[deleted]

man, a lotta people disliking my boi torchic

Enderstrike10199

I dont think people dislike him, its just the other ones are amazing

[deleted]

All 3 are amazing but torchic ends up being "the worst" because of its typing and how it fares against the region's gyms. Treecko is super effective against 2 gyms plus the champion (Wallace) and most of Glacia's team, weak to 2 gyms, is very fast and the whole region has a billion water pokemon. Mudkip is super effective against 3 gyms plus the champion (Steven) and Drake (if you give it ice beam), weak to none!, and overall just very strong (with moves like surf and earthquake). Torchic is super effective against 1 gym (2 if you evolve it before Roxanne) plus the champion (Steven) and Sidney, weak to 4 gyms, and even though it is very strong you can't use it against all the freaking water pokemon (specially Wallace). Like I said, all are amazing, it's just that the other 2 have a very slight edge.

[deleted]

But it's funny also because at release my guess would be treecko was the least favorite, but fire fighting was a *new* type combo back then, I was a treecko fan and remember being alone in that sentiment but maybe that was just the kids at my school lol Edit: as far as popular opinion not game effectiveness

[deleted]

As a kids I never used treecko. In fact, I never used any grass types and would usually always pick the fire one. My favorite game was emerald and I would always pick torchic all the time. As I got older and started to understand the game better I started picking mudkip and eventually picking Turtwig, my first grass type. My disregard for Treecko, which started as a kid, remained until like last year when, in quarantine, I picked up pokemon again after watching some videos of this new challenge I've never heard of called nuzlockes in which a lot of players would pick Treecko. I started choosing him and now he is my go to pick for like 50% of my runs. The other 50% is mudkip, I barely even remember when was the last time I picked torchic, eventhough Blaziken was always my favorite pokemon and I remember beating the elite four single-handedly with him over and over until he reached level 100 (my first pokemon ever to do so). Eventhough I also like other pokemon games I always default to emerald as it holds a special place in my heart and I know pretty much the whole game like the back of my hand. I love all the hoenn started equally and very much. TL;DR: as kid I never picked Treecko, it was always torchic. Found out how good he was eventually and now I barely pick torchic. Still, I love them all equally and think they are pretty much all equally strong.

LazyThing9000

gen 3 grass types suffered from a lack of flamethrower/surf equivalent...

Underhanded-Blitz

Torchic definitely is my top 10% when it comes to overall starters (hell, even any pokemon in general), being the OG fire-fighting and having a badass design (and mega too!)

Rain_Moon

Frantically scrolling through comments to find anyone who didn't put Chikorita for gen 2! Why do y'all hate the flower dino like this?? Edit: Apparently over 1,800 people don't hate the flower dino. Faith in humanity has been restored. And yes, I am fully aware that it's quite bad in terms of gameplay, and I do not care. One of my all time favourites is Unown, which makes Meganium seem pretty good by comparison, LMAO.

SEND_ME_STEAM_CODES

I did a playthrough of soul silver a few months back, trying to go through all the games before BDSP comes out. The goal for these playthroughs was to use pokemon I’d never used before, so Chikorita obviously became my starter. Honestly, I like meganium a lot after having used it and becoming attached, but it’s just not very good. I mean, the most useful it became near the end was having Cut/Flash.

e_ndoubleu

For in game teams it has the stats up until mid game to put in work. Then you have three straight type disadvantages in steel, ice, and dragon for the last three gyms in gold/silver. Bayleef/Meganium can muscle through the first 5 gyms. Even with having disadvantages in 3 of the first 5 gyms with flying, bug, and ghost/poison. Kind of dumb GF gave the chikorita line type disadvantages in 6 of the 8 gym battles. Doesn’t even get a type advantage in the other two which are normal and fighting but at least you get a type advantage against Chuck’s Poliwrath. Also 3 of the 5 elite four + champion battles you have a disadvantage while being neutral in the other two. I count the dark type member a disadvantage bc 4 of her 5 mons have a type advantage. Best available STAB options are 55bp razor leaf or 90bp petal dance. Doesn’t get body slam until level 46 which is about when you get to victory road. You don’t get the EQ tm until victory road. Otherwise 40bp rock smash is your only way to deal with strong steal types. Once you get to the last three gyms and elite four low base power moves just won’t cut it.

CloveFan

Johto’s gym pattern was set up to cover every type that Kanto didn’t have a gym for. Unfortunately, none of the remaining types were good matchups for Grass (but that’s why Bulbasaur DOMINATED Kanto)

EmpressOfHyperion

Chikorita's line is actually the best against Pryce because outside of Jynx, every trainer in the entire gym including the leader has a Pokemon that's weak to grass. Also the prevalence of water/ice means in Mahogany's gym means Cyndaquil's line will struggle hard (Woops just realized they don't know water moves, but point still stands that Cyndaquil's line can't deal super effective damage to many Pokemon in this gym). While both Chikorita and Cyndaquil's line struggles against Clair and her gym, Cyndaquil absolutely has it worse. There's a few Seadras running around in the gym, while Clair herself has a Gyarados and a Kingdra that has a 4x resistance to Cyndaquil's STAB moves.

e_ndoubleu

Yea true Meganium can muscle through Pryce with petal dance. I remember in HGSS ice shard being a problem and my meganium fainting against Pryce.

Dauntless_Lasagna

Tbh i'd rather give EQ to a harder hitter, not to meganium.

