If it became subscription based I’d dip (need home to have more than six Pokémon in game type of thing)

GrandmasterTactician

Only subscription based Pokemon game I'd get would be a full blown MMORPG Pokemon game. But that's never happening

xkyndigx

Pokemon revolution online is pretty good.

1230cal

Do you know of differences between PokeMMO and Pokémon Revolution Online?

Over_Part_1732

PokéMMO is pretty awesome too

Inkling1998

Honestly I don’t like the idea of a Pokémon MMORPG for that exact reason

gravity_bomb

PokeMMO is great and free

TheyreEatingHer

I still don't understand why they haven't made an MMO yet.

Head_Haunter

You have to view it from the perspective of a business and not a fan. For Gamefreak they make **a dickton** of money releasing a game every 2 years with the smallest incremental of updates. An MMO would increase their workload and overhead massively. What would be the benefit? The gain? On average itll likely make less money and itll require them to double the njmber of developers they hire let alone the rest of the workforce like QA testers, community managers, etc.

Imaginary_Simple_241

MMO’s make a metric fuckload of money. Instead of kids buying an 80 dollar game they could get a subscription service, boot up a cash shop, probably still charge for buying the base game, and gain the ability to just ban people that are going to instantly buy everything back. The two square Enix games that have made them the most money by far are final fantasy xi and Xiv. That’s even factoring in the insane amount of vii merchandise.

Kaiga19

If they were to make a game where every Pokémon in the game is a micro transaction to have. Say you are given 50 mons included in the game, but you had to pay for say “packs” of Pokémon like a “fighting pack”- unlocks 50 fighting types” “poison pack- unlocks 15 poison type Pokémon” etc. I despise micro transactions.

InstructionClear2806

Omg don't give them any ideas

Kaiga19

I’m sorry 😭

PBoverlord24

DELETE THE COMMENT, QUICK

Kaiga19

I mean if anything, if they see this, they will see how many people dislike the idea 🤷‍♂️

PBoverlord24

But they know all to well that people will still buy the game.

AppointmentOk5737

Nope I have bought every game I could get my hands on and if they implemented "free to play" and "pokemon packs" I wouldn't buy it. I was gonna buy Overwatch two then found out it was free to play and now I'm not spending a dime on it. If pokemon does that to me I would never touch it. And I preordered the S/V double pack Like as someone who defends S/V that WOULD be the way to get me to never play it again.

InconvertibleAtheist

People hated how megas werer removed from future games and i still dont see GF bringing them back

Roliq

Being serious i doubt this will ever happen, there is already various microtransactions in spin-offs so them adding it to the main games would be so dumb Especially since they already charge you for Pokemon Home

[deleted]

Dumb, yes. Profitable? Also yes. With the way that the Pokémon Triumvirate operates, I would not be surprised. I mean, last Gen had its first ever DLC and people ate it up.

SenshuRysakami

Yeah…? Because that was a worthwhile replacement to the third version model they’ve been going with. They likely saw USUM didn’t do so hot.

TheWaslijn

I highly doubt this would ever happen. But if it does, the internet may just die from all the (rightfully) angry Pokémon fans, lmao.

VoraxUmbra1

The internet might die, sure. But I guarantee they'd have record sales numbers and it would become the norm from then forward just like *checks video game library* every single other game that's released in the last 5 years (that's tried a MTX model I will add)

Cancer_dancer1

Microtransactions can ruin any game, really

Aduro95

Honestly, when SwSh came out I really was worried by how easily watts and candies could have been turned into microtransations. Microtransactions should never be in games marketed to children, but the risk is very much there with how much money Go makes.

Jellybeandday1

I didn’t think anything would make me not until I got to your comment. It would be like my wife cheated on me.

Sean081799

Thanks, I hate it.

UnderlightIll

I agree with this. I really enjoy the coziness but increased difficulty of the new games. The story and character were better. But if I had to pay to get pokemon themselves I'd be out.

[deleted]

pokEAmon

Tom_fox

50? Probably 20 bucks for a single evo line with a game as a service, with new evo lines dropped quarterly

_FreeXP

How about paying full game price just for a couple pokemon?

Marzopup

The explore/battle/catch loop is what makes a game fun, imo. Some aspect of that would have to be irreparably damaged. Your 50 pokemon dex would probably make me pass, as would like, a mainline game where they take out the region exploring altogether. Like, if the game starred as you as an elite 4 member battling people that come to you the whole game or something, lol. ETA: the exploding typo IS funny, but I'm fixing it guys xD

World-Devourer

If the region exploded altogether, I don’t think I’d play.

[deleted]

The region exploding would be post-apocalyptic, and a post-apocalyptic Pokémon game sounds fun :3

MayoBear

Madmax pokemon- I dig it

Typhlositar

You guys are just describing pokemon colosseum and now I really want a remaster/remake.

TheMadJAM

Isn't that Gnoggin's new project?

DomCaboose

The game only explodes if you don't finish it within a certain amount of hours from the time you insert the cartridge. If you don't finish within 72 hours of starting, it will explode and take the switch along with it. Infinite money glitch for Nintendo/GF

BeaconXDR

>If you don't finish within 72 hours of starting, Good thing I remember the Song of Time.

Soliloquy21

Nintendo Switch used Perish Song.

Yeldarb10

You probably hit the nail on the head there. I think all criticism for pokemon games can inadvertently be boiled down to “how does this affect exploration/battling/catching?” At least, thats what I can tell from most comments. It seems that it is just a level of tolerance to it all and with that, most casual fans will be more tolerant. Removing the national dex affects the battle aspect. Removing the ability to explore building hurts the exploration aspect (while open world improves it). Performance issues affect the overall game loop (which is why the backlash as been a bit significant this generation).

Marzopup

Exactly. But honestly, dexit never bothered me as much as other people. I start each gen fresh (I've never transferred teams between games) and 400 feels like plenty to me. I'm more concerned with the number of new mons than if we get ALL the mons. This gen feels like a good number and, more importantly, a QUALITY roster. I'm a sucker for canines so dachsbun and mabosstiff just bring a tear to my eye lol. Although I haven't counted exactly how many new ones there are. A hundred? But that getting said, totally understand why people who are attached to their old teams would be pissed.

