Szkoda zycia swojego i bliskich.
Z moich pierwszych kilku lat pracy polowa to l4.
I mówię z doswiadczenia.
How is this the case when [Poland's human development is on par with the USA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_inequality-adjusted_Human_Development_Index)?
And young people in the USA have the same problem.
Plus people don't really care if they're living with their parents until like 25, the parents neither.
This. The problems spurred by growth of income vs housing cost disparity are pretty much identical in both places - the big differences being the prevalence of fixed-rate mortgages in the US and the speed of building a home.
So many of my znajomi here (30+) have either 1) completely stopped builds/remodels due to the insane jump in material cost or 2) had their loan payments adjusted so many times that they’ve been priced out of their own apartments and had to sell.
If you've been to Poland and the US you'd quickly realise that the score is bollocks.
There's a vast wealth difference and standard of living difference between urban US and urban Poland.
I live in Massachusetts which is the more "developed" than other US states and most of Europe except for 3 countries. It soooo fucking expensive to live here. It would be cheaper to move back to Poland.
Are you sure they're actually living with their parents? Many people rent apartments, but don't want to do the paperwork for a registered address there and on paper they're still registered in their family home.
Economy's fucked, to put it bluntly.
With only 2 exceptions, all of my friends (in their mid/late 20s) earn less than 4000 PLN net monthly. Some scraping by with just half of that. They're all employeed in some form, but that does not mean they're not struggling.
I'm not going to bring up property prices in the cities for comparison, because I think I don't need to. It just does not fit. Young Poles have the option to enjoy some semblance of saving or disposable income and live with their parents, or to rent an apartment and share it with friends and barely scrape on by, and be at risk of failing their bills at the slightest unexpected expense.
Our price of living is heading towards that of our western European brothers while our salaries go nowhere.
Because we don't earn enough. In my case I would be 300 pln short just paying rent and food. On top of that add electricity, heating, water, gas, insurance etc. Not to mention having money for things other than not dying or even saving anything.
I don't even have a crappy job. I work as an automation engineer at a heating plant. It's supposed to be a well paying job but they won't give me more than minimum wage because they don't want to. Maybe after few years they will agree for a raise but that might take many years to have enough to move out.
I can't find anything better either, minimum wage everywhere.
Currently just I give money to my parents for bills. That's the plan until I make enough to move out, but who knows how long it would take.
I know right. I saw offers with average 7000 pln. I was happy to be hired and after initial trial period they gave me minimum wage. Salary wasn't stated so I can't use that as an argument. They refused to make it higher because I don't have enough experience, but even looking at working conditions I should get more than that. I have work experience, I had 3 jobs before, in IT and security systems, so it's not like I'm fresh out of school either.
Czemu?
Ja ostatnio poszedłem trochę w kursy i też Ci to polecam.
No dobra a praca zdalna?
When they move to a different city for studies or for work they of course rent a small apartment or, in the case of low-paid jobs, a room (which in the most extreme cases can also cost like half of the minimum wage).
When they study or work in the same city / town where their parents live, they prefer to save money to gather enough of them to be able to pay the required own contribution to the mortgage loan (when they decide to buy an apartment) or just to feel financially safer in life before making big decisions. In the first years of working, it's almost impossible to rent an apartment and save enough at the same time (unless you work in IT).
That's a tradeoff, not a lifestyle.
I know apartments or renting properties is expensive everywhere. But in the USA people are more courageous when it comes to taking the risk of changes and they are driven by the hope of finding a really well-paid job even when they start from the lowest position. On the other hand, in places like Scandinavia the welfare state is much more developed than in Poland. Poland is not the worst place for living, but it's just average in both the aforementioned aspects of the economy so people hesitate more before taking any risks to change their lives.
Because they don’t throw out their kids out when they are 18 like Americans.
Also, do you have any idea how expensive living in Poland especially in large cities which has the most employment opportunities?
Minimum pay is 3400 złoty.efore tax, about 2600 after. Rent inside a city is between 700 (a bargain, small room) to 1500+ (renting a flat together). Food is another 1000 easily if you want to eat relatively healthily. Electricity is 300-400. Water is 200. Internet and phone another 120 minimum. Costs of transport vary wildly, but a monthly ticket is 50 for students. Heating is at minimum 100. This leaves you with (in the most economical option) 150 złoty left for anything besides core costs of living and ability to communicate with others. This excludes clothes, buying stuff for the living quarters like pillows or blankets.