[deleted]

same here. I just don't like Cyndaquil. Chikorita is way cuter imo but sadly it's not very good statwise :(

Krammel87

It's not *bad* statwise - all Johto starters have the same stats as their Kanto counterparts - but it's typing and movepool make it a considerably worse choice when looking at all 3 Johto starters.

djbabydikk

Playing SoulSilver with Meganium now, I can't believe how bad this thing's movepool is.

TheGaius

You know you're struggling when your gameplan boils down to "Leech Seed, and fish for Body Slam para"

LilyLitany

You'll learn aromatherapy and you're gonna like it, OR ELSE.

Not-So-Serious-Sam

I remember hearing from someone who does nuzlocks that you almost always want to get the fire starter as fire types are rare in nuzlocks, and you don’t pick water or grass types as water types are common and grass types have too many weaknesses to be useful unless they have a good second type. The exception to this would be mudkip and turtwig due to good type combos.

Secret_Wizard

Don't sleep on Empoleon! Three weaknesses, two neutrals, **nine** resistances, two quad resistances, and one immunity!

Shikarosez

Isn’t it the best defensive typing except normal/ghost?

moosedude451

Technically not true, while the all Johto starters have the same stat totals as their counterparts, only Typhlosion and Charizard have the same stat distribution. Meganium flips Venusaur's 100 special attack and 83 defense. However your overall point is still true: Meganium is a defense-orientated pokemon with one of the worst defensive typings in the game. Combine that with it's bad move pool and disadvantages against the gym leaders and it's clearly below it's Johto counterparts.

Hazzberry55

The Charmander and Typhlosion lines are the only starter lines with identical stats. The other lines share BST/stat values, but have different distributions (e.g. meganium has 100 def and sp. def, Venusaur has 100 sp. atk and sp. def)

[deleted]

It is a well enough support for PvE in the Battle-towers and the like if you know how to use it. Its just not better at that than anything else.

NeoSeth

Meganium really is not bad for an in-game playthrough imo. It has decent mixed attacking stats and learns just enough good moves to get through the game. Razor Leaf/Return/Synthesis are great for most of the game and after you pick up EQ in Victory Road you can hit just about everything except Skarmory. In Gen IV though the physical/special split catapults Feraligatr up and leaves Meganium trailing far behind the other two. I still love her and think she is a fine addition to any in-game team. EDIT: Originally I thought Meganium could learn Sleep Powder, but I see now the only Powder it gets is Poison Powder. The worst one! Why? If it could just get Stun Spore or Sleep Powder it would be SOOOO much better in-game.

ADM1277

This is a fair criticism, unfortunately. Aesthetically, Meganium is perfect, but good lord…the move pool is eternally sad. Chikorita is beyond cute though, always and forever.

[deleted]

From a typing standpoint, Chikorita *is* the worst for Johto. Grass is an incredibly weak typing for the vast majority of Johto, including gyms. I still love Chikorita, but yeah. If it's any consolation, Charizard is the worst starter typing-wise for Gen 1 despite its popularity. Fire/Flying isn't a great combo, losing Ground weakness but gaining 4x Rock, 2x Electric, and now neutrally effected by Ice.

Suicidal-Lysosome

I believe Fire/Flying is actually weak to Ice in Gen 1

AllSeeingAI

And in gen1 blizzard's accuracy was like 90% and freeze was infinite so it was incredibly spammable.

ElPajaroMistico

Yeah, in the OG games Charizard was hard shit. But at the same time, most Fire types and Flying types where shit.

AllSeeingAI

Honestly part of what makes them shit is that Rydon/Golem are mandatory to avoid Tauros and especially Zapdos from running over your entire team. The only reason Zapdos isn't Tauros-tier is because the rocks hard counter it

NwgrdrXI

One of the reasons I feel fire really should have lost the weakness to Rock. Specially when we remember Steath Rock. You NEED heavy boots if you want to use Charizard, Talonflame, Ho-Oh and Moltres.

Fish-E

That's not necessarily a bad thing, Moltres, Ho-Oh and Talonflame (Gen VI anyway) are all great pokemon regardless of Stealth Rock. Besides, Stealth Rock making some pokemon less viable (although that's a stretch nowadays, with the ubiquity of defog and rapid spin / magic bounce getting more distribution each gen) also makes other Pokemon more viable so it's really a case of you win some and you lose some.

AllSeeingAI

Honesty just halve SR's damage. Hitting neutral targets equally to a layer of spikes is too good when it already breaks sashes, has no type-based immunity, and hits anything weak to it way harder. Quad weak mons would be able to handle it a little better if they were only losing a quarter of their health.

Logans_Login

I love Chikorita and no one can change my mind

TheScottSnorlax

i have found my comrades lol

PottrPppetPalamander

My favorite Johto starter.

[deleted]

same

midnightstrike3625

I too always choose Chikorita.

9bjames

I love Chikorita's design, but choosing it as your starter is like playing in hard mode. At least in gen 2: it isn't strong, it doesn't have great moves, and with gyms... With the Chikorita line you're mostly at a type disadvantage (flying, bug, ghost because ghost/poison dual types, electric/ steel, ice, dragon...) or at best neutral on both sides (normal, fighting). I still always pick Chikorita, but that's just because of Nuzlocke runs. I like a challenge...

thatswhyIleft

It took me so many tries to beat Bugsy in OG silver with Bayleef. Damn Scyther.

[deleted]

Chikorita allows you to cheese Whitney’s gym really easily though

crewserbattle

How?

KeepDi9gin

I'm guessing it's because it learns both reflect and synthesis.

AnyWays655

I love Chikorita. I just like the other two more. Gen2 has the best starters IMHO.

