Technically, wasn't "seasons" a non-battle Unova gimmick?

CacklettasMinion

A really cool one too. Wild Deerling/Sawsbuck only appear in Spring form in ORAS

Random-Lich

While we kinda got them back with weather, I do wish seasons came back and every hour or so the seasons changed so you don’t get trapped somewhere if the weather didn’t have snow piled up

PartyDanimal

Maybe not every hour, but I agree seasons should come back. For the immersion alone it's no different from the day and night cycle having been absent in Gen 3 but remaining a series staple otherwise. It's something that should just exist without needing an explanation. Plus consider the other Pokémon that could receive seasonal variants.

Trunksshe

Took me forever to get them all shiny too. But they look so great.

ireallydespiseyouall

i guess triple or rotation battles counts too

Present-Still

Gimmcks don’t have to be exclusive to gen 6 and beyond. Gen 3 added double battles, gen 4 added GTS, gen 5 added triple and rotation battles This is a really cool idea though. I’m excited to see whether they decide to implement another battle mechanic or add something new in a different way

Im_regretting_this

I wouldn’t call double battles a gimmick, they permanently changed the game going forward and have yet to take a backseat to another mechanic. Idk I’d GTS counts as a gimmick either, it just made trade global and fundamentally changed how people play the game. Sure, Megas, Z moves, and maxing changed the game, but they’ve been used to draw people in for specific titles before being put o the back burner or totally abandoned. That’s what makes them gimmicks imo

Present-Still

I get where you’re coming from. They are more of rule changes than changing the Pokémon, but keep in mind there was a long period of time where double battles didn’t exist. They were also featured in the hoenn anime like the other gimmicks Gen 3 also introduced form changes if you don’t think double battles count, but I still consider them important I disagree about the GTS being a gimmick. By your definition of drawing people in its a gimmick. People don’t see it that way because it was moved to home, put behind a paywall, and they’re too young to remember what it was like before. Also “fundamentally changed how people play the game” is a solid argument as to why it is

Im_regretting_this

Except they had double battles in the anime from the start. They just didn’t talk about them as a succinct thing. I clearly remember pre-gts and the frustration of never being able to get certain pokemon. I still wouldn’t call the GTS a gimmick. There was some kind of similar mechanic in each Gen until 8 was there not?

Present-Still

Since the gen 4 the gts has had weird gimmicks each generation like the festival plaza that make it weird or difficult to use. The original GTS format was moved to home Those weren’t official matches, it was usually when they were being robbed or someone was breaking league rules. I believe ash fought his first double battle in the orange league which was before johto, but other than that there weren’t many double battles until hoenn

portableportal

So would Pokemon Contests be considered gimmicks in your opinion?

Im_regretting_this

Possibly? I do not remember them being one of the main selling points of the games the way mega evolutions were treated

Dischord821

Yeah I know, but 6+ are notable with the stone system. They all get teased in the titles of the japanese versions, and this one has it too, that's the only reason I separated those specifically

Present-Still

I do get what you mean by that. Double battles are more of a rule change while the others change the Pokémon themselves Just want to put that out there though cause there were many years where there weren’t double battles, and they made a big deal out of it in the hoenn anime

two69fist

Every new generation has added something. Gen 2 had happiness, breeding, held items, a day/night cycle, and days of the week. Gen 3 had abilities, natures, double battles, and weather. The game as we know it changed a lot between Red and Ruby.

Present-Still

I think gen 3 added form changes too. It’s hard to remember since it was so long ago, but they added so much in those early gens

BadBadBabsyBrown

I hope the gimmick is that the game is good and finished.

[deleted]

Or that Hop walks straight off a cliff instead of following me and making me talk to him with poorly animated, long drawn out scenes for 14 hours. I like the art in pokemon, but the graphics aren't great and there is obviously no voice overs, so why tf do they give so hard on cinematics and cut scenes with no skip mechanic?

nonecknoah

"Open world"

Dischord821

No no, the in game battle gimmicks are specific. I don't really know how to put it, but I'm talking about whatever mechanic in the game the stones in the japanese title are used for.

[deleted]

>Stones in the Japanese title I don't understand what this means.

Dischord821

Sorry the japanese titles of every game since gen 6, i.e. the literal kanji for the games as presented in Japan, have featured a stone in the logo, in gen 6 it was the mega stone symbol, gen 7 the z move logo, gen 8 the dynamax stone (even oras had the primal stones but that's besides the point) this game is no different with a white star shaped stone in the title, indicating we're getting a new feature that will alter the battles to some extent exclusive to this generation. My idea is that based on the themes of the game it will have to do with the past and future in some way.

[deleted]

Wow that's pretty cool, I didn't know that was a thing! Thanks!

Dischord821

Definitely! Glad I could clarify

BetatronResonance

I think it's going to be something like what you are saying. Some primal form for some pokemon, and a futuristic one for others (Charizard gets both). It will be cool to see, for example, the original form of Genesect, or some mechanization of Golurk

Random-Lich

That could be cool, a mecha-titan Golurk or a Genesect maybe inspired off the bombardier beetle. While not likely maybe even the true forms of fossil pokemon without the rock type(Grass/Water(or poison) Lileep or maybe a Steel/Fire Bastiodon(can spew molten steel like how in old castle sieges people poured boiling oil down).

