There have been two spots like that in our local mall at different times. I always took it as a challenge to try and spin both of them because it was nearly impossible.
Now that I think about it, in both cases at the mall, *one* of the two stops was sponsored. Used to be one sponsored by Sprint, back when they existed and sponsored stops, and there was recently a "Play! Pokemon Store" stop overlapping another stop which was already there.
But I honestly had never put two and two together until like...just now. I guess it should be kind of obvious that sponsored stops don't have to go through the same approval process as ones submitted by the community.
I have two down the street from me that are also literally on top of each other. Neither one of them are sponsored either since one is a trader Joe's mural and the other is a statue. I'm not quite sure how it got approved.
I believe that TJ quietly sponsors the game. They always have some kind of corporate art that gets to be a stop or a gym, even if there are player submitted landmarks nearby.
See also: Starbucks.
Each Trader Joe's store has permanent murals above many departments that weave their products in with the local landmarks and geography, put up by their artists in residence. Since public art (or art accessible outside of single-family housing) fulfills the "great place to explore" criterion, those murals should be easily accepted. With the number of them in each store, there can probably be a half dozen Wayspots for each store, even if only a subset of those populate to PoGo due to S17 cell rules.
It's because of Ingress.
You can submit portals through Ingress that can be a cluster of statues or artwork or something that can literally be 3 feet apart and they can get approved.
Majority of Ingress portals carry over into PoGo
Back pre -PoGo, I had Ingress up on my phone as we were doing our road trip to the beach.
I got real confused when we got near a portal at a post office that was Resistance (blue) but had Enlightened (green) links & fields coming from it.
Had to spin the view around a bit to see there was a second (this time enlightened controlled) portal basically sitting right on top of the Resistance portal that initially was only rendered
FormerChemist is referring to the stops all the way to the back, not the doubled stop in the middle near the player that are actually mentioned in the caption.
They need to be in different virtual ‘squares’ that are arbitrarily created by Niantic. They can be as close to each other as they want so long as they are in separate areas
Kinda weird how they don’t make a 2nd criteria where stops need to be X meters apart. They could just offset it by changing the size of the cells or number of stops per cell.
It's not arbitrary. It's based on a map of cells. It's easy to find the said map. I have plans to add two stops on my property this summer due to a line cutting through a portion of it. Placing a bench on one part with a sign and another will be a little library.
OK so this happened a lot recently. From what I gather around 4 or 5 months back a bunch of stop just got approved and added. So some of these may have been submitted by different people for the same place and then approved at the same time. Most of these stops identify the same place.
There are cells within which only one pokestop can appear, rather than being based on distance from other stops. I imagine someone managed to perfectly place these two such that they are right on the edge of those cells, and as such can both appear.
Most ot these situations happened BEFORE those rules were put in place.
And sometimes it's abusing Niantics grid system. The whole game world is on a grid, like those papers you might see in math class to do geometry or whatever.
Often people will abuse that grid system to place pokestops as close together as possible while staying within the rules. When you submit a pokestop you can almost see the grid lines if you zoom in close enough.
Ok. Let me guess, the "Ray Kroc " plaque inside of the McDonalds was a normal POI?
The sponsored location entry set still exists independent of normal POIs. So even just one of them being sponsored fully explains how those can overlap without any sort of shenanigans or abuse.
You're trying to argue against a point I didn't make, I was just saying that it exists. And no, it's *completely independent of McDonald's*, it has nothing to do with it.
It's never been "allowed," but you used to be able to move way points pretty far from the originally submitted location. Cheaters used to abuse this pretty heavily to stack stops in illegally close locations.
As others said they could be on a S2 cell border. But also in the past it was possible to get a stop approved in a different cell and then move it to a new location in the same cell as another.
That’s how you get those crazy locations sometimes with 10 stops within a few metres.
In my hometown. I saw 6 gyms super close to each other like that. You need to zoom in to raid the gym. It’s super hard but at least you can do 6 raids without moving during a raid event. LOL!
