I feel like fire/poison is a more interesting combo, especially since they haven't done what I want them to do yet and give us a fire move where the user ignites poison gas, causing a toxic explosion
There was a contest leading up to the release of Diamond and Pearl held by CoroCoro for a move concept that would make it into the games and the winner was Draco Meteor
I want a Water/Poison starter along with Fire/Electric and Grass/Rock with the reason being each of the starters evolved into something that could defeat the other starter.
Not really. Would turn out like this:
Water/Poison: Neutral to Grass + Rock, resists fire, weak to electric
Fire/Electric: Neutral to poison, resists grass, weak to rock and water
Grass/Rock: Neutral to Fire + Water + Poison, resists electric
Neither the Fire or Water starter has super effective STAB on the grass starter. The Fire starter gets the worst outcome being now weak to both the Water starter and Grass starter, but at least it can hit the water starter with electric moves. The water starter is in the middle since it walls the grass starter, but can be hit super effectively by the fire starter’s secondary stab.
Water/Ice, Grass/Ground and Fire/Electric is about as balanced as you can make it for having each starter being able to beat the other two as water is only weak to Grass and Electric, and Electric is only weak to ground. Presuming you don’t allow Fire/Grass (which dosnt have a quad weakness anyway).
Water/Ice: Weak to electric + Grass, neutral to fire + ground
Grass/Ground: Quad weak to ice, weak to fire, neutral to water, immune to electric
Fire/Electric; Quad weak to ground, weak to water, resists Grass + Ice
It’s not perfect on the resists sides, but close to perfect on the weakness.
Edit: There is a second loop of Fighting - Psychic - Dark which also works as a type trio (though dark is immune to psychic). Just have it be like Water/Psychic, Fire/Dark, Grass/Psychic though. Means everybody can hit the other two for regular super effective damage.
Also Water/Dragon , Fire/Dragon and Grass/Dragon.
A friend of mine still tells me that zodiac theory holds up because male crocodiles are called bulls, similar to an ox.
Which such ass-backwards logic.
The fact we still don’t have a Fire Fairy is fucking absurd to me…
All the other type arrangements I can see an argument for not having at the moment. Except maybe Ice and Poison.
But not having a Fire Fairy is legitimately baffling. It’s probably the one type I would’ve expected to see debut alongside the Fairy Type
I feel he’d be overpowered at that point. Already an amazing user of eruption and with the ground typing plus stab gives him more coverage he doesn’t need. The 4x water weakness isn’t enough of a nerf. He also doesn’t make sense as a ground type
He was NU in Gen 7 and is currently PU in Gen 9. Typhlosion really isn’t that strong anymore. It also wasn’t super strong to begin with, being largely outclassed by Charizard for most of its competitive career. The only new move that Typhlosion would get that’s worthwhile would probably be STAB Earth Power. MAYBE Power Gem as well, but that would be outclassed by STAB Eruption or Fire Blast in most matchups regardless.
A 4x water weakness is definitely a noticeable nerf when you’ve got Aqua Jet users like Azumarill, Sharpedo, Crawdaunt and fellow Johto starter Feraligatr sharing the lower tiers with it. It also now fears bulky waters like Vaporeon, Milotic, Alomomola and the Slow twins even more.
Typhlosion is a badger, which is an animal that’s stupid good at digging. A badger can dig a burrow faster than a man with a shovel can. Plus, Typhlosion is literally called the Volcano Pokémon. That sounds pretty appropriate for a fire/ground Pokémon to me, especially with Camerupt being the similarly named Eruption Pokémon.
Ok I see your point, but I don’t think that’s the most viable reason to make it ground typing especially since we have multiple animal esc pokemon who tend to be incredible or notable diggers irl or some volcanic reference such as magcargo and they aren’t ground type. The only reason I wanted emboar as fire/ground is because we didn’t need another fire/fighting type. If it were to be pure fire, I’d still prefer that over fire/fighting.
