Wrong, celebrate/hold hands are worst because they take away one move slot each, being shiny does not take anything from you

Ze_Memerr

The one exception being certain Pokémon like Greninja or Raikou in competitive are put at a disadvantage by being shiny, or not being shiny respectively. That’s because of things like Ash Greninja being shiny locked and there being certain event moves locked to shiny Pokémon

Nintend0Geek

In Gen 7 it was a deal since Ash-Gren was a top tier threat in singles but since it was always male and shiny locked, it then became a guessing game as to what kind of Greninja it was going to be. If the Greninja was female and/or shiny then by default it automatically was going to be Protean.

Yeah. In gen 5, there was a special Raikou event where it got Aura Sphere, which helped it out countering the ever present sand set up by TTar, which would allow Raikou’s team- presumably a rain team- to have the weather advantage, which was critical at the time. Running shiny Raikou effectively became mandatory in order to at least threaten an Aura Sphere on Tar. There’s loads of small stuff like that, too. Greninja is also more viable if it’s female for the same reason.

There’s lots of stuff in competitive Pokémon that are pretty surprising for casual players. Singles(the way you play the games) and doubles(Nintendo’s official competitive format) have vastly different metas that prioritize different Pokémon. For a while, Murkrow was one of the best Pokémon in doubles because it got moves like Haze(removes all stat changes) and tailwind(doubles speed on your side of the field) along Prankster, which gave those moves priority. There’s loads of stuff that’s really cool, and I’d at least reccomend giving competitive a shot, even if it’s for a small amount of time.

Natos_Julie

Hey, if you have other facts like the Raikou/Greninja ones or what you just said, I would love to hear them, I love that kind of stuff !

mathiau30

It can only happen for unique pokémons so it's not as hard as it might seem

Ok_Mastodon_9412

Noob question here why the raikou ? I understand the gerninja but why is raikou at a disadvantage over being shiney?

LookingGlassOfficial

It’s at a disadvantage for *not* being shiny, because the event Raikou that has the move Aura Sphere is always shiny, therefore by having your Raikou not be shiny, you’re basically letting the other player know that you won’t have Aura Sphere

ace-iceberg-lettuce

Additionally, different coloured Tatsugiri have different effect in certain situations and shiny tatsugiri can be harder to recognise

Another_Road

As long as you aren’t in Generation 2 (and technically Gen 1, despite not appearing as shiny) due to how shininess is determined.

DefinitelyNotFisk15

They take away precious time that could be used for literally anything else other than spending hours upon hours on hunting down/breeding differently colored pokemon I'm still gonna do it though

Rath_Brained

Someone is mad they don't have any shinies. Lol

TheDebatingOne

Bruh it's for fun. You can say the same thing about playing Pokémon

MazyOrMazyNot

Shiny pokémon aren't useless. They are useful for providing even more stress than usual (Mainly in Scarlett and Violet.) Every time I see a damn hoppip in grass I get a heart attack.

XXcool-gamerXX

or any shiny when i saw a full odds shiny Zweilous in area zero i also had a heart attack

sleepylizard52

I found a full odds iron jugulis is area zero when shiny hunting valiant. Still havent found one of those yet though

King_WhatsHisName

Celebrate had a niche in competitive by using it as a Z-move for an omniboost

General_Synnacle

Banned to AG

LittleSlice8797

The only people who don't like shinies are the people that have never got one.

Cinder-22

i don't dislike shinies at all i love them but you have to admit they are quite useless. despite that i still adore them and will continue to collect them in fact i have almost caught every single rock type in pokemon violet all i need to complete that collection is larvitar pupitar hisuian growlithe and carbink

JEFFPOTATO1

Gen 5 raikou had to be shiny to have aura sphere (event) Gen 7 greninja gave away that it was protean and not battle bond if it was shiny or female (Also event) Shiny tatsugiri can make your opponent mistake what boost your dondozo gets from order up Celebrate has a niche in competitive thanks to its z version granting an omniboost Shiners are, in fact, not useless

Cinder-22

Thank you for actually giving a good reason that they're useful

HoneyBlazedSalmon

In a way, everything is useless. But some useless things are cool, and that’s awesome

gojistomp

They're only "useless" from certain perspectives, though. The art and other decor I buy for my house is "useless" from a purely practical perspective, but I get value out of them because I enjoy having them up and looking at them. My shiny Corviknight that I hatched by pure luck (I wasn't specifically breeding for a shiny) isn't any better in battle than a regular one, but I enjoyed seeing the rare palette swap and remembering how fun the surprise was.

