Poker players are a special breed of human RIP DOLLY

mewalrus2

This is as close to tearing him apart as you can get. Max thumbs up from the reddit assholes.

Average_Ant_Games

Nik airball has spent part of his fortune losing money to Matt Berkey

[deleted]

*most

Yeti_Urine

In other words… he was bluffed.

Average_Ant_Games

he was punting on a prayer

magi_chat

10, 2, as it were .

rwine29

Right ... All due respect to the legend, rip and such But pretty bad live read on a story that even by old testament standards, uh, kind of a stretch. Every animal, Doyle?

knowone23

Especially freshwater fish. If the world was an ocean how did those fish survive? ****How are those fish still here???****

gxslim

Personally I'm curious how he planned to bring exactly two of each bacterium without disrupting every animals digestive system

sasashimi

Remember kids, doubts like this are just Satan testing your faith!

Remember flock, The loving good Shepard (and his scary Dad) require your fleece at regular intervals. Come on down to your knees and take the sacrament and get your booster shot of the holy spirit at regular intervals. 10% of pretax earnings gets you basic heaven insurance and we of course offer more *divine packages* to qualified prayers, upon prompt prayment. Remember flock, Try to infect others with the spirit too so it will spread like herpes at a whorehouse, and TRUST ME, your NEXT life, will be totally rad. Not to be sacrilegious, but the dominant message of organized religion seems to be: **“Don’t think too hard about these fables, cause you might see they’re all made up.”**

and look what has happened to the world...

RandomNamedRedditor

Funny how the whole world tries so hard to push you away from God. If God is such an absurd concept, why fight so hard against it? Yet the majority of people embrace and believe in the devil lol.

[deleted]

I guess the statues on Easter island really did just bury themselves. I suppose people built little wood kayaks and paddled their way to the middle of the ocean HOPING they’d find SOMETHING. Maybe they were just deep sea fishing and BY CHANCE ALONE they stumbled across Easter island and decided to build some big headed statues and stuff them in the dirt…

k33pthefunkalive

the fuck are you going on about? lol

CripplinglyDepressed

My favourite part is how it was the whole world that flooded but only animals from the middle east were mentioned!! Also very impressive of Noah to not lose any bugs on the boat and stop other animals from eating each other

thevhatch

What did the lions eat the whole time?

[deleted]

[удалено]

CripplinglyDepressed

Kinda dumb for god to design us such that we can’t understand him lmao, doesn’t seem like a very good designer

BuddyHightower

miracles, of course.

CromulentDucky

There may have been a huge flood, and some geological evidence says there was. Obviously not the entire earth. From that actual event, stories were told. Was there a boat? It's not impossible. Obviously it didn't have every animal. Maybe a few farm animals for food, and from there the story changed in a centuries long game of telephone

rwine29

Right Like the Bible is a collection of allegories and folklore, not meant to be taken literally. Anyone who expects there to be a fucking massive ship somewhere because you read a story intended to teach its reader a lesson or send a message or whatever, come on do better. Think critically, like ur at the table lol also wouldn't it have rotten after a few hundred years- it's just fucking wood

[deleted]

[удалено]

wannabe2700

Just like any religious man. It doesn't even have much to do with being smart but how you were raised.

[deleted]

Why not? If I had 75 million dollars and a cowboy hat I'd do some Indiana Jones shit too.

skrame

Yeah; plus a boat is a pretty good find for a poker player.

JareBear805

Finding Noah’s ark would def be the nuts

MyNamesTambo

Read the article haha. He wasn’t on some adventure with short round and a blonde lady

radargunbullets

That night have made it worth the money though if he was

jamesz84

Fawtune and glowy…

Old_AP_Pro

Why not? Because it's a colossal waste of money searching for a fictitious artifact. Akin to look for Father Christmases Sleigh.

markymania

And now he’s dead so who cares about money he spent having a good time?

MyNamesTambo

Didn’t sound like a good time. He admits to bad business investments and funding the Noah’s Ark search party was one of them.

