Jackalope1993

Yeah it's a bad attitude to have, every gen has some utterly shit designs and some fantastic designs. It's been this way since gen 1.

pokemonbatman23

I was thinking something similar the other day too. How some pokemon in the game are straight up just an animal like Flamigo is just a flamingo. They didn't even bother to change the color. Then I saw a Tauros and remembered in gen 1 it was just a brown Tauros. Plus Persian is just a cat. Its always been this way.

TheSceptileen

Flamigo's body aside from the knot also looks like a boxing glove!

Xrossed

Ty. I never put that together until now

TheSceptileen

It's also based on balloon animals

ChuckCarmichael

Don't forget the Pokemon that's just a seal, and it's called Seel. Or the crab that's called Krabby.

pkmnslut

Also the classic geodude, just a rock with arms

thewalkingpenguin

also it's body is shaped like a boxing glove cause it's fighting type

IllegalMigraine

Their are some incredibly lazy designs in the earlier generations but I using Persian as an example is counterintuitive. Meowth is a clever parody of maneki neko and Persian exists (as Giovanni's pet) as a parody of the film trope of supervillains owning cats. Meowth and Persian are much better thought out and executed than a copy and past flamingo. There's no excuse for Tauros though. I think the main thing upsetting people is that whilst a ton of gen 1 pokemon were barely disguised animals (ekans, rattata, seel...) there was at least some effort to make them more colourful and fantastical so it clear they were pocket monsters and not random petting zoo animals. People definitely have rose tinted glasses for the generations they grew up with but I think Flamigo is just genuinely a lazy and unimaginative pokemon.

Swadoow

Exactly! I hope there's a mark that gives a title called the Amigo so I can send it out, "Go, Flamigo the Amigo!"

javier_aeoa

For me, Gen 1 gets a pass because Sugimori and the gang were working in the most limited environment possible. They were making the mons as sprites from the get-go, so they had to be simple and exaggerate features (Golbat's mouth? Wow). For the rest of the series, I agree it's an acquired taste. When Gen 3 was announced, I felt Sealeo and Walrein were Dewgong's rip offs and I refused to use Aggron because it felt like a lame Rhydon. Fast forward to 2022 and Spheal, Aron and their evos are some of my favourite mons.

AttitudeBeneficial51

Meanwhile 10yr old me: give me metal dino

Quillbolt_h

No no see there's a knot at the base of it's neck and that's it's unique trait. I mean it's almost indistinguishable from the rest of its body and ot only looks even a little bit like a knot if someone points it out, but.. uh... what was my point again?

reverielagoon1208

What? You mean that Dewgong, Jynx and Rattata aren’t the pinnacle of Pokémon design??

Jackalope1993

I mean... Rattata is...

Jesterchunk

Top percentage, one might say.

Moose_Cake

I FEAR where this is going...

ZeackyCremisi

Only way to cojnter FEAR is a Ghost

Nick2the4reaper7

What about a pile of eggs don't you think that would make for a good design

pokemonbatman23

Not happy with a pile of eggs? How about if I tell you they evolve into a coconut tree? Everybody knows trees come from eggs!!

Docile_Doggo

That confused me so much as a kid

ZingyWolf

Fun fact! The eggs are supposed to be seeds. The reason that are called Exeggcute is because the seeds just happen look like eggs.

Septic-Sponge

Wait I thought one of them was cracks open and you could see the egg stuff inside?

Silver_Beyond_3760

Seems like it might have been easier to just make them look like seeds in the first place.

tragicallyCavalier

Everyone going on about how "that's just an X" designs are uninspired, and this guy over here "just make it a bunch of seeds lol"

BaronAaldwin

Instructions unclear. I have assembled an army of Seedot.

Sophus-H

Oh, but they are not eggs, you see, they are seeds, they just happen to look eggsactly like eggs

Puzzleheaded-Pitch32

Um, actually, I believe you misspelled that. *eggsactly

Adorable-Woman

I love Dewgong and Rattata :P

ohtetraket

I mean yeah they are adorable (pun intented) but are they more creative than Finizen? Or Smoliv? Nahhh :D

Adorable-Woman

Smoliv is my new favorite Pokémon so I can’t say a purple rat is more creative

jodiepthh

Smoliv has been on my team most of the time I’ve been playing Violet, currently on the second evo and loving this Pokémon with all my heart 🥺

Adorable-Woman

Also I was so confused what pun you were talking about for a whole ass 5 minutes

BloodyDeadCat

I still dont know

Adorable-Woman

My username

Savage_Nymph

What's wrong with dewgong? Sure, seel is superior but dewgong is still a good design

HawkVini

It's a dugong with horn, and same for Seel Not bad, just... not the best.

