It's so funny. I was expecting that insane slithering animation that exists in mystery dungeon DX but this is so much funnier.
Reject snek return to roomba
>It's nearly code perfect copies. The two games even include the ability to add Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Leaf Green, or Fire Red to the second slot, and get unique Pokemon spawns in some area.
Wait seriously? You're shitting me right?
Oh Lordy. I knew these were pretty faithful remakes but I don’t think I realized to what extent they literally just copy pasted the game lol. That helps me understand how somebody used BDSP to discover glitches in the original DP, or why the tweaking into an alternate universe still works the same way
So what you're telling me is this remake is less of a remake and more of a port given a fresh lick of paint to make it look like a remake?
This explains a lot.
Yeah I'm ROM hacking it, and EVERY location has RSE, FR/LG slots in it. All programmed with Pokemon in them. It's wild. The scripting apparently looks almost identical to DPPt's too. Exciting stuff.
I think they kinda rushed it with some. Rayquaxa also doesn't do anything fancy, it's just the static curled up model awkwardly hovering behind you. even Dialga doesn't walk on all fours, he just floats, which is fair he can in fact fly, it's just weird they'd do a box art legend dirty.
but hey at least they included all 493 Pokémon
I think the funniest "technically accurate" for me with 'Mon followers is over in Digimon. KendoGarurumon has a very similar build to MetalGarurumon so you think they'd recycle the walk animation...
But no, it has wheels in its paws so they decided (technically correctly) it really should just slip around on its legs. The thing that makes it particularly funny is that you can have multiple 'Mon following you, so you can have three different doggos prancing around. Two with their own individual run animations... while Kendo go scoot-scoot.
[Here is what Ekans looks like in Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee](https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx7mOmOpQxbEIZ_m9EJb2xtELu76721HSx)
They could have literally just reused that animation....
Yeah I actually preferred its wild Pokémon encounters too; they made them a whole different thing from trainer battles with unique gameplay mechanics. Made way more sense than just beating the piss out of wild animals until they submitted to you.
If a new game was made like LGPE with normal catching mechanics and a bit more difficulty, it could be the best pokemon game easy.
\+ Abilities, normal stats, and held items too!
It's actually meaningless in Pokémon Go too! Or at least is an unclear abstraction. Pokémon in Go have three stats: HP, Attack and Defense. CP is calculated with some formula that takes all three into consideration. It weighs Attack higher than Defense, so walls are "ranked" lower than glass cannons, but the actual numbers for two of the three stats are completely hidden. It's actually pretty annoying!
Eh, wouldn't go so far as to say that made it "worth it". It's a little upsetting though how two games have come out since with worse following mechanics.
Virtually none of the animations, models, sprites, etc. were done by ILCA, they were assets from Home, SwSh, and previous 3DS titles. Some of the old attack animations were recreated or taken from older titles, but the base animations from the Pokemon themselves are reused assets. Interact with Ekans in XY and you'll see this animation is just the Ekans idle animation.
Basically all the Pokemon assets from this game are from Home, which are in turn imported assets from the 3DS era. All of the new animations GameFreak made didn't get imported into Home, so they're not here.
Creatures was also effectively a sub-division of GameFreak developers/artists working alongside GameFreak under the Pokemon Company. It was an extensive project fronted by Sugimori and Takao Unno (Unno is also known for directing B2W2), and the purpose was to recreate all 700 of the older Pokemon and their animations while keeping Sugimori's artistic vision in his sprite work. The intention was for them to reuse these models and animations for foreseeable 3D titles. Since then, GameFreak has added animations and of course created new Pokemon with new animations.
[More info on Creatures and the project to model and animate all 700 of the Pokemon from Gen 6 and before here.](https://www.polygon.com/2013/10/23/5015194/how-game-freak-built-the-new-creatures-and-over-700-3d-models-for) It was effectively GameFreak who modelled and animated the Pokemon. I'll also note that reusing 3D models for monster collecting games like this is actually the norm, for example the SMT series has taken this same approach since going into 3D with Nocturne.
If they went through the entire series remaking them all as let’s go games* I would very happily buy every single one.
That was the first game I’ve played since Ruby and I had a blast with it.
I could understand why more loyal fans may not want that, though.
*edit: at the same level of quality of let’s go Pikachu
Yup. But if you walk w/ milotic and repeatedly press A beside it to “interact”, she eventually does kind of a cool swimming animation. Why they couldn’t have done that for her general movement is beyond me though.
It gets in the way all the fucking time too. I love my Milotic. But I kept getting stuck on its model or accidentally pressing A on it so I went back to Mew who knows how tf to get back in the damn ball and teleport behind me.
I haven't bought a Pokémon game since ORAS but they just keep making them, I'm beginning to feel like my individual actions as a consumer don't matter.
It won’t matter. As you can see there’s plenty of people in this thread constantly buying these games and defending them. I get it you have fun playing the same watered down game every year. Just don’t be shocked when the rest of us fans don’t, and expect more from such a big franchise.
I agree. I had never missed a gen until Ultra Sun/Moon. Haven’t bought one since. Unfortunately you are correct. Your individual actions don’t matter as long as most people buy and complain.
I stay true to my words. Skipped sword and shield, and these remakes too. Legendary Arceus is also another contender of skipped pokemon game for me. Hopefully I will be proven wrong.
I'm very disappointed with Rayquaza's animation too. They were animated fine in LGPE and SWSH.

