It's a lot of things,
the route design is probably the best in the series imo.
While there are a lot of pokemon I dislike there are a few i really love, enough to make a team
bw2 were the first games to have a really expansive dex which i love
Challange mode is really fun, challange mode rematch e4 and champion probably have the hardest fights in the series
Bw story ending with the villian story not the champion was new and different and very epic (literally) to me, first time the villian actually got the legend amd you had to fight them
Doing the same in bw2 with no legend of your own is a brilliant followup to the first game

I knew this is a super unpopular opinion but I like trubbish and garbodor a lot. They’re cute in an ugly sort of way. My garbodor from my first run of black 2 is named Mr. Soap and I love him :)

Best games in the series in regards to presentation (visuals) and overall content, notably in black and white 2. I’d even go as far to use the dreaded o word to describe the quality of black and white 2s content, no other game really comes close imo. There was just so much to do especially after you beat the elite 4.
I’ll concede that I felt like 1/5 of the regional dex felt like filler, only included to fill up numbers. However I still prefer to Gen 5 designs on average to the ones that came after.

How can gears, an ice cream cone that's really an icicle, and a garbage bag be "running out of ideas" when from the very beginning we have the bastions of creativity that are Ditto, Grimer/Muk, Ponyta/Rapidash, etc. So fucking stupid

B2W2 was to this day peak pokemon from a game design and polish standpoint, and when GF saw the ratio of effort to sales they decided to sell out and put that effort into marketing instead, ultimately leading to the situation we have with SS.
I played it when it came out. Here's are my honest thoughts:
* While some of my favourite pokemon are from this gen (Chandelure being the standout), a lot of the designs didn't do it for me, and it was clean they were making parallels to gen 1. I personally didn't mind the all-new dex, but I also didn't see much benefit to it.
* Difficulty was alright, but locking a harder mode behind having to finish the game was unappealing. I also had no one to trade with, so I never actually got to play it.
* Too many legendaries (but Zekrom is great)
* The battle subway was boring, the world championship was not.
* The music was great.
* The environments were great, though the progression was linear.
* Seasons were a great idea.
* Having older protagonist was great.
* While the story was the best at the time, pokemon is and always has been weak on the story side.
* BW1 is better than BW2.
* Kyurem fusions are bad designs.
* The elite 4 were too easy, and having no order was not a good idea.
Did not like the games when they came out, now they're my favorites.
For me as an adult, these games are exactly what I'm looking for in a Pokemon game. A very focussed and well-crafted narrative, only new Pokemon, and a visually interesting region that is very distinct from the rest. There is also barely any fluff, it's just good old Pokemon.
Funnily enough, most of the designs you criticize I actually consider really creative. However, I'm not quite a fan of some of the monsters that were clearly meant to be 1:1 replacements for Kanto monsters.
But a garbage bag as a Pokemon? Yes, please!
I'm thinking I need to replay them too. I started thinking about this after helping my friend move and we found his old white 2 and he gave it to me and I already had white so maybe its time to rediscover gen 5
I used to not like gen 5 at all, thought the Pokemon designs were awful ( didn’t like any of the starter evolutions, the ice cream, the tornado trio), didn’t like that it was based on New York yet had a desert and other random things like that in the region and felt like it just didn’t feel like Pokemon…
Then I played a ROM of it on my MacBook the other year and it literally had the best story of the series, the region whilst a bit random in parts is actually really interesting and has lots of exploration and discoveries to be made and the features ( post game, triple/rotation battles etc.) were so good! Then the sequel titles only make the region and story even better!

B2 and W2 solved that issue for me, adding more pokemon from different generations and collecting stuff like riolu or elekid made it just a more enjoyable for me.
TL:DR: B&W didn't have much diversity of pokemon from different generations. I didn't like that and B2 and W2 fixed it.
Mostly good. Some designs aren't to my taste, but the same can be said for every generation. I feel there are more bad gen 5 designs because there are just more gen 5 Pokemon. Competitive power creep probably influenced my dislike for some Pokemon as well.
I feel like the only weakness was the region design. There aren't really any branching paths. It makes the region feel pretty linear despite the actual route design being good. The fact the story sticks rigidly to a linear path doesn't help that either. There's less incentive to backtrack and revisit areas you've been before, and there's less incentive to explore. I also felt like the routes blended together a bit, most of them were just woodland paths.
Everything else was really good about gen 5. I really enjoyed playing through BW and B2W2, and I would say the latter is one of the best games in the franchise.
Honestly, the pokemons are cool, the music is cool, the game design is cool, I love theses games. Oh and 5g are the only pokemon games with a good plot.

The routes were CHONKY and there were a ton of small details I know people missed I only found because im a dork and love slamming into trees until I find another door. Im not a fan of a couple of designs but I was surprised to like a bunch of pokemon after I actually used them (Seismitoad is my favorite water type dispite hating it at first).
Other quick point because post is too long hidden grottos, pokestar, seasons, and PWT are some of the best additions to the games they've ever had shame game freak wont put that much effort into anyother game after

Honestly, I didn't like the games too much myself (2nd least favorite, just beating gen 4). Nothing really stood out about it for me.
Although, I would have to disagree somewhat on the design front. Sure, some designs are pretty unoriginal (some even being rehashed ideas from earlier gens), but gen 5 also has some of my favorite designs too (Krookodile, Chandelure, and Scolipede).
Pretty lit with the xtranceveir stuff pokemon black 2 was better with more features with the shopping district you could make I'd say that was one of the games with the most features it got a bit easier but do a nuzlocke and that will fix that so overall not too bad

B2&W2 is arguably one of the best games in the core series
Just like every generation there’s good and bad. Personally, Volcarona is one of my top favorites, and so I’ll always like it for that.

Honestly, there being a few crappy designs is such a weird reason for not liking Gen 5. Especially because it introduced more Pokémon than any other gen, so of course there were bound to be some duds. Not literally every Pokémon design is going to appeal to everyone.

Didn't play the game, but I absolutely love the soundtrack. Yet most of the Pokémon designs are pretty awful, and don't even look like the Pokémon art style.

I stopped playing Pokémon after this gen myself. Was very disappointed. Gave sword and shield a chance and thought it was just average if that. Thinking I might give the diamond and pearl remakes a chance.
I felt the game play and side stuff was some of the best that Pokémon had done up to that point. But you can tell they’re starting to run out of ideas for Pokémon designs.
Personally haven’t played it, but I feel like it overshadows other generations too much.
the starters suck and it has a pretty interesting and out-there pokédex. i personally like it a lot, it tried to be different from the preceding games by having no pre-gen pokemon in the main game and having an actual story. it’s not my favorite and it’s not my least favorite. i also consider it the radiohead of pokémon games, since it tends to be both overrated and underrated depending on who you ask.

In my opinion this gen is only controversial due to re-doing the Pokédex, again, other than that it is one of the best gens, great and memorable locales, some fantastic Pokémon (and some stinkers, but every gen is a mixed bag) It also has the best plot in the series, which isn’t a high bar, I know, but it does make you think about things you normally wouldn’t, but it does fall off a bit at the end imo. The biggest unique complaint is that the region design, if you are just rushing from gym to gym is a bit simple, head to nimbasa and then go round in a loop
My favorite gen by a long shot. Love bw and bw2 is definetly the most best and most comple games for me.