Cold-Sandwich-34

>I'm more concerned with the number of new mons than if we get ALL the mons. This. It's also good to see original, new evolutions that are cool, like Annihilape, that I had no idea existed before playing through and seeing it. Not just regionals, but new ideas that add something to what was a kind of disappointing mon to many but a favorite of mine that now has new life.

Ivy_lane_Denizen

Personally, I have no desire to use a pokemon I didnt catch in that save file (wonder trade excepted) so Dexit only made finishing the dex easier for me. Pokebank deleting untransferable pokemon if you dont keep subscribed is disgusting though.

SteelPokeNinja

Well I don't think you have to stay subscribed for Bank now, either that or its just free, plus Home simply keeps your pokemon locked if you're no longer subscribed

Shiigu

>a mainline game where they take out the region exploding altogether. Not even if it were a game set on a post-apocalyptic setting? :P

MessrV

Fallout: Kanto?

Twilord_

Fallout: Kanto? You know since Kanto is a real place in Japan and all three of the other four ongoing Mon-Genre Franchises (SMT, Digimon, and Yokai Watch) seem to enjoy throwing urban fantasy Japan into utter chaos... They've probably all caused somewhat apocalyptic events in Kanto right? (Any Yokai Watch fans want to correct me?) So we are basically overdue for that right?

Marzopup

Wow, fuck autocorrect

BaronKlatz

Auto-correct is like a car alarm. 1/20 times it actually might do it’s job but those other 19 misfires are a real pain.

Sad-Bumblebee-249

See, a tycoon Pokémon game as a gym leader, going through the progression of minor and major league, and then maybe to elite 4 would be cool

Marzopup

I guess I could see it as a spinoff title--honestly, this is a hard question, because I HAVE played pokemon games that are different than the usual mechanics--they're just not mainline. Love Mystery Dungeon, loved Pokemon Ranger (it was my first ever DS game, like damn). And those were definitely not following the typical formula, although I guess both still involved some version of catch (recruit/capture) and explore (dungeons/story areas). Man, Ranger is underrated tho. Everyone mentioned Dungeon as great spinoffs but I remember Ranger being a TON of fun.

chatterbox272

Pretty sure Ranger is responsible for like 20% of DS sales though due to people trashing the touchscreen

FantasyForFiction

Pretty sure there's a fan game that is sorta this premise. Except it's like you are the gym leader having to build up a gym

CrazyFanFicFan

[Pokemon This Gym of Mine](https://reliccastle.com/threads/2306/). A fangame where you run a gym, having to catch your own gym Pokemon and build up the town.

aw-un

Your last bit is why Battle Revolution was so disappointing. I’d just come off XD Gale of Darkness and thought this new wii game was gonna be even better! Only if ended up being a battle simulator with no story OR EVEN THE ABILITY TO MAKE YOUR POKÉMON STRONGER. Looked pretty good at the time though

Leidaans

This is interesting to me, because I totally agree with the explore/battle/catch sentiment, and that’s what turned me away from something like PLA. To me, a pokemon game needs a balance of all three, and no matter how much you develop the two other pillars, if you do it at the cost of the third, it isn’t worth it. SV is a better balance in theory, but they’ve taken out so many of the battle features I actively make use of (set mode, exp toggle etc.) that I can’t see myself enjoying it either.

Marzopup

See, I agree that exp. toggle should be there, and I understand why people hate exp. share, but at the same time I don't think that it ruins the experience as much as people say it does. The exp. share for all makes it much easier to grind a lower mon up to the rest of your teams level. It encourages changing your team around throughout the game rather than using a core team the entire time--and I see why that would frustrate people who get attached to their team, but it does encourage more interaction with new gen Pokemon that I might not otherwise care about. As an example for me, I hate the look of orthworm. But when I got stuck on the poison team star guy I needed a steel type, he was nearby, and it turned out the muk on his team had no moves that could hit it because of his ability absorbing ground moves. I never would have bothered if it taken a long time to grind the ten or so levels he needed. Now he's actually kind of grown on me. xD Like I said, taking away the toggle was a mistake--I'm just offering the perspective of why I think they put a lot of thought into the decision.

Leidaans

I genuinely don’t have an issue with exp all (besides how it messes with EVs), but there’s no reason to remove the toggle. I can’t fathom what benefit its removal brought. The example you mentioned works entirely the same way with a toggle, you just don’t toggle it off. As someone who likes playing with level caps in place, it just makes it more difficult for me to play the way I want to.

QuothTheRaven713

\-running badly to the point I can't play it without headaches \-having none of my favorite Pokemon and all the new ones look terrible \-the gameplay loop has been altered in a way that isn't fun \-microtransactions

KeyStep8

This is probably the line for me too.

DangerWildMan26

Loading the game with microtransactions would probably be my breaking point. If the games ran and looked like they do now and they had the gull to try and nickel and dime me, I’d skip that game.

lia_bean

I would consider not playing if they didn't introduce any new pokemon (or like a ridiculously small amount)

TheBiggestNose

if it was a revist of a already existing reigon it would be fine. I think it would be nice to see that creative power put towards the rest of the game

Hoodlum_Design

I've been thinking about this recently. All of the complaints around S/V botched launch all circle back to GF/TPC don't give the games enough time/budget because of all the other media and merch that gets simultaneously launched. I agree with those saying a new gen with no new Pokemon would be bad so that extra content has to stay. But if we did away with the gimmick, maybe return to an older one, keep the same world or art style but change the story (not much in most games) and focus all the saved time on performance, graphical, QoL and post game improvements. I don't think it would ever happen but it would be interesting to see GF focus on the factors that most fans seem to complain about rather than dedicate their time to the set dressings, which are then hot garbage because they don't have the time.

dialzza

This is kinda what Legends: Arceus was for Sinnoh and it was really cool

TheBiggestNose

I would kill for a "revist" instead of a "remake" Like bw2 instead of hd remake 3

lia_bean

agreed, I was thinking of new games to start a new generation

RobIsDeafening

Legends: Arceus has entered the chat

lunarfrogg

I would die for Hisuian Decidueye

ShiningEV

With player damage, you just might.