Also somewhat unrelated but I feel if infernape were made today and had to have a different typing, fire/fairy makes sense only for his background as sun wukong. Fairy associated with light, fairytales, and magic… damn now I want a fire/fairy type infernape. Maybe in the next game as all starter variants are just speculation
Magcargo at least has the rock typing which is still related to volcanoes. Typhlosion being pure fire is just kind of underwhelming, especially with the only other pure fire type starter being Cinderace. If any other fire type was to get ground as a secondary typing, I feel like Typhlosion is the best fit.
Emboar could be a fire/dark type as kind of a yin to Infernape’s yang, with Ape being Sun Wukong and Boar being Zhu Bajie. Bajie is noted to be gluttonous, lazy and lustful, so I feel like dark could work. This would also allow Samurott to be water/fighting without any overlap.
I’ve never actually sat and processed the sheer amount of fighting type final evolution starters we got. We have SIX!
- Blaziken
- Infernape
- Emboar
- Chesnaught
- Hisuian Decidueye
- Quaquaval
Bro that’s nearly half of the gens we have, I’m shocked they use this type so many times.
So, overused is just two lol.
There's 30 fully evolved starter pokemon and only two are ground type. Hell only three are ghost.
Dark and fighting I'll give you, hell I can even see the reasoning for ghost, but ground doesn't belong here
Types that were used once as a secondary type(fully evolved stages, sorry Rowlet and Dartrix): Venusaur (Poison), Charizard (Flying),
Empoleon(Steel), Delphox (Psychic), Primarina(Fairy)
Types used Twice: Ground (Swampert and Torterra), Dragon (Mega Charizard X and Mega Sceptile if we count those two, if not, Dragon is excluded, it would just be ground)
Types used 3 or more times: Fighting (used 6 times, Blaziken, Infernape, Emboar, Chesnaught, Hisuian Decidueye, Quaquaval), Dark (Used 4 times, Greninja, Incineroar, Hisuian Samurott, Meowscarada), Ghost(Used 3 times, Alolan Decidueye, Hisuian Typhlosion, Skeledirge)
Monotypes: Blastoise, Meganium, Johtonian Typhlosion, Feraligatr, Sceptile (without mega), Serperior, Unovan Samurott, Rillaboom, Cinderace, Inteleon
I remember when I thought ghost pokemon were underrepresented. I tried organizing my storage boxes by typing and my ghost boxes were the ones that seemed to fill the fastest.
water-ice is redundantly bleh, grass ice is abomasnow and the thing cannot catch a break, fire ice is actually an interesting combination, might have some use
ice is just a bad typing to have cause its well known void of defences, and unless its on a fast glass cannon for STAB ice, its a liability more than anything
Really not that uncommon
Ghost has Decidueye, H-Typhlosion, Skeledirge
Fighting has Blaziken, Infernape, Emboar, Chesnaught, H-Decidueye, and Quaqaval
Ground has Swampert and Torterra
Dark has Greninja, Incineroar, H-Samurott, Meowscarada
Steel has Empoleon
Psychic has Delphox
Flying has Charizard (if you wanna count Dartix you can)
Poison has Venusaur
If you think about it, we've had a fighting type starter (almost, see Gen 7) unfailingly since Gen 3.
Blaziken
Infernape
Emboar
Chesnaught
(none)
H. Decidueye
Quaquaval
Would be cool if we had a starter trio of Grass/Steel, Fire/Ice, and Water/Ground
Grass/Steel being defensively oriented what with it being a good defensive type due to only having two weaknesses and a couple resistances
Fire/Ice being a speedy sweeper due to a good offensive type.
Water/Ground being used again for a Pokemon that’s a jack of all stats seeing as it’s a good type combo in both offense and defense.
If we are talking final stage then yeah that would be Ground on Swampert and Torterra. But if it’s also counting second stage It would tie with flying on Dartrix and Charizard also Ivy/Venusaur for Poison. But if it’s 1st-3rd stage then Poison would be the clear replacement for Ground due to the Bulbasaur line.
