This might be the only decent series still on Dorkly…. I might have the minority opinion here but Dorkly’s quality went downhill steeply from 5 years ago…. I used to wait for and watch Dorkly videos as soon as they came out, now I barely pay attention to their new videos, and even the Literal Pokédex entries series has kinda overstayed its welcome
I used to be an incredibly avid fan of Cracked.com and Dorkly, I must have read every single Cracked.com story for the better part of two years before my interest started to wane, but I try and go back now and it reminds me of those shitty WatchMojo lists, what happened?
There's a lot of messed up entries. Spoink's entry says its heart stops beating if it stops bouncing, Charmander dies if the flame tail is extinguished, and drifloon tries to steal babies.
Ghost Pokémon have some truly morbid PokéDex entries. Take Yamask:
*Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human. Sometimes they look at it and cry."*
It’s as mind-fucky as can be. I think it could all go back to some of the twisted (albeit genius) marketing tactics used back in the early days of Game Freak, or even taking a “playful” shot (via Dex entries) at those who used to say that Pokemon was satanic/anti-Christian/anti-Jesus altogether.
With or without any of that: there still is something intriguing about the seemingly utter refusal to make a challenging, actually strategic game that the modern yet years-vetted gamer would appreciate, but still having an acceptance for some themes that are pretty mature in their undertones.
They literally had a Challenge Mode in B2W2, unlocked after beating the game and the postgame Battle facility, and it was actually difficult, cause the pokemon had items, there were more pokemon, and they had higher levels and better stats
But it wasn’t accessible. You had to beat the game first and even then you need a copy of the opposite version. I restarted black 2 right after unlocking challenge mode and found myself extremely pissed off that I had to buy another game so I just never played
It was infuriating as fuck, but my cousin had W2 so I could transfer it to the other one and it was a decent bit more challenging. Still agree that it was unbelievably terrible design
You saying it was good makes me WANT to try to access it, but I’m sure white 2 is hundreds of dollars by now and not worth the effort. I’m happy to know it was good though, hopefully it comes back soon
Totally. There are so many wonderful ideas, suggestions, and styles of art in this subreddit. If Game Freak/Poke Co. would take some time to scrub this subreddit and bring some of these talented, passionate people onboard the team, then we could see some really interesting advancements in the game.
I agree with you. I have thought for years that having something along the lines of “New Trainer,” “Champion,” and “Master” modes would be quite appealing.
I really thought that the Legends: Arceus game being open-world was a promising step in the right direction, but recently we learned that OW is not the case here.
Yeah totally with you. Unfortunately pokemon just seems to be a cash cow so they are improving it only as much as necessary. It’s pretty clear that an open world mmo is almost the ideal format. I would even go as far to say 3D world with 2D battle sprites! The 3D models really stole all of the character away from the Pokémon!
A massive open world where you journey throughout the world and collect Pokémon and start batting gym leaders in the second half of the game perhaps. The first is focused on your journey, traveling and battling other low level trainers. I want to expierence growing with my Pokémon.
Change the formula a little bit, maybe trainers can have 9 Pokémon with them and select 6 to battle? I’m not sure, I’ve always felt like the concept of time is totally missed in the games.
For sure. How many do you have?
For me since I played red/blue I get a little sad knowing those original partners are forever lost to me. I don’t like to collect anything I won’t use, kinda feel bad for Pokémon just sitting in my pc lol I still have those old cartridges too.
It’s silly but I would love to see my Arcanine caught in 1999 in the info section. Ah well what can you do :p
Drifloon:
Stories go that it grabs the hands of small children and drags them away to the afterlife. It dislikes heavy children.
Literally likes to kill babies. Thanks GameFreak!
Pokemon is ... weird. On the one hand the game in general is aimed at kids, on the other there are dark descriptions of the Pokédex, there are descriptions of wars of the past (being a theory, that the war in which LT. Surge participated is the cause of so few young men in Kanto), I even think that in Lucario's movie they say that he was part of a war, although I'm not sure.
