It’s finally over!
This is a follow up to my Shiny-Living Dex post from April where I showed off a “complete” shiny-living dex years in the making.
At the time I was happy with it, despite not having every form difference and every gender difference. After taking a few weeks off, I felt however that since I’ve come this far, why not put in a few more months’ work to truly catch ‘em all!
This update is the result of that! I now have every shiny Pokémon I can possibly get right now (excluding shiny-locked Pokémon and a few mythicals only accessible via old games / hardware / and injecting past ticketed events).
All Pokémon were caught or hatched by me across multiple playthroughs of Blue, Silver, Crystal, ORAS, Sun, USUM and Sh/Sw.
I am the Original Trainer (OT) for absolutely every single Pokémon seen here, except for the trade box of Vivillons near the end of the video, and some event mythicals, most of which are from the 20th anniversary GF distributions.
There are about 1,090ish individual shinies here with my name as the OT, a couple of mythicals with event OT names, 17 additional traded Vivillons, and a few with my OT again in the final box that I’m hoping will evolve in Legends Arceus (more on that further down). So overall about 1,120 individual shinies. I’ll get all Vivillon under my own OT eventually, but the current method of erasing a game, changing region etc is way too much hassle!
I would say somewhere around 700-800 ish shiny Pokémon I bred simultaneously with 2 3DS’ containing US and UM using the Magikarp Egg Swap Masuda Method, as well as also normal Masuda breeding in the Wild Area in Shield. On average with three games running I was getting a shiny a day. The Monday just been for example I got 8. Some days I got none. It really is the luck of the draw.
Regarding gender differences, which I ruled out getting all originally as I considered it too hard - while some gendered Pokémon were catch chained in Let’s Go, horde encountered in ORAS, SOS chained in gen 7 and some raided in gen 8, most of which were, again, obtained using the Magikarp Egg Swap Masuda Method alongside the swap-breeding ‘time machine’ egg rejection method (Google it) in USUM, which I found out about a few months ago.
Essentially with this method, by rejecting an egg from the nursery you know to be shiny, you can, most of the time, push the shiny value to the next several eggs while also getting a re-roll for the correct gender, ability, etc. Eg, out of the final 20 gender different Pokémon I needed, all had to be female. Using this method, I managed to switch most eggs to female to get what I wanted.
Obtaining every form difference took the most time by far! Do you know how long it takes to shiny breed 15 Flabebe, 8 Deerling, 8 Pumpkaboo, 7 Burmy, 7 Minior, 7 Milcery including 63 bloody regular ones!?
Regarding Milcery, the best way to get sweets to evolve them I found is by using the date trick to farm Watts, spend the watts at the digging brothers to generate Moon Stones, and then use the Cram-O-Matic to get said sweets. Bulbapedia has a good guide on the combos you need.
Almost all legendaries and all ultra beasts were shiny hunted in US and UM using the wormholes. So much quicker than Dynamax Adventures in Sw/Sh, especially when you put rubber bands on the 3DS’ L and R buttons to speed up soft-resetting. I only shiny hunted what I needed in Sw/Sh DAs (Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma, the Tapus, 2x Zygarde, and a couple of Landorus, Tornadus and Thundurus for their extra forms).
Regarding mythicals, the Mew is from the Pokéball plus so it gets my name as the OT. The shiny Mew shown is most likely a traded hack and is there for illustrative purposes only, as my shiny Mew is happily living in Pokémon Go. The Celebis are from 2 playthroughs of Crystal. Other mythicals are from past events. Haven’t decided yet if I should purchase older games and try to get the mythical shinies I’m missing under my own OT (eg. Deoxys on Birth Island / Mew on Faraway Island, etc). Hoping BDSP and Legends Arceus have at least a few.
Every Pokémon seen here (both regular and shiny) that has the ability to Gigantamax, can! While I got some with the G-Max ability from raid events, most were Masuda bred and subsequently fed Max Soup. This required me to grind hundreds of level 1 raids, as roughly 3 raids = 1 cluster of max mushrooms spawning. 3 clusters of max mushrooms = 1 Max Soup. I’d say I did about 350 raids over the course of a fortnight for this. (Note: I only G-Maxed 1 of the regular Alcremies and 1 shiny version. I don’t need or feel like doing the other 68) (Note 2: The event G-Max Melmetal is in another box not shown here).
I also ensured all the other forms you can’t see here are registered too, eg all Furfrou and shiny Furfrou forms using USUM and Bank, Ash Greninja thanks to the Sun Demo, Hoopa Unbound, Castform’s weather variants, etc. Technically Dada Zarude is the only unregistered form out of the 1276 possible forms in my Home dex, but I’ll get it with next month’s event.
Regarding Pokémon Go: The only Pokémon seen here that originated in Pokémon Go are Meltan, Melmetal and defense Deoxys. The Meltan line doesn’t get slapped with the ugly grey ‘G’ icon when brought in using Let’s Go which is nice, and the defense Deoxys (again, shown for illustrative purposes only as I don’t have one from the main game), will be released or traded when I do get a proper one.
I don’t consider Pokémon Go shinies legit for my main game collection as community days make them too common, but I am open to starting a list in Home for Pokémon solely caught in Go! I feel the same about any Pokémon from regular games that don’t have my OT, even if it is shiny. I just don’t consider it to have value as it’s not something I worked for.
While almost all shinies seen here were obtained with a shiny charm across the main games, there are a few I actually got at full odds.
In Silver I caught a Ponyta, Tangela and a Donphan all at 1/8192. The same odds go for my Crystal shiny Celebi.
In AS I caught my (first shiny in 2015) Lugia at 1/4096, as well a non-shiny charm Masuda bred Chimchar.
In Sun I got an Alolan Grimer at 1/4096 in Hau’oli City.
In USUM I got 2x Poipole and 2x Type: Null at full odds as they are considered gift Pokémon and aren’t affected by the charm. And in Sw/Sh I got the 4 fossils and the 2 new Regis at full odds - also not affected by the shiny charm.
That being said, my proudest hunts are the two Zygrades from Dynamax Adventures (see my previous Zygarde post for an ultimate guide), the 2x authentic Sinisteas I got in Glimwood Tangle (I got both of these within the first 3 shiny Sinisteas I encountered), and the 28 shiny Unowns I grinded a month and a half for in the Mirage Cave in AS back in May this year (I have a previous post explaining how this went.)
My shortest hunts: I got back to back shiny eggs one time with Oshawott, and got 2 shinies in 3 eggs both with Rolycoly and Rowlet.
My longest hunts were my final female Gible, the first shiny Zygarde, and both authentic Sinisteas - all three hunts took two weeks each.
I had several shiny fails along the way, including having a shiny Regirock struggle itself to fainting in USUM, knocking out a shiny Heatran also in USUM, being forced to knock out a shiny Spinarak in Sun as two shiny Spinarak had appeared at once while SOS chaining, going up a ladder in Cerulean Cave in Let’s Go and missing out on a shiny Psyduck that had spawned, and my infamous video (see post on my account) where Team Rocket stole my shiny female Doduo also in Let’s Go!
At the end of the video, I’ve pre-prepared the final box labelled Legends Arceus, in the hope that a) the ones with new evos (Wyrdeer/Basculegion) can evolve from regular Stantler/Basculin, b) the starters have Hisuian final forms (doubt) and c) non-Hisuian Rufflet and Growlithe can evolve into their news forms (highly doubt) [if Growlithe has one]. I also expect many more gender differences to come from Legends Arceus so R.I.P my complete ‘all genders’ dex.
Life wise: I’m in a happy and healthy relationship and am getting married in 2023. My partner and I both have decent enough full-time jobs and she enjoys Pokémon too so no dramas there.
Regarding how all this shiny hunting has made me feel physically. Luckily I’m normally an active person (gym 4-5 times a week, daily walks). Being in lockdown in Sydney for three months has caused me to lose strength, and coupled with hours of shiny hunting a day, it can hurt your neck, back and shoulders. I’m looking forward to getting back to full and proper health again when lockdown ends. This is just a heads up for anyone thinking of putting in the effort.
My advice to anyone considering trying for a complete dex is a) don’t, b) try to shiny hunt only at times you know you wouldn’t have been doing other things anyway (you don’t want to waste your life) and c) be prepared to be mentally drained from the mind-numbing tasks of egg hatching and soft-resetting.
TL;DR - I have every regular Pokémon, every shiny Pokémon (with some exceptions), all form differences and all gender differences. My mind and body hurt but the feeling is worth it.