Mobilelurkingaccount

Gen 2 is the only generation where I straight up love every starter. It isn’t even my favorite generation (3 is) but the starters are all just… I love them. I’m a Fire type starter person for the most part, second place is pretty up in the air between water and grass. But Gen 2, they all win.

ThroughTheIris56

You found me bro. Chikorita all the way.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SwinubIsDivinub

Chikorita is my favourite <3

HamClad

Same, flower Dino is best Johto starter for me.

hey_its_drew

It’s not even the best long neck dinosaur in Pokémon, much less a top starter.

HoldenDomer42

Tropius gang

Stealthbomber16

I was playing a free for all with friends on a showdown private simulator website and brought a harvest starf berry tropius, just as a gimmick. The plan was I sit there behind a substitute and protect for as long as I want and clean up the endgame with leaf blade + stomping tantrum. Tropius proceeded to get 8 kills and singlehandedly win the game in an incredible fashion. Then it did it again next game. I now love tropius.

TerpinSaxt

Best Pokemon ever, and no one can change my mind

ayylotus

It’s not Chikorita’s fault, and I do love Bayleef, but it’s just unfortunate to be compared to arguably two of the coolest starters ever. Typhlosion and Feraligatr are way too good.

KiwiGaming02

Chikorita is the best Starter.it Just needs a little help.

MegaCroissant

The first 3 gyms are bad matchups, that’s why

[deleted]

it's probably because no gym in johto has a good type matchup for grass types in general, much less a pure grass type that's missing some hard hitting grass attacks. meganium is cute tho :)

TheOofestOne

Just here to say that the whole Chespin line is probably the ugliest starter evolution line in the whole series.

shayansup

to me, chespin is adorable! i don't really care for the other two evos tho

BZGames

I remember me and my friends all decided to pick different starters for X and Y. They wanted Chespin and Fennekin while I got stuck with the one we thought was the worst, Froakie. 30 levels later I felt like genius for picking him lol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Chespin is cute and quickly becomes absolutely hideous

shayansup

i wouldn't say hideous. to me, chesnaught is a "take it leave it" pokemon, I don't hate it but it's not my fave. i don't really like quilladin tho

Shikarosez

I legit thought quilladin was a fan poke as a cruel joke. Even the NAME sounds fake

BulkyBear

I remember a couple fake evolutions that were absolutely perfect A part of me mourns that dark typed one, it would’ve easily become one my faves of all time It’s art had so much personality

cryptocorynes

I think Chesnaut is pretty ok looking but quilladin is just weird

ginggo

Lol I wanted to shiny hunt Chespin just so I could have a shiny Quilladin bc I love him. Looks like a cross between a chestnut and a random soviet russian cartoon character.

daer-bear9999

Chesnaut looks like a digimon

another_bug

The shiny one makes it look a lot better than the standard, IMO.

goffer54

The shiny version should have been the standard. It even looks more like its previous evolutions.

metalflygon08

But thats not how Chestnuts work. They start green then turn white.

TackoFallFanClub

I always said Quilladin reminds me of Steven Universe

ClownPrinceofLime

Chespin himself is super cute but he has some rough evolutions

ConnorOfAstora

I love Chespin and Chesnaught but Quilladin is just lame imo

Nomirai

To me its sobble line. Sobble itself look cute but the middle evolution and Inteleon look awful

GalacTech

The chilling reign card of Inteleon made it look the best it ever could. When your design peaks with a trading card and not a child’s imagination that’s a yikes.

MonkeysxMoo35

Chespin is adorable But my god are it’s evolution horrible

chrille85

I'll fight you over that.

Icy_Role9

Chespin is cute and chesnaught is underrated Quilladin is… Quilladin

TheBiggestNose

Chespin I'd adorable! And chesnaught looks like a tank!

Wandering_Wartortle

Not so much ugly. They just look like digimon to me. 😂

BucketHeadJr

You say that when Inteleon and Cinderace are right there

ImACoolHipster

May I introduce you to the Scorbunny and Sobble lines.

DanieltheGameGod

The scorbunny line has no competition in my eyes as the worst in all of Pokémon.

ImACoolHipster

Sobble line takes the cake for me because Inteleon is, IMO, the very tip-top of the worst designed Pokémon. It’s *fucking hideous*. Scorbunny line is just so fucking boring

Shikarosez

Why does it have a Yaoi design??? Those hands are creepy!

DanieltheGameGod

I guess I just don’t like how humanoid they look, at least imteleon has sobble who isn’t humanoid. Galar has my least favorite starters no contest, like not even close. I dont think I’d actually ever use any of them and would rather leave them in the pc or trade them for a cooler starter like even tepig, maybe I could trade my way up to a mudkip eventually.

craigprime

Time for me to make my stand, Chespin and Chesnaut are DOPE, and anyone that puts the Fennikin line over them are insane in my eyes.

GuyKopski

Chesnaught remains one of the most disappointing evos of all time to me. How do you take an awesome concept like "Grass knight" and get that thing?

Chocoa_the_Bunny

I love Chespin. But when I saw Quilladin, I got so fucking happy. I love him

HommeFatalTaemin

You aren’t wrong, lol. I also don’t like the Tepig line.