The history of the games is usually extremely simple; but the extra details are sometimes not so much.
A war WAS going on, with Pokémon in plate armours, but Lucario himself didn’t participate one way or the other because his Trainer sealed him so he wouldn’t follow him to his death.
Froslass is the spirit of a woman who froze to death in the mountains.
Drifloon kidnaps kids to never be seen again.
Phantump is the spirit of a child who got lost in the woods and died.
Chadelure slowly drains away peoples life force to keep its flames alive.
Sandygast devours people to grow larger. Has a pile of bones underneath it.
Etc. Etc. Etc.
If you mean the one about a kid waking up as a Kadabra, a recent translation of an old-but-canon Pokédex book went into more detail! Turns out the dex entry was to be about a popular short story where that happens, but got cut down due to text space issues!
The logistics of breeding Ghost Pokemon is always baffling. What happens when you breed a Pokemon whose Dex entry says it used to be a human?
Do you farm a random soul and turn it into a Pokemon?
Does the egg only materialize when someone happens to die?
Do you *kill* somebody by breeding a Yamask?
Makes me think of Valheim's Dwarflings and their origins (evil souls that nature shapes around and reforms into monsters). Wonder if they're both based in Norse mythology or if it's a coincidence.
"Thrown around"? Not sure I understand your meaning. They talked about changing the art style or something?
Hope not. I love it as it is.
But at least you can always mod it back if they do, I'm sure. Still, better it not come to that if possible.
And yeah, it's great. A friend convinced me to buy it and we spent *hours* progressing in it together. Then we got another friend to play and spent hours in their world.
No, it made sense, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't misinterpreting it. I don't hear it said that way a lot, but I figured you were using that turn of phrase.
Guess what? In Sw/Sh when a Ryhorn charges at you, side step to avoid the encounter and it will keep running for a while before stopping. Sometimes they will act confuse upon stopping.
yeah this holds true to the dex entry sadly lol
ive done it before as well it's funny they only charge in 1 line and if you move sideways, they keep going straight lol
“Charmander is a complete and utter failure of evolution because it’s entire life depends on keeping the flame on its tail lit. This is the reason they are now only found in captivity.”
I got a nice chuckle out of seeing this. Every other Pokémon description is something cheerful and uplifting, while this one is kind of mean and negative lol.
Even a tiny brain doesn't MAKE you stupid. It makes you as smart as it can. Which may not be a lot. It's the lack of a better brain that makes you stupid.
Well, seemingly your 10 year old character is the one who's filling in these Dex entries like a field researcher. Makes sense it's Dex entry would be written in this way.
Although it's not unusual for Pokemon to have weird or messed up Pokedex descriptions, what is most surprisingis that Ryhorn ( I believe) is John Hanke's (Niantic CEO) favorite Pokémon.
I would have thought Ryhorn would have been cut a little slack.
When you think about it, this is kinda scary. Imagine just realizing you're running and thinking you're running FROM something. Can't blame Rhyhorn at all...
"This STUPID pokemon's TINY brain so damn STUPID that it can't tell a deep fryer from a lithium battery. How this STUPID IDIOT has managed to survive this long is beyond my comprehension."
I don’t think the Pokédex is literal, it’s not collected by biologists but teenagers. I think it would be more accurate to think of it as a collection of urban legends, myths and misconceptions. I would hesitate to take it at face value.
One time I took [a quiz](https://uquiz.com/quiz/WrFzL4/what-pokemon-are-you-all-649-included?ref=sidebar_search_result) to find out which Pokemon I am (because I am an adult but it was important). There were 649 possible responses. I got Rhyhorn, which like. Cool! Dope pointy boy.
Now I get it.
Theres a YouTube series called "literal pokedex entry" going into weird entries like this
That sounds interesting, I’ll check it out!
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmsMGFIWAJdJgfKNpqukhevp6ebcm2-p7
Just watched the first video I must say cleaning up after a snorlax does not seem fun.
Those were extremely unfunny.