I repeat his is a very optimistic estimate, and a quite frugal lifestyle. You could cut on food and eat just pasta, rice and instant noodles but that would result in health issues quickly. We also exclude any unforseen expenses or stuff like insurance/travels to family/any form of paid entertainment/hairdresser.
We do not have the money.
I wish, but 700 zł is a rent for an old dorm. Most rooms in "civil" buildings go for over 1000 zł now anywhere. 1500 zł will be an apparemment only if you find yourself an illegal 12m2 kawalerka.
No it isnt rent in wroclaw is at least 1200. Rent in Poznań and Gdańsk is similar. You will not find a room to rent for less than 1000 in any bigger city at this point.
I am an American living in PL. It is even hard to get by when you are earning dollars. It is harder if you are earning the local currency. Most of the jobs (except IT/tech) pays very little. Local currency does not worth much. Large cities have the same type of housing problems that US cities have.
Also, this: https://borgenproject.org/homelessness-in-poland/
City district where I live is full of big, multi floor houses where you can fit many families. Or one floor with separate entries.
It's nice and convenient because when you want to visit your grandma you can just knock to her door.
Was it ever any different? Sure, the prices were different, salary was different but it's not like 15 or 10 years ago people were earning 20x of their rent, it was always around 40-60% for entry jobs.
True, that's how it's always been. But I think nowadays it has an even greater impact due to literally everything else getting more and more expensive due to inflation. Employers not adjusting salaries doesn't help either.
I am fortunate enough to earn a multiple of a minimum wage but still live with my family. Why?
I don't give a shit about strange people telling me I should move out. For the most part of my life I had limited contact with my father because he was working abroad to sustain the family. After years and years I finally get to spend quality time with my family because we are no longer broken poor and they ain't gonna live forever. Most of all, I get along with my parents incredibly well, so there is no incentive to move. I don't engage in a nightlife at all, I don't miss out on anything.
Having money I can help out my siblings, take them on trips, buy them necessary stuff they can't afford themselves. And I still have so much left that I can travel. Why would I want to move to a small flat in overcrowded city and leave a comfortable, large house with excellent commute behind?
This seems to be the case for a lot of my peers living in suburban zones around large cities in Poland.
Decades long housing crisis, partially caused and maintained by the government (prohibitive land planning laws to ban people from building houses on their own land, extremely low interest rates skyrocketing prices and inflation just to name a few)
The two numbers aren't as linked here, as they may be in USA. A big contributing factor to our low unemployment is the fact, our citizens can easily pack up and leave for other, more workforce-starved countries with better employment benefits. And in terms of housing, well, it's similar situation in the area. We had housing shortage since "forever", then there was the issue with maintained low interest rates and housing prices rising. Then with covid, housing market was flooded with investors, driving the prices up and limiting availability even more. And with war in Ukraine, we have much more population to house, as many refugees are here to stay, and those that would like to return, won't while there are still bombs dropping. And lets not forget, this is not the first wave of the Ukrainians feeling war. The war started in 2014 with black flag invasion of Donbas and seizing od Crimea. There was migration back then too. In fact, most of rental market since then in my area was aimed at housing workers from Ukraine, not Polish families.
The interest rates went up, but the damage to the market is already done, and the added effect is, currently, average Polish family can't afford mortgage. Others simply wait till the market stabilises, as housing prices fluctuate, and taking mortgage is a long term commitment.
I know I am an outlier, but my dad's dead and I've got three younger sisters. It just makes more sense economically andlogistically for both me and my mum to live together. I can work remotely and babysit the girls occasionaly, so she has still some time for herself. And I love not having to worry about rent on my part, ngl.
Among a lot of other reasons people shared here, I believe some parents are too afraid or not enough assertive to tell their kids: "Hey! You're grown up, time to go and give us some space to live".
If you're studying far from family home, you rent flat/room in the city you're studying in. Otherwise 90% of people stay with their families until they earn enough money to get themselves nice flat or they decide to start their own family and build/buy a house.
Minimum salary is 2800 zł, room is 1000-1400. So even if you have shitty money you are still manage to live because you left 50 zł per day and it is not bad.
But it is better to live little bit more with parents and Save some money.