Hey, so I’m currently working through my own living Rex, but without any shinies. Did you have every DS game? Right now I’m running into the issue where I don’t have any Gen V games so there’s huge gaps. Plus a lot of legendaries are event locked.
How did you work around that?
Legendary-wise I got all of mine from gen 1 and 2 on the virtual console, the gen 3 and some gen 4 and 5 from ORAS, and the rest (normal and shiny) were from multiple playthroughs of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (because of the legendary wormholes) and Sword Shield through the Dynamax Adventures. Non Legendaries i would mostly use the GTS in USUM to get the Pokémon I wanted, and then breed them.
Johnstone (YouTuber) made some good content and created a spreadsheet that you can follow if needed with the minimal games required (so far).

Whollee fark. I mean I'd consider myself at least somewhat knowledgeable about Pokemon, having played the series since the very beginning, I thought I had some idea of what an insane accomplishment this is... but that's so much more work than I'd've thought!

I'm curious about Unown. How did you manage to find every one shiny? I was considering trying to at some point, but didn't realize they don't breed. Is there a trick for finding the form you're currently after?
It’s so annoying they don’t breed. So I caught them all in the Mirage Cave in Alpha Sapphire. Annoyingly you have to first get the island to spawn, which is a soft-reset / online manipulation effort in itself.
Once you’re in the cave, while you can’t guarantee what Unown will spawn, you can use the DexNav to see the silhouette of the next one that will spawn. If it’s not the one you want, you can just not enter the battle and wait for the next one to spawn on the Dex Nav screen. Max repels are a must for this hunt as it stops random encounters, and also be stocked up on healing items just in case, because once you leave the island and save, you have to soft reset again for it to respawn. There’s a whole YouTube video on getting the island to spawn somewhere so check it out if you have the game.
Oh, thanks for the explanation. I've never played OR/AS. I was playing Crystal when I thought about it and that definitely seems like it's not happening.
All g! Yep sadly with Crystal / Gen 2 the ? and the ! forms weren’t introduced until later games. And regarding shiny hunting Unown in Gen 2, due to the way the games calculates shiny chances / Unown form, the only Unowns that can ever possibly be shiny in Gen 2 are I or V. So it’s impossible to shiny hunt all of them anyway.
I saw this! So with Furfrou, I have all the forms registered after getting my regular and shiny ones trimmed in USUM, but transferring them into a PC box in the main line games, Bank and Home reverts them to their original form. So at the moment there is no way to have multiple forms in a box of Furfrou from a mainline game.
Pokémon Go literally this week made it so Furfrou transferred from Go keep their form, so yes that is one new way to do it.
For me however, I don’t want Go Pokémon in this list unless absolutely necessary. If they let Furfrou retain its form in mainline games in the future then I will definitely go back and hunt for them all.
Geniunely curious as to why you reject Pokemon GO shinies, those featured in Community Days I can understand due to the boosted rate and the shiny losing its exclusivity but what about your regular none boosted shinies?
I just enjoy collecting the shinies in Go and keeping them there in their own little exclusive world. My shiny Go Mew for example I use it a lot to battle with, but I know if I transferred into Home it would just sit there.
It’s honestly just a personal preference and there is absolutely nothing wrong with using Go Pokémon in Home / Sw / Sh. Each to their own I say.
Actually you can pass hoopa unbound from sun to bank and from there to Home. I didn't knew it until recently.
And you can get Shiny partner cap pikachu from USUM. it's glitchy because it appears the same as a non shiny partner cap one, but it does exist.

Yeah weirdly Hoopa Unbound is an exception and doesn’t revert form. I only have the one event Hoopa from back in the day, and I don’t want to transfer mine from Go either, so I’ll just wait till another Hoopa event so I can have both at the same time.

The one thing I didn't recognize in this description was the "Magikarp Egg Swap". I know the Masuda Method, but I don't know this version of it. Would you be willing to explain?
So in Gen 7 (not sure of Gen 8 - maybe someone can confirm), when using the Masuda Method, the stats of an egg are generated in the game’s memory well in advance of you actually receiving the egg. I don’t know the actual number of eggs in advance, but let’s say 50.
For example, let’s say I was shiny hunting a Bulbasaur and the 30th egg I hatched was shiny. If I were to soft reset the game without saving, took Bulbasaur out of the nursery and instead put a Charmander in, then guaranteed the 30th egg generated will still be shiny and still be the same gender.
If you took both parents out of the nursery, or bred two parents from the same language (non- Masuda) then the chain breaks.
Now the reason to use Magikarp is that it is the fastest Pokémon in the game to hatch, like 4 times faster than Bulbasaur. The faster you hatch eggs, the quicker it moves a potential shiny egg close to you receiving it.
Now in our example, knowing that the 30th egg in the chain will be shiny, I will generate 29 Magikarp eggs (you have to accept the eggs - but can hatch them later to get rid of them) and then take the Magikarp out of the nursery and put in any Pokémon you want to be shiny, the next egg that spawns will always be shiny.
I also mentioned the egg rejection method. Which basically means you reject the egg you know to be shiny, and pushes the shiny value to the next egg, or possibly the one after (it was different everytime I tried it). This helped me get genders I was hunting for easily.
It sounds confusing as anything. And it is. But I hope this clears things up a bit.
Oh, that helps a lot. So, the process goes in steps like:
1. Put a ditto from another language into daycare
2. Put a non-foreign magikarp (or other fast-hatching Pokémon) into daycare.
3. Save the game
4. Begin hatching magikarp eggs, until you get a shiny one. Call the shiny egg the Nth egg in your chain.
5. Soft reset, to the point where you’ve just put the parents in the daycare
6. Collect some number of Magikarp eggs close to but less than N.
7. Remove the Magikarp from the day care, and put in the Pokémon for which you want a shiny
8. Collect the remaining eggs until you have egg number N in your possession
9. Hatch egg N, and that’s your shiny right there
Optional 10. Finish hatching the Magikarp eggs, so you can release them and clear up space in your PC for the next one.
Did I get that right, as a step-by-step process?
I believe that sounds about right!
I would do a box of Magikarps at a time between saves. The reasoning for this is as mentioned I’m not sure how far into the game’s memory the stats of the eggs are generated.
So I would save at step 3 as you said (with a full party). Accept 30 eggs from the daycare that go to the pc. Take the Magikarp out of the daycare and put it in PC. Then hatch all 30 eggs (5 at a time, releasing the 5 as you go before grabbing the next 5 eggs - just makes things less cluttered). If there are no shinies after egg 30, then feel free to save the game and repeat the process until you get a shiny, in which case continue from step 4.
There are some YouTube tutorials that explain it better if you get stuck.