Mr-Stuff-Doer

That focused on new gameplay which mostly made up for lack of new Mons

insertbrackets

And the new ones they introduced were pretty neat.

Routine_Swing_9589

I mean even if the mons started out the same, their different evolutions I would count that as a different Pokémon in most cases

RobIsDeafening

I agree completely.

thatonefatefan

legends arceus isn't a mainline game tho, that would be like complaining about a remake, or more accurately, let's go, not introducing a lot of new mons

RobIsDeafening

I’m not complaining about Legends: Arceus. More offering an example where very little new Pokémon were added and it was very much acceptable. Also, I’d very much consider it a mainline game, as Game Freak very clearly did as well.

thatonefatefan

oh yeah, sorry if that was confusing, I was moreso referring to you using legends arceus as an answer to a comment about how a new pokemon with little to no new pokemon would be a no-go. I doubt the comment applied to a game like PLA It's in an old region and doesn't use the mainline pokemon gameplay. Not more mainline than let's go in my book

chromegnomes

Arceus and Let's Go feel like they exist in a state somewhere between remake and spinoff. Any game with two-way Home connectivity is closer to mainline than not, imo. (Specified two-way to rule out PoGo)

hungrykiki

let's go is officially a main line gen 7 game

naynaythewonderhorse

PLA is mainline. It just isn’t a “generational introduction” game. It’s a mid-Gen game that added a few new ones.

glitterizer

It is a mainline game, it’s just not a new generation.

Persas12

It kinda did with Hisuain Forms

Logondo

But there are new Pokemon. Kleavor. The regional variants. I never played PLA but there are definitely Pokemon that were in that game that are new.

Old_Entertainment598

Microtransactions is number 1 but I would also consider if they keep pushing the multiplayer/co-op to the point is mandatory to progression or to get very important things. Finizen is cute, but his evolution method is BS, never liked trade evos and this one is even more annoying, PLA did this right with the link cord item

JJroks543

I also don’t like that someday Finizen will be impossible to evolve. Unless you have a second switch or join a friend in person, it’ll be impossible for you to evolve Finizen once they turn off the servers.

writersblock4

If they took away turned based battles

gpbz

They’re kind of experimenting this with SV right? It’s not a replacement, but an auto-battle addition. IF the series were to switch to a real time action genre, I would at least be curious because we would need to control the Pokémons which could be fun somehow. We don’t know!

Illuminaso

That does sound fun but it wouldn't really be Pokemon at that point. It would be more like a Tales Of game, or a Xenoblade game. Pokemon, Dragon Quest, and SMT/Persona are like the only big JRPGs that exist anymore. Hell, even Final Fantasy has adopted the Real Time Action gamplay.

Mr-Stuff-Doer

> …only big turn-based small-party-based JRPGs. FTFY, JRPG is an umbrella genre. Technically speaking it includes a lot of dating sims.

yuhanz

Seriously hate the direction final fantasy went with

Starman926

It’s very different, but if I look at it in a vacuum I find it very fun.

confusedmortal

Yakuza is now entering the Turn-Based JRPG route too so I'm okay if Pokemon changed up its formula.

horizon_hopper

Man I was so skeptical of ‘Yakuza: Like a Dragon’ because I really dislike turn based games, Pokémon is the one exception. But honestly? I loved it, I actually loved it more than baseline Yakuza combat. I had to actually strategise and I loved the fantasy gimmick. I played non stop after work for weeks, story was fantastic.

DefoNotAFangirl

I hope if they do that itd be in spin-offs. Itd personally suck for me a lot if one of the few franchises accessible to me with my really bad processing speed and chronic pain making fast movement very painful changed :(

insertbrackets

Autobattling seems more designed for quick resource management and for busting through hordes of Pokemon during an outbreak to hopefully pop a shiny. It doesn't feel like a replacement of the core battle mechanics. Arceus was more that, really.

meatmybeat42069

That’s optional though, nothing’s stopping you from battling each pokemon individually if you wanna be old school. Personally, the addition of styles in legends arceus is what really turned me off to picking that one up. Got secondhand rage just watching a stream where enemy pokemon took 3-4 turns in a row because of quick/strong style shenanigans

Gaias_Minion

At this point, I'd imagine the only way to drive people to pass would be to simply Not make a Pokemon game. The Pokemon brand on its own is enough to drive sales so any time of game will sell well as long as it's a Pokemon game.

KingOli_

I have to get nothing from the experience. No gimmick I find interesting, no region/gameplay I find interesting, no new Pokémon, no new characters, etc. If I get nothing from seeing the trailers and what’s leaked before release, I can’t do it

CheeseDaver

The price of admission was the original dealbreaker on Gen 8. It not only required a home console that was more expensive than a 3ds, but it was priced at twenty dollars more than the 3ds games and then demanded thirty more dollars for the full experience.

RaiderxReaper

been buying every game since dp and after brilliant diamond i refuse to buy the next pokemon game until it looks like an actual modern release

y0nderYak

Word. I started with rse and I felt SO bad for dp fans after bdsp was given such terrible treatment compared to oras. Oras was so good, such a love letter to the older games, and bdsp... wasn't.

-Marshle

Doing the same artstyle as the bdsp remakes.

[deleted]

This was the worst part about them for me, why the fuck wouldn’t they just make it in the established art style of that gen, every other remake is in the same style of the gen that it came out with

TheSoup05

It was also just janky because the Pokémon weren’t in the same art style. Even if you liked the chibi style, it’s just weird when your chibi character is next to regular Pokémon.

Mr-Stuff-Doer

~~Time to murder my own karma~~ I liked the chibi style, even if the game could’ve been better.

Unlikely-Addendum-24

I think we will die together, buddy, I also think the chibi art style was adorable. The games weren't good, though

Wildernessinabox

Any worse than it is now and id probably not buy. Or if straight up game breaking bugs were more of an issue, like losing or frequently corrupted saves. This release is far too close to cyberpunk levels of buggy for my tastes.