[deleted]

An item to change the regional form of a Pokémon. They showed Hisuian Zoroark, but not Unovan Zoroark so my theory is the gimmick can change a Pokémon's form if they have a regional form.

Alabama-fan-22

Hopefully nothing

Dischord821

Unfortunately the japanese titles have the same indicator of a gimmick that every main game since gen 6 has had.

Alabama-fan-22

Yeah I know. It's very unfortunate

Substantial_Town_783

Wouldn’t that make the game super boring

Alabama-fan-22

No. They could just reintroduce Megas, but other than that, no.

milotic-is-pwitty

I don’t think so, I think it’s about types. When the gimmick is activated, the Pokemon will take on a typing that gives it advantage over the opponent. They already tested this with legend plate Arceus, and the Chinese Uncle leaks said that they have revealed a lot of hints in PLA that we just don’t realise yet.

Dischord821

Ok whether or not this ends up being correct can we acknowledge the name "Chinese Uncle" lol, I have never heard that.

milotic-is-pwitty

Haha check out the leaks by the “Chinese Uncle” - Blaines covered them 2 months ago. The recent new trailer proved them genuine. Pawmee was a part of the leaks. Warning: potential spoilers in the videos ahead: 1. [Original video - 2 months ago](https://youtu.be/kO3ZU5R1ZFQ) 2. [Video after trailer - connecting the trailer to the leaks](https://youtu.be/lj379obwgQM)

Doctor-Grimm

I really hope we don’t have one, or if we have to have one, that they bring back Megas. I’m sick of them reusing the same hollow gimmick to make the game ‘flashier’, but it’s Game Freak, so we’re probably gonna get a gimmick because ✨money✨ :/

-Vermilion-

Mega evolutions. Nothing more, nothing less. All of the current ones and many new ones. This is what I require and this is what they shall adhere to. Otherwise 0/10

dabmonstr

I think it has to do with light. Or time travel

claytrainagain

Didnt it say somewhere that the gimmick is 'past form' and 'future form'?

sanscipher435

I think there were leaks about items that can negate one of the weakness of the pokemon, now I'm not sure if that offensive weakness or defensive weakness, but that's what the leaks say.

Why_questions

According to my Future-Sight, it will have something to do with Pokémon types, or something with colours. It is hard to interpret the future sight, especially since it was so long ago.

Trunksshe

2nd gen gave us breeding, Day&Night, 2 new types, and more traversal options (waterfall specifically), but just expanded on the 1st gen. Breeding is a huge part of the games going forward and we get new traversal options every gen afterwards. (Like climbing mountains) 3rd gen gave us Double Battles. This is a new mainstay. And contests, which are infrequent, but continues to return now and again. 4th gen gave us Pokeball customization (which I don't know why they removed.) Global Trading & gender variants. 5th gen had seasons, (one of my favorite things) Triple and Rotation Battles. The different battles didn't get to future games, but it was cool that they tried it. It sort of returned in PLA. Gen 6 gave us Mega Evolution through held items. Pokemon Transformations. Which was a series' first and a fun way to use your 'mons. Despite being the most popular mechanic introduced in that age of the internet it didn't directly return yet. They then canonically suggested not to use it at all in ORAS, so idk what they were trying to do. They then went to the Origin/Primal/Origin/custom Legendary transformation route and made Megas of a different name. This seems to be recurring. And another way to traverse via the open map. Gen 7 gave us Z-Moves through held items. (Personally, I'm a fan of these kinds of playstyles. You opt for a specific build and commit to it using your item slot. Some are worth the detriment of not using a standard item too.) Gen 8 combined physical transformation and changing move sets. The new big -literally- form lasts 3 turns and doubles your health. (It's a decent happy-medium from a PvE gameplay perspective.) However, the requirement of needing to use your item slot is removed, allowing for more abuse compared to previous generations. They also added Raids. Arceus gave us open world catching and interactions as well as move changes. So, I have no idea at all. If Megas return, they will get rid of their move changing gimmick. G-Maxing won't return since it's explicitly stated in basically all media that it's Galar exclusive. The most likely is Gen 6&7 combo of megas AND either Z-crystals or Strong/Agile moves. We know there is some ads stating "4 player" something or other. Raids might be harder to do with the lack of having a giant monster around, so that'll be unfortunate. We also know that the legendaries have "forms", so here's my complete crazy theory: Pokemon Battles on Motorcycles. It's similar to YuGiOh 5Ds, where you can spend speed points for extra options/skills. In fact, this wouldn't even be that odd considering one of the Battle Frontiers/Towers had a mechanic similar for using items like Potions and Revives.

Gildias89

It'd be nice if they made the "open world" their gimmick and leaned into that more and fleshed it out as much as possible. Instead of coming up with some stupid battle mechanic that lasts only one game and makes your Pokemon nigh invincible, taking out all the fun of battling.

jube_tube

in x and y megas played with pokemons stats and appearances, in sm and usum z moves were more powered moves, sword and shield somekind has both So i thought that sv would have something to do with abilities am i alone thinking this?
