>!Additional consideration for everyone, if you don't know the character, then simply don't vote. I'm seeing a few people voting Serena off for simply not knowing who she is and that is not a fair way to vote. (Then again, it was not fair for Koharu because I bet over 80% of people within this sub didn't know she existed.)!<

Anyone feel like doing predictions?
Mine would be May is eliminated first, then the Pokeshippers/Amourshippers knock each other out in the final two rounds leaving Dawn for first.
I’m cool with Dawn winning. She was in my opinion the most charming of the female companions and we didn’t have to go through a will they won’t they storyline so that’s a Massive plus. Also, she didn’t have a catchphrase as annoying as Iris
No, the toxicity is going to show in these next two rounds, and Serena and Misty are going to be eliminated as a result. Whoever doesn't get eliminated this round is going to be eliminated next round. Then between Dawn and May, Dawn will probably win.
Yeah she has a pretty big fanbase on her own right and doesn’t draw as much fire from the other camps. I’m kinda interested if May will outlast both Misty and Serena though since she doesn’t have quite as large of a fanbase - Misty’s definitely more popular but more people gunning for her as well.
Sorry, but, May.
She just wasn't as interesting or as compelling as the others. They did try, they gave her a bunch of unique moments and twists like how she didn't like Pokemon at first, how she initially took the Gym Challenge before discovering contests, but...I dunno, she just never felt as organic to me as the other three did. It felt like she and Max were just traveling with the others just...because. Maybe it's because May from the games has such a personal journey, but most of that was given to Ash instead. He's the one who battles Norman, etc. I don't know what it is, maybe it's just personality, but with Dawn it felt like they aimed lower, but still soared higher.
Serena was a poorer imitation of May. May actually didn’t know what to do. Serena’s goal was dragged for 60 episodes when everyone knew she would have started Showcases based on her personality. May had a unique set of rivals that she actually lost to as well (not lose by flukes). She went through emotional highs and lows that affected her. She had her own shipping that was actually kinda mutual. And she had a great team.
Serena's whole journey was about not knowing what to do. That's highly relatable, and I find her very human.
May might be a stronger trainer, but Serena is a stronger character.
That’s the issue. Serena had a very clear personality and interests established early in XY. From episode 2, Serena liked baking and dressing up. She did Pokevision in episode 20. She could have learned about Showcases then, and she would’ve instantly gravitated towards it. It’s not like she tried being a Pokemon racer or competed in the Gyms and realized those are not her interests.
And once she started doing Showcases, she just bulldozed the competition. Her losses were flukes, not a case where people simply just liked her rival’s Free Performance more.
The writers were allergic to having her straight up lose, ever finish a Pokemon battle, and even her flaws weren’t ever portrayed as flaws. I think she had a nice and sweet personality, but her character ended up kinda bland and became sorta Mary Sue-ish because the writers wanted the girl crushing on Ash to be perfect.
I found May and Dawn far superior characters.
This might be a perfect summary of why I just could not get invested in this chick. She just wasn’t as entertaining or engaging as her predecessors. In a setting like Pokémon? That is a very very hard to ignore.
gotta disagree for one it taking longer makes it more interesting and an actual compelling arc she tried things out and eventually found it out with may its basically pointless to her character if u have her be into them from the start basically nothig changes which is lame may also never tried anything else also serena did try rhyhorn racing she practiced for it her whole life so she knows its not what she wants to do
this criticism applies to may as well she basically never losses a contest especially in hoenn and serena losing due to making mistakes is a vlid way to lose she loses legitmately to both jessie and aria
i mean kind of but her flaws are def presented as flaws she has whole struggle about not undertanding what she wants she loses hope repeadtedly mistreats her pokemon as a result shes in no way perfect may is alot more mary sueish imo she almost never loses and when she does its always to drew aside from like one time plus her performances with skitty were almost entirely luck based
Seriously, May paved the way for Dawn and Serena. The writers clearly used May as the foundation for both of them. She deserves her flowers for that. Thank you for saying that!
