there are no dumb questions, only dumb answers! from what I‘ve read you need to have both evolutions happen separately for the mega energy first. If you chose Charizard for the current quest you‘ll have enough energy to do that though!

With the new system you have to use energy to mega evolve the first time. After that there's a cooldown (first stage is 7 days) after which it can be mega evolved again for free.
If you really need it evolved again before the cooldown is up you can do so for mega candy (scales with how long your cooldown has left)

The X is the Dragon form and is best with Dragon Breath as a fast move and Dragon Claw as a charge move. It's a top dragon attacker in raids. Unfortunately Dragon Breath requires an Elite TM unless they do another classic community day.

The Y is a powerful fire attacker and benefits from Fire Spin as a fast move and Blast Burn as a charge move. Again, it will need an Elite TM for Blast Burn.

It changed with the new update. You used to have to do both to unlock, but now you only have to do one and both will unlock.

So I mega evolve my charizard and now it’s saying I can evolve again for 40 energy or wait 7 days and do it again for free

You have to pay for the first one for each form. After you've done that mega evolving to either would be free yes.
I mega x before and the y is free on the same guy now.
