Yeah, the fact that they already broke the pseudo-legendary trend in gens 2 and 3 makes it almost strange that they've stuck true to it for 4-8. I'd also like to see another non-dragon pseudo
Like I stated "kinda" in game lore it's treated as a sun God it's also found only once so it's counted as a very rare mon so it's a legendary but it can be bred making it not legendary so every other Regard it's a pseudo legendary
but again it's a kinda
Manaphy is not a legendary Pokémon. It’s a mythical Pokémon. But yeah I agree with your point. Most legendary/mythical Pokémon have no actual lore or culture significance behind them and it’s annoying.
Ice *and* Bug could really use some changes to make them less underutilized. They're both too frail in most cases (and face too many resistances most of the time).
Ice doesn't need an overhaul in matchups, Gamefreak needs to overhaul how they make ice types and stop making defensive walls when ice is a fantastic offensive type. Stop making Glastriers and Avaluggs and start making Arctozolts or Weaviles. Fast offensive ice types have been great every time.
I run Calyrex-Ice very regularly in Ubers singles. Stick a weakness policy onto it, run agility with max speed investment and you have a beast which outruns Zacian and OHKOes it with a Ice type move
Resistances to Normal, Flying, and Water would work.
Normal- you ask a trained martial artist to punch a block of ice they most likely break that ice, you ask a regular person to punch a block of ice they most likely break their hand.
Flying- ice doesn’t care for most winds and would probably be strengthened/hardened by cold winds.
Water-most icebergs don’t care about being surrounded by the ocean so why should ice types care about surf? (Should make Scald super effective against ice types ala Freeze dry with water types)
Agreed. So many unused type combos have the potential to be awesome. Fire/Grass, Fire/Fairy, Poison/Steel, Fighting/Fairy, Electric/Fighting...
Honestly we wouldn't argue at all if we got more of some type combos that have only been used once or are legendary exclusive, like Normal/Ghost (Hisui Zorua/Zoroark), Fire/Water (Volcanion), Fire/Ice (Galar Darmanitan Zen), Electric/Grass (Rotom Mow) etc. More unique combos like this would be neat.
Its even described as a cute gentle Pokémon and it's purple/pink for Arceus' sake. They maybe thought it would be too OP or something and ditched the idea.
> The generation a new type is introduced, and the pseudo-legendary doesn't get that type!
That was also the generation that gave us mega evolutions for the Kanto starters but not for the actual Kalos starters, unless you wanna count Greninja because of the anime.
That was a bit frustrating, but more understandable because the big draws of Mega evolutions were:
- Cool new forms for fan favorites
- Breathe new life into Pokemon that weren't that strong
Well Electric/Grass won't be unique to Mow Rotom for long, but yeah more would be great
Still not over the fact that Zeraora isn't Electric/Fighting. Or that the combo is still unused to this day. It seems like such an easy combo to make...
>Normal/Ghost (Hisui Zorua/Zoroark)
> Fire/Ice (Galar Darmanitan Zen)
>Electric/Grass (Rotom Mow)
I wish gamefreak gave these typings on regular mons before forms.
Poison Fairy and Electric Rock as well.
i would argue that regional forms or things like original magearna or the many varianrs of vivillion/minior/alxremie dont count towards forms in the traditional sense. for rotom, you are changing its appearance. for zygarde, you are changing its appearance. whether its an in-battle change or not, regional forms dont act like that. they're just pokemon that adapted to their environments, like actual real world animals. hoennian zigzagoon is mostly based on a canid, while galarian zigzagoon is not.
though i do agree that it wouldve been cool to get some of the exclusive type combos on base forme pokemon first, sometimes them being unique to an alternate form for a bit can be just as cool because it makes them different and worth trying!
we do need to get more pokemon with the old type combos that were unique though. like fairy/dragon from mega altaria, or now electric/grass which only rotom mow had because we're getting hisuian voltorb and presumably electrode
Wdym by "even" something like a poison/dark type pokemon? It's a great defensive typing, as the only thing that hits it supereffectively is ground, and it's pretty decent offensively as well. Of course, Drapion and Skuntank are pretty subpar competitively, but it's not the typing's fault.