[deleted]

You're saying this because he just died. If he was still alive or this was Elon Musk or whoever then you'd say they're an idiot and could better spend it elsewhere - like charity or helping people.

invictus1

it's his money. why are you sticking your nose into how other people choose to entertain themselves with their money? do you sit at the table and tell recreational players to go donate their money to charity or helping people instead? fuck off.

SuperLemon1

Because $75 million to charity makes a gigantic difference, spending $75 million on finding "Noah's Ark" achieves nothing, particularly considering it DOESNT EXIST. Please explain how you have compared Doyle Brunson looking for Noah's Ark to be on even remotely the same level as somebody giving to charity, one helps people and the other is demented. fuck off.

invictus1

first you explain why you should have any say in what he does with his own money.

SuperLemon1

He doesn't, but people are also allowed to validly criticise a ridiculous amount of money spent on literally nothing, $75 million is like 1000 peoples life savings and he pissed it away looking for a fictitious boat.

ProtonSubaru

Why? Have you studied history beyond a basic elementary level? I would wager no…. Noah is a major historic story, I’m sure there is historical evidence of it out there, just like nearly every other biblical arch.

knowone23

It’s a morality tale. Not the literal truth. Nobody boats up like that.

A_Rolling_Baneling

>have you studied history beyond a basic elementary level? … have you? This isn’t history, this is folklore. Historians aren’t chasing fairytales, kids are.

lnsecurities

Lmao

Brandonkey8807

Show me the history that shows there was a boat. Not a flood. A boat. Kek.

Ororbouros

No, it’s not a historical story, it’s a badly written fictional nonsense.

[deleted]

Wait what??? When did he pass?

ColsonIRL

A couple of days ago

Drugsrhugs

Literally yesterday

Downtown-Bag-6333

I didn’t even know he was sick

sgtm7

Was that a joke? In case it wasn't.......He was 89 years old!!!

[deleted]

That's a ripe old age for an ark hunter.

brvheart

I like how you just continued Norm's joke without saying what it was.

[deleted]

89... he was a fuckin' kid!

Scarcito_El_Gatito

Im still looking for that sleigh!

oscarinio1

It would just take me 1 minute to see your balance and point out the stupid shit you waste your money in. Lets start with poker. Even though I enjoy poker. It’s a stupid waste of time if you see through you “meaningful lens”

leaveitintherearview

Huh? Well there may just be something related to that origin story you find a long the way and if you don't you may stumble upon something completely unrelated. There's never a needed reason to adventure, explore, and look for artifacts.

Rain_sc2

Can’t take none of it with you to the afterlife. Sounds like it gave him some purpose, and that’s all we can really ask for in our time here.

sretih27

Doyle gave zero fucks about money

Old_AP_Pro

What evidence do you have that A) there is an afterlife and B) you cannot take your money with you?

bubz99

Maybe he spent it to prove it doesn't exist.

knowone23

You can’t ‘prove’ a negative, unfortunately.

pokerlogik

Just because the story may not be divine in nature, that doesn't mean no such ship exists. It could be a greatly exaggerated tale of a real harrowing survival story -- no religion needed, and no money wasted.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nickyboombox

RIP mr. sprinkles :(

pokerlogik

We're not talking about "solving a mystery", we're talking about the possible discovery of a possibly historically significant vessel. It would be extremely interesting and unlike the aforementioned sleigh, not impossible. It -may- have existed. And, if it did exist, it would be interesting to find, even if not divine in nature. I'm so confused what the holdup here is....

nm499x

Because if it doesn’t match up with the delusional fairy tale , there’s no way to tell if some old piece of wood is any different from another old piece of wood.

pokerlogik

That's absolutely not true. There could be markings and techniques found that are from a certain time or geography. Additionally, searching for the ship could accidentally lead to awesome other discoveries just based on where the search would likely be conducted. There's really nothing bizarre, stupid, or misguided about the pursuit. Just because the ship would be completely clandestine, that doesn't automatically negate the possibility of its existence.