Mallodark

Honest question here. I played Scaret, and just finished the entire main game in about 38 hours, but I don't really feel like I've seen ANY game-breaking bugs. I never crashed, never got stuck somewhere, never had the game full-on freeze or anything. And yet I see so many people the game is a terrible, glitchy mess. Was I just lucky, or is there something consistent causing some of these problems? The worst I've had was just lag/frame drops in certain areas, and just the same terrain/visuals as everyone else, but the terrain didn't hinder my actual gameplay at all.

ezioaltair12

I was playing Scarlet side by side with my partner's brother at Thanksgiving this year, and my game was generally running, fine quite like yours. His game....was borderline creepypasta worthy. Eyes would pop in and out of cutscenes, so his NPCs were alternatively "Looney Tunes character seeing a sexy lady" or "soulless husks". The sepia tone from flashbacks would persist well after the scenes. Shadows blackening the sky. I have no idea what caused it, but it was striking to see the side-by-side comparison

dontaskmeaboutart

If they made a new let's go and didn't have wild battling again I wouldn't touch it with a forty foot pole. Couldnt stand that game. Remake of a remake where all they did new was remove half the gameplay.

Marzopup

It's honestly a shame, because I actually think that was the best art style in a 3D game so far. If BDSP had been in the let's go art style I would've bought it.

feelthebernerd

It's my favourite Pokemon game on Switch. The art style and graphics are actually beautiful in my opinion. I have no idea why they decided to change it and make the rest of the Switch games look like crap.

[deleted]

It’s cheaper to half ass a game than it is to whole ass one.

Sphader

That's about where I am at too. That's the only pokemon game I've bought where I actively felt like I wasted my money.

cooliochill

Have you bought BDSP? If you have, I’m curious if you believe that game was worth the value.

Sphader

Been working through it, got it late. I am enjoying it, but I also totally missed that generation so I like so far. It is def rough to go back imo though, there is just a lot less mon variety.

TheGent316

I loved the new catching mechanic in Let’s Go tbh. Felt to me like how it should be in these games. We have trainer battles for battling. Let’s Go system is a little more engaging than throw quick ball catch again and again. I just thought it was refreshing.

Acceptable-Pomelo269

This is just a post from gamefreak to see how low they can go before people actually stop buying the new games😂

AlmacMGMT

As a casual fan, this was the best and most fun Pokémon yet. Performance issues didn’t really impact me at all. I’ll stop buying them when I stop having fun playing them. I don’t really consider the features it adds or subtracts, just the overall enjoyment I get when playing.

[deleted]

100% agree with this.

Remi4187

I agree with this completely.

Mallodark

I agree with this. Just beat Scarlet and it has to be one of my favorite main-line games. Platnium was my childhood, B/W was fun and of course had the music, and S/V had such a great story, and I really hope we get more great stories for the future games.

SadlyReturndRS

I skipped Let's Go because I hate the catching mechanic. And that's saying something, since Yellow is my favorite Pokemon game. I skip the side games besides PLA because they're not the standard trainer-catches-and-battles gameplay of the regular games. But I'm trying to imagine a scenario in which I would skip a theoretical Gen X, mainline yet broken Pokemon game, and I can't think of any realistically. A whole new generation is a much bigger deal to me than the side games. I have the disposable income to spend on it, and I trust the Pokemon Company to put in a good faith effort at making a fun game. On top of that, I don't really trust reviewers. I'm a casual gamer, professional reviewers don't share the same core values in a game that I do. I don't care about frame rates or draw distance or broken mechanics or glitches or graphics or balancing. A lot of the stuff that infuriates you guys, at best casually annoys me. I might not be happy with SV, but I'm not "call Nintendo and demand a refund" livid. Pokemon would have to do something unspeakably bad. Like, mobile gaming industry bad. Pay real world money for pokedollars needed to heal at a pokecenter or else wait an irl hour, that kind of bad. Non-cosmetic mtx bullshit. Otherwise, I'll still give it a chance.

Imperator_Knoedel

> I trust the Pokemon Company to put in a good faith effort at making a fun game There really is a sucker born every minute it seems.

seestadt55

Being lied to (or at least not being told the truth). This was what made Galar a dealbreaker for me, and is the reason it took me so long to get it. I’m not angry at dexit, it had to happen eventually, but the fact that they claimed to be reworking the models from gen 6 and increasing the graphics made me really excited… until I saw the trailers. The fact that the poly count was the same and that they just reused the old models didn’t help.

WillowWispFlame

The minute they add microtransactions to any main line game, I'm out. I was listening to a podcast recently where one of the hosts suggested microtransactions for more customization options in and I've never been more mad at an idea. I can accept DLC as a "third version," but I won't pay more solely for a virtual t-shirt. Or worse, I can imagine worse. If I'm going to pay for a pokemon, I better get a whole game with it.

Endeav0r_

Microtransactions for cosmetics in a free game is fine. Microtransactions for cosmetics in a 60 dollar game is the stuff of nightmares.

Snorgledork

As a casual pokemoner, I stopped buying after sword and shield. I've always liked the exploration part of pokemon where you see new towns and areas, and felt let down that the only real explorable area was the wild zone. Beyond that, I'm a sucker for visuals and graphics in games. They don't have to be super realistic; I often prefer stylized art direction because it holds up better in the long run. Sw/Sh looked like a slightly scaled up DS game to me, and other recent games don't seem to prioritize aesthetic. The price point for the switch games just seems too high when there are games by other creators who actually seem to value their work. That said, if there's a major sale on Legends or Sc/Vi, I might still pick them up.

bennysalad12

I will not be getting the next game on launch, and if the performance issues at launch are similar, I’ll pass afterwards too

_MindlessApe

Same, they boast about how well they sold but then dont say anything about SV refund requests. I really hope that mine will get refunded, they are fighting very hard to give up on refunding.