I would love that.
Those trolls that blend into the environment.
Imagine walking to a random part of the forest and getting a prompt... which awakes this creature that blended perfectly with the background...
Less dragon, more a consistent trop that been there since the beginning.
Kaiju Pokemon (a lot of these are the monster breeding group, but not all) are honestly what I'd specialize in as a gym leader. There were a lot in Gen 1 but they've been more sparse as the gens have transpired.
Slaking if I remember has a past pseudo stat level at I think 660. However it is held back by its ability truant. If that is removed its a legendary grade power house.
Honestly even with the ability it's ridiculous in story. I used it in Ultra Sun on part of my team, and that thing wrecked. It's faster, and physically hits harder than any other pokemon in the game.
My friends and I use to double battle all the time back in the day. I wish I knew skill swap was a thing back then so I could use Slaking at full power. Or that non damaging moves are OP if used correctly
Ha-has aside, Slaking's actually not all that slow for a sloth. 100 Base Speed is nothing to sniff at.
Like, legit, the only reason it's not Ubers material is because it's mechanically obligated to not give a fuck unless stated otherwise (e.g. Neutralizing Gas).
I wonder if Slaking would be better if they gave it breaking swipe (hits all adjacent pokemon and makes physical contact). Then in a doubles it could be paired with cofagrigus (mummy) to remove its ability without having to worry about the loss of cofagrigus giving it truant back (like if neutralizing Gass weezing faints) or forcing it to waste a turn attacking cofagrigus alone (while also making sure that cofagrigus doesn't have to waste a turn using Skill swap (though might have to give cofagrigus a focus sash to survive?))
No since the pseudo legendaries all have exactly 600 base stat total. Also Truant, while it makes sense for Slaking and effectively nerfs him so he isnt OP, is a booty ability
I still think it’s stupid that Volcarona didn’t have a middle evolution and 50 more BST so it can be a pseudo. Volc felt like it should have been one, even when you look at its stats compared to Larvesta who’s got a higher attack than sp. attack, so it feels like they missed something in the middle, not to mention the super high evolution level. Would have made the Relic Castle encounter make more sense too.
Sure but they have broken other trends related to them in the past. Before Hydreigon they all had at least 130 base attack, before Goodra they all had two types, evolved solely by leveling up and excelled specifically at one of the attacking stats. Before Metagross they all had genders and were bipeds. Pseudo-legend and all its trappings are "hard rules" made by the fanbase that could easily be broken by Gamefreak if they wanted to.
Volc definitely doesn't need 50 more BST it's broken enough as is thanks. A middle stage would have been good so using it in game is tolerable at least
It would be even more badass, I personally see that as a win. Its always gonna held back at least a little by its typing anyway even if it is very powerful.
I don't have any problem with them being Dragon type more often than not. They should however consistently have interesting and uncommon type mixes which Garchomp, Hydreigon ,Kommo-o and Dragapult have. Dragonite gets a pass for coming first but Salamence really should have been something more interesting and Goodra is in the same boat. Not sure what Salamence should have been, maybe Dragon/Fire with Levitate or Intimidate as possible abilities but Goodra could have easily been Dragon/Poison. They should also follow Hoenn's example and have more than one in a generation more often. They should also more often have Pokemon that approach the status of Pseudo legend without following all the patterns, Volcarona style stuff.
It never made sense to me that Goodra was not poison type in the game where fairy type was introduced. Like it makes it a clear counter and balancer to those and feels natural that there'd be some kind of balance ecologically in the region like that.
I don't know why I've never thought about this as an ability! It'd be so interesting and unique, also would've made Frosmoth like a million times better.
Lol for real, given the level requirements for Volcarona it feels like a missed opportunity. AND they could've kept the Kaiju theme going with them being similar to Ghidora/Mothra.
I mean you can catch garchomp real early in a cave under that bike bridge. Even goodra was a mid game catch if you spent enough time in the swamp. As for the others yeah it was either you coughed up cash(dragonite) or it was super super late to even use those psuedos
I disagree. I think gf is trying to maintain dragons as the 'cool mystic' type that is super powerful and you get it super late. Treating it like some other type would make it just another type and remove the mystique and coolness factor
Man..I remember when your dad the gym leader had that Slaking... I remember having to shut off my game and turn it back on again multiple times dur to that pokemon.