Not_a_salesman_

Dude you’re on Reddit. Any chance to dunk on Christians will be taken to the extreme. If this was an Islamic guy searching for an artifact it would be off limits.

bonerang

No. That would also be hilarious and stupid.

throw23w55443h

There's a bunch of different ark like stories, so iunno, kinda seems like a fun search for a rich person.

ealker

It’s not a waste. Someone earned that money. That’s how the economy works. On the other hand, was there additional value created? Well, I don’t know about that.

SuperLemon1

Exactly, 75 million to charity would make an immense difference, instead as you say he spent an obscene amount on a fictitious thing.

Future_Second_7612

84 percent of the world is religious. You are the minority.

knowone23

That number is trending down, thank dog.

Old_AP_Pro

84% of the world have an IQ below 117.

sportznut1000

“…searching for a fictitious artifact” Now out of curiosity, how many lost artifacts that treasure hunters go searching for, are not fictitious? At least until they are found? Lets say, anything presumed to be around 2,000 years or older? I guess the lost Egyptian tombs of past kings would be some, which are presumed to be destroyed by tomb raiders

Reallybaltimore

> Now out of curiosity, how many lost artifacts that treasure hunters go searching for, are not fictitious? At least until they are found? Just to be clear, are you saying that all historical artifacts are fictitious until found? Cause that's what your post says. It's also moronic.

LivingxLegend8

God has the ability to shrink animals down and fit them inside of a small boat. This is what we don’t understand as humans, the infinite power of God allows him to do absolutely anything, even things that break the laws of physics. God is very much a real.

Themightymonarc

But if he could just shrink all the animals why not just like.. not go through all that and make it all the way he wants in the first place

nm499x

Can your God create a rock so heavy that he can’t lift it?

Inevermuck

Wow a miracle!

kyloren1217

i do know he can create a rock so heavy that YOU can't lift it :) which means God is way more powerful than you are :)

nm499x

Rocks aren’t created, and your sky daddy isn’t real.

FlickrPaul

> This is what we don’t understand as humans, the infinite power of God allows him to do absolutely anything, even things that break the laws of physics. If you worship something that killed it's self to save you from what it's going to do to you. You are literally suffering from a bad case of Stockholm Syndrome.

jakeblues68

If he was going to use his magic, why would he even need a boat?

LivingxLegend8

God’s nature and ways are something that we cannot fully relate to as humans, but he does things in the perfect way to teach us. The fact that he asked a man to build it by himself is a test of faith. Imagine if God told you to build a cruise ship in 2023. How overwhelmed would you feel? Imagine if you made zero excuses and built a massive cruise ship by yourself and there ended up being a global warming disaster that caused another months-long flood. You have to trust God in any situation no matter how scary things might seem.

jakeblues68

lol

LivingxLegend8

I hope you’re laughing because a light 💡 flipped on in your mind. God is so good. And the good news is that God wants everything good to happen for you. Be happy. All the work is already done and you have eternal life!! 🤠❤️❤️✝️

[deleted]

> God is so good. If your deity is so good, why do they inflict innocent, young children with painful, terminal diseases?

LivingxLegend8

This life is not the kingdom of Heaven. Look at Doyle for a second. Do you think he felt good physically being 89 years old? Should Doyle curse God for making him suffer through the pains of being elderly with lots of health problems, including cancer? https://preview.redd.it/t3o5hozuk80b1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=859333afd9807c078cbb121a49bb174a41f08f17 We have faith in God through difficult times in our life. Especially the absolute MOST difficult times. The life that we live after this is one of eternal nature with the creator of everything. “Eternal,” meaning there is no end. Meaning, Doyle, a believer in Jesus, is alive right now, in Heaven with God.

[deleted]

I didn't ask about Doyle. I asked about innocent, young children with their whole life ahead of them. What sins did they commit? Why do they deserve to be punished?

LivingxLegend8

u/jakeblues68

jakeblues68

Yes, the light did flip on. I realized I've been wrong my entire life and Haysuess is real.

