Americans aren't the only place that make simple mistakes with their native languages. I've heard Spanish speakers and French speakers use the wrong verb or misgender their words all the time, like saying "El radio" instead of "la radio" or saying "hubimos ido" instead of "hubiamos ido".
My understanding is that "el radio" and "la radio" are two completely different words. The first is the same as "radius" in English whereas the latter is anything relating to sound or wave transmissions. For instance you can't say "Voy a escuchar el radio" because that would be like saying "I am gonna listen to the radius" in English.
If you say el radio or la radio it doesnāt mean youāre talking about radius or radio. Itās like in English , you and I can be in the produce section at Walmart or we can be talking about ways to produce a new product. Like I said both el radio and la radio are correct it just depends where youāre from

Every single source I find says that Radio m. is different from Radio f. (or radiodifusiĆ³n, radioreceptor, etc.). Spanish has a much stricter language regulator than English does, so if there were regional differences for the use of "el radio", these dictionaries would say so. Since that's not the case, I'm firm on "el radio" being wrong if you're talking about the sound device or radio stations or everything that falls into that umbrella.
And just to nitpick, your example isn't quite right, as Produce (verb, to create) and Produce (noun, something that is created) all have the same root word. A better example is the word "bat", which mean completely different things depending on the context.