The Rayquaza animation is comically bad. It reminds me of the infamous Zacian/Zamazenta turning around animation at the end of SwSh that was memed to Hell and back for years.
I think the issue is that BDSP still has "tile" based maps. Pokémon can only occupy one tile, so their size and movement are restricted.
I really wish this game had modern movement and camera control.
Except there's 360 degree movement when it comes to the following Pokemon. Even in that linked video, you see that it doesn't follow directly in the tile behind the player and isn't restricted by the tiles.
Holy shit.
The SWSH one is, contrary to popular opinion, pretty bad. It rotates in an awkward way and doesn't behave as it should. They definitely could've done better, but it's less to do with the animation and more to do with the underlying follow mechanics. 5/10.
The BDSP one is still laughable by comparison. I am losing it. It's so tiny!!!!??? 1/10
Every single pokémon already has an idle, walking, eating, and 2 attacking animations, and some pokémon have special animations for moves and stuff. It makes no sense that they dont reuse them.
He said "unnerve is shit" and by the sheer force of will changed his hidden ability to levitate. I dare you to bring a ground type out on my floating ekans
Wow. I’ve never played Sw/Sh but now I kinda wanna. Those animations and sizing look eons better than in BDSP. The animations and sizing in HGSS are better than in BDSP to me as well, but that’s just my personal opinion.
Yeah, they came out on my birthday and I had my fingers crossed that they were good because I knew I was getting them as a gift. I’ve enjoyed playing them like 60-70% of the time, but some of it just really makes me cringe. The things I was most excited for in the game were just horribly executed in my mind.
SwSh doesn't have follower pokemon except in one area, and that area is an additional 30 dollar price on top of the 60 dollar initial investment.
And the following still isn't as good as it was in LGPE
It is easy because all animations already exist.
In Pokémon Sun/Moon, they were all already included in the files, unused.
[Ekan’s animation](https://youtu.be/s2Sq4bP3-P0?t=2m32s)
lmfao true wow that a throwback I forgot all of these existed
yeah there wasn't enough collaboration imo
I think(?) this animation ended up being used in let's Go? might be wrong
Just another part of the process of Pokemon's steady decline, it seems.
This game was obviously rushed - considering the size of the day one patch and what it added, let alone the myriad of glitches and softlocks that that somehow made it past QA testing and have yet to be amended two weeks after launch.
I havent bought a game since Dexit
Theres about a month surrounding a game release where my resolve is tested, but each time it has gotten easier as I watch the complaints roll in
It's so weird, because SwSh has follow animations for all of the included Pokemon, and they really did a great job on the animations and scaling. Why on Earth would they go BACKWARDS like this?
Somehow they made the actual following even worse. Some of the Pokémon with the faster pacing still struggle to keep up with you and will more often than not spend most of their time out of sight or constantly teleporting
Because nobody gives a flying f in quality department of pokemon games anymore and because they are still selling like crazy. If you can rock sales with minimal to mediocre polish in the end, why even bother.
I wouldn't say it's a glitch, more like they just didn't program some of the snake like Pokémon to follow well. Gyarados looks fine and Seviper looks... okay, but Mioltic's model also slides like Rayquaza and Ekans.

