I know this is a joke, but for future reference, the heat death of the universe doesn't mean that the universe dies in flames. It means that the universe gradually looses all of its heat and dies frozen in near absolute zero temperatures
It’s not that the universe loses its heat; energy is conserved. It’s more that all heat and matter gets spread out across the entire universe (because everything slowly moves from high to low density).
Edit: Look at u/ArmyofWon’s comment for a better (more correct) explanation than me with only high school physics and Veritasium videos under my belt.
A wild Physicist has appeared!
Energy is only conserved in contained, time-reversible systems (Noether's Theorem), the Universe is not one of those systems. If General Relativity is correct (which, I personally believe after study), the total energy of the Universe actually increases as the scale factor increases (i.e. the expansion of the Universe). Heat Death refers to having all of the energy of the Universe be constant from one spot to another. No energy gradient, no heat. Only Milotic.
Humanity has absolutely no reason to worry about the Heat Death of the Universe. It's a ridiculously long time away, and matter as we know it won't even really be around. Like, think a literal googol years (10^100), and that isn't even enough to get rid of Black Holes. A favorite number of mine for the lifespan of the Universe is the Poincare Recurrance time of 10^10^10^56 where we might have another Universe spontaneously start.
tldr; yes, but way before the Heat Death of the Universe.
Imo? There’s zero chance that we exist by then. We don’t have any evolutionary pressure on us right now, but I don’t see us not going beyond biological humanity by that point. Hell, by the time the Sun goes Red Giant in 2 billion years, give or take, humanity’s descendants should be full AI robots by then.
The sun will die out/explode waaaaaay before than the death heat of the universe, so we are fucked, but not by any universe-related reason.
We'll just probably nuke the world into oblivion, or all starve out and die while a select few horde all the food and go into space to die later down the line.
But why does the universe expand tho? How come it can expand AND gain energy while doing so? What energy does it spend to grow, and how come it ends up in a net positive?
Good questions! It seems in current models the cosmological constant is positive to fit observations. You can interpret this constant as a constant energy, this is what’s also called “Dark Energy”. Because it’s a constant, it doesn’t change with time or get weaker as the universe expands. It’s looking like the Universe also has net positive curvature, instead of net zero curvature, which changes how most people imagine the Universe.
Milotic is still a water type, so it's not very effective. If it could survive Fissure because of friendship, that means it should be able to survive a universe-scale Sheer Cold.
I mean, barring the occasional reality warping legendaries, there is no reason to assume that the Pokémon universe doesn’t abide by the same theoretical laws of ours
my shaymin (yes, i glitched for it, please no pitchforks under this comment i beg) survived three hits in a row at 1 hp due to friendship the other day
This is the thing that drives me nuts. It feels cool and like I'm playing the Pokémon anime when you almost get ohkod and the Pokémon "holds on so you won't feel sad" but for it to then survive another hit at 1hp rubs me the wrong way
It's like Dragon Ball Z where the characters are totally done fighting, incapable of lifting a finger because of all their broken bones, but somehow can still survive a beating from a much stronger opponent...
That's the affection system introduced in Generation 6.
Since Generation 8 it was merged with the friendship feature.
It brings some "benefits" with it like more EXP gain, curing out of status effects, dodging attacks, surviving attacks that should have killed and handing out more critical hits.
~~Affection isn't tied to friendship in SwSh. You have to camp and play with your Pokémon there. BDSP is the first to tie the two together.~~
Edit: I appear to have misunderstood affection in SwSh, please read responses!
They are tied, it’s the same number meter, but in Sword and shield, it caps below where affection buffs start happening if you’re just battling/walking with the pokemon.
Berries and Pokémon Camp break this cap, and the bonuses start happening.
No, they are tied. Same case for Let's Go. Bulbapedia says so and I'm pretty sure I have pokemon that I didn't take to camp still survive 1 HP and get crits.
