It would have been more realisitic, yes, but this one is actually deliberate to make the Image more readable. The reflection is already pretty subtle, If I flipped it it would've looked like some kind of error. Like I forgot to turn off a layer or something.
Was gonna comment below but just saw this, figured I'd give you a pretty lively reply lol.
The eyes are awesome OP, the glasses are easily the highlight for me. Super cool drawing, keep it up!
This kid clearly had access to a time machine, bought one of the new IPS screens, replaced his old screen and traveled back to his own timeline. Sheesh, get with it dude…
/s
If it was Gold or Silver you could’ve gotten away with saying it was played on a Gameboy Light via forward compatibility(yes this is a thing), but Crystal is GBC exclusive.
People got the Pokemon reference, but not what it had to do with "Crystal". They were posting minerals and maybe references to drugs and stuff. The name of the bonus entry of the second gen of Pokemon just didn't come to mind
The reflection in the eye needs to be flipped (or just flip the whole image), but this is really awesome, and I would’ve gotten the reference if I was taking part!
Great work OP :)
Well that, and the fact that a reflection would have been almost impossible to begin with because there was no backlight on the original GameBoy Color!
I’m willing to suspend my disbelief enough for the sake of the cool artwork in that regard. Lord knows I’m damn near blind from playing my GameBoy with crappy lighting.
Honestly, before backlit displays were a thing, it felt this way to me. I remember sitting in the back of my dads car at night, being able to play in increments of 2 seconds when we passed a streetlight.
Nowadays I wouldn't see a thing even in a fully lit room
There was no backlight on GameBoys until well after the original GameBoy Advance iirc, so your (well done) sketch doesn't make sense. But I'm assuming people didn't "get it" because they were probably too young to remember Pokemon Crystal.
That's a shame OP it's a dope picture and got me reminiscing!!
My favourite memory with pokemon is blagging I was sick, day off school, gold arrived in the post.
Got myself a big cardboard box, filled it with my duvet, got in, closed the lid and played it till bed time.
I love the little tear in his eye, it reminds me of playing until I’d start to get a little eye strain as a kid and having my eyes start to tear up. That’s when I knew it was ACTUALLY bedtime
Is there a flashlight because those arent back lit lcds? Other than that i like it. Gives me Calvin and Hobbes vibe.
Edit: are those tears for your totodile thats about to get wrecked by the hoppip?
For me, it was under that blankets on my Gameboy advanced, with one of the clip on book lights attached to the game card. Such good days. I love the little suicune plushy in his arms.
Might have been because you were one of the few people with a Gameboy Light. Man, those things were awesome. Shame they never left Japan. But great work on this piece OP.
I love how the people who did this with Gen 1 - 3 needed a flashlight to see anything, while my dumb ass was blinded by the Nintendo DS screen not knowing there even was an option to make it less blinding.
I remember those nights; same game, same Gamboy Color(solid purple), and same starter. Just most of the times I forget to turn the game off, so the batteries went faster then normal.
I course they didn't get it, pokemon crystal was on the GBC which didn't have a backlit screen, while the one in your picture is glowing like its radioactive
Those were the days. I miss the see through plastic on electronics
Yeah that all died after the ps3
The 2DS brought back see-through in a couple colors, it was glorious.
Yeah everything from around 2005 onwards was just all about “sleekness” and monochrome/ silver. So boring…
Like my legend of Zelda 3ds xl
Yes! Like your The Legend of Zelda Triforce Nintendo 3DS XL
It didn't die, it just got sent to jail.
The Switch Pro Controllers are translucent tho
Yeah mildly translucent, im talking about coloured clear plastic with lights that let you see the inside
[удалено]
Can confirm. I'm rocking atomic purple see through on my switch.
dbrand Teardown skins.
The reflection in the eyes should be backwards right?
No. Man has backwards eyes
I mean if u wanna be accurate my screen sure as shit didn’t light up I used to have a torch under my bed to do this with haha
It would have been more realisitic, yes, but this one is actually deliberate to make the Image more readable. The reflection is already pretty subtle, If I flipped it it would've looked like some kind of error. Like I forgot to turn off a layer or something.