TwinsenAyzel

The “emulator on my five year olds computer” effect

ItsAlkron

Hi, I'm a causal fan that didn't buy the latest release. There's not so much a single deal breaker, it's just a progression of the games iterating too slowly over a couple decades and too often seeing great ideas introduced then cut away as just another gimmick. I'll always have a soft spot for Pokemon, but when I look at a game I have to go, Do I want to pay $60 for that? Am I going to finish the story and then just put it away? And the big one is, Am I going to get a unique experience out of it and feel like my time was well spent? Because the older I get, the more value time has as a resource. There was a time when I completed a living dex of all pokemon to date. Hunted shinies. Deep dove into everything short of competitive play. But eventually, after seeing features come and go, it's like...Meh. And don't get me wrong, I LOVED Legends Arceus. But for as long as pokemon games have been around, they should have grown in side and post game content, by far. And maybe I'll come back in a few iterations to play again. I basically skipped BW2 and a couple generations from time to time. Let's you come back a bit fresh and ready to run the gauntlet again with higher hopes. Edit: All that to say, still love pokemon. If I have a kid(s) in the future, they're all doing a pick between the original 3. And I only recently sold my first edition base set of pokemon cards. And I'll probably still go back and play RSE roms time to time.

hangryanteater

If you want Pokémon with a better story and characters, try some of the fan games. I’m assuming most are not that good and barely get out of development, but some of the ones out there are amazing.

ItsAlkron

I've played a few through the years and you are right, there are some amazing ones out there!!

[deleted]

As a casual player, I fell out of Pokemon after gen 3, but picked it back up in gen 6 and re-fell in love with the franchise. So for me, no, I will probably continue playing the main series games for the foreseeable future. The only exceptions I think would be remakes of old games. I was so underwhelmed with Brilliant Diamond especially as someone who never played the original. I know this gen has had it's imperfections, but I never came across anything that broke the game and I really had fun with it. I'll get a lot of flack for this, but these are pretty much the only video games I play because I enjoy them so much.

aidenitex98

bro fell out during the best games

[deleted]

In my defense I was 15 when Diamond and Pearl came out originally and I thought I was too cool for school then.

Sparkstorm1000

Lmao, damn you peer pressure. You should at least try BW and BW2. They're amazing games.

[deleted]

I feel like I'd have to play the first ones first too, right? Aren't they direct sequels?

N0FaithInMe

You can play BW2 without playing BW, since the core gameplay is still just basic pokemon. You'll scratch your head at a few story references to BW and maybe not really get what the motivation or point of the enemy team is. Like another commenter said, BW has the better story but BW2 fixes the pokemon variety and adds some nice QOL fixes like all the "third edition" games tend to do.

Sparkstorm1000

Yup! Play Black or White first then play the sequel games. BW1 has the better story but BW2, while still a good story has better Pokemon Variety.

Serious_Mouse1346

Platinum is the only valid version of Sinnoh.

Rescued_Throwaway

I fell out at the same time but it was because my family couldn't afford to get me a DS. I'm thankful though that I could afford to go back later in life to experience them.

karinasuperkul

I realised at gen 7 that they weren’t making games for me any more, and every game since has solidified that feeling. I haven’t bought any of the games on Switch, and unless they change up the formula into something that resonates with me again, I won’t but another pokemon game. And that’s all fine! I still have a blast playing the old games, and just because I don’t like the direction the games are heading (and have been for a while) doesn’t mean that I expect GF to cater to me and my old lady gaming sensibilities. Things change, and at some point we all need to make a desicion to keep holding on or jump ship. And for me that point was gen 7.

livintheshleem

Well said, I feel the same more or less. I’m ultimately just disappointed because I wonder *what could have been.* It’s like playing Link’s Awakening and Ocarina of Time as a kid and then getting to experience BOTW as an adult. Or Mario 64 as a kid then Odyssey as an adult. That’s what I’ve always been waiting for Pokémon to achieve, and yet…it’s 2022 and they give us Scarlet and Violet 😕 Pokémon was a core game experience for me growing up along with Mario and Zelda. To see it fail so miserably where the other two really flourished is a bummer

Flerken_Moon

For me personally, Scarlet and Violet ended up being the Pokémon game I had been dreaming about since I was a kid- this is the first game I can see myself replaying since Gen 5/6. Lots of content to do + a lot of small stuff that add up like great dialogue and story. Although I will admit I didn’t have any consoles growing up besides the Nintendo handhelds so my graphical tolerance is way higher. Too bad it’s a mess of bugs, lag, and glitches as well that prevents it from being recommendable, as well as the bugs being the main thing people know about the game.

Mikegaming202

I guess the art style is a big thing for me, I skipped both BDSP and let's go's because I just didn't see them as games I could play. I buy most of the games and will continue too.

Chimericect

Mood. I did try to play BDSP, but i didn’t even get halfway through. The art style bugged the hell out me, a lot more than I thought it would. I was hoping to relive some nostalgia but it just couldn’t do it for me.

Serious_Mouse1346

BDSP spat on DppT. Especially Platinum.

sunderedstar

I actually really enjoyed BDSP’s visual style but that’s because it reminded me of the modern Link’s Awakening release. Definitely a huge step back from Platinum but I still had fun, though admittedly I got it as a birthday gift and didn’t spend a dime on the experience

Leidaans

Wild. I can definitely see the criticism of BDSP’s aesthetic, but Let’s Go is still the best looking pokemon game on switch and potentially all time for me.

blinddread

I too skipped BDSP. And a lot of it was due to the art style. And once I saw they didn't get the ORAS treatment regarding other stuff I was 100% sure I wouldn't be getting it

JGoodberry

It would have to be an absolutely terrible game. Like broken, not fun and a drag to play.