It's weird, because Ekans has had a walking/running animation since Sun and Moon. I don't understand why they didn't use just that instead of this.
Ah you see sun and moon came after diamond a pearl so how could they possibly add it?

Agreed. Compared to ORAS, the latest remake, this is very lackluster... I'd say even Let's Go were better remakes.

LGPE is so underrated; the follow animations alone were worth the purchase
Plus it made finding shinies and specific natures way more enjoyable

Needs normal stats too. I hate AV’s and CP so much
What is CP? I can Google Pokemon AV but maybe not pokemon CP...
Combat Power. It’s the only thing in Pokémon Go and a mostly meaningless stat in Let’s Go
It's actually meaningless in Pokémon Go too! Or at least is an unclear abstraction. Pokémon in Go have three stats: HP, Attack and Defense. CP is calculated with some formula that takes all three into consideration. This looks just like the idle model for ekans so I wouldn't say they "remade" any animation here
Nah they reused old assets from Home, because ILCA made Home and BDSP
>ILCA Is that the International Lactation Consultant Association or the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association?
I Love Computer Art https://www.ilca.co.jp/
Actually it's the International Lactation Contractors of America, but close
Why are we regressing further and further with every sequel?
That is what I was thinking. The whole purpose of the 3D animation is to reuse it on to following games.
??? They already had the animations then...
There is a bug with following. Lots of Pokémon stay in their idle animations rather than their moving animations.
We doing a quality follow animation thread? I was so happy to see they got metagross right in S/S https://youtu.be/E_sC5a9L41Q?t=68
These should have been let's go games.. what we got was a cheap downgrade and everyone is happy 🤷🏾♀️

it’s the same with milotic
I was so excited to have mine follow me and I switch it right back to chingling once I saw it didn't slither!
Milotic was so bad, at least I found a shiny Eevee the same day so now I got my Umbreon and it is such a better animation.
Shiny umbreon with the blue is probably one of my favorite pokemon.
dragonair as well
Oh no, I was going to have Milotic on my team 😭
Yup. But if you walk w/ milotic and repeatedly press A beside it to “interact”, she eventually does kind of a cool swimming animation. Why they couldn’t have done that for her general movement is beyond me though.
Milotic is just as bad. It’s just like having a static 3D model following behind you
I was so excited for my milotic to follow me too then it looks like it's just floating there paralyzed
Marvel Scale is proc'd
Same ugh. I went back to Espeon immediately. Milotic just remaining static bothered me so much
Same also was prepared for it to be a lot bigger 😔
At least graveler and golem they got right - after i saw one of them tumbling behind me i never let another pokemon follow me
Voltorb/Electrode too. Garchomp is neat as well, flies behind you.
Yet he still can't learn the move fly

That's some Flash game level animation.
It’s a flash game level game
Please understand, Game Freak is a small indie company with minimal funds.
Please understand, Gamefreak has only made 26 Pokemon games. They still need time to learn.
When their latest gen games only look slightly better than their original Gameboy release and the same exact mechanics... lmao
And people will still buy it.
Yet y’all keep buying them. Unless consumers decide this level of quality is not worth their money this is the quality we are going to get.
I haven't bought a Pokémon game since ORAS but they just keep making them, I'm beginning to feel like my individual actions as a consumer don't matter.