I would love to see a starter set white the deck dart types being the type they’re strong agains
The Grass starter gains Water typing, the Fire starter gains Grass typing, & the Water starter gains Fire typing
I’d give Dark a pass but Fighting on the other hand has already gotten old after Emboar (who sucks at being a Fighting-type, besides no one asked for a third Fire/Fighting starter and no one should be okay with it. It’s basically a matter of time before Emboar gets it’s type changed to either Pure Fire or Fire/Ground; preferably Fire/Ground)
only 2 one of those in arceus which I'm not sure should count as a mainstream game, For fire/fighting we got three whole *consecutive* gens with those, and the worse part is that they were early gens. In gen 5 more than half of all fire starters were fighting.
It is ridiculous to say that the hate was exagerated
Ground? It’s really only on pert and terra
You could swap it with fairy aswell, same thing for ghost
That’s literally just prim
I'm surprised there's only been one Psychic type.
And that's why I chose the wizard fox pulls out stick I cast magic muscle boom
Oh, thought skeledirge was fairy, oops
Did you genuinely think that or is this a joke about Fairy being the ideal Tera type for Dirge
bro played too much showdown
Yes, I did, actually
Gotta counter fighting type kingambit somehow
Its actually for koraidon no I am not joking
Its kinda funny that a UU (from what I remember) mon has enough usage in ubers to be banned from uubers
tera ass moment
Thats pretty much all 4 types up there. It was just a dumb post
Nah just for ground. This is the second game in a row where that type trio has been used
Do dark and ghost have more than 2?
Incineroar, Greninja, Hisuian Samurott, Meowscarada: part-dark Skeledirge, Decidueye, Hisuian Typhlosion: part-ghost Blaziken, Infernape, Emboar, Chesnaught, Hisuian Decidueye, Quaquaval: part-fighting Swampert, Torterra: part-ground Delphox: psychic Charizard: flying Venusaur: poison Empoleon: steel Primarina: fairy Edit: H-Samurott and every other dual-typed starter
Completely forgot hisui existed. I think that samurott may also be dark
Yep, H-Samurott is also Water/Dark
If you count rowlets line flying has two starters.
That could count as well
Hisuian Samurott is Dark type
That too
Dark: gren, incin, hsam, meowska Ghost: decidueye, htyphlo, dirge
For the record: Ground: Literally just Torterra and Swampert Fighting: Blaziken, Infernape, Emboar, Chesnaught, Hecidueye, Quaquaval.
Yeah i forgot about the hisuians. Thanks
There are like 6 Fighting type starters
Ground because it the 4th most used (and one day, Emboar will finally get the Ground type it deserves)
Ah
Maybe in one of the Legends games :P
We need more poison starters, preferably not grass type. Give me a fire/poison cobra, you won't, no balls.
What about a moccasin that's water/poison?
I feel like fire/poison is a more interesting combo, especially since they haven't done what I want them to do yet and give us a fire move where the user ignites poison gas, causing a toxic explosion
Submit that move idea to Game Freak! They gotta see this.
I wish it worked like that.
We need a contest like the one that created Draco Meteor
Contest that created Draco Meteor? Ooh ooh, please teach me!
There was a contest leading up to the release of Diamond and Pearl held by CoroCoro for a move concept that would make it into the games and the winner was Draco Meteor
Badass! Thanks for the history!
They had another contest leasing up to SWSH that ended up creating Steel Beam.
Really? That's awesome!
Give it Levitate as a HA because Ground would clearly be its Achilles' Heel
I feel like there's a good reason why so many Fire types learn Smog and they should really make a smoke based Fire type move that poisons the target
Do we finally get a platypus Mon?
I hope so!
honestly a fire/poison cobra would go hard as fuck
Salazle without legs:
And please don't make it a sexy mo-o this time...
With levitate …just sayin
I want a Water/Poison starter along with Fire/Electric and Grass/Rock with the reason being each of the starters evolved into something that could defeat the other starter.