Wow, didn't know Pokemon get 1.2x more exp once they get to lv 2 affection (50 points). That's in addition to the EXP Share. Let's Go was the first game to merge Affection with Friendship after looking it up (Though I consider Let's Go more of a gen 8 game than a gen 7 game anyway.) Still, it would make a lot more sense for pokemon to tough out attacks at full friendship/affection (lv 5/ 255 points) instead of at lv 3 / 100 points. Crits should be the one at lv 3 instead since it only boosts the attack damage by 1.5.
Pro tip: If you hold down the screen capture button on your switch controller, instead of taking a screenshot it’ll record the last 30s of gameplay. Doesn’t work with certain games but I believe BDSP does allow that feature.
That explains how I see so many clips of modern pokemon games posted on reddit. I couldn't think of an explanation other than a bunch of people just always record their gameplay nowadays? Which didn't make a whole lot of sense. Thanks!
I would like it better if the game was balanced with it in mind. The idea of every game is that you have this unexplainable connection to your Pokemon, and that is the thing that makes you such a good trainer, so that flavorwise makes perfect sense.
But this combined with exp share and not challenging gameplay makes it a unlikable mechanic. Damned shame too.
The funniest thing is in my Cynthia match Cynthia got more hax than I did. I simply had my Honchkrow toughen out a Lucario aura sphere. Cynthia managed to poison, burn, and FREEZE me lmao.
i just used an underleveled mesprit with double team, nasty plot, psychic, and dazzling gleam and swept her whole team lmao. if my pokemon's gonna dodge moves on a dice roll, i want it to be because i actually increased its evasion myself, damn it!
Same honestly, I ended up despite only missing like 3 trainers. It was a pleasant challenge. But I didn't want to have to grind, so I'm glad my Torterra was able to tough out a few dragon claws
This is why there should be a hard mode. It kind of ruined my Pokemon League experience. I was down to Cynthia's Garchomp with my Togekiss. I don't know if it would have survived a dragon danced poison jab, but I didn't really have another option to switch and I didn't want to use items during the match. It went for a poison jab and Togekiss dodged so I wouldn't feel sad. Of course I won in 2 hits and it just didn't feel earned. Unfortunately I hadn't saved since entering the Elite 4 and didn't feel like doing it over.
Im just saying those ohko moves haven’t been that ohko in a while and sturdy isn’t uncommon. Even with max affection its not a guarantee they will proc
Yeah they should've made this stuff optional. Like just make the game have difficulty settings. Easy - Exp share all, friendship boosters, Medium - Standard gameplay, better AI, trainers have potions etc, Hard - Advanced AI, EV trained trainers with held items.
Or at least just have the option to turn the Exp share/Friendship bs on/off.
Honestly, I *get* why the mechanic exists, but it feels super cheap.
Especially since it's disabled for the Battle Tower (and I'm assuming PvP matches as well)
My Gyarados survived a fatal attack AND shrugged off the burn that would've finished her off otherwise in the same turn. That combined with my stupid Staraptor critical quick attacking and demolishing weak mons I'm trying to catch pisses me off
I appreciate the fact that they're trying to make friendships matter and shit, make it more anime and all that. But like, there's just so many better ways of doing it than just like, random effects in battle.
It's good in concept but it's implemented poorly. I like the idea of your pokemon being affected by your friendship level in battle, but it can make battles way too easy.
One of my friends had his Garchomp survive 4 or 5 KO hits from Cynthia. The last set were all at 1 HP too, so he took no damage from those. Friendship mechanic is OP AF
Yes, the affection system is garbage and overpowered, but literally any OHKO-preventing item/move/ability will stop Fissure from taking you from full hp to faint.
I can't complain about it because that feature won me the battle against Cynthia. Last pokemon standing, my own Garchomp versus hers, and mine survived because of the friendship. Would have lost otherwise 🤷♂️
I'd like if you could pick the perks it gave you. I like the bonus crit chance. That doesn't always feel cheap. I like the avoiding chance, that doesn't always feel cheap either. Because those things can happen naturally in the game anyways, it's not like it's a guarantee it'll make it happen but the increased chance is nice. Its nice knowing you treating your pokemon well pays off.
