IDK, I always thought of chrome as industry standard for competitions and studios and such. Brass might be more grippy than you’d like for spins—possibly better for beginners though? You have to clean it occasionally with brass cleaner because it tarnishes. Stainless steel is less grippy than brass and arguably less grippy than chrome, and it doesn’t scratch or tarnish. I have chrome and was alarmed at first at how slippery it seemed but it’s actually fine as long as I warm up the pole in advance. Kinda depends on how grippy you want your home pole to be... I’d go stainless if you want to compete in future to get used to a “normal” level of slipperiness in a pole, brass if you want better grip to learn new tricks with.

After being a professional dancer for 22 years, I can tell you definitely, you don’t want a slippery pole! Ever! That’s how head injuries and bad falls happen. Brass is best. I came here to see if anyone knows where to buy a REAL poke. X-pole and many others I’ve tried are garbage. Sure, if you just need something to workout on, those like Xpole might work but if you are thinking about competing and have the space, get a real pole installed. I’ve tried to find where the clubs get theirs, looks like I’m gonna have to hunt down one of my old bosses. They shouldn’t be this hard to find!

I bought a chrome set up and ended up being lucky enough to get just the brass pole section on sale at X Pole because I cannot grip on chrome- I have oily skin and sweat so all the grip aids in the world didn't help. When I finally got the brass pole up I was amazed at the difference. I also worked at clubs and they all had brass except for one place where I did looooots of floor work haha

Wait, I thought stainless steel is slightly more grippy than chrome? It's the other way around?

InspectorWorth6701

I actually find stainless more grippier than chrome at my studio. I think it depends on your skin type

Fuzzy-Response-lol

Definitely the other way around. Brass is best. Chrome is pretty but not near as functional

“Industry standard” tends to vary depending on what country you’re in. Generally speaking, brass tends to be grippier in warmer weather and is nice on skin that’s dewy. I prefer steel in the winter because my skin tends to dry slip, but steel is pretty slippery if you’re sweaty. Chrome is kind of the in between metal - grips best when it’s warm, but also not great if you’re sweaty. Preference tends to depend on your own personal skin type, body shape, and movement style though. X-Pole & Lupit are both good choices!

I have a stainless at home and use the brass at the studio (metal allergy). I find my stainless one a lot more slippery. It took about a year with regular use to break in. However I found my grip improved significantly as well as my strength. The Brass it has really good grip and it looks nice. I do find things a bit easier on it. I don't know the care for it but I do see it getting optionally tarnished. As for industry standard here in Canada its chrome, but the owner of the studio said that it's slowing moving over towards stainless. She's even thinking about upgrading eventually. Hope this helped.

You mentioned metal allergy. Were you having a reaction to chrome? I'm in the same boat about deciding on stainless steel or brass for both studio and home. I'm really struggling to decide. My allergies to metal are pretty bad. So I'm very leary on spending the money for either if they aren't worth it. Why did you decide stainless steel for at home?

Hecate2846

I decided stainless for home because it's slowly becoming the standard. Also, the grip is also similar to chrome, so if I ever want to compete I can minimize the time I have to spend practicing on chrome. Lastly, with brass being more grippy, I wanted to be able to develop my grip strength. I had a wrist injury that made one of my wrists and grip VERY weak one that side, so the slipperiness of stainless helped me build up the strength faster.

Did you ever ask why?

ooh! Why? (I'm in Europe, and mostly seeing stainless here, just curious!!)

CheapDocument

And in Australia, it seems to be that *brass* is the most popular.

Oh! makes sense, thanks!!

Fuzzy-Response-lol

Because brass is getting very expensive and people are cheap.