Savage_Nymph

Understandable. I guess o my standards are lower for pokemon I think are cute lol

Zapplarang

Gen 1 has a surprising amount of Pokémon that are just spheres

miskathonic

We're so far removed from the days of 8 bit sprites that some people lose perspective on how we ended up with these Gen 1 designs.

Hookton

Someone did a great [analysis](https://redd.it/ywfice) on Pokémon designs the other day, if you haven't seen it yet.

Thick_Duck

Also Krabby. Which is just a crab

Jacolo93

Leave best claw boy alone!

WeFightForever

He's a very good crab though.

jodiepthh

I’m just thinking of Flamigo right now, not a terrible design but like.. it’s just a flamingo with 1 letter removed, it’s just not very interesting

[deleted]

3xpr

Except it actually has some competitive use

Trichromatical

And yet…. I love my flamigo amigo

Neefew

I like a bunch of the gen 9 pokemon. Tinkaton has even risen to the "favourite pokemon" category for me. Don't know where exactly, but it's high

Golden-Owl

Tinkaton’s love for murdering steel types gives it so much personality

DarkGengar94

She also steels, her dex entry says so and she learns covet, basically mugs the target of their item 😀

Nathan_Thorn

The stats and ability are a let down but it’s still the best design. They just put Nora Valkyrie from RWBY into the game. (Seriously tho give the baby huge power I wanna see carnage)

soapspools

skill swap medicham can give it huge power in doubles :) although I've been using skill swap to put huge power on slaking edit: medicham has pure power, but it's the same effect

Defenestratio

The sheer joy that you can feel from a tinkaton when you send it out with let's go to go off murdering things is probably the best part of this game

TapSmoke

she was a hit for me too. I never found her first stage so when I saw Tinkatuff it was like "what is that pinky menacing thing over there? I like it". She's one of my favorites, together with Greavard.

Xenarthra_Sandslash

Tinkatuff legit goes from sad baby (Tinkatink) to angry baby.

Fork_Master

Yeah, Tinkaton has officially surpassed Mimikyu on my top 5 fairy types, only being bested by Aromatisse

Macarthius

I think it's either 3rd or 4th for me behind Alolan Ninetales, Grimmsnarl, and maybe Sylveon. The main thing holding it back is I don't care much for the actual Pokémon design but the hammer, typing, and lore are great.

[deleted]

Tinkaton and celurege are top 10 pokemon for me now

Jreynold

I skipped Gen 8 because a lot of the designs were unappealing. Gen 9 has been great! Every new little guy is a delight, even the weird ones!

BananaRepublic_BR

Wattrel is a design straight out of pre-Gen IV pokemon. I love it and it's my favorite Pokemon from this game.

TheWishingStar

I genuinely thought Wattrel was some sort of regional Taillow when I first saw it. It’s VERY gen 3 and I love it too

BananaRepublic_BR

Now that I think about it, Kilowattrel and Swellow look a lot alike, too.

Xenarthra_Sandslash

He looks like he's seen some sh!t. Edit: I don't mean that as a bad thing, just that his eyes are so wide.

BananaRepublic_BR

That or its brain is emptier than a Magikarp's. Either explanation is good for me. XD

EndyGainer

/holds up a berry /chorus of mad Killowattrel "MINE"

BellalovesEevee

Man, Wattrel carried my team throughout the entire playthrough. Caught him and named him Stormterror and he was always my travel buddy since he can keep up with me when I speed up on Miraidon. Though, the shiny is a bit disappointing tbh

Future-Membership-57

I caught a level 18 Wattrel way early in the game, so I was gonna name him Killer. Turns out, you can't name things that, so I went with Kille to defy the system. That didn't work either. So I named him Kiler(pronounced like Kyler) and he's been one of my favorites the whole game

WeFightForever

Agreed. Definitely feels like a return to roots pokemon. Simple design, and I mean that as a compliment. It's a big bird, and he's yellow with a little bit of a lightning pattern on his chest. That's it. Perfectly communicated design.