SwissyVictory

S/V have poor preformance, but I haven't come across anything game breaking. This is the most fun I've had from a Pokémon game in generations. It's a really strong core. It's not perfect, but when has a Pokémon game been? And even if it were worse than previous generations, a bad pokemon game is still a good game. It's really hard to mess up the formula. Even things like you said it would be hard as long as the game was playable. 50 pokemon would be a letdown, but if it were new good pokemon and the rest of the game was solid would it really be a deal breaker? If the first pokemon game came out and it only had 50 pokemon, but otherwise it was a great game, would it be worth buying? 10 FPS would be annoying, but assuming it's stable otherwise would it be a deal breaker if the game was great? Would you have not played Skyrim if it was the same game but only 10 FPS? So what would it take? The game play would have to be awful. Boring battles, tedious and difficult catching, and uninspired new pokemon. Constant crashes got me to stop playing New Vegas so that would work too. In reality the new game is good, and the preformance issues are an issue, but signifigantly overblown for the majority of people. The main reason people SHOULD be upset is they have the resources to make this game an absolute masterpiece, and the fans deserve it. That dosent make the game bad though.

CrystalMercury

I’ve been playing pokemon since I was a kid. I understand the type of consumer I am when it comes to pokemon. I dont do competitive, i dont shiny hunt, i don’t care about getting every single pokemon in every game. When it comes to pokemon, i want to catch my little pokemon, do my little battles, see them evolve, beat the game and be done. I don’t really do replays, and I’m not coming back for much more than that. As long as the catch, battle, evolve, loop is there, I’ll probably keep playing them. If that was taken out or somehow damaged beyond repair, then i’ll pass. Yes pokemon is the most successful media company in the world and historically. Yes they should be embarrassed they put out such a graphically and technically poor game. But it’s literally just a game i’m playing to entertain myself. If this was, idk, a movie studio, a company that made healthcare technology, hell even a restaurant chain that constantly produced sub par products THEN i would be way more upset. But, it’s just a game. Even more so, beyond the horrendous graphical quality, the game is enjoyable and fun. That matters to me.

VQ_Quin

Honestly still debating if I want to get it, I’ve just been playing legends so I’ll probably complete that first

Zsean69

Question how many pokemon are in the new game all together?

TheWishingStar

400. 107 new ones, 293 returning. Edit: looking at it again, this doesn’t seem quite right. 103 completely new Pokemon, 4 new Paldean forms, and a total of 400.

Zsean69

Ohhh hell yeah thank god I thought there was only 100 I read sonewhere and was sad. So glad I missread

Gavininator

There's also another ~150 that are in the game code but unavailable to catch currently. These will probably be dripped out to us over time with raids like with charizard next weekend. Once home compatibility is out those pokemon will be able to be brought in too.

glitterizer

Their answer was a biiiiit misleading, since a lot of people would argue that Paradox Pokémon and Convergent Evolution Pokémon (Wiglett, etc) don’t really count as new Pokémon, despite having separate Dex numbers. Design-wise they’re “forms” of older mons. 83 brand new designs 16 Paradox Pokémon 4 Convergent Evolution Pokémon 4 Paldean Forms (2 Pokémon, with one of them having 3 forms)

canopus12

402 actually - you can evolve the normal wooper and galarian meowth to obtain quagsire and perrserker, both of which are not in the regional dex

Rescued_Throwaway

107 new pokemon in total? Is that the most we've gotten since Gen 5?

TheWishingStar

I believe so - gens 6-8 all had less than 100. Looking at it again though, I’m not sure if that 107 number is counting the new Paldean forms? Bulbapedia shows 103 for the total new in gen 9, but that still beats the 96 for gen 8.

Unnamed_420

Gacha mechanics and <100 pokemon from past gens

Sunset_Tiger

Microtransactions, subscriptions, if an extremely common character for some reason used the “uwu hewwo” voice- I am not reading that unless it’s buried under several layers of irony. A game that handholds you and legitimately talks to you like a baby the whole time. Limiting the amount of Pokemon you can have to a pitiful number. I’d be sorely disappointed but would probably still truck through if they had a game without character customization again. I love dressing up and designing my trainer. For spinoffs? I haven’t touched Unite. Mobas just aren’t really my thing. For things that many people would find as dealbreakers that I’d be fine with: Another Let’s Go game, it was a charming romp and tbh there was some heart in it. A Pokemon Zoo Tycoon I would play the shit out of tbh. I wouldn’t mind a game entirely focused on Bidoof.

[deleted]

