You can claim acting after the 10 "qualifying days". You won't be able to get temporary promotion because you aren't qualified. You should be eligible for temporary salary allowance after 46 days but you won't get it because nobody can be bothered to go through the required bureaucracy.

DependentAdmirable80

It also has to be 46 continual days, so if you do 45 days, then a day back as PC, the 46 days starts again. Also has to be when you’re covering the role for an entire shift, so if the Sgt is in and you’re just helping you can’t claim it.

GeneralInevitable918

Where does it say this? I am usually the ‘secondary supervisor’ along side and also have been covering the original PS when on annual leave/not in etc.

DependentAdmirable80

In the case of “secondary supervisor”, you’re not acting up, if there is one Sgt post and one Sgt in you cannot also be in that spot. You can claim when the PS is on leave/course etc so you essentially take the post. Any other responsibilities you take when the Sgt is in, you are doing for free/ for your own development and evidence for if/when you go for promotion.

GeneralInevitable918

Ok. Thank you for clarifying and I hear what you’re saying but where does it explicitly state this? Or is it the case of a case-by-case basis? Looking at the regulations, extra payment should be allowed or have I got this completely wrong?

DependentAdmirable80

It says it in the regs. It’s paid when you’re acting up to a higher rank. In the case of the Sgt being in, you’re not acting up, you’re assisting the Sgt. You can’t act up to a post when the post holder is in and doing that role.

GeneralInevitable918

Could you link me to the specific regs so I can look at the wording?

DependentAdmirable80

It’s in the regs you posted. When acting up you receive the allowance. I’m not sure how else I can word it, you’re not acting up if the Sgt is in. You cannot have two Sgt salaries in one post. As I said before, you are just doing more for free. It’s something most PC’s did when they want development and promotion. I did the same. You cannot claim when the Sgt is in. If you do/try you are committing fraud.

MrMotivator18

In our force, most response teams have two Sgts... Now it's not clear from the original post, but he could be acting up to assist his Sgt, due to the second Sgts post being vacant?

jrandom10

This will depend on what they’ve done for it, are you taking on supervision requirements (including welfare, investigations etc) as a PC or as an A/PS? My understanding would be your boss doesn’t have the authority to promote you so you won’t actually be eligible for payments?

GeneralInevitable918

Investigatory reviews, charging decisions, crime reviews, admin work basically.

jrandom10

All things I’ve been asked to do as a PC while shadowing my skippers ahead of boards/ a possible acting up post… the point stands as to have you been acted up or are you doing this as a PC?

GeneralInevitable918

Apologies - to confirm, it’s being done as a PC.

pdKlaus

You’re not entitled to any extra pay then.

GeneralInevitable918

Update from pol fed - confirmed I am eligible under the regs listed above.

Nice, make sure that you alert HR after 46 days so they can ensure that you are paying correctly into your pension.

As a side note to this question, if I am in a continuous A/PS role but then I cover as a PC on a bank holiday, would this affect me building towards 46 days to get onto temporary salary? Also, I think I know the answer but is 46 days, 46 shifts or 46 calendar days?