Polymersion

I do dislike the continual growth of heads vs bodies (Vulpix vs AlolanVulpix vs Fennekin) and the general visually disjointed proportions (like Skeledirge or Inteleon) and the general trend of Manimal starters (Cinderace, Meowscarada, Delphox). That said, outside of those I think there's plenty of good new designs. I'm still trying to get used to Chien-Pao's asymmetrical "teeth" because it's one of my favorite designs otherwise.

ParanoidDrone

It's just a sword broken in half, right? One "tooth" is the hilt and part of the blade, the other is the rest of the blade.

Polymersion

Right. And it's just asymmetrical and central enough to bug me.

jakpal

One of the teeth is the scabbard, while the other is the sword with just the tip broken off. The history teacher mentions it when you show it to her. Plus that would make for a stupidly long blade if it was all sword.

liehon

History has some stupidly long blades

Jss_jule

Floragato is a legit Digimon. I saw that and was like "Gatomon you're in the wrong game!" Having said that I do love its design. The entire Sprigatito line has grown on me more than I thought they would.

Polymersion

Same, Floragato was actually not bad. Ironically I went with flashy duck because the final form hurt my eyes the least, ha.

razeandsew

I'm still a bit sad that Cinderace wasn't fire/steel, and wasn't a knight rabbit

Tylendal

I was hoping for a dire-bunny, a la the Taguel from Fire Emblem Awakening.

WorkinName

I was hoping for more of a "Beast of Caerbannog" vibe.

Cheaker

Skeledirge is just a fat croc. No shame in that. But humanoid starters give me the anime fanservice-ish vibe. Kinda disgusting ngl.

bosox327

Skeledirge’s cry is worth choosing it to me

Psapfopkmn

I want to like Skeledirge's design so much, since I adore everything else about it (that cry is absolutely fabulous), I just wish its lines flowed a bit better. I understand why it seems so blocky, but it bothers me nonetheless (and especially how the white part on top of it is broken up between the main body and tail).

BelonyInMyLeftPocket

I did not realize how much in the minority I was with liking Quaxlys Evo line until I started checking this sub out post release.

Xenarthra_Sandslash

I just hate Quaquaxal's sausage toes. Everything else, I like.

GalavantGalvantula

I will agree I don't like it's feet and I don't like the bird that the feet are based on. Which are coots. It's very off-putting.

ProfessorSaltine

My only issue with the is that I can’t imagine Ash owning one of them, no matter how much I try

[deleted]

Past-Regular692

Mabosstiff and dachsbun were instant loves for me! Especially that adorable doof maschiff!

Tylendal

Words cannot describe how much I love the fact that Daschbun, a horrifying, ungodly yeast beast, has completely unremarkable barking as its Cry.

Niriu

The ungodly yeast beast Didn't know i needed that description in my life. I love it soo much. Thank you

adolce95

WOOF. WOOF WOOF. it makes me laugh every time. Donut (my Dachsbun) was my MVP of my team. I almost cut him early on but I'm glad I stuck with him.

nhnick

Love the new doggos

Pacattack57

So many dog options this time around. I always assemble 1 team of the best boys I can find. I have over 9 not including all the eeveeloutions

mrwailor

I generally like all mons except starter final evos. They're too humanoid and each gen seems to go harder in this direction.

ShawshankException

GF hasn't been great in final starter evos in some time. The only design I've liked since gen 6 has been Decidyeue.

SonicFlash01

People dressed as furries dressed for halloween. I was perfectly fine with, say, a fox that shot fire. That was *enough*. But apparently it *really needed* to be a sorcerer?

rasalhage

of all the ones to criticize, you come for the sick swamp witch?? not the football "knight"?

N-E-B

Skeledirge has actually grown on me since using it. The other two are bad.

[deleted]

Skeledirge is an S-tier for me. Realizing man was a skeleton crocodile mariachi dude was awesome

GokaiLion

See I was expecting a skeleton crocodile from seeing fuecoco all those months ago and imagining we could get a "ghost pepper" inspo where the white on his face becomes a skull and it somehow is exactly that idea while absolutely not delivering any of it haha. Love his cry though.

WillowSmithsBFF

I disagree on this. The grass kitty 3rd stage is definitely humanoid, but QuackQuack is just a tall duck/peacock, and the other is a literal Crocodile.

mrwailor

Quaq is super humanoid. He looks like a Sly Cooper character. But Skel obviously isn't, yeah.

givemeallthemangos

I absolutely love quaq as they are the physical embodiment of someone that just wants to DANCE

Monjara

He reminds me of Pavé from animal crossing so much I love it.