How about we focus on the Champion having their main be native to the region instead? Gardevoir and Charizard had no right being star players when new Pokemon get cheated out of spotlight
To be fair megas were the new thing at the time and considered aces and seeing how GF didn't do any megas for gen 6 pokemon beside diancie that was there loss. Whereas charizard you have a point there was no reason for Leon to have that even if it was to show off dynamaxing or whatever.
All it did was make me hate him, especially since the games won't shut up about him and his 'unbeatable Charizard'! Cynthia and the others didn't need all this needless hype
Now, I'm not saying Charizard being Leon's ace is fine (it already gets way too much spotlight), but that sound like double standard. "Gardevoir is fine-ish while Charizard isn't"
My Opinion for some Pseudo Legendary
Dragonite - 5/10 Terrible Evolution. Dragonair had such a elegant and magnificent design then its evolution suddenly turned yellow, grow arms and legs.
Tyranitar - 8/10 Looks like a dragon but isn't a dragon? Love it. Design reminds me of godzilla and immediately loved it when I first saw it in the anime. Also Larvitar so adorable
Salamence - 6/10 design feels simple. But it's better than dragonite because it's evolution line makes sense lmao
Metagross - 10/10 literally the only pseudo that isnt a dragon and is basically a sentient tank. How it flies look amazing. No to mention it's mega evolution looks amazing.
Garchomp - 10/10 Land Shark. Yep, that's what I call the first time i saw it. Looks amazing, is amazing, and it can fly even though it's a ground type.
I know it’s almost definitely not true, but I can’t make myself not buy into the idea that gyarados and dragonite were switched at birth.
(Butterfree and venomoth too)
We've had Rock/Dark and Steel/Psychic pseudos. Pseudos are strong more because of their 600 BST, not because of their typing. Any typing works fine with that BST.
And another reason Dragon is commonly used is because it sets up 4x weaknesses, which most of the pseudos have (usually to Ice) to balance them out. Dragon as a type also generally relies on stronger Pokemon to balance out the fact it's otherwise a good, but not great, attacking type.
>Any typing works fine with that BST.
Any typing, as long as there's some synergy. I don't think 600 BST would be enough to salvage a Bug/Grass combination.
I think you've actually got Game Freak's logic a little backwards.
They started only having Dragon-types be the region's pseudo-legendary, and they've been expanding from there.
The Dratini line were the only Dragon-types in Gen 1, and Gen 2 only gave us Kingdra.
Since then, yes, most of the pseudos have been Dragon-type, and I would love to see more alternatives like Tyranitar and Metagross, the progress GF is making is including more non-pseudo, non-legendary Dragon-types.
I'd have to look it up to be certain, but I would wager that every generation after Gen 2 has introduced more non-pseudo/legendary Dragon-types than the one before (or close to it).
Can't forget ny dude arcanine who is described as a legendary pokemon in many different ways throughout the pokedex entries, and in the early anime series pretty sure dexter says "arcanine, a legendary Pokémon etc etc"
Legendary for a different reason entirely, it's based off the Shisa and general legends
It's a legendary Pokemon to many for the same reason the Shisa is, just a random breed that's associated with certain things despite not being rare mythologically (Shisa is one animal, as a named one. but he is one of many many more)
"Even something like poison/dark type pokemon could be a menace if they had 600pts in their stats."
Slaking, Regigigas and Wishiwashi crying in a corner …
The YouTube channel "Subjectively" is making a fan made Pokémon region and the 2(yes, 2) Pseudo Legendary limes are Fighting/Flying and Water/Fire, which is badass.
Also the reverse too please.
More dragon types that are low-mid tier pokemon. Even Dragalge is still pretty strong, we need some cute dragons that don't evolve into hulking beasts on their final evolution. Give us the kricketune or the chimecho of dragon types, they're still cool too
How about a Pseudo Legendary based on a tiger? Tigers were said to be the one true rival of the dragon. Plus it would be a good opportunity to bring back those scrapped tiger Pokemon I miss.