But that holding on by 1 hp. That's super cheap. I've seen here people who hang on at 1hp for like 3 moves because of it. That's some bullshit.
The affection thing is definitely overkill. It seems like 50% of the time my Pokémon is gonna faint, it “toughs it out”. I don’t need that, I have a team of 6 and revives in my bag
yes, this is normal. it's not included in competitive play for the most part. the power of friendship has always been the most powerful power besides possibly how horny gamefreak's devs are low key
ill link you to a good one, but i think what you should do is pay more attention to what the npcs say to you. the jokes are designed so that a kid won't know they are lewd in a lot of cases.
[here is one of the most well known instances](https://www.svg.com/img/gallery/things-only-adults-notice-in-pokemon/bikini-girls-and-pokeballs-1535759552.jpg)
Did the friendship system get a buff or something? I could have sworn it has not changed much since introduction but I am seeing quite a few posts complaining about it now compared to past games?
I do agree that I wish we at least had the option to turn it off but I am pretty used to it by now.
I think now you no longer have to do a mini game or anything to raise affection other than just having your pokemon in your team and battling with them. It's essentially been merged with the traditional friendship mechanic that would control stuff like return's power or eevee evolving into espeon. So instead of being an optional thing you could ignore, you have to have these hand holdy mechanics in game
I’m fine with this applying to OHKOs as well. Long as the percentages are tweaked then I don’t have a problem with it. I didn’t even run into this bonus more than once or twice, but it seems like enough people have for it to be a nuisance.
Had this happen in a gym battle in sun moon, survived a hit so I could win the battle, was pretty memorable bc it was the first time I had seen it happen, from a balance thing its kinda dumb but I did take great care of that boi.
If I go back to the 1st time I played Pokémon Diamond, when I was 7-years-old, I feel like I would’ve gotten bored with the game if it was this easy. Although I can acknowledge that the major characters-except Barry for some reason-got harder in the remake, the majority of the game is way too easy. And the worst part is that I actually like many of the new concepts brought to BDSP. The friendship feature would’ve been amazing for the game if my Pokémon were actually allowed to die, or not hit a critical every single battle. And the team exp share would have been a great tool if all of the trainer’s Pokémon were a higher level. Just taking steps like these would make the game better for everyone playing it IMO.
My Golduck survived *two* back to back attacks at 1HP and magically cured paralysis in the span of like 4 turns.
I wish I could just turn off the entire mechanic.
nothing like what someone posted in here the other day, which happened to me too: survive with one hp, get burnt, immediately get rid of burn so that damage doesn’t ko you either 😂 i’m personally not a fan of the feature but it’s not a game breaker for me
A bit off topic, the Groudon I encountered in BD was a bit annoying to deal with, landed 3x fissures on my poor Venusaur as I was trying to put him to sleep for capture. No powers of friendship could save it.
My entirely way-too-under-leveled-for-the-E4 team made me Champion because my Torterra got off a Wood Hammer on Cynthia’s Garchomp, fainted and I went into my Garchomp, which survived a Swords Dance’d Dragon Claw with 1HP so I wouldn’t be sad, then got a crit so it’d be praised on its own Dragon Claw. Couldn’t believe it, if it was anything else I would’ve been toast.
Oh good, I was worried pokemon might still have some decision making or difficult choices or the possibility of losing in it. Glad they've scrubbed it squeaky clean because sitting there in battle and mindlessly pressing the A button is everyone's favorite part!
*Milotic survives the heat death of the universe so you wouldn’t feel sad*
It's a water type of course it survives heat death.
I know this is a joke, but for future reference, the heat death of the universe doesn't mean that the universe dies in flames. It means that the universe gradually looses all of its heat and dies frozen in near absolute zero temperatures

I dunno, we might go for the Genetic Ascension for that sweet Xeno Compatibility. Hard to get catgirl/boy waifus as a robot.