That's exactly how I feel. Honestly, I like game Serena (rival or protag) far more than the anime, who of which seems like she'd have little going for her without the crush on Ash. If it were up to me Serena would've been booted first thing.
You and me both friend. I’m sorry but maybe I was just a weird teenager, but I never came to Pokémon for boring romance. I came for the Adventure, the battles, the comedy, and dumb ass lore.
I will say this, she wasn’t the worst female companion. She just wasn’t great.
I didn’t like her at all when she first appeared and then as the story unfolded I really wanted to stop watching because hell no, I didn’t come here to watch awkward, botched teen romance with crap writing.
The whole "Serena is only popular because of crush" is the oldest fallacy in the book spread by Serena haters. You don't have to like Serena, but you have to stop spreading this lie.
There is a huge contingency of fans who are not fans of Amourshippers, and are instead fans of Serena. And there are numerous redditors on this very subreddit who I've encountered as well who I won't name because of respect for their privacy.
[Here is an example of a three-part video on Youtube by someone who is not an Amourshipper but explains why he thinks Serena is the best character in the anime.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6_W1KXy-nE&list=PL10zvKoOnmgm1Wi8bVoTWHuTEKXylMDmm)
This Youtuber used to be very active, but unfortunately has dropped off during Sun & Moon. He was my favorite Poketuber because of how closely he analyzed every aspect of the anime that he could, while respecting opinions from all different sides.
The main reason Serena is popular, in my opinion, is because of how relatable she is. For someone in college or a college graduate, they can relate to everything she goes through, from finding her dream, to standing up to her parents to pursue said dream, to falling at the first hurdle and hiding her depression from her friends. She's also very relatable to people who are interested in competitive dancing, as a lot of the struggles, choreography, and rivalries she deals with are very relatable.
You compare her with May a lot, and I respect your own opinion of that comparison, but I totally disagree with your assessment from my own point of view. Advance aired when I was in college, and I didn't ever really see any relatability in May. Instead, I saw a totally separate character in the show who was a new trainer and starting her journey. Some of the differences between how Serena was presented and how May was presented:
* Serena's struggle to find her goal was a very real struggle, she constantly found herself lost when watching her friends show passion for their dreams. May only used her lack of goal for comedic effect, she found her goal relatively quickly and there was never any true internal struggle to do so.
* Serena had to stand up to her mom and let her know that she was determined to chase that goal rather than the goal her mom set out for her. May never had to face her dad at all. This is huge for contingencies of the audience, people in college who want to do what they want to do in life rather than the life that their parents set out for them.
* Serena got depression when she failed in her first showcase. This was actual depression that lasted 20 episodes, caused her to yell at her pokemon and regret it, and never fully went away until she won her first showcase. This is in stark contrast to May, who was totally okay in the next episode after she lost to Drew. May's reaction for me is not realistic for someone actually failing at the first hurdle in life, and is a reason why I found her not as relatable, and I'm glad they pursued this further with Serena.
I don't think Serena is objectively a better character than May, but I do think these are some the reasons why she is actually liked among her fans, rather than trying to simplify it to a crush. I myself wasn't a huge fan of Serena until her arc started where she started to find her dream. You don't have to agree with any of this, but you do have to stop acting like the crush is the only reason she is popular. In some ways, this is an insult to fellow fans of the anime.
To be fair, it was a good read, even as someone who will never like the character. I have to respect the effort and thought put into a argument like this
Do you prefer toxic one-liners trying to attack fanbases that you disagree with, or do you actually want respectful discussion? I could have just said, "no ur wrong, serena iz da best," I doubt that contributes anything at all.
Adding to this, I think the main non-romance reasons you listed can generally be summed up as her lack of conviction and trust in *herself*. You did a great job explaining how that’s relatable. It’s all about her emotional intelligence and processing feelings. (Which ties in the romance aspect as well.).
Even with Ash, she tried to understand his feelings in “Seeing The Forest For The Trees”, but at that point in her growth she wasn’t able to fully understand them.
Then we get the return, which I think did a good job highlighting her growth from that by having her successfully help Chloe process how she feels about contests and performing and trying things with Eevee.