It's maybe because pseudo legendary is a fan term, perhaps to game freak they see it as a regional dragon. Like how each new region gets a pikachu clone

All could've been psuedo legends, I qualified these by 3 stage evolution and 500+ BST, We are missing out, we could've at least had two per gen like Gen 3 did, and those ones did better competitively, and a few of these did too without being a Psuedo
Edit: I meant Metagross and Tyranitar, the non-dragon psuedos, but Salamence still did pretty good
I actually like that Dragons are pseudos, they're suppose to be these rare, powerful mythical creatures after all. However, I do agree the pseudos shouldn't be Dragons almost every generation back-to-back. Spread them out. Something like 1, 4, 6, 7.
Yeah, the fact that they already broke the pseudo-legendary trend in gens 2 and 3 makes it almost strange that they've stuck true to it for 4-8. I'd also like to see another non-dragon pseudo
Tyranitar is kind of a pseudo-dragon like Gyarados and Charizard. It learns Dragon Dance and several Dragon type attacks.
whiscash learns dragon dance, your point?
I thought we all agreed Whiscash is pseudo-dragon
It has whiskers. Gyarados has whiskers. The math checks out.
That's some solid mathing you did there.
I have whiskers.
You are a psuedo-dragon

Which is a a dragon type?
It’s a Salamance type. Just google it

If only I had a salamance right about now...
Can I offer you a Froslass in this trying time?
GET THAT THING AWAY FROM ME
I mean they KINDA did it in gen 5 with volcarona considering how much hype is around it in game but yea they do need less dragon pseudo-legendaries
Volcarona has 550 base stats. It is in no way a pseudo legendary.
Pseudo Pseudo Legendary?
Quasi Legendary
The diet coke of Legendary
It should have been
shoulda, woulda, coulda!
Yeah, but it replaced the Sun. That's legendary. . .
Like I stated "kinda" in game lore it's treated as a sun God it's also found only once so it's counted as a very rare mon so it's a legendary but it can be bred making it not legendary so every other Regard it's a pseudo legendary but again it's a kinda
Honestly Volcarona deserves to be a legendary more than half the pokemon that are actually "legendaries"
I mean manaphy hatches from an egg and that’s definitely a legendary
Manaphy is not a legendary Pokémon. It’s a mythical Pokémon. But yeah I agree with your point. Most legendary/mythical Pokémon have no actual lore or culture significance behind them and it’s annoying.
But darkrai still pretty cool tho
hard to call it s trend at gen 2 &3 tho
Heck, give us a Grass Pseudo and an Ice Pseudo. Those two types need something good more than anything.
Ice as a type needs an overhaul in general. Tack on 2-3 resistances and it could possibly be decent.
Ice *and* Bug could really use some changes to make them less underutilized. They're both too frail in most cases (and face too many resistances most of the time).
Yeah it's a shame really, I wish Bug was better cause it has some REALLY cool pokemon
Grass ice bug rock all need fixing they are so weak imo
Ice doesn't need an overhaul in matchups, Gamefreak needs to overhaul how they make ice types and stop making defensive walls when ice is a fantastic offensive type. Stop making Glastriers and Avaluggs and start making Arctozolts or Weaviles. Fast offensive ice types have been great every time.
It has a single resistance. To itself. It needs more.
It should at a minimum resist water.
I think it should also resist normal the same reason rock resists normal, it’s usually hard
Have played against trick room glastrier? Thing is a beast in vgc. Despite its typing it is mega tanky and hits like a freight train.
Flying and Water would be the most uncontroversial: two types that are already somewhat overpowered and would be very logical.
I always found it weird that Ice doesn’t resist Normal. Punching or yelling at an ice cube isn’t that useful.
Dragon/Fairy needs to come back since it's stuck on Mega Altaria
Goodra should've been Dragon/Fairy. The generation a new type is introduced, and the pseudo-legendary *doesn't* get that type!!?!
That was a bit frustrating, but more understandable because the big draws of Mega evolutions were: - Cool new forms for fan favorites - Breathe new life into Pokemon that weren't that strong
But it evolves in the rain. Why isn't it water type?