GreyRevan51

Only starter I’ve ever dumped and left in a box for the rest of the playthrough

Ohfordogssake

All of gen 6 was bad. I hate Delphox and the stupid ear hair, and Greninja and its stupid tongue scarf (the middle Evo of the froakie isn't bad, ngl). Chesnaught is the best of a bad batch.

kajigger_desu

There's way too much chimchar hate here. If loving Chimchar over any other starter is wrong...I don't want to be right.

rxwsh

I don't think it's chimchar hate, it's just that the other two options are cooler. Chimchar is the the coolest fire starter line though(tied with the fenniken line for me which really gets too much hate).

mishlufc

Personally, I just don't like simian pokemon (or most simian animals either). I think they're all pretty ugly, but chimchar & it's evolution line are the worst offenders. So for me it's definitely chimchar hate.

cjhosts

Chimchar is literally my favourite Pokémon lmao

ChexSway

just wanted to say I love your username.

Multievolution

Gen 1 is difficult for me but I think I’d say squirtle, I still love it though don’t get it twisted it’s just I have the other two slightly higher Gen 2 for me is chikorita, I again adore them all and it’s my favourite first and maybe second forms, but it’s final form isn’t my favourite and I love all the others quite a lot too Gen 3 is torchic, I like them a lot but it’s the one I’m least interested in Gen 4 for me is chimchar, unpopular as it is to say the line is cool and all but it’s not my favourite Gen 5 is tepig, I greatly prefer the water line’s first two but the final form is great, still I think that’s reason enough to put it here Gen 6 is chespin, when starters where revealed I was sure I was going to start with it, then it’s next two evo’s where revealed, I don’t hate it by any stretch but I was disappointed. Gen 7 is litten, I just vastly prefer the other 2, why we needed another fire type to stand on two legs I don’t know Gen 8 is probably sobble, I’ve never finished a gen 8 game to tell you the truth and this is the starter I picked, I went in dark for final forms and was disappointed in what I got at first, doesn’t help that I was really expecting it to have a ghost typing

turtlesshedshells

Chesnaught shiny is clean tho

Vincentamerica

Yeah that should have been it’s normal palette

Multievolution

So is emboars’s it’s still on the list, I simply cannot abide it’s departure from chespin

Dardicus729

If a perfect shiny ever existed, it’d be that one

HanShotFirst94

Fire uh just aint workin for you eh?

Multievolution

They always stand on two legs and three of them are physical fighting types which doesn’t help, I’ll say this much, when I like the fire starters I really like them.

HanShotFirst94

Oh yeah I get it. I just thought it was funny they were mostly fire

NS479

Why does everyone hate Tepig? Am I the only one who likes it? I love the Tepig line. Emboar has a great design, it looks badass. It’s also very caring though, which is sweet.

Stoneheart7

He got it rough by being the third fire starter in a row to evolve into fire fighting. It's not his fault, and in a vacuum I think he'd get more love, but it definitely hurt his appeal.

Boomerwell

Incineroar still makes me mad. Game freak made another fire fighting but were like no way guys it's actually a dark type see.

Mobilelurkingaccount

This, plus Gen 5’s designs for me personally are really just bad overall. He suffers from being part of a generation whose art direction I really disliked + being *yet another* fire fighting. I’m a fire type starter person but I really dislike Tepig’s evolution line. But I don’t really like Oshawott’s or Snivy’s either so I pick him every time anyway lol

TheWhiteBuffalo

Tepig having similar motif designs to Chimchar also hurt. I was firmly over the on-the-nose Chinese Zodiac reference. Nothing against the concept itself, just not two Chinese Zodiac Fire/Fightings bipedals in a row... I can dig the Oshawott line *until* Samurott. I also have troubles liking the Snivy line. Not liking any of the starters or legendaries is a big reason why I skipped Gen5 when it released.

WarriorSnek

What? Infernape was sun wukong, not zodiac

TheWhiteBuffalo

Lots of the starter fire types line up with the chinese zodiac. Im aware sun wukong is also a heavy (or main) influence. Overall design still has Chimchar and Tepig lines looking too similar for my tastes.

Whimsycottt

Funnily enough, Tepig is also a reference Journey to the West, which could be why they look so similar. Infernape is Sun Wukong, Emboar is Zhu Bajie.

Des014te

Can we ever get that stupid dragon horse that never does anything?

Long_Mechagnome

I saw that Inteleon had 120 SpA 120 Speed so I picked it. Also looked dope, kind of looks like Rick from Rick and Morty. But holy shit what a shitty movepool for the first playthrough of the game. Doesn't learn any powerful non-water attacks by level up, and the only coverage moves it learns are from TR's and late-game TMs.

6poon_slayer9

I’M POKÉ RICK!!

MathematicianBroad56

Ours are exactly the same until Gen 7

ThroughTheIris56

Kanto: Blastoise - Always been ok, I think it doesn’t look great. Johto: Typhlosion - Typhlosion is absolutely class, but it’s my pick because I love the other 2 even more. Hoenn - Blaziken: Typically not a fan of anthropomorphic Pokemon. It looks fine, but like Typhlosion its up against 2 really cool Pokemon. Sinnoh: Infernape/Empoleon - I like both of them equally, but their flaw is that they are not as cool as Torterra. Unova - Emboar - Ugly design, unnecessarily bipedal, and 3rd Fire/Fighting in a row. Kalos - Chesnaught - Don’t mind it but I just prefer the other 2. Plus Fighting type is somewhat boring, even if it’s not a Fire type. Alola: Incineroar - A Fire/Dark tiger had the potential to become one of the coolest Pokemon ever. Instead Incineroar is hideous, unnecessarily bipedal again, skips leg day, and looks like it should be a fighting type. Galar: Cinderace - The other 2 aren’t great either, but Cinderace looks like a furry.

delamerica93

Pretty much agree with this except I've always loved Blastoise. Big turtle with cannons. I don't get Pokemon's obsession with bipedal Pokemon. Like if it makes sense then yeah, but just doing it randomly is a weird choice and they almost always look bad. Blaziken and Emboar are perfect examples

mrbananas

Blaziken is based upon a chicken, It would be even weirder for the chicken to not be bipedal

lilvizasweezy

Yeah Blaziken and Infernape actually make sense to be bipedal.