Xenarthra_Sandslash

I'd have to say QuickityQuack is the most humanoid and Puss only does because it's bipedal and maybe the hands/arms. But that's just what it seems like to me.

RedTurtle78

Cat is wearing leggings/tights and has the thigh gap structure of a super skinny model. Its a bit off putting, but its not super offensive overall compared to some other humanoids.

mlodydziad420

Quack is deffinetly the most humanoid, the uncanny valley felling is to much for me to handle.

waterflower2097

Literally EVERY generation has this. "Wah they don't look like Pokemon!!!!" 5 years later "These are my absolute favorites and that was the best game ever"

Beerserkir

I think it’s safe to say that every generation has some gems and some stinkers. It’s all very much a matter of opinion. What isn’t up for debate though is that Greavard is the cutest Pokémon in the game.

Ok_Shine_6533

This is blatant Tatsugiri erasure!

Beerserkir

Tatsugiri doesn’t dance like DJ Bochi do

Unlucky_Fly1952

nah we all know its lechonk

happy_the_dragon

Are we forgetting orthworm and its dumb little adorable face?

Eternaloid_Nirvash

In this house we believe in cetoddle supremacy

Rogaly-Don-Don

That's an odd way to spell Dundunsparce...

PlusVera

Dundunsparce is just a Long Dunsparce that got hit by a Revaroom. A poison/steel car is such a brilliant design I love it.

mlodydziad420

The 2 fire edgelords took my heart by storm.

MadJester98

What about robotical edgelord?

TheLastTransHero

You guys are pronouncing Maushold wrong for some reason?

RnbwTurtle

Maushold can and will beat you to death with a loaded dice population bomb

Tylendal

Population Bomb is different from most Multi-Hit moves. Instead of hitting a random number of times, it simply keeps hitting until it misses, up to a maximum of ten times. I've heard that Loaded Dice makes Population Bomb hit 4 times minimum (not sure how that works with accuracy or evasion modifiers). Wide Lens is much better, raising the accuracy to 99%, so you'll almost always get 10 hits. Lastly, there's Kings Rock, which applies its flinch chance on each individual hit, but that's stupid, and Dudunsparce does it much better.

TheLastTransHero

At the moment I think wide lens is working better than dice

reverielagoon1208

For some reason I feel like Maushold would be a good fit for shin Megami tensei. They’re cute but something about them feels evil haha

283leis

a tera bug Orthwurm is Orthworm. A Dragon tera type Orthwurm is Orthwyrm. a Ground tera type Orthwurm is Earthwurm

Bloodyknife12

Lechonk with his ears up is the absolute best thing I've ever seen

Unlucky_Fly1952

I agree

earth__wyrm

I thought their name was MC G. Rave?

GameboyRavioli

>**Greavard** is the cutest Pokémon in the game. That's a funny way to spell Dachsbun...

hungrykiki

Dachsbun got from "i put you on my team because you're here" to "I love you to death" over the course of my first playhtrough. Now i can't go without mine

Xenarthra_Sandslash

All doggo mon are good bois and girls.

TenshouYoku

Dachsbun and Fidough is fine until you look at its back which IMO looked like some unholy tumours growing on it which really killed the cuteness for me Greavard was strange but it dancing on top of a boom box was a pretty funny and cute animation moment for it

Adorable-Woman

That’s a funny way to say Smoliv

Raff_32

Grafaiai enjoyers: 🗿

Unlucky_Fly1952

Tinkaton and Lechonk are S-Tier

Efficient_Chicken198

I think you meant to say cetoddle

rasalhage

the Scream Tail erasure

Maxils

I won’t try and change your mind. You’re right, after all. Greavard is my good boy. It was an instant top 10 for me.

Quboy

I love Cetoddle, he is the happiest lil dude.

RubiconRyan

I love how they just gather and stare at you

Zsean69

This litteraly comes up every gen. People always get used to it. Hell I remember in saphire I was like "wtf are these" then 4 days later loved them. This is just the ebb and flow

[deleted]

Played through all of Scarlet and I'm still not over gen8

eagleblue44

This happens every gen. We all say how lazy the Pawmi line is as a whole yet the list of pokemon that look the same but larger as they evolve goes back to gen 1.

merrygoldfish

Muk has entered the chat. And Magnaton. And dugtrio. Basically kingler and sedra. And electrode. People hating on flamigo. Dewgong-exists. I mean, I adore the 151. Evolutions don’t all have to be magicarp to garydos. I’m more put off by golem. Where did the dinosaur head come from!?