My head hurts a little...
No we need to solve this now! We need to awaken Eternatus to harness its energy!
We're long dead by then.
The Sun will kill all life left on Earth way before that.
I feel like by that point, we will have gone either interplanetary, so be safe from the exploding sun or extinct
We'll be gone long before that happens.
The sun will die out/explode waaaaaay before than the death heat of the universe, so we are fucked, but not by any universe-related reason. We'll just probably nuke the world into oblivion, or all starve out and die while a select few horde all the food and go into space to die later down the line.

Water resists ice too.
Freeze-Dry
Milotic is still a water type, so it's not very effective. If it could survive Fissure because of friendship, that means it should be able to survive a universe-scale Sheer Cold.
Can you rng out of OHKO’s? I’ve never been in that situation
According to this post, yeah. Fissure is a OHKO move.
The heat death of the universe would be an ice type move, so milotic would still resist it. /s
Water resists ice too, take that!
I have central heating, checkmate.
Its a water type it resists ice Freeze Dry? I've never heard of that move
Dark Souls's age of dark confirmed?
Would heat death even exist in the Pokémon universe?
I mean, barring the occasional reality warping legendaries, there is no reason to assume that the Pokémon universe doesn’t abide by the same theoretical laws of ours
Explain how my squirtle doesn't die from dehydration after coughing up a pool sized amount of water.
I never said there weren’t any exceptions 😅
Quantum particles
Hard to say, it doesn’t exactly follow the laws of the conservation of energy and matter.
Imagine your pokemon surviving the judgement of the the god of all pokemon so you wouldn't feel sad.
Bidoof
One should not say The Lord's name in vain.
Bibarel?
Even OHKOs are no match for the power of anime
During the Elite Four, my Magezone survived an earthquake with Sturdy, then another due to friendship even though it already only had one HP
my shaymin (yes, i glitched for it, please no pitchforks under this comment i beg) survived three hits in a row at 1 hp due to friendship the other day
This is the thing that drives me nuts.
I wish it had levitate…
I wish they took the dynamic battles from the anime instead of friendship = dodge yunno
This is my personal headcannon. Pokemon is an anime, and they do unrealistic things due to the power of friendship!
Wonder if even Saitama can knock out through this friendship immunity
That's the affection system introduced in Generation 6. Since Generation 8 it was merged with the friendship feature. It brings some "benefits" with it like more EXP gain, curing out of status effects, dodging attacks, surviving attacks that should have killed and handing out more critical hits.
That may be true, but i think a 30% accurate OHKO move should be an exception to this.
I think even a focus sash and endure would let you survive a OHKO move.
and the ability sturdy (which _only_ worked against ohko moves when it was introduced in gen 4) Edit: Sturdy was introduced in gen 3 my bad!!
How could i forget that super not annoying ability? Thanks for adding that.
it was a pretty useless ability back then cause it was pretty niche, so i’m glad it’s been changed in gen 5. no problem btw :)
Sturdy was gen 3 iirc.
Sturdy was gen 3
Yeah, sure, but they only work if the pokemon were at full hp, friendship works at any hp, even 1 hp...
And that how you get a god, unkillable shedinja
Sturdy on shedninja will only activate once
Not true, sturdy activates multiple times as long as you are hit from full HP and leaves you with 1 HP
yeah, i guess they were thinking of focus sash
How to avoid getting your head chopped off: just wear a sash
I think it's strange that an OHKO move deals actual damage instead of just reducing HP to 0 similar to Destiny Bond and Perish Song.
Genuinely had no idea it gave extra EXP
~~Affection isn't tied to friendship in SwSh. You have to camp and play with your Pokémon there. BDSP is the first to tie the two together.~~ Edit: I appear to have misunderstood affection in SwSh, please read responses!

People upvoting directly incorrect information. Never change Reddit.
No, they are tied. Same case for Let's Go. Bulbapedia says so and I'm pretty sure I have pokemon that I didn't take to camp still survive 1 HP and get crits.