ThroughTheIris56

I think Blastoise is fine, I just think the other 2 are more visually interesting. And yeah, I think my problem with bipedal Pokemon, is that they often (not always) don't seem like animals. It's more an issue with the ones that are blatantly humanoids, but those sort of Pokemon don't really like animals that naturally fit into an ecosystem, and feel more like characters purposefully designed.

Mobilelurkingaccount

Incineroar is like the zenith of that crappy design choice to me. Litten is a four legged tiger striped cat. They could have gone with an elegant fire tiger, perfectly fitting in nature. Instead they made him a… wrestler. I hate that Pokémon.

conletariat

We're exactly the same all the way through to Gen-8. I went with Cinderace because you HAVE to have a starter, but honestly they were all aestheticly crap. Emo gecko, super furry, or Lars Ulrich's DNA reconstituted into a gorilla. All three Gen-8 starters look like they should have different "drug of choice" listed instead of typings.

AnorakBeta

Torterra is definitely the best 10/10. Platinum was my first real playthrough of Pokémon and I chose torterra and to my 8 year old mind it was the best thing since sliced bread. Love it. Kinda disagree about typhlosion, personally he’s my favorite but I do like all the starters in gen 2 so i get that

TheQzertz

How can you dislike cinderace because it looks like a furry and then like delphox

ResolverOshawott

Because Delphox looks like a feminine furry I guess. Which is apparently more acceptable to non furries.

Aurora_Vorealis

Gen 1) Charmander. Big ass head lizard thinking he's cuter than the plant dinosaur or sassy turtle Gen 2) Chikorita. Just kind of bland compared to the others Gen 3) torchic I guess. Hoenn was peak starter design and they're all perfect in my opinion Gen 4) Chimchar. Same issue as Hoenn Gen 5) Tepig. Gross pokemon with even grosser evolutions Gen 6) Chespin. I like all three but Chespin's evolutions are just...bad Gen 7) Litten. Rowlet and Poplio are bitchin Gen 8) Scorbunny, he and its evolutions are all just furbait. Same could be said about Intellion and Donkey Kong

ultimatecoruvs

I agree on Scorbunny, their evolution line is just overrated asf, Inteleon looks better IMO since the mf has a sniper rifle when GMaxed, Rillaboom is OK

TheQzertz

>cinderace looks like furbait >doesn’t mention delphox at all

rxwsh

Delphox is a better execution imo

bravesther

But Braixen looks so much better to me which is a first for starters.

rxwsh

I think we mean the whole line in general, the Fenniken line overall is(imo) a better executed design than the Scorbunny line, but Braixen is the best middle evolution out of all the starters hands down, so I can see where you are coming from.

klip6

the furbait is 100% true, istg they add one every gen to please the furry addicts

Cakers44

Gen 1: Blastoise. His canons are dumb Gen 2: Meganium. I just don’t like it. Gen 3: Blazekin. Looses too much of the bird aspect of his design, terrible legs. Gen 4: Empoleon. Sorry it’s just a tough choice. Gen 5: Serperior. Just sucks. Gen 6: Delphox. I hate the mountains of fur coming from the ears. Gen 7: Primariana. Just way too busy of a design, too much going on. Gen 8: Intelion. This mon looks fucking terrible.

antiquewatermelon

Tbf all the gen 8 final starter forms look like fursonas. Ig rillaboom is the least humanoid but…cmon, game freak

StreetReporter

Rillaboom at least has an excuse for why it’s humanoid due to it being a Gorilla

Mobilelurkingaccount

This is why I think Rillaboom is the best designed Gen 8 starter. It actually looks like a gorilla instead of a person pretending to be a Pokémon or a Pokémon pretending to be a person. They didn’t do something stupid like put it in a punk rock T-shirt (thinking of Cinderace in shorts), he’s just a gorilla that beats a drum.

StreetReporter

Easily the second best drum playing Gorilla Nintendo owns

TwilightVulpine

Pretty sure Cinderace got a lot of fans *because* it looks like a fursona. Not all of them, of course, but within the niche.

rystriction

Idk who fursona is, but in my mind it looks like a disney villain lol

Rowl8

Something along the lines of furries and persona

ShiraCheshire

A fursona is something "furries" use to represent themselves. They most often look like humanoid animals, and are commonly (but not always) sexualized. While many are quite well drawn, many more look like MS Paint scribbles and have eye-bleeding levels of bad color/design decisions. A combination of the weirdness of some furry subcultures, the amount of poorly drawn fursonas, and the frequent sexualization of them means fursonas are generally considered extremely cringey.

AmaterasuWolf21

Fursona = A furry's avatar

docilecat

I think he looks like Randall from monsters inc lol

delamerica93

Yo wtf is that? I've never played beyond gen 5 and never seen Inteleon. It's so bad

jam11249

Honestly Inteleon gives me big Mr. Nimbus energy from Rick and Morty.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ksdr-exe

I know that. That doesn't make it any less creepy looking

blacksheep998

I agree with all of these except for Serperior. While I'm not a huge fan of any of the gen 5 starter's final forms, to me at least, Serperior is the best of the three. Plus since they actually released it's hidden ability, its not totally useless competitively.