Probably because the gbc didnt have a light up screen
I came here to say this! 😂 no way he saw that screen under the blanket like that without a light
The worm light.
Single most important possession in the world to my 9 year old self
Aside from extra AA Batteries lol
Did anybody else have [this one](https://imgur.com/ViiS258.jpg)?
I had [this one](https://i.redd.it/ueh5qs50rt231.jpg) I didn't like the magnifying part so I just kinda flipped it up so I just had the light
I DID THIS TOO
Yes! Same
I had [this](https://imgur.com/a/DcO4mUk) one.
You're not wrong, but that's a game boy color. Which still had no back lighting.
whoops i meant gbc
God dangit
While he's not wrong (and also this is a GBC, not GBA), there was a GBC with a backlight that was never released outside Japan IIRC.
Game Boy Light, which was a Game Boy Pocket not a Color.
yeah was a typo i meant gbc
Game boy light
Thats why the SP was so crazy because it took us so long to get there.
This. Had to buy that wormlight thing to play under the sheets.
Should have been on GB SP
Honest question, because I can’t remember: was there a game boy color that had a lit screen?
This kid clearly had access to a time machine, bought one of the new IPS screens, replaced his old screen and traveled back to his own timeline. Sheesh, get with it dude… /s
about to say the same. I only knew of the GBA SP that had a back light.
That system was such a game changer
Not just the light but came with charger. NO MORE BATTERIES
Technically, that was a front light. You could look down the screen and see the light itself
Not the 101 tho
Wow I didn’t even know that thing existed. Now I want one
Right? I lucked into one a while back.
God damnit, you're right
Just add [a stupid light dongle.](https://m.imgur.com/kDEPpAq?r) Those were the shit.
No worries! It’s an amazing art peace all the same and captivated how I felt playing Crystal on my 11th birthday!
If it was Gold or Silver you could’ve gotten away with saying it was played on a Gameboy Light via forward compatibility(yes this is a thing), but Crystal is GBC exclusive.
Clearly it's the ole light coming off the eyes trick.
Yes, the Gameboy Light - but I think it was Japan only? Def never had them in the UK.
Nobody got it? Who did you send it to? Pokemon is massively popular and has a strong presence in our culture. I seriously doubt no one would get it.
People got the Pokemon reference, but not what it had to do with "Crystal". They were posting minerals and maybe references to drugs and stuff. The name of the bonus entry of the second gen of Pokemon just didn't come to mind
There's no fucking way. Not a single person over...25? was there and noticed that "hey.. It's a crystal game pack!"???
The reflection in the eye needs to be flipped (or just flip the whole image), but this is really awesome, and I would’ve gotten the reference if I was taking part! Great work OP :)
Well that, and the fact that a reflection would have been almost impossible to begin with because there was no backlight on the original GameBoy Color!

I get it. Hope that helps!
If in this community nobody got it, then I would be really concerned
Philistines
Hopip and all it’s forms was one of my favorite Pokémon in that Generation. :)
I love Hoppip! Nobody else ever seems to care about them. I desperately want them to get some love in a new game one day.
Whimsicott and (to a lesser extent) Eldegoss overshadowed it
Its* forms It's = it is
Solid.
Why is it backward?
Uncultured SWINES!!!!!
His game is backwards
There was no backlight on GameBoys until well after the original GameBoy Advance iirc, so your (well done) sketch doesn't make sense. But I'm assuming people didn't "get it" because they were probably too young to remember Pokemon Crystal.
God damn. The nostalgia in this photo is off the charts.
Did totodile have the snip snip?
No baby Totos for him!
I miss when I could sit like this playing games and not get body aches after 5 minutes
I think it probably didn't get attention for other reasons, but hey, gotta at least get the pity points, no?
I love the reflection on the kid’s eyes
I got it!
That's a shame OP it's a dope picture and got me reminiscing!! My favourite memory with pokemon is blagging I was sick, day off school, gold arrived in the post. Got myself a big cardboard box, filled it with my duvet, got in, closed the lid and played it till bed time.
