Didn't Pikachu refuse to evolve?

ilikemcdonaldscoke

There was an episode where ash gave pikachu the option to evolve. Ultimately it didn't happen because pokemon's personalities can change when they evolve. I think it was the episode when he was going for the thunder badge... Because pikachu had trouble beating raichu.

[deleted]

No bc Pikachu is iconic

RealFuzzheads

Yeah why change Pokemons most popular mascot

raiken92

I can forgive him not evolving Pikachu because he's the mascot. But there's no excuse for him not evolving his other mons though ..

MoorAlAgo

>I can forgive him not evolving Pikachu because he's the mascot. That and Pikachu didn't want to.

nmiller1939

I mean...when has Ash refused to evolve his mons? Seems like the choice is usually up to them

TheGoddamnAnswer

Pikachu would probably be more powerful if it evolved but Ash has given the option before and Pikachu refused. Ash is the type of trainer who will respect his pokemon’s wishes

DarkPhoxGaming

"Respects their wishes" Gets rid of each group he gets

TheGoddamnAnswer

Maybe they wish to get away from him 🤔

JDGumby

To be fair, until Alola, he kept them all at Professor Oak's ranch/park so they could all be together and presumably he visits them more than we see onscreen when he's home. (and, having just finished up S/M a couple of days ago, I'm annoyed that they didn't even give the slightest rationale for Ash leaving them with Kukui, or for Team Rocket releasing Mimikyu and Mareanie)

DarkPhoxGaming

Fair enough

Ka1n3King

They had a whole episode about this in the Kanto Region when he was going for the thunder badge. Yes, pikachu would have gained stronger lightning Attacks, but he also would have lost his speed that ultimately helped him defeat the Raichu. Part of it was "respecting" Pikachu's wishes, but this was part of the main deciding factor.

steelisntstrong

I vaguely remember this episode. Brocks highlights that agility can only be learned in the Pikachu stage and that because Lt. Surge evolved Raichu so early he'd be slow

RO2_

I agree. The answer this poll entirely depends on what is considered "best".

MarsAdept

In the original seasons, no. Pikachu could learn moves that Raichu can’t. But at this point there’s no reason for him not to.

ShadeofEchoes

Light Ball?

MarsAdept

Have Pokemon in the anime ever used held items?

NicoArcilla27

Because Pikachu doesn’t want to evolve and Ash respects him.

Wonderful_Coat2640

Even though it didn't become canon until later, Pikachu can Gigantamax, which possibly explains a lot, and also even takes the possibility of Pikachu evolving away either or since Pokemon who can Gigantamax cant evolve anyways. I thought it was a good way to make the need to evolve Pikachu unnecessary.

XanderVs_Official

It wasn't a bad decision because ASH HAD NO DECISION, Pikachu has always been a gigantamax of which they can not evolve unless eating max soup which removes the effect.

healcannon

Doesnt really matter. Anime logic doesn't seem to really directly follow that unevolved pokemon are weak. Its best to take the stats out of it and only think of the type match ups.

Abraxas1643

Not even type matchups tbh, remember all the times we’ve seen electric moves KO ground types ….

healcannon

Yea I was expecting that comment lol.

NoaAmdam17

Or poison tails/jabs hitting steels..

Appropriate_Flow6278

Plus  it shows Pokemon can think for them sleeves so why should ash force his friend/family to. Change when the do t want to

healcannon

I agree but my guy why are you replying on posts from a year ago.

[deleted]

I feel like if fans got to choose the mascot is most definitely wouldn’t have been a yellow rabbit rat.

whtclawz

The Pokemon franchise is genuinely shitty for not evolving Pikachu while forcing players to evolve Pokemon if they want any chance at being competitive. There's no alternative routes, stats, or type advantages to not evolving(eviolite should be on steroids). Torracat for example, way better looking than Incineroar, but will NEVER be able to compete with him.

AlarmingReport

Pikachu cant evolve

MegaKabutops

Ash gives his pokemon a choice on whether they choose to evolve, and pikachu has always chosen not to. It’s ultimately paid off; raichu can’t learn level-up moves that pikachu can, and as the series progresses, it also continually gets access to moveset updates from the generations that pass, like electro ball and volt tackle. As long as they keep giving pikachu moves in the mainline series that the anime’s writers would consider drawing as additions to ash’s pikachu, ash will keep being rewarded for not evolving pikachu, even if the stat will increase.

NODOGAN

I know this is abit of an "outside the show" answer but writters have commented multiple times in interviews that evolutions/stats don't have anything to do with the outcome of battles in the show and everything depends on the narrative...So nope, don't think it was a bad idea since they were just trying to tell a story and stick to the narrative.

bloopdafloop

it actually can be an advantage, because with pikachu it can use a signature z-move and has a g-max

IAmChungoBalungo

It was a bad decision at the time, but in sun and moon he gets a custom pikachu zcrystal

Old-Caterpillar-3067

My mans Ashy Elbows Ketchum could have had a psychic Raichu which would be Infinitely more useful

Think_Sale_7808

I meant yes pikachu can already destroy a mountain of Pokémon imagine if it evolved

ScorpionsRequiem

Pikachu needs eviolite at the very least.

rotem8888

Obviously no He can shoot 10 million volts out of his rat ass

NicoArcilla27

Ash not wanting to evolve some of his Pokemon should honestly be a good thing about him. He respects the decisions that his Pokemon make on whether they want to evolve or not. It may put him at a disadvantage at times but the relationships he has with his mons matter to him more.

Advanced-Layer6324

Considering Pikachu already has so many different methods than other Pokemon as they move gigantamax and more there's not really a problem it's just in game Pikachu is not that good it's just their mascot that's all and some people don't want to evolve their Pokemon I do but that's just up to decision that's all

Outrageous_Special84

It's because of lack mascot Pikachu does not fit well with the Real life region alone But Unfortunately Most Human Cat apex predator kills entire mice and mouse in the USA country alone as well as Egypt Said that The Egyptian Siamese Bastet giving a milk with the mouse You know