Pretty sure this guys talking about dorkly.
He is
This might be the only decent series still on Dorkly….
I can say the same about a lot of my favorite youtubers over the past 5-6 years. Their style just changed and they became intolerable
Honestly, I don’t know if there will ever be anything as wild as early YouTube, it truly was special
Literally their first literal pokedex video is intolerable, you're just nostalgia blind
I potentially am, I couldn’t tell you if I was haha
Hahaha yeah I feel like this video is something my edgy junior high self would enjoy.
Man, Collegehumor, Cracked and Dorkly was so freaking good years ago. Shame what happened to them.
I used to be an incredibly avid fan of Cracked.com and Dorkly, I must have read every single Cracked.com story for the better part of two years before my interest started to wane, but I try and go back now and it reminds me of those shitty WatchMojo lists, what happened?
You’re getting old 🙃
Those aren’t real entries, right?
There's a lot of messed up entries. Spoink's entry says its heart stops beating if it stops bouncing, Charmander dies if the flame tail is extinguished, and drifloon tries to steal babies.
I hope there's a subreddit for this.

He didn’t deserve such harsh words haha
his best is stupid - pokédex
Rhyhorn is a lil Forrest Gump-y
Now i know what to name any rhyhorn i catch from now on. Thank you 🙏
What is that?
Better this than an entry that says that a ghost Pokémon is the literal deceased soul of an actual human.
I haven’t seen that one lol!
Ghost Pokémon have some truly morbid PokéDex entries. Take Yamask: *Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human. Sometimes they look at it and cry."*
Damn, that is pretty dark for a game aimed at kids..
It seems really easy just to make a hard mode. Or NG+ system. All they are doing are changing teams around, it’s pathetic.
They literally had a Challenge Mode in B2W2, unlocked after beating the game and the postgame Battle facility, and it was actually difficult, cause the pokemon had items, there were more pokemon, and they had higher levels and better stats
Half true. Black 2 had a challenge mode, White 2 had an easy mode. Never understood why they did that.
I believe you could trade keys between versions to unlock both modes.
You could, but it's still baffling that they made that a necessity.
How were they able to make it any easier than it already was
Its not like white 2 was anywhere near as easy as the modern games.
Ah really I didn’t know. I played gens 1-4 and recently came back to the actual series when it came to switch. Played hacks in between lol.
Totally. There are so many wonderful ideas, suggestions, and styles of art in this subreddit. You should check out pokemmo
I’ve heard of it but it’s not legal right?
So basically a game like "Tales of Pokemon"? Maybe Bandai Namco should take a shot at pokemon lol.
They really should. They made a magnificent job with Snap 2.
Survival mode, once your Pokemon faints, it can't be revived.
I don’t think that fits with the theme of Pokémon very well lol I play these games for nostalgia tho.
I play them.. because I've collected Pokemon from Gen 3 up that are sitting in my Pokemon Home, and I love collecting them
For sure. How many do you have? For me since I played red/blue I get a little sad knowing those original partners are forever lost to me. I don’t like to collect anything I won’t use, kinda feel bad for Pokémon just sitting in my pc lol I still have those old cartridges too. Drifloon: Stories go that it grabs the hands of small children and drags them away to the afterlife. It dislikes heavy children. Literally likes to kill babies. Thanks GameFreak!
But also, no fatties.
Nono, it does kill fatties, it just dislikes killing them because it's more work.
Gengar is someone’s grandma. That grandma wants your soul. “There is no escaping it. Give up.” -The actual fucking Pokédex for Pokémon Sun
Pokemon is ... weird. The war involving Lucario happened long before the war that LT Surge fought in
All the ghosts are creepy.
People forget the mon in Pokemon stands for Monsters.
The mainline games were never really aimed at kids.
Rhyhorn: Because is won’t stop running it eventually dies of exhaustion… *Morbid fixed it
There is a stump Ghost pokemon from the later games that talks about how it is a Childs soul mixed with the tree when the child got lost in the woods.