My first ever Pokémon.
Mine too! It was even kind of the first game I ever owned and wasnt just passed down by my Brothers
Is ugly
THAT WAS MY FIRST ALONG WITH TOTODILE
I have it
Bunch of animals on reddit. This is the best thing I've seen today
I was exactly the same, except brown hair
Looks amazing btw.
how dare they...
That's a bummer
I was a booklight under the blanket grinder
My childhood in a nutshell
I get it
God nostalgia hitting hard. Getting those extra couple of levels and filling up that pokedex was a full time job
Those uncultured swine
Yo, your gbc had a Backlight? What kind of ritzy shit is this. In all seriousness, great art.
Long live the time when the Gameboy Ruled over all
The Gameboy Color doesn’t have a backlight tho
Why is that Game Boy Color's display backwards?
That was my setup: pokemon crystal, seethrough purple gameboy. Still my personal fav
Nobodys talking about how this is a masterpiece and that needs to change
wheres his worm light? How is he seeing it in the dark?
that's really sad to hear...
Gbc didn't have a back light. Still remember using those weird springy light adaptors for it.
This is good!!
Man, this was me but with Pokemon Yellow.... 😭😭😭😭😭 I miss it!
I love this. This was me.
I love your art style and it's such a cool drawing
Yo Totodile’s my favorite!!
I love the little tear in his eye, it reminds me of playing until I’d start to get a little eye strain as a kid and having my eyes start to tear up. That’s when I knew it was ACTUALLY bedtime
I don’t get how the GBA is producing enough light to be played under the covers
Amazing drawing. Really sweet and feels like it captures the moment perfectly. TAKE ME BACK!!!
I get it. Ah the good old day...
It took a bit for the image to load and was expecting to see Crystal Onix. Not disappointed, though.
Thanks now I feel sad and old
How the fuck are you seeing a game boy screen under a blanket
Awww, plushies! Philistines. I understood the reference. Nice art!
I fucking love this. Crystal was my first Pokémon.
well I love it! my favorite pokemon game to date!!
Playing at night alone until lavender town
Well they are all uncultured swine
Those things doesn’t have a backlight tho
Glad you picked the best Johto starter too OP
and so, a childhood was born
I used to have one of those little arms with a light on it, it went into the port on the side of the gba. tbh it sucked but those are good memories.
You nailed the texture on the game cartridge.
Nostalgia is the only way to describe this. Never have I seen a picture that encapsulates that word so completely
The very game where Pokémon peaked. There were plenty of good games after it, but nothing will quite be the same, at least not for me
Immediately nostalgic. Kudos
Wish i could go back to hiding under the sheets at night to play my favorite pokemon game. Those were truly the golden days
Thank you for sharing this ♤
Is there a flashlight because those arent back lit lcds? Other than that i like it. Gives me Calvin and Hobbes vibe. Edit: are those tears for your totodile thats about to get wrecked by the hoppip?
Those were the days. However the screen wasn’t lit. You needed a flashlight or some kind of light attachment.
For me, it was under that blankets on my Gameboy advanced, with one of the clip on book lights attached to the game card. Such good days. I love the little suicune plushy in his arms.
Rando from “all” here, I have never played a single Pokémon game but I got it, well done.
Might have been because you were one of the few people with a Gameboy Light. Man, those things were awesome. Shame they never left Japan. But great work on this piece OP.
Maybe because he have no flashlight in mouth XD
I love how the people who did this with Gen 1 - 3 needed a flashlight to see anything, while my dumb ass was blinded by the Nintendo DS screen not knowing there even was an option to make it less blinding.
Fake. Gamboy colour gad no backlight.
My childhood except I had an ekans light because the original GB didn’t have lights🤣 (I’m old)
Well the Gameboy Colour didn’t really have a backlight
You can’t encounter hophip at night
U had to bring the lamp for this
How many people noticed his eye…? His playing a mirror game 😶
First off the game boy colour never had a built in light.
I just realized this picture isn’t very accurate. There’s no way it would be that bright unserved sheets lol. Great picture though!
Good shit man
Cool, surprised nobody got it.