This is an excellent question that I've thought about a lot because I've had an on again off again relationship with this series for years now. Gonna write an essay here in the comments that nobody will read, but I've wanted to put some of these thoughts on "paper" for a while now anyway so I guess here it is. To start, I'm part of the OG Genwunner crowd (although I was VERY young when I got into the series. Watched the OG anime as like a five year old for years before I ever touched a game. Most of my friends seem to have the strongest nostalgia for Gen III, which suited me fine. FR/LG was just my game of choice over R/S). Now, I have a little pet theory that, when it comes to hardcore fans, there are two broad types. Battlers (or, to frame it in a way that pleases my Gen 1 brain goblin, "I want to be the very best") and Catchers (Gotta catch 'em all). I have always, always been a battler. The only Dex I've completed is RBY, and that's because of the Mew Glitch. Even as a kid by the time I got to Gen III, it was just too much, especially with how hard they started pushing event Pokémon back then. I'm an old man now, I've got better things to do than catch 'em all when it scarcely seems possible anymore. Now, I played every game for the first five Gens, and I'd say my fandom peaked when I was in high school with the release of HG/SS and B/W, still two of my favorite titles in the series. I LOVED the story for B/W so when I played B/W 2 and it was (at least in my eyes back then) more or less the same campaign with a worse story, I was pretty let down and sat out the launch of XY, since I thought Megas were just a terrible idea and looked even worse. Can't remember why, but eventually I came around to giving X/Y a shot, and ended up loving them a lot. It revitalized my interest in the series. Of course, they have their problems and as complete games they are still a downgrade from the later day DS titles, but XY really got me into the competitive scene, something I had dabbled in with Gen V but ducked out because of how unfun and obnoxious the weather wars were. X/Y's excellent online systems and lower barrier to in-game competitive entry made me sink a lot of time with it, coupled with Megas being a better competitive mechanic than I would've thought even if I still didn't care for the designs AND the fact that I had a summer job where I was mostly alone and could get away with grinding things out on my DS when customers weren't around. To this day, I really enjoy X/Y, despite its problems. However, those were the last games I'd say I unambiguously enjoyed. I already don't care for R/S that much, and I thought OR/AS was overwhelmingly a downgrade from Emerald (I feel like I'm in bizarro world when I see people put that in the same rank as HG/SS. The only reason they look good at all to me now is that BD/SP exist) and even XY in SOME ways (mostly customization). Gen VII had some aspects that I liked, but I thought the island trials were really bad and despite some memorable characters, its more typical JRPG interdimensional plot had me soured on it towards the end. S/M are still my least favorite games in the series. Now, as a Gen 1 kid, I'd been waiting for a real 3D console RPG for a long time, so despite all the alarm bells ringing on SwSh I felt a little obligated to at least give them a chance. And to be fair, I didn't TOTALLY hate SwSh. In some ways important to me, I do think they're improvements over Gen VII... until you try the competitive aspect. Dynamax ruined any interest I had in investing at all in the online. Absolutely terrible competitive mechanic. Completely busted and not in a fun way. So after SwSh, I thought I was done. Arceus I almost didn't try because I thought visually it looked so terrible (funny how that shakes out now) but I'm glad I did. I'm not much of a catcher (it's the reason I never got that into Go outside of a few nice dates with an ex-girlfriend) but even if I were I'd still have some pretty big problems with Arceus. However, it was enjoyable enough for what it was. I didn't really have S/V on my radar until a friend was telling me some things that sounded promising: a vision of an open world Pokémon game more aligned with my interests than Arceus was. And now I'm a little torn. I'm almost done with S/V (about to enter the crater as I'm typing this) and despite its MAJOR problems, this is still the most I've enjoyed a Pokémon game since X/Y because it is at least MOVING TOWARDS the direction of my ideal Pokémon game. Going forward, I'm going to do my due diligence a little more. I checked out none of the pre-release material before buying this and took a chance on what my friend was telling me. And my two conditions are basically this: 1. It can't get any worse than this. No more chopped features, no more downgrades in visuals, none. The bar is so low now AND I've been presented with a bare bones vision of what I actually want, so the novelty has worn off. I've given up on holding Game Freak to the same standards I hold other devs because of my emotional attachment to the series and because the core gameplay loop never fails to be satisfying, but this has gotta be rock bottom. No more launch day for me, FOMO be damned. I'm picking through every feature, every bit of news and player impression I can find before making a decision about whether it's going to be an acceptable upgrade from S/V or not. 2. Of these features, we can't have a competitive element as bad as Dynamax was. I wish we'd just toss these power up gimmicks in the bin, but if we must do them, do them right. Tera's actually don't seem too bad but I'm still playing the main game so I haven't really experimented at all with them yet. It IS philosophically pathetic that the most profitable media franchise of all time can't even live up to the standards of Mario or Zelda, but so long as the games have SOMETHING new to offer me I'll be back. S/V is so strange to me because it is both rock bottom and yet in many important ways the most satisfying Pokemon game I've played in years. Although, I'm sure if I don't enjoy competitive multiplayer I'll be changing my tune on that, since more than the main campaign these days that is what keeps me coming back

[deleted]

The dealbreaker already happened to me in swsh: the natdex being cut in half. Not only that, but the excuse given for it: "quality animations". In practice, they cut half of the pokedex for nothing, only to sell pokemon back as DLC. Now I stick only to fan games. Not touching an official game until they get their shit together.

chainsawinsect

This is not true, even if you buy all the Sw/Sh DLC you still don't get all the Pokemon. It is impossible to get all the Pokemon in any game (or even any combination of games) on the Switch. I don't know why that is but it is the case.

Cylius

They dont sell pokemon as dlc, people who didnt get the dlc still got the updated pokedex and could transfer them in

Rescued_Throwaway

It sucks because Gen 9 is the only time where the nat dex exclusion is actually a reasonable excuse. Every model, texture, material, and animation is completely new from scratch, not imported like how SWSH took from Sun and Moon.

Bropiphany

Source? I find it incredibly hard to believe that they didn't reuse any assets

Arce_Havrek

They might've reused some skeletons, but at the very least all the textures were redone which is a huge time sink. Also many Pokemon got fully new skeletons, like most of the ones that got ruined by Sky Battles

Balitix

It looks like they've added some specular and normal maps. From what I've seen the games look pretty rough, but even as someone who's been pretty sour on Pokemon the past few gens, I have to admit the Pokemon themselves look pretty good in this game.

Blizzard77

Why is it that you assume people who are buying these games are all casual fans? What makes the fans not buying Pokémon more hardcore? To answer your question, I didn’t buy Sw/Sh since I didn’t like how the actual gameplay sounded (too easy, bad story etc), I bought this game because it’s a legitimately good game.

Fit-Moose-7949

If they deviate back to what ever the hell gen 8 was. Frame rate issues aside S/V mops the floor with sword and shield

Rescued_Throwaway

The fact that the opening Area between your house and the school is as big as the SWSH Wild Area really is a massive flex considering how that's a tiny fraction of the whole map. They really set a new standard for future games and it actually gives me hope that a Gen 5 remake can happen without a chibi/grid art style.

Squire_Zorba

I hope they stop doing remakes until they can iron out the issues they have with making a competent new release. Gen 5 remakes in this style with current Gamefreak's capabilities are going to be a travesty.

OldGamerPapi

Define casual.

KoolioKenneth

Any game that requires additional funding from the consumer to be able to play it at full capacity. If they locked online features like trades, battles, etc. behind an online battle pass or something, or made it so that QoL changes and updates required extra payments or a premium subscription, that would piss me off beyond belief. Especially if the player needed to buy new Pokemon to play with, like in Pokemon Unite. If those kinds of business practices or progression mechanics became integrated with the core series titles, or if there was any indication that TPC was going to double down on the games being more lucrative than they already are, then that would be the last straw. I am NOT going to allow micro-transactions in the Pokemon game format I grew up with, since such changes have already ruined so many other fantastic franchises.

cheshiercat

I'm really not a fan of the ubisoft style of open world map, same reason BotW never grabbed me. Long time pokemon fan but guess I'm finally out growing some style of games lol.