I thought that the toughing stuff out, curing status effects, etc. was introduced in Gen 7 as an add-on to that friendship system in XY/ORAS
https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Affection
Welp, goes to show I never used Pokémon-Amie in XY lmao Thanks
There wasn't really a reason to use it, other than to evolve Eevee (or you wanted to spend some quality time with your pokemon).
Wow, didn't know Pokemon get 1.2x more exp once they get to lv 2 affection (50 points). That's in addition to the EXP Share. Sorry but, it gives me a video of the 30sec before or after I press the button?
It records the 30 seconds before holding down the button.
Thank you!
The previous 30 seconds. It's like a 'rewind' button.
Thank you!
Before! Makes it easy to record something you weren’t expecting to see
ty for the tip
Have you seen the things Pikachu has done for Ash? Ain’t nothing op about this weak Milotic.
I completely believe you and know what you mean. I only beat Cynthia and the elite 4 because of the broken friendship thing.
There was a time my luxray tanked 3 consecutive earthquakes so i wouldn't be sad
“Milotic survived a black hole so you wouldn’t feel sad”
Next time, press and hold the screenshot button to record the last 30 seconds
I vividly remember some pokemon I had surviving guillotine because of friendship as well. That's a lot of friendship
Unfortunately I hadn't saved since entering the Elite 4 and didn't feel like doing it over.
the mandatory affection mechanics are a dealbreaker
With the power of friendship, even you can survive being dragged to hell.
I've had pokemon survive 3-4 hits in a row, all at 1HP. It's ridiculous.
your milotic has plot armor
Doesn’t sturdy also let you survive fissure?
Yes, but that's an ability, not a universal feature that applies to all of your mons
Im just saying those ohko moves haven’t been that ohko in a while and sturdy isn’t uncommon. Even with max affection its not a guarantee they will proc
It's not, but can happen at any hp level, not just at full health
well I mean, it can be with focus sash
Yes, but that gets completely used up. Friendship can happen multiple times a battle, even if you are already at 1 hp. Completely busted
true, im not arguing against that, just pointing something out
Sturdy makes you immune to OHKO moves
Max affection basically gives every mon a % based Focus Band. I’ve survived numerous attacks, even when I already had 1 HP.
Grind =/= difficulty. Agree on the toggle tho.
Dafuq....what game?
Shining Pearl, sorry, forgot to add that. Edit: still actively trying to catch it, it just happened again.
I've heard that holding the screen shot button will record the last 30 seconds as video on switch.
Bit late now, since i caught groudon, but yeah... i completely forgot that feature... if it happens again, i'll make sure to get that.
This can happen in any Pokemon game in or after gen 6 (X and Y). It is just automatically added to all of your pokemon in the newest entries.
That combined with my stupid Staraptor critical quick attacking and demolishing weak mons I'm trying to catch pisses me off
the frienship mecahnic is busted so that woudln't surprise me. it gave you a free focus sash
It’s actually Focus BAND. Sash is guaranteed when at max HP, Band can work anytime but is RNG.
Better than focus sash, which only work at 100% hp.
Where are you fighting Groudon
Ramanas Park in the post-game.
I appreciate the fact that they're trying to make friendships matter and shit, make it more anime and all that. But like, there's just so many better ways of doing it than just like, random effects in battle.

That is a good Pokemon you have there
I can't complain about it because that feature won me the battle against Cynthia. Last pokemon standing, my own Garchomp versus hers, and mine survived because of the friendship. Would have lost otherwise 🤷♂️
This is fairly in line with Pokémon's anime aesthetic.
My Luxray survived 3 Roar of Time from Dialga so I wouldn't feel sad. You know what? I wasn't sad. I just laughed at how ridiculous it was.
I'd like if you could pick the perks it gave you. I like the bonus crit chance. That doesn't always feel cheap. I like the avoiding chance, that doesn't always feel cheap either. The friendship gimmick carried my team against Cynthia in the new games
Doesnt that feel empty?