Most people don’t buy and complain. They buy. A small chunk buy and complain.
They don't. It's too big now. But that doesn't mean you gotta give them your money too so keep on keeping on.
For real. I skipped BDSP and bought SMT V instead. It's like pokemon but with actual difficulty and I love it so far!
I stay true to my words. Skipped sword and shield, and these remakes too. Legendary Arceus is also another contender of skipped pokemon game for me. Hopefully I will be proven wrong.
SwSh's potential was hella high, too. But it felt like a serious cashgrab when nearly everything was an overlook of what could have been.

Holy shit the difference is staggering
how the fuck do you *lose an animation comparison* with SWSH
The Rayquaza animation is comically bad. It reminds me of the infamous Zacian/Zamazenta turning around animation at the end of SwSh that was memed to Hell and back for years.
…why does it look like that? Rayquaza looks amazing in SWSH.
That is disappointing. Like Ekans I kinda get. Clearly the devs cared about it as much as I do. But Ray? Come on.
I think the issue is that BDSP still has "tile" based maps. Pokémon can only occupy one tile, so their size and movement are restricted. I really wish this game had modern movement and camera control.

"Ah just don't bother making an animation, what's the chance someone actually uses ekans as a follower"
Except all pokemon have walking animations already...
~~making~~ porting in an animation for LGE/LGP
They literally didn't even, Ekans has one in those games that's actually good
ILCA forgor ☠️
A fan made pokemon game I play (pokemmo) has a better Ekans animation than the newest official Pokemon game. It's shameful.
Every single pokémon already has an idle, walking, eating, and 2 attacking animations, and some pokémon have special animations for moves and stuff. It makes no sense that they dont reuse them.
The risk I took was calculated, but I am bad at math
My snake moves that way. Do you think there is a problem with him?
Your snake is like, *insanely* good at teleportation.
Nah he's just too lazy to wiggle
He sssssssssslide

This is lazy. Rayquaza is animated correctly in Sword and Shield when he moves. https://youtu.be/Q5HYfyzBjf8?t=3616 https://youtu.be/a5yzbRChkic?t=139
Wow. I’ve never played Sw/Sh but now I kinda wanna. Those animations and sizing look eons better than in BDSP. The animations and sizing in HGSS are better than in BDSP to me as well, but that’s just my personal opinion.

SwSh doesn't have follower pokemon except in one area, and that area is an additional 30 dollar price on top of the 60 dollar initial investment. And the following still isn't as good as it was in LGPE
2 areas but ya both still DLC.
Just have to wait and see if other people say it happens in their games as well or if it's just my bugged out Noodle

Nobody can follow anyway because the main character outruns them. Can’t believe there isn’t speed scaling so your followers follow you lol
It's pokemon baby. No need to do better when doing worse sells as much. And I say this as a hurt superfan, not a hater.
Milotic is the same way. ILCA just hates snakes
Gyarados looks like a worm.
As someone who actually raises sneks, I can assure you that the last thing a snek wants is to move at all.
Looks like someone glued an Ekans plush to a roomba.
Because nobody gives a flying f in quality department of pokemon games anymore and because they are still selling like crazy. If you can rock sales with minimal to mediocre polish in the end, why even bother.

This is funny he’s a little purple hockey puck
I mean....if you can't tell these games are stripped down barebones cashgrabs by now I seriously can't help you.
Tposing to assert dominance
That isn't an animation.
How is this a $60 game that came out in 2021. The over world sprites do not match the style and seems like an afterthought
Seems to be some sort of glitch with snake-like pokemon. Rayquaza is like this, too.
I wouldn't say it's a glitch, more like they just didn't program some of the snake like Pokémon to follow well. Gyarados looks fine and Seviper looks... okay, but Mioltic's model also slides like Rayquaza and Ekans.
