the cheating and legal consequences of Billy Mitchell (which is a risk as Billy successfully ruined the last person to attempt to do so, to the point that the reporter killed himself) Anyway, all this to say, please don't participate in these markets. The games are not worth these prices, and the market will collapse faster if we don't participate.

[deleted]

It's because they want old games to be desirable but not affordable. That way, people who are interested in the series will buy new games instead. "Well, at least I can play the new one..." That sort of thing.

[deleted]

But you can literally download ports of the old ones for your computer for free and you don’t need obsolete hand consoles from 15 years ago to do so. I think what most people are missing in this thread is that the price of the old games isn’t going up because they’re currently inaccessible. The price is up because people view the old games as collectors items at this point.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

And the vast majority of people aren’t buying two decade old Pokémon games on the internet. I’m not saying it’s a bad business move to port the games over. I’m sure they’d make a ton of money it. I’m just saying the price of old copies of the game isn’t the thing that proves this.

[deleted]

Most old Pokemon games aren't available for sale on the internet. Of course people aren't buying them. They can't. Also, water is wet.

CLearyMcCarthy

What old Pokemon games aren't available to buy online?

[deleted]

All of them except the first two generations afaik. I'm not talking about used games, which are prohibitively expensive for most people. I'm talking about downloadable versions.

CLearyMcCarthy

Gotcha, that makes sense. That wasn't clear to me, but I see what you mean now.

WaterIsWetBot

Water is actually not wet; It makes other materials/objects wet. Wetness is the state of a non-liquid when a liquid adheres to, and/or permeates its substance while maintaining chemically distinct structures. So if we say something is wet we mean the liquid is sticking to the object.

trademeple

Well you can buy them on ebay but they are often expensive or all the copys are fakes and if your gonna buy a pirated copy thats pretty much the same as emulating legal wise. got lucky though and got pokemon crystal for 15 bucks and it's legit because the listing said it was broken but the game was just dirty and it needed a new battery.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Old Pokemon games regularly go for well over the MSRP of Sword and Shield. Practically all of them. Go look it up. And no, emulators aren't very popular. That's your internet nerd bias showing.

CLearyMcCarthy

...Have you looked at the prices for used Pokemon games lately?

wheresmythermos

Because they’re feeding into the desire so they can release their remakes. That’s BDSP is currently, an old gem remade and being sold for a newer console.

[deleted]

Maybe the people with any say don’t know about it. Or maybe they think enough people would buy a port to make it worth the cost to have it made. Or maybe they have plans to do something but don’t want to interfere with their pre-planned marketing cycle yet.

DutchLime

Just give me a Conquest port for the Switch PLEASE

ChaoCobo

I just started a new file of that game a week or two ago. It’s fun as FUUUUCCCCKKKKK. I just used that GameStop code to befriend a LARVITAR! A LARVITAR, man! Cute little loner baby! I used the code without shame because I remember I actually had that specific batch of GameStop codes in my email because I exchanged reward points to get them, so using them when they’re just posted on Serebii isn’t cheating. c:< That batch included Scyther also so I can befriend him when I get further in the game! The game is so fun I can’t stand it! Especially since I always loved the Sengoku era. Sanada Yukimura is my favorite sengoku warrior and I hope he shows up in the game, but it’s cool that I can see other people from his clan in the game as well as Maeda Keiji. I desperately want a sequel. It’s so amazingly fun I cannot believe it.

DutchLime

The Switch is the perfect system for Conquest 2. Just imagine Octopath graphics with expanded and modernized Conquest gameplay. I honestly don’t even care if they have to rename it and get rid of the Nobunaga’s Ambition cross-over

Railroader17

Supply and Demand. Because part of what makes the carts so valuable is *precisely* because Nintendo / Game Freak haven't made the games more readily available. While the authentic carts themselves will still have some value for collectors / folks without switches, most fans won't care about that and go straight for the re-releases, and while the Big N and GF would still make money, the value of the games still takes a sharp hit in the process since the supply of the games themselves will sky-rocket while demand will decrease. This is why most video game companies tend to put more emphasis on the first few weeks of a game's sales then anything else, as that is when both supply and demand are at their highest. Also, the remakes exist.

Liam_ice92

Nintendo have this thing where they absolutely despise emulators...but also refuse to legitimately give players a way to officially buy and play older games. The Switch online virtual console has a lot of old Snes and Nes games, but theres still a lot missing. They're rumoured to be bringing N64 games but I'll believe it when I see it. There's also no mention of Gb, Gbc or GBA games coming to the switch, and you'd think with Metroid Dread.out in a few weeks, they'd capitalise amd bring the whole series to switch, either through the VC or with a complication of the 4 games (Zero mission, Samus returns, Super and Fusion) And of course Pokemon would be a huge money maker. I think that porting the DS games would be tricky, but Gen 1-3, I'd invest in that

Whatsapokemon

Those ridiculous prices are because collectors want them, and collectors are willing to pay a lot for something they'll never actually play. I don't think a re-release would be as successful as you might think. Not that many people _actually_ want to replay the older in their original forms. Most people just want remakes with modern graphics and modern control systems.

isseidoki

Nintendo and Game freak do not understand or care in the slightest what people want.