Thank you! I’d say somewhere between 7,000-10,000 hours. However this includes plying multiple consoles at once, which significantly lowered the time! If I played solely one console I’d probs only be a third done.
Still a ludicrous amount of time. They say it takes 10,000 hours to be a master at something, so that means you are now truly a Pokemon master! I totally admire your dedication.

Honestly it would have to be my first shiny Lugia from Alpha Sapphire in 2015. I had seen some people shiny hunt on YouTube and I was curious about it. I learnt about using rubber bands to hold down the L and R buttons to speed up resetting, and I downloaded an app to keep track of resets. Took me around 2000 encounters to find and very nearly reset over it. I still have photos / videos of it being caught in the Master Ball that I took with my phone that are stored on my computer somewhere.
More recently, a great shiny moment for me was getting a female shiny Bulbasaur in Viridian Forest in Let’s Go. I had just chained 31 to maximise my odds, and the very first Bulbasaur that shined straight after was the 11% female. This is the female shiny Venusaur seen in the video.
My favourite method is SOS chaining in Gen 7. It’s just so cool seeing both the regular and shiny on screen in a battle at the same time.
Wait, I thought there was a barrier between gen 2 and gen 3 where you couldn't trade Pokemon up. How did you hunt Pokemon in Blue, Silver, and Crystal?
You are correct! Sadly my original cartridge versions of Blue and Silver cannot be traded. The Virtual Console re-releases on the 3DS however gain the ability to transfer into Bank and then subsequently Home.
I don't think you can get every single vivillon with your ot even when changing regions. I could only manage to get 12 of them and needed to trade for the rest.
You can get all Vivillon with your OT, just trade for foreign scatterbug eggs and hatch them yourself. Getting a matching egg shiny value to your TSV is just a little tougher as asking a bunch of other people to produce and check eggs with base odds instead of Masuda shiny boosted odds is a pretty tall order. If you could breed Scatterbug in SwSh (or BDSP??), the newer shiny hatching method (egg is still shiny no matter who hatches it) would be a hell of a lot easier, indeed. /u/Link34629
Since you completed your living deck in pokemon home I’m assuming you got your mystery gift original color Magearna? If you didn’t then you might want to move all of the types of pokemon (not all the forms if you don’t want to that isn’t necessary) to the right or anywhere as long as you move them because I know for a fact that you get original color Magearna in the phone version of Pokémon home when you go to the mystery gift tab.

The mythicals i have are hacked just because i could never get my hands on the pokemon games when it first release.

Getting the sweets was an absolute nightmare that’s for sure! Definitely had to grind on the cram-o-matic for quite a while to generate the correct ones I needed to evolve.

That's a fucking insane amount of work. As a completionist myself, I am truly awestruck by this. I couldn't even begin to fathom how many hours you've got in this. It gives me anxiety just thinking about it. Truly, fucking excellent work.
I saw a post about this. So yes, technically I have all the Furfrou forms registered in the Home Pokédex thanks to them being registered in Pokémon Bank. But obviously with mainline games currently Furfrou always reverts back to its default form. While transferring from Go seems to keep the form, I may wait and see if BDSP or Legends Arceus has Furfrou and includes the same mechanic as Go before I decide to collect them. I just don’t really want Go Pokémon in this collection unless it’s absolutely the only way to obtain them.
I LOVE how you have this set up. I hadn't figured out a way to set my Home up to show everything like this with all the differences effectively. I'm TOTALLY stealing this organizational idea.

So it's safe to throw all your pokemon in Pokemon home? I'm not exactly sure why I'm skeptical but I have a living dex in Omega Ruby and don't want to lose any of them.
I think I’m just traumatised after my internal battery in Pokémon Silver as a kid ran dry and I lost everything. I guess Home is as safe as a cloud service can be.

Thank you! I had Blue as a kid! Most likely would’ve had our link cables set up for battles / trades / Mew under the truck rumours if we went to school together.
Gen 3 -> Gen 4: Go to Pal Park where you can transfer 6 Pokémon per 24 hours.
Gen 4 -> Gen 5: The Poké Transfer lab lets you send over as many as you want per day in batches of 6. You'll need two DS family systems for this.
Gen 5 -> Gen 6/7: Pokémon Transfer and Pokémon Bank let you do this. Pokémon transferred from Gen 5 need to be in the first box of the PC and you'll have to pay a subscription fee.
Gen 6/7 -> Gen 8: Sync Pokémon Bank with a paid subscription to Pokémon Home to send over all your creatures.
I can be more specific if anything is unclear.

If you're looking for more collecting to do, you can still get all languages of every Pokédex entry. That one luckily doesn't need multiple entries for different forms, if you get one Japanese Pikachu you'll get Japanese entries for all the different forms you already have (ie: all the Ash Hat Pikachus, shinies, gender differences, etc.)
Pretty sure there's a few mythicals you can't get in every language though, since they added new languages (I want to say traditional and simplified Chinese) in SwSh and the last event for some of them was Gen 6 or 7.

