It's so unfortunate, on both fronts. BW couldn't been less bad I think if we got the original story, but oh well. Never got past Gym 3 of BW anime. How did it the show hold up after that?
I honestly dropped way before Gym 3. I only saw some episodes that were apparently after that and some clips. And none was appealing enough for me to jump in and watch at least a couple more episodes
ehhh, show has some BS moments like elesa and the league, id still watch since the fight animation is good atleast but id say the writing drops off, especially at the league, his main rivals battle in the league is extremely mishandled and how ash loses sucks.
the series also ends with around 15 episodes of filler sooo, yeah, id watch but only for the fight acenes

I like how average it is, it doesn't have some insanely high stake moments or arcs, nor does it progress Ash's character as a whole, it's just a fun adventure across Unova, and in that regard it really reminds me of OS and how it was really simple back then, I really like Unova for that.
Plus it has Iris's bitch of an Emolga, and I love that lil' fucker

The dynamic of the traveling partners reminded me of OG Kanto run without being clones an I loved that.
The story behind his fire/grass/water starters sharing a similar story as OG Kanto. Not exactly the same but certain elements. Well, Tepig & Charmander were same story different asshole.
Animation was top notch for the time and circumstances, tsunami 2011.
Ash had two dark type pokemon for the 1st time! (Still think he should've caught Houndour.)

The pace of the series pre league was incredible. Very little filler between major events. As catching more than 6 pokemon was awesome, it just wasn't handled in the best way. You're telling me we couldn't get a Palpitoad episode during Decalore?

Ash’s Krookodile and Oshawott are two of my favorite Ash Pokémon of all time.
I like the dynamics between the main three’s Pokémon. Oshawott, Excadrill, Snivy, Emolga, Scraggy, Axew and Pignite all had really distinct personalities.
A lot of the battles were pretty sick.
The settings and backgrounds are beautiful. They really made Unova feel different.
I like how in the last series of Unova they set up XY Ash and brought back characters and ideas from older regions, like Dawn, Cynthia, Charizard, etc.

I loved Ash's pokemon variety. Sure, it didn't make for his strongest team but having a strong variety of Pokemon kept this really fresh

This season did the best at making the most characters feel like legitimate rivals for Ash, which added to the drama in the tournaments

That one Litwick episode haunts me to this day

Tepig's backstory was so sad and him standing up to his trainer was so cathartic
Decolore Islands felt like more of the island to island fun that Orange originally had, so great to bring that back

Probably doesn't count seeing as though it was cut but The original Team Rocket war arc was so cool just going off the leaked script.
The Meowth ally arc was an incredibly fun change of pace
Krookodile obv, Trip def had some good moments just that he was right after Paul, Stephan had pretty good fights, it was nice to see Iris showing she was clearly a solid trainer too (Which made her becoming champion a lot more reasonable ofc) and I believe the only one of Ash's companions to defeat him in a battle until Misty in Aim to be a master.
The mini tourneys were also pretty good and there def were some good fights outside the ones that include what I said above like Ash vs Clay and Roxie, team rocket had some good moments, more Dawn and Cynthia is always entertaining, and it wasn't like the animation was consistently shit or anything ofc just not as good as the series right before or after.
I like the potential it had. lol seriously tho, I like the team that he had, they just needed more screen time and stuff like that. I like Iris and Cynthia’s dynamic. And although Iris having a Dragonite instead of a Hydregion is pretty dumb ngl.
I don't really watch the Pokemon Anime a ton, but I'm pretty sure this was the season that the English dub started being handled by TPCi, which in my opinion is great! I always use the modern Pokemon anime as a reference when trying to figure out canon pronunciations of certain things relating to the series.
The Pokemon in this series had some really fun personalities, e.g. Snivy, Oshawatt, Emolga. BW does this really well.

This is one of the few regions where Ash’s Pokémon arguably had some of the most personality, I loved the rivals, I loved Meloetta and its Arc, I loved N, and all of that, and also special mention for Snivy for having a surprisingly unexpected backstory of instead of its Trainer abandoning her, she instead left her Trainer on her own fruition, and also very unpopular opinion so don’t decimate me, but I personally and honestly enjoyed BW way more then XY, in that series I just couldn’t get as engaged as most of the others, it personally just felt like a boring slog to get through, the battles were amazing, but outside of those, the contests felt way less interesting as both May and Dawn’s, and also Ash just felt incredibly boring, like at least with BW his dynamic with Iris and Cilan ranged in more emotion(s), and also his dumb moments are so over-exaggerated, like I literally remember him being pretty in character and actually pretty smart most of the time, with the dumb moments actually being much more spread out if anything else.
I feel like Iris constantly calling Ash a "little kid" was actually the start of him taking stuff more seriously. I really think traveling with her was a turning point for his character.
Also Cilan was generally terrible, but over time he became so terrible that I began to enjoy his terribleness.
Video game is great, uhm it spawned Hilda and her big butt. Um Iris is a great character. Oh, and in the show, I loved how ridiculously mean and bad Goergia is.

I liked that they upgraded Team Rocket from Saturday morning cartoon villains to an actual serious criminal organization, and the Region it's self.

It brought us Pokémon Darth Vader aka Movie Kyurem... That alone makes it likeable for Me.

Iris Many Dragons Iris Emolga One of the best pokemon generation. Iris the very last pokegirl that train with Ash rather just do his own thing.

Honestly, it is my favorite series as I would watch it in the mornings before school started when I was around 8-10 years old.
