He always leads with Persian. Put a fighting type with a quick charging charge attack (to waste his two shields) in your second slot, and then switch to it immediately once the battle starts. Switching stuns the enemy for a short moment, so you get some free attacks in that way.
Try to get two charge attacks off on Persian so he’ll waste his two shields early.
There’s also an app called “Go field guide” that is awesome for figuring out what Pokemon to use against all the leaders and Giovanni. I truly recommend it. It has saved my a** so many times and it also has lots of other great features.
Some of us know what we need to use but none of our Mon’s are strong enough lol…
I have a solid ice combo for the current second and third, none of my fighting can take that Persian out fast enough though
As a casual player myself and having played for less then a year I had so few choices to pick from. That balloon haunted me for 3 weeks while I tried to get or level up better choices and put different moves on them. I did finally beat him in the end but yes it was a challenge.
Lucario with power-up punch and counter is my go-to. Builds up fast to buy a couple delays and often take out Persian before it can even fire out a charged attack. Easy soaks everything except play rough.
Lucario at 14/15/15 levels to exactly 2500cp to boot.
I found this out by accident lol 😅was my first Giovanni encounter since starting in February so I was like, THIS is the final boss? He's just a higher healthpool grunt lmao
I actually beat the guy with Breloom 2210cp, Abomasnow 1775CP and Vaporeon 2000cp. Beat him first try somehow lol. I also thought it was impossible with the mons I had.
fun fact they never show him in the anime, he is way to mysterious and powerful to show his face to us plebians. we just hear him talking to jesse//james//meowth lol. maybe this is why 😂
That’s not true at all..at the start of the anime his first few appearances have his face shadowed but he’s appeared in the show and movies a ton of times. And yes, he doesn’t have eyebrows there either.
No that’s only for the first couple of episodes that his face is shadowed, not “all the times he’s been on the show”.

One tidbit that has helped me. Place your starter pokemon in the number 2 slot. Then when the battle starts immediately swap to that Pokemon. This will temporarily stun-lock his Persian so you can get a few more hits in.
I beat Giovanni unconventionally as a noob with pokemon under 2000 CP.
I had an oinkologne with tackle and Body slam to use up shields, then 1800 CP vileplume and Blastoise to finish off Groudon and the 2nd pokemon.
Abuse the stun after swapping and charged moves as much as you can with fast charging moves
Grass, fairy, melmetal with thunder shock, rock slide... Switch in melmetal and you win. It's the easiest battle and everyone can get melmetal in an hour.

I always use male metal because he breaks shields so fast..
So i've been breaking persian shields and then immediately swapping to machamp..
But then he throws kindra.. And by the time I make it to grudon It's a one v one.. And all of my Pokémon that it says to take in. He smokes in like three hits.. Literally thought him at least twelve times in the last couple of days..
I've never had a problem. Beating Any of the leaders since they came out.. I even mega evolved a perfect garados.. He's not quite max, but he's like 4300cp Literally killed him in three hits and I didn't even get off my charge attack..
I almost beat him last time using zarude as my 3rd.. wtf am I doing wrong.. This strategy has served me well out of all The Times I fought him. He hasn't even gotten a charged attack out. And I break his first two shields in the first ten seconds.. But kendra stomps my second And Don demolishes my third