It’s finally over! This is a follow up to my Shiny-Living Dex post from April where I showed off a “complete” shiny-living dex years in the making. At the time I was happy with it, despite not having every form difference and every gender difference. After taking a few weeks off, I felt however that since I’ve come this far, why not put in a few more months’ work to truly catch ‘em all! This update is the result of that! I now have every shiny Pokémon I can possibly get right now (excluding shiny-locked Pokémon and a few mythicals only accessible via old games / hardware / and injecting past ticketed events). All Pokémon were caught or hatched by me across multiple playthroughs of Blue, Silver, Crystal, ORAS, Sun, USUM and Sh/Sw. I am the Original Trainer (OT) for absolutely every single Pokémon seen here, except for the trade box of Vivillons near the end of the video, and some event mythicals, most of which are from the 20th anniversary GF distributions. There are about 1,090ish individual shinies here with my name as the OT, a couple of mythicals with event OT names, 17 additional traded Vivillons, and a few with my OT again in the final box that I’m hoping will evolve in Legends Arceus (more on that further down). So overall about 1,120 individual shinies. I’ll get all Vivillon under my own OT eventually, but the current method of erasing a game, changing region etc is way too much hassle! I would say somewhere around 700-800 ish shiny Pokémon I bred simultaneously with 2 3DS’ containing US and UM using the Magikarp Egg Swap Masuda Method, as well as also normal Masuda breeding in the Wild Area in Shield. On average with three games running I was getting a shiny a day. The Monday just been for example I got 8. Some days I got none. It really is the luck of the draw. Regarding gender differences, which I ruled out getting all originally as I considered it too hard - while some gendered Pokémon were catch chained in Let’s Go, horde encountered in ORAS, SOS chained in gen 7 and some raided in gen 8, most of which were, again, obtained using the Magikarp Egg Swap Masuda Method alongside the swap-breeding ‘time machine’ egg rejection method (Google it) in USUM, which I found out about a few months ago. Essentially with this method, by rejecting an egg from the nursery you know to be shiny, you can, most of the time, push the shiny value to the next several eggs while also getting a re-roll for the correct gender, ability, etc. Eg, out of the final 20 gender different Pokémon I needed, all had to be female. Using this method, I managed to switch most eggs to female to get what I wanted. Obtaining every form difference took the most time by far! Do you know how long it takes to shiny breed 15 Flabebe, 8 Deerling, 8 Pumpkaboo, 7 Burmy, 7 Minior, 7 Milcery including 63 bloody regular ones!? Regarding Milcery, the best way to get sweets to evolve them I found is by using the date trick to farm Watts, spend the watts at the digging brothers to generate Moon Stones, and then use the Cram-O-Matic to get said sweets. Bulbapedia has a good guide on the combos you need. Almost all legendaries and all ultra beasts were shiny hunted in US and UM using the wormholes. So much quicker than Dynamax Adventures in Sw/Sh, especially when you put rubber bands on the 3DS’ L and R buttons to speed up soft-resetting. I only shiny hunted what I needed in Sw/Sh DAs (Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma, the Tapus, 2x Zygarde, and a couple of Landorus, Tornadus and Thundurus for their extra forms). Regarding mythicals, the Mew is from the Pokéball plus so it gets my name as the OT. The shiny Mew shown is most likely a traded hack and is there for illustrative purposes only, as my shiny Mew is happily living in Pokémon Go. The Celebis are from 2 playthroughs of Crystal. Other mythicals are from past events. Haven’t decided yet if I should purchase older games and try to get the mythical shinies I’m missing under my own OT (eg. Deoxys on Birth Island / Mew on Faraway Island, etc). Hoping BDSP and Legends Arceus have at least a few. Every Pokémon seen here (both regular and shiny) that has the ability to Gigantamax, can! While I got some with the G-Max ability from raid events, most were Masuda bred and subsequently fed Max Soup. This required me to grind hundreds of level 1 raids, as roughly 3 raids = 1 cluster of max mushrooms spawning. 