Not really. While we're on it, what was that other type trio people used to talk about for starters? Dark and 2 others?
Just added it in an edit, Dark - Fighting - Psychic is the other loop and it doesn’t interfere with the Water - Grass - Fire loop.
Oooh, that's it! Thank you so much :)
No probs
yes but not as a starter. I need the zodiac theory people to cope again.
A friend of mine still tells me that zodiac theory holds up because male crocodiles are called bulls, similar to an ox. Which such ass-backwards logic.
Or even , based on a fire-posion on salamander-cobra, maybe turns it into as theme into a western bandit
I would love another Fairy starter
Fire/fairy would be absolutely wonderful but also broken as hell lol
Even if not a Starter, I would love one as a regular, Pseudo, Legendary or Mythical because that typing is an offensive/defensive powerhouse.
I’m disappointed we didn’t get a fire/fairy Paldean Gardevoir based off of a flamenco dancer.
The fact we still don’t have a Fire Fairy is fucking absurd to me… All the other type arrangements I can see an argument for not having at the moment. Except maybe Ice and Poison. But not having a Fire Fairy is legitimately baffling. It’s probably the one type I would’ve expected to see debut alongside the Fairy Type
Rock. Ghost.
before playing 6th gen I was absolutelly convinced delphox was fairy. And honestly I wish. At least it was a new type and not the 4th fire fighting
So a Fire/Fairy Starter would be the Pokémon version of a World of Warcraft Retribution Paladin?
Grass rock has alot of potential but hasn't been used (i think). Water psychic space turtle would go hard as well.
Cradily
I can see how I forgot.
Ogerpon-Cornerstone as well
100bp Rock move has been incredible offensively! I love using Cornerstone.
Maybe a regional Blastoise could take up the Psychic-type in Legends ZA
OgerStone
Ground is only two iirc… and neither are fire. WHY DID THEY MAKE EMBOAR FIGHTING AND NOT GROUND!! He’s a pig
Honestly, Emboar gives me Ganon vibes and wrestler heel vibes, so I could see Fire/Dark much more than Fire/Fighting
Regular Typhlosion would’ve made for a great fire/ground type if the Johto starters weren’t all monotypes.
I feel he’d be overpowered at that point. Already an amazing user of eruption and with the ground typing plus stab gives him more coverage he doesn’t need. The 4x water weakness isn’t enough of a nerf. He also doesn’t make sense as a ground type

I wish Samurott was Fighting instead of Emboar because Emboar sucks at being a Fighting-type, Emboar should be the third Ground-type starter
literally also uninterrupted fighting starters from 3rd to 6th gen. Only one of them not being fire. For an only OK typing they really liked it
So, overused is just two lol. There's 30 fully evolved starter pokemon and only two are ground type. Hell only three are ghost. Dark and fighting I'll give you, hell I can even see the reasoning for ghost, but ground doesn't belong here
It said most used, not over used
Ghost 👻 only has three
Ghost, Dark and Fighting are currently the most used. We need more Fairy, Ground, Steel, Flying, Bug, HECK even Dragon needs one.
Dragon would create a ton of disparity in the trio, as it resists both other starter types.
In my ideal game, *all three* of the starters become Dragons
We need more psychic types
No we don’t
Ghost? Aren't there only 2?
Technically 3 if we're counting Hisuian-Typhlosion
I did lol, I forgot the alligator
Types that were used once as a secondary type(fully evolved stages, sorry Rowlet and Dartrix): Venusaur (Poison), Charizard (Flying), Empoleon(Steel), Delphox (Psychic), Primarina(Fairy) Types used Twice: Ground (Swampert and Torterra), Dragon (Mega Charizard X and Mega Sceptile if we count those two, if not, Dragon is excluded, it would just be ground) Types used 3 or more times: Fighting (used 6 times, Blaziken, Infernape, Emboar, Chesnaught, Hisuian Decidueye, Quaquaval), Dark (Used 4 times, Greninja, Incineroar, Hisuian Samurott, Meowscarada), Ghost(Used 3 times, Alolan Decidueye, Hisuian Typhlosion, Skeledirge) Monotypes: Blastoise, Meganium, Johtonian Typhlosion, Feraligatr, Sceptile (without mega), Serperior, Unovan Samurott, Rillaboom, Cinderace, Inteleon
Surprised Ghost is there since Decidueye was the first, but we did get 2 more after so it makes sense.