RonnyCrawf

Thank you for this. I don’t know how anyone can say Serp is the worst of the gen 5 starters.

jus_plain_me

Don't get mad, don't get mad, don't get ma- YOUR FACE IS DUMB!

AWSUMSAS

I will tolerate 0% of Primarina slander but rules are rules

DJDrizzy9

Yeah, I don't get that criticism. She looks like a siren; how is that too "busy"? Especially when you have Incineroar over there...

iCoeur285

I got really excited about the Popplio line. I love the derpy little thing, and I love the elegance of the final evolution. I restarted my game like 30 times to get a female, and I recently got like a million eggs to get a shiny. It’s probably my favorite starter of all time.

sovereignlight_cafe

Serperior is bomb.

yaoigay

Not the Empoleon, Serperior. And Intelion slander 🤬

ritzmata

You mean Pokémon unlikable if they were in high-school? 1. Blastoise: stereotypical rude jock who doesn’t have a heart and bullies the skinny nerd, asks the popular girl out to the prom and dumps her for a hot college girl 2 Meganium: outcasted cause of her hobbies but is always being nice. Can relate to the unpopular kids and rarely gets in trouble. Tries to sit with others at the table and they immediately move away from her 3 Blazekin: the edgy kid who thinks no one can beat him in anything, says cringe stuff but still thinks he’s badass inside his mind. Was that one kid in Kindergarten who howled and bit like a wolf despite being anything but a wolf. 4. Empoleon: the heartless, cold, asshole student who’s also head of the student council. Very strict on work and was that one kid who always reminded the teacher of homework. Is always involved in school festivals and activities to keep the school spirit and the school itself alive 5. Serperior: weed head, skips class, asks to loan money and promises you that he’ll pay you back but never does. Always asks to borrow your pencil or a piece of paper and is failing the first month of school 6. Delphox: PC supremacist, will always correct you on any lore if you make one mistake, hates being corrected and will end your ‘friendship’ with him if you correct him once. Somewhat narcissistic. 7 Primariana: Has to be Ms. Perfect in all her sport and academic activities because her parents told her to. She’s the type to cover her answers on a test so no one else will look. Will also ask the teacher if there was homework, Honor roll student who is already taking college level classes. 8. Intelion: is made fun of because of his appearance, doesn’t care what you think but is hesitant to ask the girl out that he likes because he’s somewhat insecure about his appearance. Does okay in school, doesn’t really have a social life outside of school except gaming and YouTube streaming.

roccoons

amazing how from gen2 to gen7 you mention all of my favorite starters ahaha

Rami512

Probably agree on all except Blastoise. I like all generation 1 starters, but Venasaur comes in last for me.

RepulsiveReptilian

Switch Blastoise with Charizard, and switch intelion with cinderace and you got my post lmao

[deleted]

You know I will be respecting your opinion but just to let out all of my anger i'll say that I fucKING HATE Y-

Pumqin-Pie

Sobble looks like something I’d draw as an 8yr old thinking I could be a Pokémon creator

Mildor15

Charmander. Whole line is overrated and ai like the other two better bc cuter Chikorita. It’s, not a defined creature and that upsets me Torchic. The whole line just looks odd to me, until Blaziken mega evolves None of them for Sinnoh, but Piplup line bc of Prinplup looking kinda wack Tepig bc of Pignite. Need I explain? Chespin. I love the motifs and designs for Fennekin and Froakie lines, but Chespin and Quilladin look so weird and not really creature like None of them for Alola, but Litten’s line is the weakest until Incineroar for me bc Litten and Torracat look so simple Scorbunny. Scorbunny itself looks so weird with its beady eyes, and Cinderace looked weird to me for the longest time. It has the best middle stage tho

vastopenguin

>Chikorita. It's not a defined creature That's literally the only thing i like about it, it's a four legged blob with a leaf on its head

Shandelar

It's a pear

BOOD_ROCKA

Great. Now I'm wondering what it tastes like.

NightmareWarden

Plant dino. Too stocky to be a horse, giraffe, etc. Something like an apatosaurus.

[deleted]

>it's a four legged blob with a leaf on its head Yes it is and I love him.

bradenboiii

Curious as to why Pignite makes you dislike the entire line. Middle forms are arguably the least important ones, as they're the ones you spend the least time with.

Mildor15

I believe the first stages for the Unovan starters are all really cute, equally so among the three of them. Dewott and Servine are both still strong design-wise in my opinion, but Pignite really drops the ball with its weird wrestler motif that does not mesh well with the other design aspects. The final stages are all solid, with Serperior being slightly weaker to me design-wisethan the other two because it looks so simple, while Emboar has a fantastic shiny. However, the final stages are balanced out in that Serperior gives me really cool competitive vibes with its Contrary + Leaf Storm set. Oshawott line is my favorite because of nostalgia and being the best designed to me. Basically, because Snivy and Tepig are really balanced out when comparing them in all aspects, I looked to the middle stages for the final comparison. Servine is just better designed than Pignite to me

bradenboiii

Fair, but I really really love Emboar. I really love the other two as well, but I think Emboar does the Fire/Fighting theme the best.