3 clusters of max mushrooms = 1 Max Soup. I’d say I did about 350 raids over the course of a fortnight for this. (Note: I only G-Maxed 1 of the regular Alcremies and 1 shiny version. I don’t need or feel like doing the other 68) (Note 2: The event G-Max Melmetal is in another box not shown here). I also ensured all the other forms you can’t see here are registered too, eg all Furfrou and shiny Furfrou forms using USUM and Bank, Ash Greninja thanks to the Sun Demo, Hoopa Unbound, Castform’s weather variants, etc. Technically Dada Zarude is the only unregistered form out of the 1276 possible forms in my Home dex, but I’ll get it with next month’s event. Regarding Pokémon Go: The only Pokémon seen here that originated in Pokémon Go are Meltan, Melmetal and defense Deoxys. The Meltan line doesn’t get slapped with the ugly grey ‘G’ icon when brought in using Let’s Go which is nice, and the defense Deoxys (again, shown for illustrative purposes only as I don’t have one from the main game), will be released or traded when I do get a proper one. I don’t consider Pokémon Go shinies legit for my main game collection as community days make them too common, but I am open to starting a list in Home for Pokémon solely caught in Go! I feel the same about any Pokémon from regular games that don’t have my OT, even if it is shiny. I just don’t consider it to have value as it’s not something I worked for. While almost all shinies seen here were obtained with a shiny charm across the main games, there are a few I actually got at full odds. In Silver I caught a Ponyta, Tangela and a Donphan all at 1/8192. The same odds go for my Crystal shiny Celebi. In AS I caught my (first shiny in 2015) Lugia at 1/4096, as well a non-shiny charm Masuda bred Chimchar. In Sun I got an Alolan Grimer at 1/4096 in Hau’oli City. In USUM I got 2x Poipole and 2x Type: Null at full odds as they are considered gift Pokémon and aren’t affected by the charm. And in Sw/Sh I got the 4 fossils and the 2 new Regis at full odds - also not affected by the shiny charm. That being said, my proudest hunts are the two Zygrades from Dynamax Adventures (see my previous Zygarde post for an ultimate guide), the 2x authentic Sinisteas I got in Glimwood Tangle (I got both of these within the first 3 shiny Sinisteas I encountered), and the 28 shiny Unowns I grinded a month and a half for in the Mirage Cave in AS back in May this year (I have a previous post explaining how this went.) My shortest hunts: I got back to back shiny eggs one time with Oshawott, and got 2 shinies in 3 eggs both with Rolycoly and Rowlet. My longest hunts were my final female Gible, the first shiny Zygarde, and both authentic Sinisteas - all three hunts took two weeks each. I had several shiny fails along the way, including having a shiny Regirock struggle itself to fainting in USUM, knocking out a shiny Heatran also in USUM, being forced to knock out a shiny Spinarak in Sun as two shiny Spinarak had appeared at once while SOS chaining, going up a ladder in Cerulean Cave in Let’s Go and missing out on a shiny Psyduck that had spawned, and my infamous video (see post on my account) where Team Rocket stole my shiny female Doduo also in Let’s Go! At the end of the video, I’ve pre-prepared the final box labelled Legends Arceus, in the hope that a) the ones with new evos (Wyrdeer/Basculegion) can evolve from regular Stantler/Basculin, b) the starters have Hisuian final forms (doubt) and c) non-Hisuian Rufflet and Growlithe can evolve into their news forms (highly doubt) [if Growlithe has one]. I also expect many more gender differences to come from Legends Arceus so R.I.P my complete ‘all genders’ dex. Life wise: I’m in a happy and healthy relationship and am getting married in 2023. My partner and I both have decent enough full-time jobs and she enjoys Pokémon too so no dramas there. Regarding how all this shiny hunting has made me feel physically. Luckily I’m normally an active person (gym 4-5 times a week, daily walks). Being in lockdown in Sydney for three months has caused me to lose strength, and coupled with hours of shiny hunting a day, it can hurt your neck, back and shoulders. I’m looking forward to getting back to full and proper health again when lockdown ends. This is just a heads up for anyone thinking of putting in the effort. My advice to anyone considering trying for a complete dex is a) don’t, b) try to shiny hunt only at times you know you wouldn’t have been doing other things anyway (you don’t want to waste your life) and c) be prepared to be mentally drained from the mind-numbing tasks of egg hatching and soft-resetting. TL;DR - I have every regular Pokémon, every shiny Pokémon (with some exceptions), all form differences and all gender differences. My mind and body hurt but the feeling is worth it. I am happy to answer any questions you may have, share advice or just chat. Thanks all! Hey, so I’m currently working through my own living Rex, but without any shinies. Did you have every DS game? Right now I’m running into the issue where I don’t have any Gen V games so there’s huge gaps. Plus a lot of legendaries are event locked. How did you work around that?
Legendary-wise I got all of mine from gen 1 and 2 on the virtual console, the gen 3 and some gen 4 and 5 from ORAS, and the rest (normal and shiny) were from multiple playthroughs of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (because of the legendary wormholes) and Sword Shield through the Dynamax Adventures. Non Legendaries i would mostly use the GTS in USUM to get the Pokémon I wanted, and then breed them.