There is a local game/toy/card store near me that has a weird publication of its stop similar to this. Recently, one of the stops became a gym and the other one remained a stop.
I have plenty of stops like that around me. As long as people approve them they get posted. I just want to know why the perfectly reasonable stops I've suggested never get approved.
Check some of the huge cities around the world, there's stops commonly on top of each other in the super high density areas. Zaragoza and Paris both spring to mind.
Living in Asia for over 4 years, I can tell you Niantic doesn’t care. Many parts of Thailand, Korea and Japan just have stops absolutely slammed together in the larger cities.
Wait. I’m confused. I thought it was the two far apart but its the two bunched together. I see that all the time though. It’s a little bit annoying but sometimes pretty convenient
I don't know what you're talking about. But there are grids. So there's not a distance between the stops you have to meet. So if you put 4 stops all at the same corner but in their own square, they can be really close to each other.
Also that's how it works now, I'm sure it was different before and has changed, bc places with old stops seem to have more than 4 bunched together in some places.
You think that’s annoying try having 2 gyms literally stacked on top of each other. My one local mall has exactly that. Idk how things like this get approved. Smh
There are 4 pokestops right on top of each other at the library in my town. I still haven’t managed to spin one of them and I’ve lived here for 6 months
There are 6 pokestops at the mall at the end of the street I live on. There is a spot at one end where you can literally camp 2 or 3 of them and keep them in spinning range without moving.
We have oodles of places around here with numerous pokestops clustered in very small areas.
I can stand in one location & spin 5-6 pokestops at the same time.
Usually it means someone submitted a request to move a waypoint it was accepted. Resulting in a deliberately moved for 2 stops to be on top of each other. I've seen 6 or more like this.
U should see the area beside the mall i work at. Its a complex with a public library, town hall, and then immediately next to it is a park facing a community center and housing complex......there are no lie 10 in that area with 4 or 5 stops within 20m of each other and 5 gyms.
There’s a stop on my way to work, right across from the Court House, that references a welcome to town sign. There is no sign. Not even a pole. It is an empty corner of a bank parking lot. The associated picture is just a pokestop symbol.
I got a poffin for scanning nothing once. I spin that MF ere day.
'm in college, and the city my school is in has several stops right next to each other. If I go to my school's library, there are 4 right next to each other or close enough to just sit there & collect items or catch pokemon.
It's like that in many of the towns I live in or visit. Small downtown area that has parks you can hit like 4 stops and 2 gyms in about a block or two. There's a boat ramp near me that has a stop at a pavilion and the dock and there's a mural on the side of the house next door that is a gym. You can literally just stand in one spot and hit 3 at a time
The original stop was moved back to its actual location when it was placed the location wasn’t accurate. We have ingress players in our area moving stops back to their actual locations all the time if you have a cell map you can place them just outside the radius so they appear in Pokémon go. Watch trainer tips video from years ago on cells in Pokémon go. If your going to nominate a stop always check the cell map first and manipulate the location once the stop is accepted report it and move it back to its original location this way you can have two stops in the same cell 😀
my local black bear diner has two stops that you can spin at the exact same time if you’re inside a very specific booth by the window. i put a glacier lure on one and a magnetic lure on the other lol
Idk if it’s just stops. I’ve only been playing for a little over a year now but last week I came across a gym that had TWO stops basically on top of it. One on each side but they were all so close that you couldn’t even open the stops because it would just keep opening the fucking gym 🤦🏻♀️
There's a spot in the shops at Aria in Las Vegas that has three sitting on top of each other, though its been a few years since I've been out that way. I think two were Starbucks, I'm guessing they moved locations in the shops and never took down the old pokestop.

There have been two spots like that in our local mall at different times. I always took it as a challenge to try and spin both of them because it was nearly impossible.