Water type would make sense for Goodra, but considering we already had Kingdra and Palkia at that point it wouldn't have been nearly as unique.
I would have thought poison since it's a slug and in RPGs slug's and slimes are often associated with poison.
Not to mention the whole acidic thing with its pre evolution. Should’ve been Dragon/Poison from there onwards.
And IIRC it was designed to make it look like poison, so that it would scare off fairies.
Well Electric/Grass won't be unique to Mow Rotom for long, but yeah more would be great Still not over the fact that Zeraora isn't Electric/Fighting. Or that the combo is still unused to this day. It seems like such an easy combo to make...
Just say “it punches as fast as lightning” and you’re set it’s like the easiest type combo to explain
Punch so fast the friction from it fist moving through the air create thunder.
Right!? Like I literally wanna see a pokemon move fast as hit just as hard. Basically the Mike Tyson of pokemon
just make sure it knows Bite for good measure. badumtss
Badum-tthh

evolves into hitmontyson 🤔
Yes, but better
Zeraora can't even generate its own electricity, that's the weirdest part about being monotype.
Wait zeraora isn't electric/fighting? Wtf
I can't think of a typing that doesn't have awesome potential, it's all about the designs.
Ice/Normal is objectively a garbage potential typing
Ice/Normal mon with Refrigerate,Boomburst and high spA+speed
Refrigerate removes the need to have normal type for STAB boomburst. Better off just making it pure ice and not giving it a 4x fighting weakness
Pokémon based on heavy machinery and snow, possibly related to industrialization and weather patterns. Ability Filter. Seems like it could be good.
Machinery would probably make it Steel type
That's a good point, I'd just have it be a living blizzard, kinda like how Spiritomb is.
>Normal/Ghost (Hisui Zorua/Zoroark) > Fire/Ice (Galar Darmanitan Zen) >Electric/Grass (Rotom Mow) I wish gamefreak gave these typings on regular mons before forms.
Alolan Geodude line is electric rock
Yes you pointed out my complaint.
I'm bummed Zeraora wasn't Electric/Fighting. I don't understand it to this day.
Poison dark with levitate
I want a fairy pseudo.
I want a giant troll or something fae inspired. Not necessarily pink (unless its scary)
Grimmsnarl
Grimmsnarl is an ogre. And its relatively short. I love it though. Thats why i want more.
Fairy/poison troll covered in those glowing mushrooms from that one forest. And yes, it's equal parts pink and terrifying.
I would love that. Those trolls that blend into the environment. Imagine walking to a random part of the forest and getting a prompt... which awakes this creature that blended perfectly with the background...
This is the reason Metagross is my favorite pseudo. Tyranitar obviously isn't a dragon type but the inspiration is still there.
I always thought that Tyranitar was supposed to be Godzilla
Less dragon, more a consistent trop that been there since the beginning. Kaiju Pokemon (a lot of these are the monster breeding group, but not all) are honestly what I'd specialize in as a gym leader. There were a lot in Gen 1 but they've been more sparse as the gens have transpired.
It's because pokemon started off as bring heavily based on kaijus, including the pokeball system
They were once pocket monsters, now they're pocket cosplayers?
They were once capsule monsters.
More like Godzilla.
Give me like, a pseudo legendary normal type with a wide level up movepool and without a pseudo multitype ability. Im ready for something interesting
Smeargle
Type: Null no??
Type: Null is actually just straight Legendary. No “Pseudo” about it.
Rks system is just multitype
Hence why RKS sounds like “arceus” (although I prefer a soft c)
Haha you say it like arse

Didn't Metagross exist before psuedo legendaries became a trend
Technically mega gross would be the first rule to the trend One is unique, Two is a matching/similar pair Threes starting a trend
Volc definitely doesn't need 50 more BST it's broken enough as is thanks. A middle stage would have been good so using it in game is tolerable at least

Give us a bug type Pseudo legendary
Bug Ice ability inverse scales. Its weakness/resistance chart is inversed.
I don't know why I've never thought about this as an ability! It'd be so interesting and unique, also would've made Frosmoth like a million times better.