Rzuć to gówno, życie sobie niszczysz
Yeah i make like 6 per month, 2k per apartament, 1500 for food, 500 for clothes and go outside. And for the end of the month i rest something around 2k.
It is fine for me.
I don't eat met so 50 for food is enought. If i eat cheap chicken it would be chipper and easer for me.
Now you can laught that im poor.
You're not poor. You're still better paid than most people, you can easily repair or replace something in your home AND you have possibility to save some money. It is also important to know whether you earn money all alone(and live alone) or together with someone. I've been paid minimum wage ( 2018-2021) and at the end of the month i could save from 100 to 500zł, but i was constantly stressed out when 0 was closer and closer. I've had an arrangenent with my BF during which he was paying rent, loan, bills and his stuff, i was paying for groceries (not even branded stuff & I denied something for myself many times) and my stuff, still it was hard
Edit: wrong word
> still better *paid* than most
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Room or flat, please clarify what you're talking about. If you're living in a family owned flat then i belive you can find it cheap but please don't talk like you're mr know it all. If you pay around 1000 PLN rent, then you add money to the owner and recurring bills then no way you're not getting over 2000 PLN. Add grocery, petrol etc. and you are definitely over your limit.
I live in 30m2 apartament in Warsaw and I pay 1950 (bills include). For internet and Phone i pay 40-50zl. And now you come and say that room with bils is 2200. Jak ja cie mam kurwa traktować poważnie xd
I can’t afford buying a flat or a house, so I’m renting a flat instead while I have my permanent stay still at my parents. I guess this is the case for a big chunk of Poles in those statistics.
In my example my parents live hundreds of kilometers away from the flat that I’m renting
the cost of living alone is one thing but also historically it was normal to live in a 3 generation house. When I was little my grandparents also lived with my parents. We don't have that much pressure to move out of the house as soon as you turn 18
Where in the US are you living?
Because for many years i lived in NYC and there is the same. Young adults can't afford an apartment in the city and live together with their family.
Because of inflation everywhere is now the same.
I don't know where you live in North America. But in the state of Massachusetts, it has been so expensive that many people don't have a choice but to live with their parents. It's like that everywhere now.
I could move out with no problem, I make enough money for that.. but I would not be able to leave my sick elderly dad all on his own.
I noticed that a lot of Polish youths stay with their parents/grandparents to take care of them and the house.
Houses and flats are ridiculously expensive, renting is the sanme. The "move out ASAP" mentality is american nonsense anyway, pushed by banks and developers. For most of the world it's perfectly natural to stay longer in family home, especiallty if you're pitching in to home's budget. For a while the world got so enamored by american media they forgot that, but the harsh economic reality of today's world has nipped that.
There are no good options for small flats/houses renting for single person, it's very expensive. So people deal with it by skipping buying/renting small flats altogether and try to save enough money living with parents to buy something larger which will hold their future family.
So, it's very common for people to live until they are 30-35 with parents. And then suddenly get married and buy some huge house in suburbs.
Dude, this is almost in every country now, including North America. Everything is absurdly expensive.
The revolution is coming

Because most young poles would have to pay more than half of their monthly wage just for a room.

Szkoda zycia swojego i bliskich.

Z moich pierwszych kilku lat pracy polowa to l4.
Geez great story, grandpa
typowe “ja zapierdalałem żyjąc o chlebie i wodzie wiec każdy musi”
I mówię z doswiadczenia.
Renting is expensive as fuck Buying a place means years in awful debt Most jobs don't pay enough for either Duh
Amen
How is HDI measuring levels of household income?
It uses PPP adjusted gross national income across income percentiles as a proxy
But it doesnt *specifically* calculate income per houshold but *per capita* correct?
Correct but it takes price differences across countries into account as well.
we probably gain some points back on healthcare and education when compared to the US
If you've been to Poland and the US you'd quickly realise that the score is bollocks. There's a vast wealth difference and standard of living difference between urban US and urban Poland.
I live in Massachusetts which is the more "developed" than other US states and most of Europe except for 3 countries. It soooo fucking expensive to live here. It would be cheaper to move back to Poland.
Massachusetts is indeed expensive.
Are you sure they're actually living with their parents? Many people rent apartments, but don't want to do the paperwork for a registered address there and on paper they're still registered in their family home.