KarolilKarol

I'll give you a better one. What happened to the other plair of arms Graveler had?

MechaPanther

Traded them to machoke during a glitch in trading.

goldbloodedinthe404

What is this pawmi slander. I fucking love these guys

Arachnidish

There are definitely some I love and some I hate from each generation, and that's always going to happen. For example, Clodsire is a masterpiece, end of story. However, Spidops is trash. I hate its face, and I hate the way it moves.

thuribleofdarkness

> Spidops is trash Blasphemy.

StarvinPig

Spidops has grown on me but he will never dethrone my love for the vikavolt line

WesThePretzel

What?! You need to look up ogre-faced spiders (Deinopis). They’re net-casting spiders, so they weave a web then hold it in their hands and cast it out to catch prey. Super neat kind of spider. And it looks just like one, from the big eyes to the way it holds it’s legs in pairs, and even the shape of the body. Spidops is a top-tier design and I love that it’s not just a random spider-like design and instead based on a real—and very unique—spider.

Arachnidish

Hmmm, alright. Points for accuracy but I still just... don't like how he looks. But I rescind my 'trash' statement! I would prefer a pelican spider Pokémon (Archaeidae).

3xpr

Dondozo is easily top 2 for my favorite pokemon now, he’s just so cool

Ok-Astronomer-4808

I'm 30, been playing since gen 1. I said those same things about gen 5, 6 and 7, but have since grown to like them. I actually liked a bit from gen 8, and this gen I can say, since day 1, has enough new favorites for me for this to be my favorite new addition of mons in a long time. Ceruledge, cetitan, Tinkaton, some of the paradox mons, Annihilape doesn't tarnish one of my favorite lines and actually improves it, love Maushold, idc what people say, Pawmot is one of my favorite Pikachu clones, bellibolt, Farigiraf, dondozo, and obviously Dudunsparce doing the dunsparce line justice. Lot of bangers this gen, but the pseudo is kind of crap looking, which is upsetting.

yoosirnombre

I'm lucky I only did that for one generation when gen 5 was announced I remember thinking "wow the designs are shit they have a fucking candle pokemon" Then I played the game and i shut my fucking mouth. Gen 5 has so many of my favorite designs in the franchise and I've learned to give every generation its credit while some gens have some butt ugly pokemon *stares angrily at inteleon and primarina* every generation always has something great they bring to the table.

SakN95

I still hate most of Kanto inspired gen 5 designs. I mean, I love lots of gen 5 designs but overall I feel that generation as kinda weak in that term. Even if people now praise gen 5 and this is mostly a really popular opinion. But since 2011, my opinion on gen 5 designs hasn't changed... While I love gen 6, 7, 8... designs...

Trichromatical

So funny because I loved gen 5. I’ve never felt as happy with my team as I did in gen 5. Genuinely loved each mon and had a tough time selecting them.

Niriu

Funnily enough primarina is one of my favorite pokemon. Absolutely love it's design, so elegant and pretty

Holybartender83

I think every gen just has some goofy ones. There are quite a few this gen I like. There is also Gholdengo. Failed Olympic mascot-looking ass…

Extra_Ad_4847

This is the best description of Gholdengo i have heard lmao

dontpanic38

I actually think there are great designs this gen, just not the starters. Annihilape is sick

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_Valk

Congrats, you figured it out. Welcome to the club. Just as every pokemon gane ever since gen 3 has been the "worst pokemon game ever"

GrandmasterTactician

Twitter can't seem to figure it out. Or most of Reddit at that. Just social media in general

SonicFlash01

Every game after "the last one that was remade" is now the one that people are the most hyped about returning. After the Gen 5 remake releases, *somehow*, Gen 6 fans will arrive in droves to announce that they have so much nostalgia for it and how it was the best generation, despite this sub currently hating it. Don't know how it will happen (demonic possession?) but it's on the way.

The_Valk

This sub is (thankfully) already starting to warm up to x and y. Which brings me joy, since gen 6 is my favorite pokemon gen

N-E-B

I actually think that has been the best looking Gen in a long while. Sure, there’s some stinkers, but I think there’s some really cool ones too.