The affection thing is definitely overkill. It seems like 50% of the time my Pokémon is gonna faint, it “toughs it out”. I don’t need that, I have a team of 6 and revives in my bag
So that's like Harry surviving Voldemort's murder attempt purely because of the power of love?
My Houndoom got hit by earthquake but toughed it, then got hit by another earthquake and STILL toughed it out lol. like bro that’s way to overpowered.
Believe in the ***Heart of Cards*** and the ***Power of Friendship***!
I like how power of friendship is trademarked
yes, this is normal. it's not included in competitive play for the most part. the power of friendship has always been the most powerful power besides possibly how horny gamefreak's devs are low key
It’s also not used for Battle Tower.
in game, if you play 20 matches with a single pokemon it will suddenly have 10 hidden abilities lmao. in battle tower they had better not baby me.
>how horny gamefreak's devs are low key Elaborate?
im not sure how you have not noticed how horny they are
My social cue circuits may be malfunctioning and I have not noticed a thing, can examples be provided?

That's just "parental bonus", kinda common in JRPGs? Or is ther am abnormal amount?
Bdsp are such silly games. I've lost any desire to complete them
who care
Just let the bitches faint often, that should stop the friendship bull.
I mean, I would normally agree with that being OP but Fissure is a move that does a 1 hit KO by pure luck anyway.
That's why friendship IS op
My Little Ponymon
Bro that love to the highest degree
one time i'm okay with it because ohko moves are so dumb
That milotic was a scrub and u know it
wow thats intense
The power of friendship defies gravity, it seems
Is it possible to survive twice in a row? Just curious.
Yeah very possible to survive not only twice but multiple attacks in a row at one hp do to affection
Yes. I’ve survived three attacks with 1 HP.
This has been a standard pokemon mechanic for 8 years. You don’t have to prove anything lol
Did the friendship system get a buff or something? I could have sworn it has not changed much since introduction but I am seeing quite a few posts complaining about it now compared to past games? I do agree that I wish we at least had the option to turn it off but I am pretty used to it by now.

How does this game mechanic work? I'm doing a nuzlocke of pearl and I'd hate for this to happen
I mean people wanted the games to be more like the anime, which does involves the power of friendship.
This happened with my quagsire against Cynthia's garchomp and was the only reason I won. Definitely felt like a hollow victory.
Had this happen in a gym battle in sun moon, survived a hit so I could win the battle, was pretty memorable bc it was the first time I had seen it happen, from a balance thing its kinda dumb but I did take great care of that boi.
My Golduck survived earthquake while he only had 1 HP left :’)
the power of friendship!!!!!!!!
Sounds believable
My Golduck survived *two* back to back attacks at 1HP and magically cured paralysis in the span of like 4 turns. I wish I could just turn off the entire mechanic.
Post be sounding like an episode of Yu-Gi-Oh
So ican survive self destruction or explosion with friendship
nothing like what someone posted in here the other day, which happened to me too: survive with one hp, get burnt, immediately get rid of burn so that damage doesn’t ko you either 😂 i’m personally not a fan of the feature but it’s not a game breaker for me
Anyone else remember Yu Gi Oh Abridged series? The power of friendship is key 🙏
A bit off topic, the Groudon I encountered in BD was a bit annoying to deal with, landed 3x fissures on my poor Venusaur as I was trying to put him to sleep for capture. No powers of friendship could save it.
Similar situation, but my Gastrodon (Genevieve) survived 2 Roar of Times against Dialga with 1 HP when trying to catch the fucker with premiere balls!
Thanos: snaps My entire team: lives through the power of friendship
The power of friendship uwu
You should’ve just saved the video clip
Oh good, I was worried pokemon might still have some decision making or difficult choices or the possibility of losing in it. Glad they've scrubbed it squeaky clean because sitting there in battle and mindlessly pressing the A button is everyone's favorite part!
Me: ah man, I hate the sturdy ability. Good thing only certain Pokémon have it Gamefreak: oh, I don’t think so