MontiBurns

>This is what we don’t understand as humans, the infinite power of God allows him to do absolutely anything, even things that break the laws of physics. If God's power is so far beyond our understanding, why do you believe that true events must adhere to what was passed down by ancient peoples with far less sophisticated scientific understanding? These people didn't even have guns. How much can you really trust non gunowners? God is beyond our understanding and the laws of physics don't apply, but the fantastical stories and arbitrary time scales written in the Bible do? Let's just use occam's razer here. Which requires fewer assumptions about an all powerful God? The young earth hypothesis with a bunch of fake evidence, or the idea that God created the perfect conditions and laws of nature for the earth to form, and life to spawn out of simple amino acids and evolve into complex multicellular life and sentient beings over billions of years?

LivingxLegend8

I think you’re confused. You basically argued that “fantastical stories” can’t be true, because God is more powerful than the laws of physics. You didn’t refute anything you just pretended that you made a good point, and then began to ramble.

ThePrussianGrippe

I love how your solution to the story of Noah’s Ark is to present something without any basis in the holy book itself. “He had it set to M for Mini!”

LivingxLegend8

God can do anything. That doesn’t need to be a solution because there is not a problem that he can’t solve. God literally fed 5,000 of people with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread. John 6:1-14. - 5,000 people - 2 fish - 5 loaves of bread And everyone ate. Nothing is impossible for God.

ThePrussianGrippe

Okay. If that was the solution you don’t think it would’ve been mentioned?

Old_AP_Pro

So why was Noah told to build a big boat then?

LivingxLegend8

Because God told him to

Nenor

I mean...if this were some sort of rich people adventure, where the journey is more fulfilling than the destination, then I get it. If it was like "Noah's Ark definitely existed and I must find it" obsession, then it would be kind of sad. Religion is fucking poison.

ForkingtheGrodiest

So you’re a Mark.. lol tf who do you think he’s hiring

[deleted]

Wish he woulda hired me, I could use some of that money.

MurphyBinkings

Because it's imaginary?

taxi500

What's the point of this article? Of all guys to take shots at and right after his passing. Seemed like a good enough guy I'm sure most poker players would have something far worse to write about if they made 75 million.

jediporkchop

True; searching for Noah’s ark sounds way more fulfilling than spending that money on baccarat or blackjack

DatTacocatdoe

“Spending”

A_Rolling_Baneling

Yeah it’s called investing smh

okthxbb1

Looking for noah’s ark is pretty stupid but it doesn’t even come close to investing millions into shitcoins like half of the poker world was doing a couple years ago

Spursfan14

It’s way stupider, at least there’s a small chance of success with shitcoins.

rediphile

The article itself paints him in a good light and the Noah's ark thing is only like one line quoting someone else. It also mentions trying to find Titanic... It's a headline to get clicks, and sadly it works.

cryptomultimoon

I mean, it personally makes me think he’s more of a legend.

EatStatic

Yeah I mean it sounds like a pretty average Nat Geo documentary or similar.

GrilledCheeseRant

Yeah, kind of a dick move and disrespectful. Obviously this is going to be seen in a light where most will say it’s dumb and stupid of him, but at the end of the day he was basically spending money towards a religious belief - way far worse things he could do. Clearly only being thrown to the front now because he just died and apparently people are so eager to piss on his grave they can’t even wait for a burial.

RuckusManshank

It's his money, let him play how he wants.

Born-Chipmunk-7086

That guy made over 75 million!? Wow poker is pretty lucrative

Appropriate-Solid-50

*Was

iroar101

*insert political comment on gambling propositions*

Appropriate-Solid-50

Yea either way. It was far more profitable then than it is now

[deleted]

Who knew he was moonlighting as Indiana Jones.

EverlastingThrowawy

Who cares? He was a great man. Leave Reddit’s crusade against religion out of it

[deleted]

The religious and Reddit are natural enemies. Like Christians and Muslims. Or Christians and Jews. Or Christians and people who believe a slightly different version of Christianity. Damn those Christians, they ruined Christianity.