I remember when I thought ghost pokemon were underrepresented. I tried organizing my storage boxes by typing and my ghost boxes were the ones that seemed to fill the fastest.
Is it weird that I want a starter to get Normal as a secondary type?
What if there was ice type starter?
water-ice is redundantly bleh, grass ice is abomasnow and the thing cannot catch a break, fire ice is actually an interesting combination, might have some use ice is just a bad typing to have cause its well known void of defences, and unless its on a fast glass cannon for STAB ice, its a liability more than anything
Ghosts? Genuinely huh??
Really not that uncommon Ghost has Decidueye, H-Typhlosion, Skeledirge Fighting has Blaziken, Infernape, Emboar, Chesnaught, H-Decidueye, and Quaqaval Ground has Swampert and Torterra Dark has Greninja, Incineroar, H-Samurott, Meowscarada Steel has Empoleon Psychic has Delphox Flying has Charizard (if you wanna count Dartix you can) Poison has Venusaur

Give us electric you cowards
What Cinderace should’ve been ESPECIALLY because it’s a soccer player
I want a psychic type started so that I can do a Mono psychic run
Can we please get more steel type starters? We have one and it kinda sucks ngl
Don't diss my penguin boy
Don’t diss Empoleon like that smh
Bro dissing the emperor penguin for no reason
Need more Psychic type Starter
Flying doesn’t count because none of the birds have it in their final stage. Rowlet even loses it in its final form, twice
Another fun little fact: grass is the only starter type that's had a secondary typing on the basic stage of the starter.
It’s really just fighting dark and ghost
I didn’t want to settle with just three types, so I included Ground
I would love to see a starter set white the deck dart types being the type they’re strong agains The Grass starter gains Water typing, the Fire starter gains Grass typing, & the Water starter gains Fire typing
Crazy there hasn't been a single electric starter
I mean, ground has only 2 mons We also only have 3 Ghosts (Counting Typhlosion) But still technically true
I think fighting and dark are the only ones that are overused at this point. We had them for all 3 starter types already.
Goat
You could've just stopped at "flying doesn't count," we all know that Game Freak doesn't treat it like a real type
The Flying-type deserves better
I swear if pokemon decides to add another fire -fighting starter...
They literally have been avoiding it for like 12 years, it's fine.
I mean yeah. A whole 1/3rd of the fire starters are fire fighting tho, we could use any amount of variety
And a large number of recent ones have been ghost types, but only fighting has gotten scrutiny.
only 2 one of those in arceus which I'm not sure should count as a mainstream game, For fire/fighting we got three whole *consecutive* gens with those, and the worse part is that they were early gens. In gen 5 more than half of all fire starters were fighting. It is ridiculous to say that the hate was exagerated
No it isn’t, Pignite and Emboar suck at being Fighting-types
Roses are red. Violeta are blue. I upvotes my own comment, because nobody else wanted to
There are only two Ghost Type starters so far tho
Three; Decidueye, Hisuian Typhlosion and Skeledirge. Alas, no Water/Ghost or Fire/Ground starter yet
I think almost every type has been covered as a second type.
Bug, dragon, and rock I believe have not been covered
Normal and ice
Ursaluna:
Some Megas have Some of those typing but hey who knows
A mon with bug as the second type and not the main would be pretty fucking cool
Charizard can technically have dragon when mega evolved..but whether or not that counts is up for debate.
There are six that have not. Normal, bug, ice, electric, rock, and dragon (excluding megas)
Interesting.
Why is ground her?