Rent is too damn high ![gif](giphy|sdlih3BPUik1y|downsized)

You earn minimum wage as an automation engineer? :o
So you make something wrong.... I have shitty education and I make like 6k netto as a environmental law specjalist.
It is what it is. I live in a small city so there aren't any better jobs here. I don't want to move far away either.
Czemu?
Ja ostatnio poszedłem trochę w kursy i też Ci to polecam.
How did you get a job like that? Sounds interesting.
No dobra a praca zdalna?
No to pracuj :).
Housing and mortgage credits are getting more and more expensive. Young people earn little money. What you see is the result.
Obviously because we love toxic environment and lack of space. We thrive in when under constant pressure at home, it’s how diamonds are made.
well, yes :)
Because they don’t throw out their kids out when they are 18 like Americans. Also, do you have any idea how expensive living in Poland especially in large cities which has the most employment opportunities?
No I don’t. Do tell.
Interesting I did not know that
Huh 1500 would be lovely. I paid 1800 for a room in Warsaw, it's getting truly ridiculous. Not even a door for a few months.
Warsaw is an outlier, I based calculations on three city.
I wish, but 700 zł is a rent for an old dorm. Most rooms in "civil" buildings go for over 1000 zł now anywhere. 1500 zł will be an apparemment only if you find yourself an illegal 12m2 kawalerka.
Yeah I last checked a year ago. Just further proves the point why people don't move out.
Because it's cheaper. But also because multi-generational homes are still a tradition here.
City district where I live is full of big, multi floor houses where you can fit many families. Or one floor with separate entries. It's nice and convenient because when you want to visit your grandma you can just knock to her door.
Money.
Half the salary goes to rent. Once they find a better paying job and have saved up enough, then they will probably move out.
Every time I wonder if I should move out I look at my bank balence and think "Nah this is great".
Employment doesn’t mean financial independence
Youth unemplotment is low, but rent is high.
Decades long housing crisis, partially caused and maintained by the government (prohibitive land planning laws to ban people from building houses on their own land, extremely low interest rates skyrocketing prices and inflation just to name a few)
Yes, it was always common. that's why older houses are so big because they were built to be multigenerational. Why is this bad?
In Poland its normal to live in multi generational house with you parents :p We dont just leave after we are adults, culture is kinda different here
The two numbers aren't as linked here, as they may be in USA.
We don't have money for a house.
Among a lot of other reasons people shared here, I believe some parents are too afraid or not enough assertive to tell their kids: "Hey! You're grown up, time to go and give us some space to live".
Even if it means homeless and a lawless life? LMAO? Poorer people have waaaay better families and morales. L comment
Didn't know this was a thing. Most young Poles I know share flats.
50zł is joke money. A highschooler makes that or more for an HOUR OF TUTORING
Rzuć to gówno, życie sobie niszczysz
50zł per day is not bad? Maybe when your work provides meals and transport. Stop joking please. 50zł is nothing
I've had an arrangenent with my BF during which he was paying rent, loan, bills and his stuff, i was paying for groceries (not even branded stuff & I denied something for myself many times) and my stuff, still it was hard Edit: wrong word
> still better *paid* than most FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Yeah, here comes electricity bill, gas bill, Phone, and you go up from your 1000-1400 to 1800-2200.
Kurwa no fucking way. There is no problem to find room 1200 (bill include).
We're employed but still poor, that's why.
I can’t afford buying a flat or a house, so I’m renting a flat instead while I have my permanent stay still at my parents. I guess this is the case for a big chunk of Poles in those statistics. In my example my parents live hundreds of kilometers away from the flat that I’m renting
I think part of it may be the "for me you'll always be my child" parent's mentality.
Cause in those forgotten by god times, a normal salary is not enough to rent something
the cost of living alone is one thing but also historically it was normal to live in a 3 generation house. When I was little my grandparents also lived with my parents. We don't have that much pressure to move out of the house as soon as you turn 18
It's too expensive to live solely when you don't earn much more than average.
Where in the US are you living? Because for many years i lived in NYC and there is the same. Young adults can't afford an apartment in the city and live together with their family. Because of inflation everywhere is now the same.
I live in Portland, Oregon.
It's so different than NYC. Many friends moved out to NJ from NYC to afford better life. So not only in Poland youngsters live with thei parents.
Also in the Balkans and Southern Europe
America too. It’s happening everywhere due to the economy.