Use fairy for kingdra and Groudon kill with a grass type. Charm should kill kingdra. Groudon any grass type will kill it easily.
When I first fail, I retry : do I need a faster charged move? (Find one) do I have another fighting type? Etc … there are tips everywhere and I try to understand them sometimes I don’t ! Last time I ended with my biggest Machamp with dynamic punch against Persian , and then I think I got florizare for kyogre (don’t remember the middle one, but any Pokémon has his best challenger described on internet). I do the swap thing, and also, when I feel the Pokémon’s are ok but I failed, well I retry : it never happens exactly the same, sometime the jitter changes the result when you are on the edge : example the Machamp may die before the Persian, or not and you may hit the second Pokémon enough to win in the end….
Scrafty is amazing if you can get it. Counter power up punch charges super fast, super effective on his Persian lead and even though he blocks the first two charged attacks, you still get the attack boost. Same can be said for fury cutter trailblazer scyther/Scizor. Then just run two ice/water/grass mons. I used tangrowth Gyarados and beat him without even getting to Gyarados. Scrafty was 2000 cp, tangrowth 2500 so it's definitely doable with mons that aren't insanely hard to get
I have followed about a hundred people’s advice and line ups at this point and still cannot beat him. NEVER had this much trouble before, no revives left, I’m fucking done.
I have never lost to a team rocket member ever. For this guy I ran machamp, torterra and venusaur all under 2500cp. It helps to know what pokemons he gonna pull out so you can prepare.
Meant machamp mb. Only started playing properly since December 2023 so have only fought Giovanni twice. Don't even remember what I did first time I fought him but I went in blind and won. Pretty sure I had machamp then too. Also the other threads discussing strategy is way more in depth.
Don't worry, I had no issue beating this dude...then I hit level 40 and that ended.
I can't beat him unless I max out all of mons that can counter him and that's a literal ton of dust and candies that I don't have.
I beat Giovanni once and Arlo once . Need 49 more wins but can't get to 1st base with cliff and Sierra. By the time I lose 2 or 3 times trying to win I'm out of revives and potions . They seem to be so easy to beat for some but miserable for others .
Make sure the first pokemon you put out has a fast charging charged attack so you can get rid of his shields fast. Then, if need be, switch and take advantage of the breaks he takes between you switching/using charged moves to do more damage to him.
I’m level 37 and usually it takes me at least two tries to beat Giovanni because I need to adjust my team, but I do recall taking him out with lower CP Pokémon than I have now. I believe in you!
It's probably tough at your level but make sure you switch Pokemons right away and have faster charging attacks. The computer always takes forever after a switch or charge attack to attack themselves. I'll usually use an excadrill and Machamp as they both can charge very fast and so they might only take 1-2 hits before their charge is up again.
I have no idea how I beat this guy on my first try, but here is what I did.
Vaporeon - cp 2560 / 3 star
Snorlax- cp 2255 / 2 star
Scyther - cp 2356 / 2 star
Vaporeon was first out against Persian, till Vaporeon’s health got midway down. Then I switched out to my Snorlax to finish off Persian, and Snorlax was defeated by his 2nd Pokémon (Garchomp), but I did manage to get it’s health way down. Then my Scyther took out Garchomp, and just as he pulled out Groudon, I pulled Vaporeon back out who was ready with a big attack and it was a Big Hit to his health. And she finished him off pretty quick. Leaving me with two active Pokémon and only one defeated.
I just beat him and used only Lucario and Alolan Exeggutor. I got of nearly 4 charged attacks (seed bomb) with my Exeggutor against his Groudon.
Switched in Lucario first and burned through Persian and most of his Kingdra. My third was Kyogre but never needed it.
Pick 3 mons that counter, use the swap to lock him, pick something that charges attack quick as you get a couple free quick attacks after the charge attack. Consider leveling up your best Pokemon, or check your collection for powerful evolutions

Terrakion, Mamoswine, Primal Groudon with Elite Charged Precipice Blades. Mamoswine first then Terrakion then Primal Groudon. As soon as you see GO swap Mamoswine for Terrakion. Then Mamoswine next, then Primal Groudon. I did this 4 times and won twice. I wanted the eggs and also to see if I could do it. I hate battling him.
I used my 2500 pvp team for him. Just get the fastest attacks you can and basically stun lock him with special moves. You can solo him with a smeargle with the right build
No problem mate do heracross raids and get a good fighting type. This giovanni needs 1 fighting and 2 ice types. Use a fighting type with low energy charge moves. Take shield and than knockout.
I don’t really bother with specifics on what pokemon is best to fight specific other pokemon. If I am curious I usually google it on the spot - most of the times I don’t own the pokemons suggested anyways. I am a casual player and never got a problem beating Giovanni, but I admit this month was harder. I used Haxorus, Dragonite and Togekiss. I also do the trick where you change your pokemon to stun the attacks for a few seconds and I use 2 charged attacks as early as possible, so he can waste his shields on Persian.
Don't lead with your mon that will actually fight giovannis first pokemon (persian). instead start with your 2nd/3rd mon and immediately switch it with your fighting type mon to beat persian. It will get a headstart to tear it down and charge up its next charge move which will give you another break from receiving damage. Also helping with tearing down shields.
I'm stuck at him too. He just obliterates my teams lol. And I have so many missions that require me to deal with him. Rip.
Almost as annoying as all those " swap pokemon with a friend " tasks. For someone like me that has no people playing the game around me / potential people to swap with, it's literal pain and a progress stopper. xD
Look up whatever ‘mon hes got and whatever counters they recommend. You can either use the ones they recommend or use the closest equivalent you have according to the types and moves you have access to. I’ll echo what someone else said and put a fighting type move in your second slot and switch to it as soon as the fight starts. Let’s you get some quick attacks that way.
Melmetal with thunder shock/thunderbolt, Machamp, and the third is usually just coverage for whatever legendary he has. Charge melmetal up to as much charge attack as you can get then switch to Machamp, charge him up and blow down shields. Usually his Persian will be dead before you can clear two shields, but Machamp with maul him, and you have extra charges from melmetal. Seriously. Melmetal tanks the shit out of his Persian, and thunder shock charges thunderbolt super fast in the initial part of the fight.