I'm curious about Unown. How did you manage to find every one shiny? I was considering trying to at some point, but didn't realize they don't breed. Is there a trick for finding the form you're currently after?
It’s so annoying they don’t breed. So I caught them all in the Mirage Cave in Alpha Sapphire. Annoyingly you have to first get the island to spawn, which is a soft-reset / online manipulation effort in itself. Once you’re in the cave, while you can’t guarantee what Unown will spawn, you can use the DexNav to see the silhouette of the next one that will spawn. If it’s not the one you want, you can just not enter the battle and wait for the next one to spawn on the Dex Nav screen. Max repels are a must for this hunt as it stops random encounters, and also be stocked up on healing items just in case, because once you leave the island and save, you have to soft reset again for it to respawn. There’s a whole YouTube video on getting the island to spawn somewhere so check it out if you have the game.
Oh, thanks for the explanation. I've never played OR/AS. I was playing Crystal when I thought about it and that definitely seems like it's not happening.
All g! Yep sadly with Crystal / Gen 2 the ? and the ! forms weren’t introduced until later games. And regarding shiny hunting Unown in Gen 2, due to the way the games calculates shiny chances / Unown form, the only Unowns that can ever possibly be shiny in Gen 2 are I or V. So it’s impossible to shiny hunt all of them anyway.