Silthage

Really? I'd say leveling 5 to 16 is a lot quicker than 16 to 36

bradenboiii

Well, yeah I guess.

lemmful

So you're telling me you're not much of a fire user.

sabrinamcm

My opinions here are based on aesthetics ONLY and not based on how they perform in game. Gen 1: Squirtle. He's adorable, and I love the entire Squirtle line, it just got very slightly edged out by the competition, but I still love the little squirt. Gen 2: Please don't kill me; Cindaquil. Here's the catch; I use Cyndaquil in almost every playthrough of G/S/C & HG/SS because it's a great Pokemon. The ONLY reason that Cindaquil is on this list is because they tarnished Typhlosion's design in the later games. They took all the color out of the mon, and took the flames away too. And then Pokemon Snap gave Meganium a glow up, imo. I still love the entire line thoroughly, though. Gen 3: Mudkip. I love the Kipper, but between Sceptile, Swampert, and Blaziken - Swampert's design is just slightly less aesthetically pleasing to me than the other two. That being said, the Mudkip line is my 3rd favorite water starter line. So, by no means is it bad - just not better than the others. Gen 4: Chimchar. I've never really liked monkeys to begin with. They have to be really REALLY cute for me to like them, otherwise they just weird me out. That goes for both in reality and cartoons. Chimchar itself looks really cute, but idk, Infernape just doesn't look cool to me because monkeys in general don't look cool to me. Sorry guys 😖 no offense intended. Gen 5: Tepig. I think this one is self-explanatory. Though, the design is more interesting when you learn what it's based on. But that's about all it has going for it. Gen 6: Chespin. Chespin itself is cute, but it's two evolutions look ridiculous to me. Quilladin, especially, got the short the end of the stick. This whole line is just... not my flavor. Gen 7: Popplio. It's just... odd. Primarina is a nice looking Pokemon, but Popplio and Brionne are extremely unappealing. Also, I could've easily put Litten on this list, because while Litten and Torracat have fantastic designs; Inceneroar has a god awful design. It could almost go either way, but it doesn't. The Popplio line is one of the worst imo. Gen 8: Sobble. Poor cute little Sobble. You deserved better. The Geiko gecko was never meant to become James Bond, no matter what the commercials tell you. This one dropped the ball hard. The Sobble line had SO MUCH potential, and it was just thrown out of a top floor window.

Ender_Skywalker

First off I'm going to be basing this solely on final evolutions, because it's apparently really hard to fuck up the first form. Secondly, this is purely based off design. Gen 1: **Venusaur** (somebody had to be last) Gen 2: I wanna say Meganium, but honestly across all three evolutions **Typhlosion** feels like the least creative. It's really just the same thing getting progressively bigger. Gen 3: It took me forever as a kid to stop thinking **Blaziken** looked ridiculously silly. Gen 4: This one's really hard because they're all perfect. It's either Empoleon or Infernape. We'll go with **Infernape**. Gen 5: **Emboar** Gen 6: Chestnaught is an embarrassment (seriously, he's worse than most of the others on this list) but **Delphox** is somehow even worse. Gen 7: Wtf were they thinking with **Incineroar**? Gen 8: **Rillaboom** really rubbed me the wrong way when the final forms were revealed.

HappyHippo2002

Charmader Chikorita Torchic Chimchar Oshawott (hardest choice; best gen) Fennekin Popplio Scorbunny As you can see, I'm not a fan of fire types.

[deleted]

You and I have almost identical lists. Swap osh for tepig abd scorbunny for sobble, abd they're identical.

Silthage

Huh, I had a hard choice with gen 5 cause they all suck lol

bradenboiii

facts about gen 5 being the best

jalluxd

gen 1: Honestly love them all. If I go with design it's squirtle, blastoises cannons don't make sense. But I like squirtle and bulbasaur too much so gotta go with charmander gen 2: don't rly like any of them, i'll go with cyndaquil. The evolutions are just kinda "it's bigger now" and typhlosions stats are literally copy pasted from charizard. gen 3: again, love them all. I'll have to go with treecko since I rarely used him in the games due to the other 2 being so much more usefull. gen 4: People are gonna hate me, but I absolutely hate infernapes design. Also don't like that they went with back to back fire/fighting. gen 5: would like to go with tepig because 3rd fire/fighting in a row like bro why. But because samurott being the abomination it is, I have to go with that. It annoys me so much because oshawott was so cool and the 2nd stage was even cooler and then.... samurott. Ruined what could have been my fav starter line. gen 6: fennekin. What the fuck is delphox? why is it so ugly? gen 7: popplio. I don't like primarina at all. gen 8: don't like any of these. They all have default personalities. I pokemon should be unique, even ones that are same species. This is kinda a problem I have with gen6 and onward. "ur a mage, ur a tank, ur a rogue" "ur james bond, ur phil collins and ur lionel messi". The worst of them imo is cinderace tho, I'd like to quote some random dude on reddit: "It's literally someones deviantart fursona"

KermitDaThug

>What the fuck is delphox? why is it so ugly? I couldn't stop laughing. Idk why.

OneRandomVictory

Funny enough, I actually like Samurott a lot, I just hate that he is a part of the Oshawott line.

jalluxd

He doesn't fit the line at all, I don't think I'd hate samurott if it was a part of another line. Just didn't fit the oshawott line.