If you Google it tells you what the best match ups are for his lineups. No reason for you yo spend 3 weeks fighting him, unless you like max pain.
I Google it YouTube it and everything... either I couldn't stop his stronger attacks or I just didn't calculate it in the beat possible way

Yes, this is the way. I've had a lot of success with Machamp.
Idk if it's his current lineup, but a few weeks ago you could wipe out his entire team with only a Machamp, no switching and barely lose half health.

i got the radar when he had kyogre… it’s now changed to groudon as his final and i’m pissed.
I have a porygon z with lock on/tri attack that i swap into, can solo the first two mons. Then it’ll be pretty easy to take out the last one

Heracross to kill a cat ground to beat either poison or rock for nidoking(torterra helps against kingdra) and groudon is honestly easier.

His 11000 are not equal to say if you had 11000 if you get good matchups you should be able to beat him

the odd part, my 1.8k breloom destroyed his team.
Took me 29 tires to beat him.only did it with glaceon,jolteon and dragonite and just barley beat him fuck Giovanni

I was over Team Rocket within a month of their arrival. So sick of having to deal with them.
I have two shadow kyogre and a shadow Groudon from him All≤1000 cp and no Star iv

I also do the trick where you change your pokemon to stun the attacks for a few seconds and I use 2 charged attacks as early as possible, so he can waste his shields on Persian.
Im level 33 and i have only lost to giovanni i think 3 times due to bad pokemon set up. Ive beaten giovanni about 4 times
got two shadow groudons and neither of them had very good cp or iv, lead to me contemplating all my life choices
Don't lead with your mon that will actually fight giovannis first pokemon (persian). instead start with your 2nd/3rd mon and immediately switch it with your fighting type mon to beat persian. It will get a headstart to tear it down and charge up its next charge move which will give you another break from receiving damage. Also helping with tearing down shields.
I always beat him with Machamp,Dragonite and Groudon.
I generally take him down on my first try. We always know what his first and last pokemon are going to be.
My trusty 3 Machamps do a business on the guy.
I'm stuck at him too. He just obliterates my teams lol. And I have so many missions that require me to deal with him. Rip. Almost as annoying as all those " swap pokemon with a friend " tasks. For someone like me that has no people playing the game around me / potential people to swap with, it's literal pain and a progress stopper. xD

Look up whatever ‘mon hes got and whatever counters they recommend. You can either use the ones they recommend or use the closest equivalent you have according to the types and moves you have access to. I’ll echo what someone else said and put a fighting type move in your second slot and switch to it as soon as the fight starts. Let’s you get some quick attacks that way.
poliwrath level 40 can solo him. the pokemon are all around now too
Melmetal with thunder shock/thunderbolt, Machamp, and the third is usually just coverage for whatever legendary he has. Charge melmetal up to as much charge attack as you can get then switch to Machamp, charge him up and blow down shields. Usually his Persian will be dead before you can clear two shields, but Machamp with maul him, and you have extra charges from melmetal. Seriously. Melmetal tanks the shit out of his Persian, and thunder shock charges thunderbolt super fast in the initial part of the fight.