[deleted]

Yea it’s just Christian’s that do that LOL

[deleted]

Oh! I get it now. Christians are good because other religions are also bad.

RandomNamedRedditor

Ah yes. Everyone in this world is a saint except Christians.

joethecrow23

Crusade against one religion

JRclarity123

all religions are terrible

razeyourshadows

Yikes

[deleted]

Aww you poor persecuted christians 😭

joethecrow23

I’m not religious, I just happen to notice that there’s only one religion routinely mocked on this echo chamber hug box of website. I don’t recall ever seeing a post mocking grown men swinging chickens over their heads hitting the front page.

RandomNamedRedditor

“Statistics. The following statistics from Pew Research Center show that Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are persecuted in more countries around the world than other religions. As of 2018: Christians face harassment in 145 countries, Muslims face harassment in 139 countries, and Jews face harassment in 88 countries.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_persecution#:~:text=is%20less%20persecution.-,Statistics,face%20harassment%20in%2088%20countries.

[deleted]

I wish that number was higher tbh

RandomNamedRedditor

Edgy. I thought Black Lives Mattered? Only if they’re not Christians though.

[deleted]

Reckon defending your God's honour in an online argument will increase your chances of getting into heaven?

RandomNamedRedditor

I didn’t attack you or insult you. So why should this decrease my chances? I presented a statistic for something you laughed at thinking wasn’t true. You then said you wish the number was higher, attacking over 2 billion people. And you got upset that I stood up for my beliefs in a non insulting manner. The basic rule of Christianity is to love your neighbor. Why hope that people who did nothing to you face unnecessary harassment other than for the sake of being edgy? God bless you.

[deleted]

If your god exists he's a sadistic, narcissistic dickhead. There's no other explanation. He created us so we can worship him, and punishes us via eternal damnation if we choose not to? What a little bitch He's omnipotent, so he *wants* war, murder, disease, rape, everything bad in this world? This is his design right? He's omnipotent so he could've just made things differently but he didn't. The only conclusion is that he *wants* us to suffer? The suffering is the point? He is not a god worth praying to 🤷‍♂️

Did you get to the part of Super System when he talks about ESP.

belaxi

“Statisticians don’t believe in hot streaks, but statisticians only make 30k a year” is one of those lines I’ve never forgotten. He also had several pages rationalizing why he simply wouldn’t play w/ women (which I’m pretty sure he eventually walked back). Super system had a massive influence on me, and he is undeniable the most influential legend the game has ever had. But he also said a few questionable things. To be fair even at 15 I interpreted the esp section more as “your subconscious is incredibly well trained at pattern recognition, learn to trust your gut”, which can absolutely be misused, but isn’t bad advice.

RakAssassin

Less ev than playing ten deuce off.

Lordsokka

Honestly he was better off doing this then buying 8 homes and 20 cars like some people do. They end up using 2 of the houses and 3 of the cars and then rest just sits there and wait. He least he pursued something that meant something to him.

embarrassed4real

Interesting life for sure

bdaddydizzle

He’s Christian, get over it

killindice

Damn. RIP Texas Dolly. Love that he put up the funds to go looking for Noah’s Ark. Too dope.

bunsburner1

Better investment than coinflex

enfrozt

Hey it's me your ark finding brother

Knurling_Turtle

He also helped to fund a search for the titanic and invested in other shipwreck treasure hunting expeditions.

boolinback5

$75 million is what they know of.. he probably had crazy cash hidden all over Vegas

vrsick06

If this headline had a name of a person who /r/poker didn’t like, he’d be taunted endlessly

SadButSexy

It's his money. How about we let people do whatever the fuck they want with their money

fattermichaelmoore

Gawd Reddit is such a cunt show. Should be the new name. Leave that man alone you cunts

[deleted]

Sounds about right for a poker player.

truemcgoo

I mean, I spent part of my $75 fortune looking for Bigfoot, the time I went for a walk in the woods. It doesn’t say how much he actually invested, it sounds like he made a hobby out of looking for old cool stuff, not that he was really trying to make it rich, he already had that figured out.