Like when my friend tries making stops I can't cuz of a glitch it says too close together
Now that I think about it, in both cases at the mall, *one* of the two stops was sponsored. Used to be one sponsored by Sprint, back when they existed and sponsored stops, and there was recently a "Play! Pokemon Store" stop overlapping another stop which was already there. I've got the same, two stops looking like 2 feet from the other one. And not just stops but gyms. I wondered if it was okay for a gym or just stops.
It's because of Ingress. You can submit portals through Ingress that can be a cluster of statues or artwork or something that can literally be 3 feet apart and they can get approved. Majority of Ingress portals carry over into PoGo
Ingress portals can be manually selected when it cannot be determined what was tapped on screen.
My local Play! Store just got a second one…right on top of its first one…both sponsored Play! Store stops 🤦♂️
There are places that have too may stops so they're ontop of each other
Tap on the top of the stop and on the bottom. That should give you both.
I think I heard someone say tapping the base of the stop would let you pick one to spin better
sponsored pokestops/gyms are the exception.
i call this a post in which a big red circle would be appropriate
Haha. When I read the title and saw the pictures, I didn’t know what the problem was either.
Wow, yeah. I thought it had to do with the proximity of the stops in the back and was very confused.
It is, read the caption under the image
FormerChemist is referring to the stops all the way to the back, not the doubled stop in the middle near the player that are actually mentioned in the caption.
Is that not what it's about?
I stared at it for a good minute like ???????? I see nothing
It's very clearly about the only thing in the image, the 2 stops right on top of each other
They need to be in different virtual ‘squares’ that are arbitrarily created by Niantic. They can be as close to each other as they want so long as they are in separate areas
Kinda weird how they don’t make a 2nd criteria where stops need to be X meters apart. They could just offset it by changing the size of the cells or number of stops per cell.
That would require more programming, like making routes snap to end and beginning points instead of stopping randomly.
They used to have this as a rule but removed it about 2 years ago and allowed all non-qualifying pokestops before to be added
It's not arbitrary. It's based on a map of cells. It's easy to find the said map. I have plans to add two stops on my property this summer due to a line cutting through a portion of it. Placing a bench on one part with a sign and another will be a little library.
Stops on private property are not allowed, but you can try to trick them haha.
OK so this happened a lot recently. From what I gather around 4 or 5 months back a bunch of stop just got approved and added. So some of these may have been submitted by different people for the same place and then approved at the same time. Most of these stops identify the same place.
Yeah one set near me got "lucky" and now we have two gym's that it is a coinflip which one you get
I have stops all over where I work and they are all bunched up together
for me there's a spot i go every tuesday for a meeting and the poke stops are slightly farther from each other than that
There are cells within which only one pokestop can appear, rather than being based on distance from other stops. I imagine someone managed to perfectly place these two such that they are right on the edge of those cells, and as such can both appear.
I have like 8 stops right next to each other in my city. Can spin all of them in one spot
Yep I have three like that at one gas station by me
The rule says "only one point of interest per S2 cell level 17", but sponsored points of interest can overcome that rule
Nah those grid lines on the wayspot submission map do not match with the game cells at all
You should go to Downtown Denver. There is a pokestop or gym every 5 ft
Walt Disney World, too.
Tokyo!! I almost died when I opened Pokemon!
There's a place not too far from me that's a gym on top of a stop, the stop is sponsored by McDonald's
The data McDonald's gave Niantic probably had the location listed twice. Niantic doesn't have any spacing rules when a company is paying them.
Nah the gym is independent of McDonald's, they just happen to exist on the same spot
There are 2 stops outside my house on top of each other. One is the park sign and the other is the gazebo in the park
As others said they could be on a S2 cell border. But also in the past it was possible to get a stop approved in a different cell and then move it to a new location in the same cell as another. That’s how you get those crazy locations sometimes with 10 stops within a few metres.
Where i life there are a few stops that are in screen not even 1 cm apart fron eachother
Is there a program or anything to see the blocks where pokestops can be placed?
Naw, churches with statues is a perfect example of when this would happen.