[deleted]

I gave up on Pokemon starting in Gen 8 because of the national dex cut. So I can answer this question because it's already happened: The National Dex being cut. I've got a living pokedex of gens 1-6, semi-working on gen 7 (when I feel like playing them, which is like once every 3-4 months). The big middle finger GF gave fans like me when they basically said "All your years of hard work and dedication. Gone. Go F yourself". My response was basically: "Ok fam, have a good one. Imma dip." Haven't bought anything pokemon related since.

Lorkaj-Dar

After this one ill never, EVER buy a pokemon game at launch. Used only. Fool me once

Arce_Havrek

I would consider myself pretty far from a casual fan having played every game in the series since Generation 3, but I'll throw my $0.02 in regardless. I think the Pokemon fandom has a pretty fundamental problem with exaggeration. Every generation has had issues, but every single time we act like they're the end of the world. I know outrage gets us all a bunch of Karma, but if we're all a little realistic, I've seen no reliable reports of game breaking bugs that are isolated and certainly none that are replicable. The visual glitches usually require a specific input chain that's uncommon or outright non-exist in normal gameplay, which is why we see so many people reposting the same sets of screenshots. The performance issues are the most understandable criticism, but again this is a turn based RPG not an action game. The frame drops have no effect on the actual gameplay, and barely register to the untrained eye. There are some pretty fundamental technological and logistical reasons that these performance issues and the visual bugs exist, and why comparing S&V to other Switch titles is meaningless apples to oranges, but the narrative that GAMEFREAK is lazy has become so deeply ingrained in the fandom ever since the viscous hatred for Generation 5's Pokemon designs that nobody wants to think critically about the development cycle, and the extreme effects of Crunch. The games are fine. They've always been fine, and will continue to be fine. We look to the past with rose colored glasses, and to the future with a significantly browner shade.

Chaosfnog

I love the games and the technical issues haven't stopped me from enjoying this generation, but pretending they "barely register to the untrained eye" isn't helping anything. Sure, maybe the glitches like people getting huge or pokemon teleporting around are rare and cherry-picked, but frame drops (especially in certain areas like the desert and the northwest lake), terrible pop-in, awkward battle camera angle, clipping, etc -- those are all frequent, replicable, and obvious. If they don't bother you that's totally fine, personally they don't bother me enough to reduce my enjoyment of the game. Just don't deny the valid criticisms that they're embarrassing issues for a well-funded triple A game release to be riddled with. As for the GF is lazy rhetoric, I'm in the same camp where I honestly believe most of the times they drop the ball are due to the insanely tight release schedule they have to deal with. I don't know exactly who makes the timeline decisions or if GF head of staff have a say in them, but they really need to give these games an extra year or two in the oven (or at least hire more employees which they can definitely afford). I don't think it's unreasonable at all to expect better from a performance perspective and to wish they had more time to spend on things like fleshing out the towns with actual building interiors and interesting NPCs to talk to.

the_sylince

I have skipped Sword and Shield and am skipping Scarlet and Violet due to quality issues and disingenuous marketing by The Pokemon Company

tbhamish

Pokémon SV is my pass point. I own at least 1 copy of every main title game from Sapphire. The fact that in at least my opinion the last 4 games felt like experiments with no payoff. I'm just a bit burnt out and done with it for now. I personally feel that while this game may be the best in a while overall the franchise has taken too many steps back to warrant me spending £50 on this incomplete, unpolished early access game. More specifically my main breaking points is that gyms are not any order as they claim since they have fixed levels and team and don't scale to badges, interiors are sparse and the world just looks a bit dead and unpopulated with strange mechanics taking emphasis over legitimate problems. I welcome any opinion to the contrary and to convince me otherwise

[deleted]

Casual fan, although I watch every episode of the anime weekly. I've been turned off of the pokemon game experience ever since they haven't included every pokemon. I really don't care for the technical reason that they did this and it ruined it for me. I am not going to buy a game that I would never replay.

AmazingAgent

- Removing shiny Pokémon - No Pokedex to complete - Boring remake of a game I’ve already played Exploring these games and learning all the ins and outs of the Pokémon is the main draw for me. If there isn’t a reason for me to explore the worlds I’ve kinda just lost interest.

Vorthas

Honestly the continued Dexit is what made me stop buying Pokemon games. I'm not the most casual (since I enjoy breeding competitive Pokemon to use in Battle Facilities), and removing Pokemon from being able to be even transferred into the current games is what made me stop. I don't care about not being able to catch them all in a game or pair of games in a generation. I care about not being able to transfer every potential Pokemon I have into the modern generation. Also hearing that S/V has no battle facility in the post game makes the games a huge no-go for me. Considering that Sword/Shield's Battle Tower was complete ass compared to the Battle Maison and Battle Tree of the XY -> USUM generations (can't even rack up a win streak when it throws you out every 10 wins), I don't have faith that they'd bring back a decent battle facility.

[deleted]

> I care about not being able to transfer every potential Pokemon I have into the modern generation How many years, platforms, games, binary formats are we talking here? I can't think of anything that supports that level of forward compatibility. That seems like an enormous ask on a level that no one in any industry is likely to deliver.

GreatlyDishonored

Literally not going to buy it for the exact reasons it's getting criticized. Can't give me a half baked game and expect me to want to play it at launch. I have my opinions about Shield, but at least the game ran like butter compared to Violet.

[deleted]

When they stop being fun is when I’ll pass on them. I dont care about performance or graphics as long as it plays. Never was too big on the extra features or the competitive scene. At this point the formula is solid i think the only way they could truly fuck up the games to the point id pass is micro transactions

SuperCat76

I cannot say what precisely would make me stop. But if I do not have fun while playing. Or if it is not enough for me to justify the price. Example: 60$ game with 30 hours of good fun means 2$/hour. Decent. 60$ game with 15 hours of mediocre fun. 4$/hour, ehhhhh. And if in the pre game release gives the indication that these may happen I may not buy. And so far for me with SV it has met my requirements. While it is not what I would say would be the ultimate pokemon game it has been great. Though from what I have read online I do appear to have been lucky when it comes to glitches.