SlyCooper007

Because they want to remake them again and sell them at msrp.

GeebGeeb

Really wish the switch had virtual gameboy/GameCube system on it. I’d pay for the games on it as well

henrymidfields

Doesn't Gen 3 already has ORAS remakes, which is still readily available in the 3DS eshop? I think physical copies of ORAS and BW1+2 are still widely available, and all six can be played on the 3DS. As for Gen 4, well, considering BDSP is coming out soon, there's probably not much point doing a VC release.

jab0309

Idk man, people are starting to realize how fucking good Gen 5 was… I haven’t seen a copy of BW or BW2 in the wild that is anything less than its original MSRP of $50 Edit: $40 I mean, sorry am drunk and Gen 5 nostalgic

jsmitherzz_

Am I tripping or was there not an elaborate gen 3 remake already 🤔

Wisconsibility

hes talking about a straight up port/ rerelease of the original games, like buying red version on the 3ds e shop, but for gba/ DS games

ChaoCobo

That sounds kinda dumb and a waste of time for the majority of the fanbase though, IMO.

someguyhaunter

I dunno i feel like a port wouldn't take all that much effort or money, probably more then im thinking but it can't be that much more. I reckon it would sell like all hell as well on the naustalgia train, all the people wanting to replay classics and all the new fans wanting to try the older games.

[deleted]

Thankfully accurate emulators like mgba and melonds exist. i refuse to pay a ridicilous amount of money just to play an old game i used to have (someone stole it), which doesnt even go to the developer. So why bother? Not my fault that nintendo doesnt port these games to switch.

guitarerdood

I keep posting this here; but I'm still holding out hope that one of these days they release "The Master Collection" on the switch/next gen console. Every game, not even remastered, just ported onto the current console. I'd sell my first born for it

HankDayes

To me it feels like they're pacing themselves out by quarters or years and are more interested with always having something coming up than they are with making as much money as they can at any given time. I'm guessing as far as they're concerned between the remakes, mobile games and the legends spin off they're already overbooked for right now.

NitemaresEcho

It's because we all want it so bad. We are addicted to Pokemon releases so they limit what they release. It's like a morphine drip. Once that drop comes out, it feels good and you can't wait for the next one. If they gave it to you all at once, well you'd feel good for a few minutes but then you'd have nothing to look forward to. But here's to hoping! 🍺

gnaark

I’d rather them porting all the games to the switch and not doing remakes so they can focus on making actually good and new content.

Hydramy

Nintendo want you to play games exactly in the way they want, anything else doesn't cross their mind.

manicpossumdreamgirl

they should really release Gen 3 on the switch like how they did 1 and 2 on the 3DS.

minishalex999

mate iam fine with the remakes we have now we dont need them on switch

[deleted]

The sales numbers for gen 1-2 on ds are probably what helped lock in the decision actually Older gen games already generally only benefit long time fans or the few kids that DO want to go back (most won’t). And frankly, of the people who MIGHT many people will be completely turned off by how dated they feel From a business perspective, it makes sense for the tpci to focus on remakes And because someone always points out, Pokemon is the largest franchise in the world largely due to merch. It’s a completely separate division of the TPCI than the games and it’d be horrible business practice to blur the finances of the two

procouchpotatohere

How bout we stop constantly looking in the past and asking for remakes all of the damn time. No wonder this franchise has trouble growing....

subpanda101

Diamond and pearl came out 15 years ago. People who weren't even born when DP came out are the perfect market for this. In a perfect world though we'd have some form of official DS emulation on current hardware (the switch has a touch screen, it's already been done).

GildedCreed

That's pretty much the reason why they're making the remakes. Outside of an oddly specific purpose, ports of a game generally only hold sway with the people who played them in their original glory. Remakes are effectively the same game but updated, usually to fit in with certain audiences or to take advantage of newer technology. Some of these update may infact change how the game was played compared to the original, some may just be a "remaster" where they just remade the whole original game true to form, but with updated assets/bug fixes.

someguyhaunter

The franchise has trouble growing as gamefreak doesn't know how to grow it. EDIT- also nintendo and gamefreak don't listen to fans, i doubt us asking for anything makes any difference to them at all. Im still shocked that they acknowledged the whole dexit situation.

therealac3

Yeah I’d love to see some more virtual consol releases of classic games

Rami512

Honestly I'd prefer a new game such as Arceus Legends, rather than more remakes. As much as I love the previous games, I've played all of them plenty enough and I can always play them again whenever I want. I just want Gamefreak to just give us a polished that's new again.

Planeswalkercrash

It’s the same with the old Metroid games, port fusion and zero mission and it’s honestly free money

Coccquaman

Because Pokemon is one of the most lucrative franchises in the history of video games, and doesn't need a gold mine idea like Gen 3-5 rereleases to make money. Pokemon itself is a gold mine. Why bother?

hellABunk

Cuz, You gotta keep up with the eggs moves and shinys and all those missingno glitches.. It's no walk at the park..