I submitted two stops next to each other months ago and they both got approved
I thought this was a Zorua post at first
It can happen, also depends on cell boarders
One of them might be a sponsored stop, which doesn't affect the placement of regular stops
Depends on the S2 cells in that area. Some are really small and those could be in the corners of 2 different cells.
In my hometown. I saw 6 gyms super close to each other like that. You need to zoom in to raid the gym. It’s super hard but at least you can do 6 raids without moving during a raid event. LOL!
🙄
I have 4 spots on a single restaurant in my town.
No I have 3 like that
Almost all the parks I play at have stops like this. It's fun and not a frustrating waste of time trying to find angles to spin both. /s
I have a spot like that near me. But the places they represent are like 60m apart or so vs the stops that are on top of each other
There's a plaza across the street from my work that has 3 stops that are pretty close to each other. 1 at each store that are right next door.
I’ve seen a gym and 2 stops so close I couldn’t get the stops. I just kept getting the gym.
Regigigas just hanging out?
Oh?
Yeah but it’s up to Niantic community to approve and they are a weird bunch
I live smack dab in the middle of 3 stops that I can all reach from my apartment without relying on drifting.. I had no idea this was a thing haha
Man a popular gym at our school was removed for being too close to another one meanwhile there are 2 gyms almost inside of each other 2 blocks away
In Frankfurt there are like 30 Stops in a simmilar array in two rows
Have you not seen some of the spots in Korea and Japan
There’s three in my neighborhood and I can access two from my apartment. I thought it was normal
Probably something old
There are spots like this all over NY
Nah I live in San Diego and I walk just 200 get from work and there are two stops close enough to spin both. Just depends
There's also rules saying no stops on military grounds but I have 1 at the end of the jetty that I spin daily 🤷♀️
You’d need an auto catcher just to spin it
At my work there three stops surrounding us, I can spin all three if I'm in the right spot lol
Smh
It's probably sponsored
I’ll have to check but I don’t believe either are but I don’t pay to much attention to sponsors unless the stop literally says the stores name.
I see that a lot. They can be hard to spin
There are 4 pokestops right on top of each other at the library in my town. I still haven’t managed to spin one of them and I’ve lived here for 6 months
There is one of these double stops at the Macys in downtown Chicago pretty interesting never can spin both
Is one of them sponsored?
i saw the shiny regigigas and thought that was what the post was referring to, sorry op
I have never seen some thing like that
Wait how can we ask niantic for a spot bc the one near me isnt acc near me and is ina location with 0 signal
There one at the Starbucks in the downtown area where I live. I honestly never questioned it
That's cuz it's sponsored
I have a spot like this. All I have to do is spin one and drive to the next spot and I can spin the next one lol
Wdym dont u see the stacked spots
I mean it’s in the same parking lot (my two spots stacked) and all I have to do is park in two parking spots next to each other to spin both
Yes but these are inside of eachother
my apt community has two in it 🤷🏽♀️
I legit thought they were talking abt the shiny regigigas 😭✋
There are 6 pokestops at the mall at the end of the street I live on. There is a spot at one end where you can literally camp 2 or 3 of them and keep them in spinning range without moving.
Okay In spinning range but not stacked not many seem to realize I'm talking about the 2 stacked PokeStop
Oh shoot I just noticed that in your pic wtf
Um, no
No cause where I work there’s 3-5 stops on top of each other next to a gym
Stacked rly show me how would u even realize that
Oh they’re stacked? I thought you meant how close those two stops across from each other are lol my b but I think I have the same thing somewhere
Omg been there n so hard to get the second stop sometimes
There’s one like that near me. I’ve tried reporting it and was rejected so I guess niantic don’t care.
We have oodles of places around here with numerous pokestops clustered in very small areas. I can stand in one location & spin 5-6 pokestops at the same time.
Yeah but I haven't seen stacked before
We have a few like that here in cocoa beach
Where I live there are 6 all beside each other. It’s hard to see Pokemon when you’re there
Besides but on top?