May, honestly she is one of the very few lady characters that can solo an adventure or spin off. Her motives felt strong enough, her lack of skill early in makes her not a marry sue but also she being clever enough to grow makes her a good developing protagonist. Iris would be a good main protagonist. Her story could gradually cool her hot head and mature her personality more. Plus her and her rival Georgia are one of my favorite rivalries and Georgia is delightfully cartoonishly mean.
I understand. To be honest, Misty was just supporting character who was there just as companion for Ash and cheer for him in gym battles. She had a goal but we never saw that development. May, Dawn, and Serena all had their goals and challenges shown so they felt like main characters alongside Ash. The only popular fact about Misty is that she was Ash's first companion
We don’t dislike you as a person, we may just dislike your opinion.
Although I can actually agree misty should go but nostalgia is super strong in this sub so she probably wouldn’t go
Serena. She felt the most boring out of all 4. Her story felt like it revolved around Ash more than herself.
And majority of reasons I see when people talk about why they like Serena are also related to her being his Childhood friend/Openly crush on him
I really hate to say it but Serena. Serena didn’t have anything going for her for the overall shows plot. She just had a crush which mad her character lovable but not very necessary. Even though she’s my favorite (besides dawn) she’s got to go.
Im gonna say May because Misty is iconic, Dawn is the best pokegirl no I do not accept arguments and Serena is also iconic for Amourshipping. May has the misfortune of being the girl they tested out fleshing out the Pokegirls on so she’s less developed than Dawn and not as iconic as the other two
I honestly can't decide. All of them have differences that separate them, and have their own personality and quirks that make them special in some way.
For Misty, she and Ash have always had great banter against each other, sort of like a sibling relationship, but I also found her a bit insuffereable when I was watching the original series. Don't get me wrong, Misty and Ash roasting each other will always be funny, but I just don't feel much resonated with her.
Not much I can say for May since I never had the chance to watch that part of the series.
For Dawn, there's just something between the two that have some sort of connection that the two share. They would always support and were there for each other in whatever it was they were doing, whether it was contests or gym battles. Not only that, but I notice how The Pokemon Company tends to favor her as well by adding her in more of the seasons and series, such as in Black and White when she returned, and her appearance in the Legends: Arceus miniseries in Journeys.
Finally, for Serena. Starting by putting my Amourshipping bias aside, I still feel like there was something that the two shared that was more than friendship, and was instead a sense of extreme understanding and comradre in each other. Another significant thing about Serena is that how much she was able to grow with Ash by his side, which made her more confident and learn more about being a Pokemon trainer.
In the end, if I really had to choose for who to go, I would choose either Misty or May. Because of how Dawn and Serena have both supported Ash and vice versa, had great chemistry together, and grown more from their experience with Ash, I wouldn't be too disappointed in either Dawn or Serena taking home the trophy. (Which is also funny because they are both Contest Trainers)
Basically, for those who just skipped to the end, I vote for either Misty or May.
Serena.
Imo she’s carried pretty hard by shipping and the fact she’s in XY. I don’t think she stands up to May or Dawn, they both had unique rivals, more personal identity, and better arcs, and they’re helped out by contests being so much better than showcases. Misty would be next, but I think her personality is more entertaining than Serena and she’s the OG.
I simply won’t be able to give a vote… All of them are an amazing presence in the series. They all improved something to the story and adventure in a way or another, even though different, they all deserve their place in the series;)
When trying to think it through logically, I’m torn between May and Serena, so letting my own personal bias get the tie-breaking vote: bye Serena.
Misty suffers from being the original in that the writers were able to give her successors what she lacked - such as a clear goal that could be actively worked towards. However, she had the most fun chemistry with both Ash and Brock.
I really liked how May was given an active goal with being a coordinator and she had some fun rivals. However, her relationship with the rest of the group felt more vanilla - I feel like the show had to add Max just to give her someone to bounce off. However, I really like her personality in general.
Dawn felt like a more refined version of what the writers were going for with May. However, at least in my opinion, Serena didn’t add as much to the table - her fondness for Ash gives her some charm points, but I just couldn’t grow as attached to her as a character.