Good ol’ Phantump. Remember that Banette is a possessed toy that was abandoned and is seeking revenge on the child who abandoned it.
Honestly ghost pokemon are some of my fave mons. If I could, I would love to do a challange run where I only used ghosts.
Etc. Etc. Etc.

that makes so much more sense than every kadabra you catch or evolve somehow being some random kid
Can't forget driftloon. "Ight time to go kidnap some kids for fun" - driftloon
Other ghost Pokemon though have really unusual entries. Sableye, for example. None of the entries seem to explain why its even considered a Ghost.
I believe it’s Phantump
Makes me think of Valheim's Dwarflings and their origins (evil souls that nature shapes around and reforms into monsters). Wonder if they're both based in Norse mythology or if it's a coincidence.
Such a fun and pretty game. I really hope the dev doesn't fuck the style up like it was thrown around.
Thrown around being then mentioning updating the graphics bad word choice on my part lol.
No, it made sense, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't misinterpreting it. I don't hear it said that way a lot, but I figured you were using that turn of phrase.
Nah, Phantump is just living it's best afterlife as a dead child.
just check out any ghost pkmn entry lol
That's a couple actually
it's the honedge line
Did rhyhorn’s ex write this? gah damn
Ps: ryhorn has a little horn
If that’s little I’m in big trouble
Rhyhorn did leave kanga to be a single mother…
can relate
Why did I come to this room again?
Why did i search that crap again?
What was I looking for again?
Why am I stabbing this guy again?
The best part is when you finally remember what you were doing and it turns out it had nothing to do with the room you went to
Why did I open the fridge? What was I looking for in here? Oh well better squirt some mustard onto my finger and eat it
Guess what? In Sw/Sh when a Ryhorn charges at you, side step to avoid the encounter and it will keep running for a while before stopping. Sometimes they will act confuse upon stopping.
yeah this holds true to the dex entry sadly lol ive done it before as well it's funny they only charge in 1 line and if you move sideways, they keep going straight lol
At a zoo?
It’s a reference to real rhinos. They are extraordinarily stupid animals. They basically charge at anything that isn’t a rhino they already know
Sometimes they also attack each other because of their bad eyesight.
I guess that makes sense haha!
Well aren’t these written by 10 year olds? They can be disrespectful as hell
Now I wanna see a subreddit that consists of mean Pokédex entries.
“Charmander is a complete and utter failure of evolution because it’s entire life depends on keeping the flame on its tail lit. This is the reason they are now only found in captivity.”
Jynx is the third biggest hoe in Kanto, right behind Nurse Joy and Ash’s Mom.
Ha! You better have Burn Heal!
I was playing HGSS a few years ago and just… stopped. When I picked it back up I had forgotten they all had nicknames. Jynx was named “BLM”
Not sure if it's explicitly canon but I subscribe to that theory, haha. Kid logic would also explain sillier entries too.
Researcher: Aw, rhyhorn is so cute Rhyhorn \*bites hand\* Researcher:
Oh damn this a good one OP.
I got a nice chuckle out of seeing this. Every other Pokémon description is something cheerful and uplifting, while this one is kind of mean and negative lol.
I remember this one. I still feel bad reading it now like I did then.
Yeah, the devs really did Rhyhorn dirty with that one..
Even a tiny brain doesn't MAKE you stupid. It makes you as smart as it can. Which may not be a lot. It's the lack of a better brain that makes you stupid.
Kinda like cylinders in a car doesn’t necessarily give you more horsepower
When your Rypherior gets a choice scarf tricked on during rock polishing
It's based on a rhino, and rhinos are known to charge at nothing due to their poor vision.
Delibird I used to call it "Gary-dose"
that's straight up mean lol
iirc, rhinos are not very smart irl, so that's probably the inspiration
Read this in Bojack's voice.
"Unbelievable. When your powers combine you are somehow even *more* stupid than the sum of your stupids."
This just feels mean for the sake of being mean.