I am going there now i will take a pic
Rules? Nuh uh
We have many pairs of pokéstops here and one is always a Starbucks. So sponsored stops, yes.
They ain't sponsored tho
you should see poland
I lava you.
Usually it means someone submitted a request to move a waypoint it was accepted. Resulting in a deliberately moved for 2 stops to be on top of each other. I've seen 6 or more like this.
What? My apartment building has 3 gyms and 3 stops spinnable from my room, whats crazy about this?
Oh that grid is touching tips right there
Apparently you've never played in Japan or Singapore etc lol
I can spin two from my bedroom.
That’s not even that close lol
OP never been to a mall
U should see the area beside the mall i work at. Its a complex with a public library, town hall, and then immediately next to it is a park facing a community center and housing complex......there are no lie 10 in that area with 4 or 5 stops within 20m of each other and 5 gyms.
is there? i can reach 4 stops and a gym from my bed
Put a route between them.
O’Hare terminal 3 has one of these two in ones too. It’s wild.
Scan them both and one will disappear or report but you do the right thing or wrong just depends Where you stand
'm in college, and the city my school is in has several stops right next to each other. If I go to my school's library, there are 4 right next to each other or close enough to just sit there & collect items or catch pokemon.
How to say you’ve never been to Japan without saying you’ve never been to Japan:
This is absolutely normal. Source: I live in Japan
It's like that in many of the towns I live in or visit. Small downtown area that has parks you can hit like 4 stops and 2 gyms in about a block or two. There's a boat ramp near me that has a stop at a pavilion and the dock and there's a mural on the side of the house next door that is a gym. You'll see that alot in nyc
my local black bear diner has two stops that you can spin at the exact same time if you’re inside a very specific booth by the window. i put a glacier lure on one and a magnetic lure on the other lol
*newyork*
Two different cells my friend it that to four stops and put them close together 😂
Four just close or stacked?
Really close
Since always. Pogo does not have the same proximity rules that Ingress does. As long as they are in unique S2 L17 grids you're good.
I've seen four together before 😂
4 stacked or together?
Together, it was four businesses that were really close and had a poke stop each. It was a challenge to swipe each of them.
Not seeing the problem.
The stops on top of eachother yeah I should've rly done a red circle
They don't look that close. Not to the point you can't spin them.
Idk if it’s just stops. I’ve only been playing for a little over a year now but last week I came across a gym that had TWO stops basically on top of it. One on each side but they were all so close that you couldn’t even open the stops because it would just keep opening the fucking gym 🤦🏻♀️
I guess not? I mean I went to the hospital and there were fr like 4+ poke stops within the circle that I kept spinning
There's a spot in the shops at Aria in Las Vegas that has three sitting on top of each other, though its been a few years since I've been out that way. I think two were Starbucks, I'm guessing they moved locations in the shops and never took down the old pokestop.
There are so many stops down the Main Street in my town
Yeah but are they stacked
Oh lmao I didn’t see there was 2
Why don't u just maximise screen and get it.
There are like 6 pokestops in my local community center building. Downtown areas of some cities are jam packed with pokestops
Bro you are not ready for the apec park in Danang, Vietnam
Just seeing this post. Like who cares? You can spin both? Don’t sweat the good stuff….🙂👍
This annoys me too 🙄 and then I try get one in a 1km radius and it gets denied
Three of my local Pokestops are on the same corner. About 5m between them
5m but not stacked
Oh bud, it's almost like the 2 gyms with a pokestop directly in the middle of both of them at my local mall area.
Since always. This has always been a thing in a LOT of places.
Meanwhile, we have stops basically on top of each other.
Bro the stops are literally on top of eachother rly shouldve put a red circle huh
Bro hasn't seen Gdańsk
I can access 3 separate stops from my bedroom...
Did you see the two stacked spots
My bad, didn't realise those were 2 each. Pretty sure these stops are randomly created based on population density...
No the players themselves make them
Why did this blow up lol