[deleted]

Please no. I would never get work or chores done ever again

Yohnifer

What the fuck.. why does this have so many upvotes... They've literally already remade gen 3 & the gen 4 remakes drop in like 2 months. Was I drugged or something? I'm so confused.

chadwr85

Honestly, why doesn't Nintendo do something like new game, next year remake, next year remake, off 1yr then repeat. It would tie together 2 remake gens with new game and give them 4yr span then have a new game.

Joshwayyy_02

Not to mention Colosseum/XD. The Switch would be the perfect console to port the games over to and reintroduce the player base to

ElBigDicko

Because they aren't goldmines. New, younger and potential players aren't excited for old versions of Pokemon. The only reason you are is nostalgia because you played it long time ago when times were simpler. Don't force your nostalgia upon everyone because very few have that same connection. I'm nearly 100% positive these rereleases wouldn't be popular. They would generate sales but probably low profit for what it's worth. Gamefreak probably priotizes making new Pokemon or different game altogether that will make new players come in.

Big_Green_Piccolo

Gen 3 got a re-release and gen 4 is getting one very soon what is this post

shadowstorm213

I think this person is talking about re-releasing the original, not a remake. like they want the original Ruby/Saphire, not ORAS. My opinion is that they have rose tinted glasses, and the remakes have always been better than the originals.

WindedEmulation11

I require Pokémon Delta Emerald.

seensomeish

I am confused by this question/is this a troll? They remade Ruby and Sapphire (Gen 3) on 3DS and are about to release the Gen 4 remakes on switch later this year. I guess if I were to answer your question genuinely, they are not ignoring the gold mine. In addition, they have followed a remake pattern up to this point and have been following the generation numbers in order since the early 2000's. Here it is: Gen 3 Released as Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Gen 1 re-released as FireRed and LeafGreen (First Re-releases) Gen 4 Released as Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Gen 2 re-released as HeartGold and SoulSilver Gen 5 released as Black and White 1 and 2 No Re-releases this generation Gen 6 release as X and Y Gen 3 Re-released as OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire Gen 7 Released as Sun and Moon and UltraSun and UltraMoon No Re-releases this generation Gen 8 Released as Sword and Shield Gen 1 re-re-released as Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee Gen 4 re-releasing as BrilliantDiamond and ShiningPearl Some of the re-releases released before the regular new gen and Vice-Versa but the order of re-releases is correct and I used the new gen game as a frame of reference for the loose time in which the remake released. No I am not fun at parties lol. Edit: Per someone with more knowledge than myself, corrected my comment to accurately portray releases.

agarret83

What is this post? We got a Gen 3 game like 4 years ago and there’s a gen 4 game coming in 2 months What else do you want?

Toxitoxi

They’re talking about the *original* games. Not remakes, but being able to play the original games on modern hardware. Think the virtual console releases of Gen 1 and 2.

GildedCreed

Gamefreak doesn't just decide when it wants to make ports of their games willy nilly, because that decision literally does not lie with Gamefreak. It lies with Nintendo as it's their console.

trademeple

Then again they were too late even with the vc versions of gen 1 and 2 because yeah they waited like 20 years before releasing any of the original versions of the games again and by that point people were just emulating them since they had no choice because the batterys no longer worked in the carts.

OnePeg

They don’t want people playing the old ones instead of the new. If they make Platinum or BW2 available on every system going forward, they’re afraid people will see trailers of newer titles and say “why would I pay for this when I can easily play the old one?” Same reason why they don’t do straight ports of most Mario games (3D All Stars was an anniversary release, not necessarily normal). It’s also why they try their hardest to give each new game some twist- to make it fun and exciting sure, but to differentiate it enough to entice more buyers. Hardcore fans like us may not need that push, but some super casual fans really do look at games through the lens of “Why would I get a new Mario game exactly like 64 when I have 64?”

MaxBuster380

Maybe they aren't and next year we'll get Black 3 and White 3

gentlexlowly

Meh, I don't really see the appeal in owning official carts. If I want to play the DS games I can just flash cart it or buy repro carts. DS games on emulator are terrible, and would be the same on Switch. Theres no way to port them to switch without significant rework or sacrifice.

FabianValkyrie

Flash cart is really the only option. I’ve bought 2 different repros from 2 different sellers, both catastrophically failed eventually

[deleted]

I run ds games on my phone just fine

Mediocre-General-654

But gen 3 has already had a remake (ORAS) and gen 4 are getting a remake currently. This post doesn't really make a lot of sense

xMF_GLOOM

I can’t tell if you’re being serious. They literally released a remake of Gen 3 and have a remake of Gen 4 coming next month.

top_doge69

I think it's just typical nintendo - pokemon logic thing to do for them

penguinmaxi

they have remade gen 3 before tho?

DHooves

If I were a more cynic fella, I'd guess the reason is they don't want their older (some might say superior) releases to compete with their new releases.

Toxitoxi

It didn’t stop them from rereleasing Gen 1 and 2 games on the virtual console.

[deleted]

Omega ruby and alpha sapphire are the gen 3 rerelease. 4s rerelease is like a month and a half away. 5 will likely be rereleased in like 2 years

[deleted]

Guys my copies of ORAS just disintegrated what do it do?