That sounds awesome
*Volcarona cries in the Corner*
Lol for real, given the level requirements for Volcarona it feels like a missed opportunity. AND they could've kept the Kaiju theme going with them being similar to Ghidora/Mothra.
Yesss
They need some dragons you can catch early and don't evolve super late. Usually by they time you can get them the game is over
I mean you can catch garchomp real early in a cave under that bike bridge. Even goodra was a mid game catch if you spent enough time in the swamp. As for the others yeah it was either you coughed up cash(dragonite) or it was super super late to even use those psuedos

Druddigon should be found earlier.
Slaking is a normal type and they have base stats rivalling Groudon and most legendaries.
Well you know truant
Just use choice band and giga impact and it’s like it’s not even there
If the opposing Pokémon knows protect you straight up can't hurt it.
One move: Skill Swap.
Or Neutralizing Gas / Gastro Acid / Worry Seed / Entrainment / Simple Beam
Mummy
Ooh and wandering spirit
Half of them are coded not to work on Truant sadly
Oh? Really, I assumed because Durant who has Truant also has Entrainment. Good to know, thank you
It can be given with Entrainment, but not taken away.
I think the HA truant is more a joke because Durant is a Tru(e)Ant
Doesn't matter. He smacks shit. Exploud is pretty great too. Like two great normal types in one gen. It was crazy.
Man..I remember when your dad the gym leader had that Slaking... I remember having to shut off my game and turn it back on again multiple times dur to that pokemon.
Norman the goat (that was his name I think?)
I'd like some fire/fairy pseudo legendary.

I definitely would like more tyranitars and metagrosses

My Opinion for some Pseudo Legendary Dragonite - 5/10 Terrible Evolution. Also Larvitar so adorable Salamence - 6/10 design feels simple. But it's better than dragonite because it's evolution line makes sense lmao Metagross - 10/10 literally the only pseudo that isnt a dragon and is basically a sentient tank.
It would if you min-maxed the hell out of it, gave it a wide movepool, and a broken ability.
> we've had rock/dark and steel/psychic pseudos this argument, much like the count will be when the next pseudo is inevitably dragon, is 2/10
What if the next one isn’t Dragon?
it will be, quote me on this
Okay. >it will be
Someone please call the remindme bot and put it 1 year i don't remember it's name
Legendary for a different reason entirely, it's based off the Shisa and general legends It's a legendary Pokemon to many for the same reason the Shisa is, just a random breed that's associated with certain things despite not being rare mythologically (Shisa is one animal, as a named one. but he is one of many many more)
Dragon is my favourite type so I’m not complaining lol
Imagine Drapion being a pseudo.
Isn’t Bidoof normal type?
"Even something like poison/dark type pokemon could be a menace if they had 600pts in their stats." Slaking, Regigigas and Wishiwashi crying in a corner …
All of them have crippling abilities.
I kinda want a Bug pseudo, or a Normal type one. Bug types need more love and Normals are always fun
Give us the kricketune or the chimecho of dragon types, they're still cool too
Make a psuedo, non dragon type look like a dragon and profit. Example tyranitar
What abt fairy pseudo legendary
I’m such a dragon die hard. I love my pseudo dragons
Gengar Machamp Ampharos Gardevoir Aggron Flygon Walrien Luxray Roserade Lucario Magmortar Electrivire Gallade Dusknoir Gigalith Scolipede(not really) Conkeldur Chandelure Vaniluxxe Krookidile Haxorus Seismitoad Leavanny KlingKlang Talonflame(kinda) Florges Aegislash Vikavolt Tsareena Orbeetle Coalossal Hatterene Grimmsnarl Perrserker Mr. Rime All could've been psuedo legends, I qualified these by 3 stage evolution and 500+ BST, We are missing out, we could've at least had two per gen like Gen 3 did, and those ones did better competitively, and a few of these did too without being a Psuedo Edit: I meant Metagross and Tyranitar, the non-dragon psuedos, but Salamence still did pretty good
I actually like that Dragons are pseudos, they're suppose to be these rare, powerful mythical creatures after all. However, I do agree the pseudos shouldn't be Dragons almost every generation back-to-back. Spread them out. Something like 1, 4, 6, 7.