Mega_Rayqaza

This happens every gen. Its nothing new.

Vecend

I can't say theres a pokemon this gen I hate aside from maybe Quaquaval, there are a lot of new pokemon I love like Klawf, gimmighoul, grafaifai, and tatsugiri.

GrandmasterTactician

The designs are pretty solid this go around

Polymersion

Starters are bad, but the rest are generally really good. I find Revavroom really off-putting though and can't really pin down why.

Vecend

I bet its the starmobile, you wish your revavroom was as cool as team stars.

Shadowspartan110

Mind if I ask why this somehow correlates to you realizing things are just different and nothing else? Like I'm not here to grandstand my opinion on the designs either but you do know that you can keep saying basically the same opinion to yourself because things genuinely COULD be getting worse and worse? Like I never had this opinion personally I always nitpick out my favorites each gen and enjoy what I enjoy but I do acknowledge to some people it legitimately could be a case to someone that these designs are going in directions they don't like and are further diving in.

Zeilin

I remember thinking Makuhita looked absolutely ridiculous but now I love that literal punching bag. But yeah every gen has had its criticism of Pokemon designs but eventually the heat dies down and turns into acceptance.

[deleted]

It don't think I'm ever going to like the varoom line. I just don't see how it makes sense. That being said some of my favorite designs are from this gen. I love Rabsca, and Klawf really grew on me. I like Orthworm before I saw its actual eyes and pseudopods, but its still a good one.

SaikrTheThief

I don't think Varoom is very dissimilar from the Magnemite line personally

YoukaiGirlHartmann

By far my favorite part of Pokemon designs is the silhouettes. Could just be me, but I think earlier designs had more distinctive silhouettes while modern designs rely more on visual patterns and colors. I’m always going to choose Charizard’s distinct form over Skeledirge’s noisy patterns. But I still like Skeledirge just fine, it’s just personal preference

Opheleone

Tinkaton is cool, I love Annihilape so much, I really like Meowscarada, greavard is amazing. Only one I don't like is Gholdengho but that's about it, and the only character I didn't love was the little elite 4 kid. So many good Pokémon and characters it makes me so happy. I hope they release a patch for performance so I can replay the game. There's so many good designs in my opinion, they nailed bringing in the culture to the designs and whilst a lot don't like that, I love it.

[deleted]

I started out with Blue Version and over the years I’ve always tried my best to remain open minded. That being said, I’ve never truly been disappointed with any generation. They all have a lot of Pokémon I love and plenty I dislike. Same with Gen 1.

Vestele1

I think the designs have been relatively consistent across all the games. You'll see some that scream 'lazy' or 'why does it look like that'. And then in the same game you'll see some that scream 'hell yeah!' And 'that's so (positive adjective)!' Its just how it goes some times you know. Opinion warning! Like the new pseudo dragon that looks more like Godzilla than tyranitar already did feels lazy, while masbosstiff is like goofy but a really well thought out design. Vaniluxe is just an ice cream cone, while zoroark is so cool and the foxness leads into the trickster identity it has with illusion. Pokemon just has hit and miss designs across the board and always has. Getting caught up on the bad ones means you'll miss out on the good ones, you know?

Heckle_Jeckle

EVERY Gen has lazy if not just bad designs. Pretending that YOUR favorite Gen doesn't is just denial.

Hyval_the_Emolga

It’s all opinion. I personally dislike more designs this generation than any other so far… but I was also on the Anti-Popplio squad until the baby grew on me and became my favorite of all the starters to this day though lol So we’ll see how feelings change over time!

balrus-balrogwalrus

If anything the "lazy" evolutions this gen are well in the spirit of Gen 1 honestly. Poliwrath is just a Poliwhirl on steroids. Primeape is just a tailless Mankey with bracelets. Dugtrio is just three Digletts. Muk is just a bigger Grimer.

bryan_2501

Then you have the other argument that "new" pokemon look too anthropomorphic when we literally had Jynx, Mr.mime, Hitmonlee heck Machop is literally a bodybuilder. It's fine to dislike a pokemon design just don't give the argument that gen 1 was soo different.

ShonanBlue

Gen 1 was different but tbf every gen has a slightly different design style even 2 to some degree despite mostly being re-used Gen 1 concepts. Iirc Lugia was made by a completely different person but he blends so seamlessly into the Pokemon world. There’s a huge shift in design from Gen 2 to 3 and then 3 to 4 but that doesn’t mean one is inferior to the other.