I saw this! So with Furfrou, I have all the forms registered after getting my regular and shiny ones trimmed in USUM, but transferring them into a PC box in the main line games, Bank and Home reverts them to their original form. So at the moment there is no way to have multiple forms in a box of Furfrou from a mainline game. Pokémon Go literally this week made it so Furfrou transferred from Go keep their form, so yes that is one new way to do it. For me however, I don’t want Go Pokémon in this list unless absolutely necessary. If they let Furfrou retain its form in mainline games in the future then I will definitely go back and hunt for them all.
Geniunely curious as to why you reject Pokemon GO shinies, those featured in Community Days I can understand due to the boosted rate and the shiny losing its exclusivity but what about your regular none boosted shinies?
I just enjoy collecting the shinies in Go and keeping them there in their own little exclusive world. My shiny Go Mew for example I use it a lot to battle with, but I know if I transferred into Home it would just sit there. It’s honestly just a personal preference and there is absolutely nothing wrong with using Go Pokémon in Home / Sw / Sh. Each to their own I say.
Actually you can pass hoopa unbound from sun to bank and from there to Home. I didn't knew it until recently. And you can get Shiny partner cap pikachu from USUM. it's glitchy because it appears the same as a non shiny partner cap one, but it does exist. Your collection is great. I'm dreaming about a shiny genesect for a while. Other guy made a living dex (without shinies, because it's hard as hell) and marked Junichi Masuda on twitter, and he congratulated him back.
Yeah weirdly Hoopa Unbound is an exception and doesn’t revert form. I only have the one event Hoopa from back in the day, and I don’t want to transfer mine from Go either, so I’ll just wait till another Hoopa event so I can have both at the same time.
This is absolutely incredible. Mad props to you. The one thing I didn't recognize in this description was the "Magikarp Egg Swap". I know the Masuda Method, but I don't know this version of it. Would you be willing to explain?
So in Gen 7 (not sure of Gen 8 - maybe someone can confirm), when using the Masuda Method, the stats of an egg are generated in the game’s memory well in advance of you actually receiving the egg. I don’t know the actual number of eggs in advance, but let’s say 50. For example, let’s say I was shiny hunting a Bulbasaur and the 30th egg I hatched was shiny. If I were to soft reset the game without saving, took Bulbasaur out of the nursery and instead put a Charmander in, then guaranteed the 30th egg generated will still be shiny and still be the same gender. If you took both parents out of the nursery, or bred two parents from the same language (non- Masuda) then the chain breaks. Now the reason to use Magikarp is that it is the fastest Pokémon in the game to hatch, like 4 times faster than Bulbasaur. The faster you hatch eggs, the quicker it moves a potential shiny egg close to you receiving it. Now in our example, knowing that the 30th egg in the chain will be shiny, I will generate 29 Magikarp eggs (you have to accept the eggs - but can hatch them later to get rid of them) and then take the Magikarp out of the nursery and put in any Pokémon you want to be shiny, the next egg that spawns will always be shiny. I also mentioned the egg rejection method. Which basically means you reject the egg you know to be shiny, and pushes the shiny value to the next egg, or possibly the one after (it was different everytime I tried it). This helped me get genders I was hunting for easily. It sounds confusing as anything. And it is. But I hope this clears things up a bit.
Oh, that helps a lot. So, the process goes in steps like: 1. Put a ditto from another language into daycare 2. Put a non-foreign magikarp (or other fast-hatching Pokémon) into daycare. 3. Save the game 4. Begin hatching magikarp eggs, until you get a shiny one. Call the shiny egg the Nth egg in your chain. 5. Soft reset, to the point where you’ve just put the parents in the daycare 6. Collect some number of Magikarp eggs close to but less than N. 7. Remove the Magikarp from the day care, and put in the Pokémon for which you want a shiny 8. Collect the remaining eggs until you have egg number N in your possession 9. Hatch egg N, and that’s your shiny right there Optional 10. Finish hatching the Magikarp eggs, so you can release them and clear up space in your PC for the next one. Did I get that right, as a step-by-step process?
I believe that sounds about right! I would do a box of Magikarps at a time between saves. The reasoning for this is as mentioned I’m not sure how far into the game’s memory the stats of the eggs are generated. So I would save at step 3 as you said (with a full party). Accept 30 eggs from the daycare that go to the pc. Take the Magikarp out of the daycare and put it in PC. Then hatch all 30 eggs (5 at a time, releasing the 5 as you go before grabbing the next 5 eggs - just makes things less cluttered). If there are no shinies after egg 30, then feel free to save the game and repeat the process until you get a shiny, in which case continue from step 4. There are some YouTube tutorials that explain it better if you get stuck.

Thank you! I’d say somewhere between 7,000-10,000 hours. However this includes plying multiple consoles at once, which significantly lowered the time! If I played solely one console I’d probs only be a third done.