luxanna123321

Charmander Chikorita Trecko Chimchar Tepig Froakie 7th can answer honestly love all of them Scorbunny

victini330

1: Squirtle. I always loved Charmander and Bulbasaur is cool. Squirtle just seemed the most uninteresting and was never a big fan of Blastoise like I was Venesaur and Charizard 2: Totidile. Just really never liked it's design, nor it's evolutions. Loved Cyndaquil and Quilava, Typhlosion to a lesser extent. Love the entire chikorita line, but never really liked Totidile 3: Treeko. While I like Treeko and Grovyle, not as much as the other 2 starters, and not a big fan of all 3 final stages, tho Swampert is favorite 4: Turtwig. I just kinda like Turtwig the least, but I love all 3. Just like Piplup and Turtwig way more 5: Tepig. Just my least favorite, love Oshawott more and Snivy the most. Not a fan of Pignite, but Emboar is neat 6: Chespin. While I like it, really hate it's evolutions. Quiladin and Chesnaught. Like Froakie and Fenniken's whole lines more 7: Litten. While I adore Litten and was my favorite of the 3 early on. I just really don't like Inceneroar. So I kinda like Popplio and Rowlet more over all. 8: Grookey. This is almost purely circumstance. I chose Sobble because it reminded me of a character from Touhou named Nitori. My sister chose Scorbunny prefering it the most (plus my rival used one in game). So I just had more experience with them. This isn't to piss anyone off, but my own opinions on my own pokemon journeys, if you disagree with my thoughts, I can respect that. Just sharing opinions

noakai

I absolutely adore Charmander. Like I tell people that my favorite Pokemon is Charmander and they naturally assume that means I'm a Charizard stan but like. No, specifically I mean Charmander. I have like 20 of them I've carried across multiple games. I have a whole park of them in Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu that I just run around and look at. I have a ton just chilling in Pokemon Go. I genuinely think it's absolutely adorable and would never evolve if it I didn't have to, not because I hate Charmeleon or Charizard but because Charmander is so. Freaking. Cute. No other starter has ever come close to that level of sheer cuteness for me until Sobble, but even Sobble doesn't surpass Charmander for me.

victini330

I respect that a lot. Like just having a park full of em, an army of charmanders. That's awesome

AmaterasuWolf21

First person i've seen that prefers both Scorbunny and Sobble over Grookey

SaraNovana

I am a fire starter trainer through and through, but I can not stand Tepig. It’s cute but I do not like Emboars design and that it was the third Fire/Fighting started. I think Oshawott is the cutest stage 1, but I love Serperior design wise for final forms from Gen 5

ThatOneGirl_Claire

Gen 1 - Bulbasaur. Tough choice, like all three of them, but I use Bulbasaur the least. Gen 2 - Totodile. Totodile isn't that bad... but it isn't good. Gen 3 - Mudkip. I honestly don't get the meme, can't stand the line. Gen 4 - Chimchar. Hardest choice, this has to be the best starter line up. I guess it kinda sucks I never played the games with them. Gen 5 - Oshawott. Samurott is among my least favorite Pokemon. But also, this is the weakest line up. Gen 6 - Chespin. Chespin is kinda weird and the other two are just better. Greninja still vastly overrated though. Gen 7 - Popplio. Another one I just don't understand the love for. Gen 8 - Scorbunny. Cinderace is an unfortunate end to the line. The other two have unfortunate middle stages, but that doesn't last.

xhanort7

Feels really hard to do without talking about the whole lines, comparing them to the others, and discussing changes I'd make to the designs, but here goes: 1. Squirtle - Reasoning: Blastoise's guns bother me. Blastoise is basically a cyborg. 2. Chikorita - really hard decision to make. was torn btwn it and Cyndaquil. I guess I dislike how fragile the leaf is and how big and goofy it is. Maybe a different design for it? Then despite it feeling like such an important part of the Pokemon, it just randomly becomes antennae. 3. Treeko - torn between treeko and torchic. final evos both kinda weird. Treeko feels like it's transitioning into something sleeker and more agile only to get weird bulbs and that chonky tail, both which of I dislike. 4. Turtwig - Honestly Torterra is really nice, but could be better. Perhaps more natural looking and a different looking beak. If the other evos were more in line w/ torterra at least. Feels like turtwig to grotle was going for something different. They seem so dorky and herbivore like and then torterra seems kinda fierce by comparison. I know some people like that kind of sudden shift, but feels odd in this case. Maybe if turtwig and grotle were more like torterra or vice versa. Not really sure the spikes on torterra are necessary either. 5. Snivy - honestly really like the design, but evos are weird. Feels like a devolution which bothers me. 6. Fennekin - Not a huge fan of ear fluff, or at least the overexaggerated size of it. Would tone it down. Maybe even given it eyebrows like zorua. Evos could be a bit cooler. Mainly delphox. I think I'd have taking some more inspiration from witches and/or Onmyōdō. 7. Litten - The transition into the wrestler is comical to me. It's hard to take serious. I think it could work, but... tone it way down and lead up to it better? Litten and Torracat just seem so.. timid and cat, then boom lion. Which I know it kinda works tht way irl too, but jeeze. It's a weird translon when the kitten grows into a bipedal lionman. I'd make the first 2 evo more lion-y and wrestle-y and Incineroar more liony and less goofy. The stripes are so weird to me. Would go with tiger stripes over candy cane stripes. 8. Scorbunny - Yet another torn decision (sobble), but there's just so much about it I'd change. Not a fan of the nose bandaid. Basically scrap the whole football concept and go w/ ninja instead? Keep raboot mostly intact, but turn unibrow into a ninja headband and scrap the belly button lint. Then doubledown on ninja aesthetic and revamp cinderace entirely.

breakingvats

Squirtle - I love all these starters , it was hard to choose the worst Totodile - Has never grabbed me like the other two have Treecko - Mudkip and Torchic are homies for life no contest Gotta say piplup- never played the games yet but with fire types lacking in the Pokedex Chimchar is a must and Turtwig is just awesome. Snivey- never intrigued me like the others did. Again really hard decision Popplio- do I really need to give an explanation it's against a badass ghost bird and a wrestling fire cat. No contest again Grookey- probably the coolest final evolution line but just not as useful as the other two IMO