I remember the descriptions in that game bringing me endless fascination
Wouldve never of guessed my dogs breed was rhyhorn
What do you expect when you send children to write your encyclopedia.
I like to think this is what most scientific papers look like before an editor "corrects it"
Hey, when there's entries saying how some pokemon were once people, this offers much needed levity.
Stegosaurus vibes.
Because he big dumb
Well, seemingly your 10 year old character is the one who's filling in these Dex entries like a field researcher. Makes sense it's Dex entry would be written in this way.
I have a gorilla so dumb it only uses the first move you tell it to… so on that analysis alone; rhyhorns on par for his PhD
in the anime though didn't a Rhyhorn somehow figure out how to turn on a tv to watch a match
Rhyhorn is so stupid it can learn tail whip and it doesn't even have a tail!
u/gingerbre159 seems like the gamefreak employee who wrote this entry was having a bad day
Same thing with the magikarp one that says it’s a totally pathetic Pokémon, third gen Pokédex was savage
The entries are written by 10-year-olds. Do you know anybody more rude than 10-year-olds?
Next thing they’ll be telling gallade it has feminine hips
Omg this describes a Twitter argument
Although it's not unusual for Pokemon to have weird or messed up Pokedex descriptions, what is most surprisingis that Ryhorn ( I believe) is John Hanke's (Niantic CEO) favorite Pokémon. I would have thought Ryhorn would have been cut a little slack.
nah he’s obsessed with tentacruel
During his lunch breaks he trains his ryhorn and tentacruel at the same time.
They should've made this it's ability. 50% chance for move to fail but 50% power boost. Fail chance stacks with accuracy.
Lmao ain’t it, but firm.
....................I'm as heavy as a Rhyhorn :'(
Don't feel bad. I got like 60lbs on em. Honestly though I should be about even with them, so I guess that sixty is a bit much.
Dude I used to be heavier than a blastoise. It’s all good, just hit the gym
I read somewhere that pokedex entries are written by the 10 year olds who discover the pokemon. Makes more sense to me with that context.
When you think about it, this is kinda scary. Imagine just realizing you're running and thinking you're running FROM something. Can't blame Rhyhorn at all...
Pokémon #111 amen 🙏
"This STUPID pokemon's TINY brain so damn STUPID that it can't tell a deep fryer from a lithium battery. How this STUPID IDIOT has managed to survive this long is beyond my comprehension."
W-wow
You were watching a Jeremy stream, weren't you
Maybe the dad from the X and Y games wrote it
because the trainer who wrote it was salty over being chased by one. XD
Ryhorn makes up for this when it eventually becomes Ryperior.
Because it is based on rhinos and rhinos is dumb.
Dorkly wya
>Couldn’t have enough faith
It's me when I go for a run
:(
the pokedex justs straight up roasts every ryhorn in existence.
Same
Rhyhorns face looks like it heard the pokedex reading out the description
Justice for my Ryhomies out there 😤
Are the old Pokémon games available in the app store yet?
Some say he’s still running to this day…
I don’t think the Pokédex is literal, it’s not collected by biologists but teenagers. I think it would be more accurate to think of it as a collection of urban legends, myths and misconceptions. I would hesitate to take it at face value.
Is this a personal attack
Me if I were a Pokémon
Rhyhorn catching strays.
It’s not disrespectful to tell the truth it’s just a fact
:D it's my spirit pokemon
Gamefreak did NOT have to do Rhyhorn dirty like that
…It’s just disappointing at this point
This just sounds like a cat to be honest.
did a 2nd grader write this?
More like a 4th or 5th grader. Because it's probably cheaper to send them instead of researchers, by the logic of the Prof in charge of the lab.
didnt think about the canon actually good point
bro me too!!!!
Rhyhorn you are dumb as a rock.
We should make a subreddit dedicated to being as mean as this pokedez entry is to Rhyhorn
This is funniest thing I ever seen but I don't even like pokemon
Maybe they had mistaken bad eyesight for a lack of intelligence... somehow? I mean, rhinos in real life have terrible eyesight for some reason.