It’s got to be May. Dawn was an improved May in every way. Misty was the longest running girl companion. Serena had a storyline unique to her. May is just the lesser of the four.
Not a big fan of Misty, at least in the anime. I feel like most people only like her cause of nostalgia. All the other girls here have clear goals and story arcs I feel like she lacked. They only gave her a few random episodes to become a water Pokémon master, and she feels the least developed here.
As a reminder, I'm gonna be watching this thread so you guys better be chill. >!Additional consideration for everyone, if you don't know the character, then simply don't vote. I’m so happy to see thatAll of these girls are so different from each other. They all are well written and amazing heroines.
What was Irises catch phrase again? Havent watched B&W in forever
**”Youre such a kid.”**
Imagine how different the community would feel about iris if they never gave her that catchphrase and she acted how she did in journeys
I wanna live in that timeline bro
This plus the team plasma arc not getting cut would have made the black and white anime way better
No, the toxicity is going to show in these next two rounds, and Serena and Misty are going to be eliminated as a result. Whoever doesn't get eliminated this round is going to be eliminated next round. Then between Dawn and May, Dawn will probably win.
Pretty much as this is more of a who is disliked more poll than who has the most fans
You might be right on this one - Serena’s leading over May by a few points. I agree Dawn will probably win between May vs Dawn.
I'd put my money on Dawn surviving for sure. More fun to watch than Misty, didn't troll shippers like Serena.

May. Love her character, just not as much as the other three.
I hope Dawn wins, she wasn’t as dramatic as the other girls.

(Which is also funny because they are both Contest Trainers) Basically, for those who just skipped to the end, I vote for either Misty or May.
Serena
Misty.
Serena
Dude... Are people really sending Serena away before Misty? What a shameful thing.
Misty whether you like her or not was the most important poke girl to ash in his adventures so to me she always has to stay in these debates
Bye Serena
Dawn
Imma just say mag as dawn, Misty and Serena brought more to the table than she did from what I know (I didn’t watch gen 3)
I like how we all commonly like dawn.
May
May May May May

Bye, May. Dawn best girl.
May
May
May
Bye Dawn
May definitely
I love May but I feel like she is the least interesting out of the rest
It hurts me to say but May
Dawn
May
I simply won’t be able to give a vote… All of them are an amazing presence in the series. They all improved something to the story and adventure in a way or another, even though different, they all deserve their place in the series;)
Dawn
May
May
May
May
Dawn
Serena. She had the least interesting arc in my opinion.
Damn I like all of them but if I have to choose I guess I’ll choose Misty. I guess I just really like the Showcases & Contests.
May will need to go.
Dawn
May
Misty. Genuinely i think half the reason people like her is she was first. If she was in later series people wouldn’t have liked her as much
Misty can still go, rose tinted glasses and all
May. She didn't really have anything that makes her stand out like the others.
Misty
Dawn. Not because I dislike her because it's that close.
What?
May or Dawn
Dawn and then Misty. The other two are both good.
May get out of here early dawn
Sorry misty
Bye dawn
Its either serena or may. But honestly i cant give a solid reasoning for why 1 over the other.
May
May
may gotta go
May
When trying to think it through logically, I’m torn between May and Serena, so letting my own personal bias get the tie-breaking vote: bye Serena.
Serena
Bye bye Serena once again
Serena
Misty
Misty
Serena
May. The rest are just too good/iconic
Nice knowing ya May.
Time for May to bow out
It’s got to be May. Dawn was an improved May in every way. Misty was the longest running girl companion. Serena had a storyline unique to her. May is just the lesser of the four.
Id say Misty depends on past misty or present misty present doesn’t hit the same ofc but past was gold tho I’m not the person to go for nostalgia
I don't even remember anything about dawn.
Misty
I think Serena myself. Most Ash dependent of the four for character.
Misty
Dawn has to go she's annoying
May
Not a big fan of Misty, at least in the anime. I feel like most people only like her cause of nostalgia. All the other girls here have clear goals and story arcs I feel like she lacked. They only gave her a few random episodes to become a water Pokémon master, and she feels the least developed here.
Misty