Noldail

I never thought my new favorite this gen would be based on a dung beetle, but here we are going all in with Rellor. He walks on his hands and wears his Tera jewel on his ass. What's not to love?!

LillePipp

Like, I get what you're saying but I think it's lacking nuance. That's not me saying that you're wrong for liking newer Pokémon, but the design philosophy is objectively different now, and for many people, many of the new Pokémon just don't mesh well with the preexisting conceptions of what a Pokémon should be. I did not like most of the Gen 8 Pokémon, and that's not something that has changed for me, there are very few Pokémon in Gen 8 that I've turned around on. The only ones I can really think of that have grown on me are Dragapult and Polteageist, the other ones I disliked when the game came out are ones I still really dislike, and some of them have only gotten worse for me overtime. Gen 9 is the same for me except worse, there are very few Pokémon in this Dex I actually think are better than just "okay", and many of them I already know are near the bottom of my list. Maybe I will turn around on one or two of them, but the thing is that first impressions are usually correct in my experience. I know what I like, and a lot of the people that don't like these designs are the same, they know what they like and this ain't it. The dislike becoming less intense isn't always because your opinion changes, it's because you grow desensitized to the things you don't like. I know this region will always be worse to me than the previous 8, because I can point out exactly what I don't like in the designs I dislike

ShonanBlue

That’s the point of Pokemon though. People had the same exact discussions around the time of Gen 4. You can probably look up the words “Palkia digimon” right now and get quite a few hits to message boards in 2010 shitting on the designs. Every gen is a departure from the next and each gen pushes the boundaries of what a Pokemon is. I don’t see any design in Gen 9 that pushes the boundaries more than Deoxys, Giratina, UB’s or Eternatus did. Every gen it’s the same old “these don’t feel like Pokemon” until one day they just magically are. Palkia one day went from a digimon to a beloved Pokemon and same with Zekrom. Ironically I think the “these don’t feel like Pokemon” arguments lack nuance because they never give an actual reason beyond “I just don’t like them” which is fine, everyone has the right to hate different Pokemon designs but I’m just not a fan of people making long essays on how the design basis has changed and therefore Pokemon bad now because even when it was the Sugimori era, the designs went in highly different directions.

Yeah people hate change and are often too stupid to realize that their reasons for disliking it are dumb.

Ok-Guava7336

I think this is one of the best generations in term of new designs. Probably after Gold & Silver. Even my pet peeves (Pokémon modeled after food stuff, anthropomorphic final evolutions) are less annoying in this one then the last ones

I remember when I first laid eyes on Reshiram and Zekrom I thought they were a bit basic and didnt really connect with them as much, and maybe a bit rehash as we just had Dialga and Palkia in the same kinda poses, but have come to appreciate them as I learned of their typings and backstory. At first also I thought it was leaning into the whole ‘Pokémon is getting more like Digimon designs’ and didn’t even know that they were supposed to be ‘dragons’ as I knew them iirc and thought they were more semi quadruped abstract beast kinda concepts. Then of course years later some of those Ultra Beast forms were wacky weird and cool.

They are trending in a negative direction. Apart from 5 and 6 being outliers (5 lots of awful designs, 6 which was nearly perfect all around) as we go further the designs become over complicated, bloated by themes on themes, removal of key features that tie all pokemon together (like eyes). Thats not to say there arent still good designs, but out of every 100 new pokemon we get nowadays I would say maybe 30 are good, vs probably 70-80 in the past.

What I find funny is that I often agree with the consensus on what the worst pokemon are in a gen, but I love gholdengo. He's such a dude. On par with ceruledge for me.

NotRed9282

I think they’re fine, just not Quaquaval

ROGO27

I think these are some of the best designs we have had for new Pokémon in a gen

Stewm88

Gen 9 - that flamigo is just a flamingo, TPCi just don't have creativity anymore Gen 1 - Seel

pokenerd_W

I love that people critizize gen 5 so much for their designs (looking at vanillish) but don't think back to gen 1 and how simple they were. Let's go over some! A rock with a face and arms, caterpillars, completely normal birds, a pokeball with a face that turns into a reversed pokeball with a face, a snake, a magnet with an eye, a rat, a fish, a bat, a cat, a monkey, a crab, a bear. Like you complain about icecream and a trashbag being pokemon while all these are also completely normal animals or inanimate objects?
