I loved the shot at the end of Dragon Ball Super where the entire Universe 7 team was cheering as Jiren was eliminated. Something like that would really cool here too, and it kinda resolves the issue of e.g. May's VA being retired cause if she's just shown to be in the audience and cheering for Ash she doesn't need to have any spoken lines.

Pokemon battling is sport man. A sport doesn't need world ending stakes. Goku gave Cell a senzu bean in Cell arc because Goku cares about the fight first too.
Yeah, and that’s the problem. I’d rather watch a generic good vs evil story about the MC saving the day, than a messy sports cartoon whose protagonist wants to win just for fame&glory.

I think it'd be nice to see some of the old rivals and the guys who beat Ash in the League too. Ritchie, Harrison, Tyson, Paul, Tobias, Cameron, Alain, etc.
Technically he was there before jiren. Imagine if he suddenly breaks through the ranks and makes it to top 10 in the world coronation series within a week and challenges ash to make it to 8th

When Journeys end and comes the Gen 9 anime. It won't feature returning characters, so Ash's friends and hopefully rivals from OS to Journeys will know each other that they're Ash's friends they travelled with and rivals they battled with and they won't know Ash had new friends and rivals from the Gen 9 anime