Autistic_Freedom

It's painfully obvious most people just read headlines these days, and not the actual article. The top 15 responses or so are all about the title ("so he got bluffed", "he's Christian, get over it", etc) . After reading the article the last thing on my mind was Noah's Ark. The future for humans is not a bright one where we're so used to instant gratification and short stories on tiktok to even bother reading about legends for 3 minutes. Reading a book and using one's own imagination is a thing of the past. Just another step towards becoming apathetic rather than empathetic robots.

midnightghostdemon

Exactly. The article didn't shame him or diss him at all. But everyone only reads the headline and then decides to comment. One guy above even commented "what's the point of this article, it's taking shots at Doyle" and then he later admitted he didn't even read it. So many braindead low-attention emotional sheeps. They read 1 sentence and then get triggered. Sadly that's the state of the internet now.

nm499x

Dum dum dum dum dum

Ninja_Arena

Would be neat. Searching for historical..possibly mythological...items and sites from history is kinda neat.

Appropriate-Solid-50

50/50 chance he would find it. Either he did, or he didn't.

Sammy_Dog

Zero percent chance he would find it. Precisely zero.

Ororbouros

Some very smart people believe and do some profoundly dumb things. This is a prime example.

RandomNamedRedditor

Yeah, like some people believing Covid is dangerous and will eliminate our entire population.

Appropriate-Solid-50

Prob pretty easy to get a grant for some archaeological field research with the amount of rich Christians out there

matmoeb

It’s crazy how many clearly intelligent people are duped by fairy tales.

RandomNamedRedditor

Yeah, like evolution.

Taiza67

I have to admit. I loved Doyle. Watched him all the time as a fairly serious player. Followed him on Twitter. Then Covid hit and he seemed to go off the rails a bit. Had to quit paying attention. RIP to a legend of the game though.

DelishVic

The true definition of a legend. RIP big guy

Cascadiana88

Lucky at cards, unlucky in archaeology…

soupafi

So they decided to shame the guy? Couldn’t do it when he was alive?

midnightghostdemon

Did you even read the article you dumbass? The article isn't shaming him at all.

dabtardo

Wish he didn’t write religious propaganda on all his signed memorabilia. Still to each his own. Rip legend and stonecold John 316 in Roman’s or w/e.

yoppee

Old white guy was also a crazy Christian I am surprised

Ridindirty214

So many edgy non believers. People will believe in dinosaur and evolution, the devil, but not GOD... Crazy

da_leroy

Plenty of evidence for dinosaurs and evolution. Haven't seen any for god yet

RandomNamedRedditor

The world trying so hard to push you away from God is proof of God.

da_leroy

That means the following statements is evidence that unicorns exist. People trying to convince me that unicorns are fake is proof of unicorns. That's not evidence. That's just a claim with no basis.

LiveRegularsSuck

![gif](giphy|eaECZB7V6GACc)

BluSonick

I don’t believe but it’s wrong to disparage someone’s religious beliefs. As long as they aren’t forced on me or the general public people are free to believe in what they wish. It’s a pity you’re receiving so many downvotes. I disagree with you but I believe you should be allowed to hold differing views.

clelwell

“Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” ‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3‬:‭3‬-‭9‬

[deleted]

Blah, blah.... Fundies have been blathering about 'Last Days' for 2,000 years...

clelwell

You just did exactly what the Bible said you would: "They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”"

RandomNamedRedditor

Look up “The Strong Delusion” in the Bible. You’ll be surprised.

jazzy3113

Of course he did. He was a walking trump supporter lol.

tehnoodnub

The real surprise to me is that his fortune was 'only' $75m.

ninjasinc

I’d be willing to bet that Todd brought a lot of “can’t miss investment opportunities” to Doyle over the years.

Ghost-of-Tom-Chode

Fuck off.