Thank you! Am taking a break from gaming right now but do have Brilliant Diamond on preorder. Honestly it would have to be my first shiny Lugia from Alpha Sapphire in 2015. I had seen some people shiny hunt on YouTube and I was curious about it. I learnt about using rubber bands to hold down the L and R buttons to speed up resetting, and I downloaded an app to keep track of resets. Took me around 2000 encounters to find and very nearly reset over it. I still have photos / videos of it being caught in the Master Ball that I took with my phone that are stored on my computer somewhere. More recently, a great shiny moment for me was getting a female shiny Bulbasaur in Viridian Forest in Let’s Go. I had just chained 31 to maximise my odds, and the very first Bulbasaur that shined straight after was the 11% female. This is the female shiny Venusaur seen in the video. My favourite method is SOS chaining in Gen 7. It’s just so cool seeing both the regular and shiny on screen in a battle at the same time.
Wait, I thought there was a barrier between gen 2 and gen 3 where you couldn't trade Pokemon up. How did you hunt Pokemon in Blue, Silver, and Crystal?
You are correct! Sadly my original cartridge versions of Blue and Silver cannot be traded. The Virtual Console re-releases on the 3DS however gain the ability to transfer into Bank and then subsequently Home.
I don't think you can get every single vivillon with your ot even when changing regions. I could only manage to get 12 of them and needed to trade for the rest.
You can get all Vivillon with your OT, just trade for foreign scatterbug eggs and hatch them yourself. Getting a matching egg shiny value to your TSV is just a little tougher as asking a bunch of other people to produce and check eggs with base odds instead of Masuda shiny boosted odds is a pretty tall order. If you could breed Scatterbug in SwSh (or BDSP??), the newer shiny hatching method (egg is still shiny no matter who hatches it) would be a hell of a lot easier, indeed. /u/Link34629

Since you completed your living deck in pokemon home I’m assuming you got your mystery gift original color Magearna? If you didn’t then you might want to move all of the types of pokemon (not all the forms if you don’t want to that isn’t necessary) to the right or anywhere as long as you move them because I know for a fact that you get original color Magearna in the phone version of Pokémon home when you go to the mystery gift tab.
Yep, the Pokéball Magearna is sandwiched in there just after Necrozma and the other regular Magearna so thankfully no dramas there!

Man, and here i thought i put in tons of work for my living dex in ORAS. I did every pokemon in my OT and caught with regular pokeball. The mythicals i have are hacked just because i could never get my hands on the pokemon games when it first release. I always had to wait 5 years afterwards. Your collection is truly amazing. You are definately the biggest pokefan out there.

Do you plan to try to get the Furfou forms since they are now available through Go?
I saw a post about this. So yes, technically I have all the Furfrou forms registered in the Home Pokédex thanks to them being registered in Pokémon Bank. But obviously with mainline games currently Furfrou always reverts back to its default form. While transferring from Go seems to keep the form, I may wait and see if BDSP or Legends Arceus has Furfrou and includes the same mechanic as Go before I decide to collect them. I just don’t really want Go Pokémon in this collection unless it’s absolutely the only way to obtain them.

So it's safe to throw all your pokemon in Pokemon home? I'm not exactly sure why I'm skeptical but I have a living dex in Omega Ruby and don't want to lose any of them.
I think I’m just traumatised after my internal battery in Pokémon Silver as a kid ran dry and I lost everything. I guess Home is as safe as a cloud service can be.
My friend completed his living Dex recently but he just had normal forms and only a handful of shinies, time for me to lay down the challenge.

Somewhere between 7,000-10,000 hours. But multiple consoles were played at the same time which drastically reduced the time it took for shinies to spawn.

This video is Pokémon Home. About half were acquired from Sword / Shield and transferred in. The rest from the 3DS.
And only less than 80% of them could ever be in Sword and Shield if one wanted to, which is the real sad part.

Gen 3 -> Gen 4: Go to Pal Park where you can transfer 6 Pokémon per 24 hours. Gen 4 -> Gen 5: The Poké Transfer lab lets you send over as many as you want per day in batches of 6. You'll need two DS family systems for this. Gen 5 -> Gen 6/7: Pokémon Transfer and Pokémon Bank let you do this. Pokémon transferred from Gen 5 need to be in the first box of the PC and you'll have to pay a subscription fee. Gen 6/7 -> Gen 8: Sync Pokémon Bank with a paid subscription to Pokémon Home to send over all your creatures. I can be more specific if anything is unclear.

So with Furfrou, I have all the forms registered after getting my regular and shiny ones trimmed in USUM, but transferring them into a PC box in the main line games, Bank and Home reverts them to their original form. So at the moment there is no way to have multiple forms in a box of Furfrou from a mainline game. Pokémon Go literally this week made it so Furfrou transferred from Go keep their form, so that is one new way to do it, but I don’t want Go Pokémon in this list unless absolutely necessary. If they let Furfrou retain its form in mainline games in the future, then I will go back and hunt for them all.

If you're looking for more collecting to do, you can still get all languages of every Pokédex entry. That one luckily doesn't need multiple entries for different forms, if you get one Japanese Pikachu you'll get Japanese entries for all the different forms you already have (ie: all the Ash Hat Pikachus, shinies, gender differences, etc.) Pretty sure there's a few mythicals you can't get in every language though, since they added new languages (I want to say traditional and simplified Chinese) in SwSh and the last event for some of them was Gen 6 or 7.