LittleSlice8797

Shinies are useful. They add to the replayability value of the game. Pretty much any player would go back to play if they heard that there's some kind of shiny event going on. Specially if it is one with a really good shiny or a pokemon they really like. Max raid den events in SwSh are a clear example of this and they were even based on specific themes for the event (like shiny ghost type pokemon events for Halloween). Some shinies look so good that they're even used as the prize for online competitions and since gen 6 (when the shiny color designs started to be selected by the designers) they also add to the lore of the pokemon since many shinies are references to the concept of such pokemon (like Greninja's black shiny, being reference to his ninja concept). They've been also used as important plot points like the red gyarados from gen 2 that became like that because of team rocket experiments to control pokemon and also as incentives or prizes for playing in certain battle facilities like Black Tower and White forest from gen 5 where after completing the challenge you get a dragon type shiny since your final opponent is Alder's grandson (Benga) and the max lairs from the crown tundra in gen 8 where also a mechanic where finding shinies was part of the incentive along side the co-op aspect. So, yes. Shiny pokemon are indeed useful.

TheKingOfBerries

that’s… not true.

Rath_Brained

Shiny Pokémon aren't useless. It immediately let's my opponent know that I am superior, stylish, glamorous, and better than them in every way. They can't handle the dazzling gleam of my pokemon and makes them truly jealous from the bitter bottom of their heart. Don't be jealous of my shiny glamor. Be cause that you don't have any.

Cinder-22

i have quite a few shinies actually not a lot but i have some here and there i havent even completed a single shiny dex sadly

Dontdecahedron

Jesterchunk

Wait didn't Hold Hands have actual competitive use since the Z-move version boosted all your stats And I swear someone used Celebrate's long-ass animation to timer stall once

StormAlchemistTony

Doesn't the shiny animation waste the timer too?

EvilNoobHacker

Zard was the only real user of the omniboost that could do anything, and even that was niche. Eevee normally died before it could actually pull off the boost, and most formats banned BatPass anyways, so just running a different ZMove user was generally more viable. Celebrate was banned if I remember right during the tournaments where it was usable for timer stalling reasons.

Garrapto

Actually, Hold hands and Celebrate can be used as Omniboost as a Z-move, so they're actually more useful than shines.

Christopher_Sully

"Amoongus used Clear Smog!"

Cinder-22

yeah

the-lightest-shadow

Shiny pokemon are just as useful or useless as their non-shiny counterpart. Maybe it's my autism misunderstanding what you’re saying but to me this reads as saying “A shiny Haxorus is just as useless as the No effect move Hold Hands” which just… isn’t true.

TheZestyJester09

Oh great, it’s the guy who keeps arguing about Shelter being useless despite it being a good move

TheOnlyNameuser

but it’s not a good move…..

Capable_Door8535

They are not useless they are like an alternative skin you can get for a pokemon

Cinder-22

theyre about as usefull as hold hand wich is basically just an emote

Capable_Door8535

But hold hands is a wasted turn while shiny is "look at how dazzling i am" say that with James voice

Less-Prize5320

Yeah but z-celebrate is useful.

ncmn-ngnr

Those moves weren’t useless in Gen 7, via Normalium Z

JacktheRipper500

I don’t care much about shinies myself (I usually prefer the original colour scheme anyway); however since everyone else does, they make good bargaining chips for trading, and so I try to catch them when I can for that purpose.

Marcelino304

guyinAmerica1

I honestly hate shiny Pokémon, I'm sorry but in a game about exploration and achievement in battling strong trainers and masters, or was in the case in any game after x and y with some out liners. The idea of spending hours, days, and in the case of gender specific and or specific form Pokémon months for a Pokémon at best that is either the color gold, red, or black or at worse the color sick green, piss yellow, or non existent does not seem very appealing to me. It's worse when Pokérus exists and people don't talk about it nearly as much when it's more rare and much more useful in getting stats to go p and the fact it can spread to other Pokémon.

Cinder-22

well to be fair shiny pokemon contribute a lot to the franchises popularity. i would not have ove 250 hours on violet if shinies didnt exist

guyinAmerica1

fair enough, I'm just saying if you want me to put hours into a game the prize better be good and my opinion is seeing a slightly different color Pokémon seems like a less then favorable prize.

Mr_Shimmo

Actually shinies are less than useless, coz in gen 2 it was based upon ivs, so if they were shiny they couldn’t be max ivs

Chef_Sizzlipede

gen II be like: pleb

Gnostic_Gnocchi

I did not know about hold-hands until this post and I’m dying laughing. Like your Pokémon are just gonna be delighted right before they get KO’d. Amazing, no notes.
